If you are running OpenClaw on a VPS right now, this is the single most important thing you can do to keep it safe. So, right now, your server has an open door to the internet and there are bots trying door handles millions of times per day. And that's not an exaggeration.
Today, I'm going to show you how to make your server completely invisible by installing only one thing. After that, nobody can even find your server, let alone break into it. So, let's get into it.
So, just a quick note on why this is more important now than ever is because this fully autonomous hacker program just came out. It's on. It's open source so anyone can use it. It's called Shannon and this is definitely going to be one of the tools that are going to be attacking your VPS like millions of times per day at this form. So it's extremely important we get tail scale installed so that we can guard from programs like this.
So what is tail scale actually doing for you? So for all you non- tech people out there, this is basically what we're So right now your server is basically a front door on a public street. Anybody can go up and try the door handle and see if they can get in. And bots are doing this millions of times per day. They're trying to hit your server and break in with brute force. But what tail scale does is it takes that front door on your public street and it moves it inside the private building that you only have the key to. So all these bots can't even see your server, let alone break into it.
And for you more technical people, it's a VPN network which creates an encrypted private tunnel between the two devices. So your laptop and your server can talk to each other, but nobody else can even see either of your devices. And it's a free app. So let's get into it.
So first you got to go to tailscale.com. You're going to get start making an account. If you're on Mac, it's going to get you to download the app. So you're going to download the app from the Mac App Store. So once you've been through the onboarding, you've made your account, you downloaded on the app store, it should open for you, but if not, you'll probably have an icon up here like this. You can just turn it on and then we can verify. And once you've logged in on the app, it's going to show that you're connected. And now it says waiting for your second device. So this is where we're going to connect the VPS.
So this is where we have to SSH into our VPS. If you've never SSH into your server before via your own command line, an easier way could be to just go to your VPS provider's website and go to your console and there will be a button that you can click that will already be sshed into your server and you'll already be on the command line of your VP. I know sshing in can be daunting for people, but if you use something like claude code or claude to help you get in could be very helpful.
So once you've sshed into your just going to put this command here, I'll put it in the description. And what this is going to do is install tail scale on your VPN. You will see installation complete if it was successful. And it says login to start using tail scale by running tail scale up. So let's just copy paste that here. And now it's telling us to visit this to login. So just copy paste that into your browser and sign up with the email you logged in with. So just copy that into your browser and follow the prompts. It will automatically get you connected.
So once you've put that URL in your browser and hit connect. You will see up here on your tail scale icon that you are connected to. And that's it. You can see you keep this on while you're talking to your bot. And now we're in this happy scenario right here where nobody knows that our two computers exist.
There's a lot more you can do to boost the security on your open claw even more, but this is step one and it's by far the most important one. But in a later video, I'm going to go through all the other things you can also do to help boost that security.
