Get Your YAD Back — Jeremy Johnson | FEARLESS

We're on part three of this thing, but I'm just calling this. I've just dropped the other titles and just calling this "Get Your Yad Back." Somebody say it with me. Get your >> Get your yad back.

Someone's like, "I don't know what kind of church I just came into, but this is weird." Yad. If you're new here, you got to go watch the YouTube. I'll try to catch you up. Amen.

Let's go read Exodus chapter uh 17, verse number eight. I'm going to read this again. Sometime you're like, "Pastor, we read this every week. We should keep reading it. We should keep pulling every..." Sometimes things taste better after you left it in the fridge for a few days and all the goodness runs through it. And uh, Amen.

Exodus 17, chapter 8. How many you guys been getting something from this chapter, these verses? Get your yad back. It says this, "The Amalachites came and attacked the Israelites at Rafidim." Anybody remember what Rafidim means? Rest. Place of rest. Cabo San Lucas. My ties. Virgin my ties. Those new pair of shorts. The sun out. The birds are singing perfectly. It means rest. It means the fulfillment of everything that was unrestful. It means completion. It means that place I'm trying to get. Anybody have a Rafidim in this room? Somewhere you're trying to get to somewhere you say, "Man, that's it. When I get there, I can." When I finally get married, I can. And all the married people will say, "Amen. I don't know about that." When I finally have kids, I can rest. I finally get the business going. I can. Oh, no. Amen. Rafidim isn't always what it's cracked up to be. Thank God doesn't crack.

The Amalachites came and attacked the Israelites at Rafidim. Isn't it like the devil to always attack you when you finally get to rest? He doesn't attack your work. He attacks your rest. You're good all week long and then Sunday it all goes crazy. People remain. The freeways are packed. The tire goes out. The texts blow up. He loves to attack your rest. When did we lose our building? Right when I came back from rest. 24 hours' notice. You had it and I had it. He attacked our rest. Good thing we got a group of fighters in the house that understands that peace comes through warfare. >> That the shoes of peace had spikes on them. Come on. Come on. We're not. We're not making peace. Come on. We're. We're not peacemakers. We're peace. We're peacekeepers. Amen. Did I say that wrong? Yeah. Yeah. We're not peacekeepers. We're peace makers. We're not just keeping the peace. We're making peace. Amen. Good. My wife was helping me, but not helping me. Amen.

Exodus 17:8, it says, "The Amalachites came and attacked the Israelites at Rafidim. Moses said to Joshua, 'Choose some of our men to go out and fight the Amalachites. Tomorrow I will stand on top of the hill with the staff of God in my hands.' So Joshua fought the Amalachites as Moses had ordered. And Moses and Aaron and Hur went to the top of the hill." As long as Moses held up his hands. And the word right here for hands is yad. Somebody say, "Get your yad back." It's the word right here. Moses, as long as Moses held up his yad, as long as he had up his hands, the Israelites were winning. But whenever, somebody say whenever he lowered his yad, get your yad back. Whenever he lowered his hands, the Amalachites were winning. It had nothing to do with Joshua and everything to do with the position of the leader's hands. Who's resting on the position of your hands? Who's losing in the valley while you're straining on the mountain? Who are you fighting for to have breath in their lungs? Maybe it's your family. Maybe it's your co-workers. Maybe it's your kids. As kids, as kids. But I encourage you today, no matter how heavy the staff gets, lift your hands back up. Somebody say, "Get your yad back."

Whenever he lifted his hands, the Israelites were winning. But whenever he lowered his hands, the Amalachites were winning. When Moses's hands grew tired, somebody say, "I'm getting tired." Everybody gets tired. They took a stone and put it under him. That stone is Jesus. Amen. And he sat on it. Aaron and Hur held his hands up, one on each side, one on the other. And as his hands remained steady till the sunset, so Joshua overcame the Amalachite army with the sword.

Then the Lord said to Moses, "Write this on a scroll, as something to be remembered. I need you to remember this moment. I need you to remember, Moses, that it wasn't Joshua who won. It wasn't the strength of your hands, 'cause your hands got tired. And it wasn't even Aaron and Hur. It was the rock that you were sitting on that was the banner over your life." See, God will let you know that no one gets credit over your season of breakthrough but Him. >> I need you to write this down because people are going to forget. They're going to forget. And I need Joshua to hear it over and over and over again. And I need him to know why he won in the valley was because you held up your hands. But not because you held up your hands, but because I was the banner over your life. Because I will completely blot out the name of the Amalachites from under heaven.

Moses, in verse 15, Moses built an altar. Come on. This whole season is back to the altar. Meet me at the altar and called it, "The Lord is my banner." Or we could say Jehovah Nissi. He said, "Because hands were lifted up against the throne of the Lord, the Lord will be at war against the Amalachites from generation to generation." Get your yad back here. Here's the word yad. Whenever you think of yad, you can think "yield all daily." Yield all daily. Surrendered hands, surrendered hearts, and consistent hands. Surrendered hands, surrendered hearts, consistently yield all daily. Moses, whenever he yielded all daily, they won. When he lowered what he had, even if it was minutely, they lost. Who's losing right now because you put your hands down? Who's dying in the field that God called you to because you thought you were on a solo mission? You didn't realize you were a leader in this generation. I didn't come to talk to followers. I came to talk to leaders who are getting their yad back.

You see, maybe now you can understand why the devil fought so hard to get you to put down what God has done in your life. Because his staff would have been his notebook while he sat out amongst the stars. He only had a staff because he failed to lead where he was supposed to lead. And go. So God allowed him to go into the wilderness and become a shepherd. But even what he thought was failure was actually training. It was God preparing him. If you can't lead sheep, you can't lead people. 'Cause these people you're about to lead will run off the cliff if they don't have a leader. So I need to teach you and train you. He would have had on all his staff, all his pain, all his hurt. It would have been his testimony. The Bible says they overcame by the blood of the lamb and the word of our testimony. Who is waiting on you holding up your testimony? Don't be ashamed of where God brought you from. If he brought you out of addiction and he healed you, hold that thing up and say, "I'm 10 days sober right now in the blood of Jesus." [Applause] If he brought you out of anger or shame or fear, you write a book about that thing and let a generation know. I'm holding up my >> so Joshua can win in the valley. Get your yad back.

Can we talk for a second though about the weight of leadership? Can we just be real for a second? It's not easy to yield all daily because your yield has a lot writing on it. I wish I would have known this when I was 10 years old. The reason there was such an attack against my life is because I would one day be standing here in a Joseph-like sweater with a rap beat and no dance moves bringing the gospel. I had no clue when I was failing my speeches in the fourth grade and so nervous I would skip classes those days. I had no clue the fear coming against me was proof of the call inside me. See, many of you have been attacked throughout your whole life. The enemy attacked you because he saw more in you than you saw in yourself. It wasn't by accident. It wasn't your hair. It wasn't where you grew up. It wasn't the tone of your voice. It. It wasn't that you were weird or different. God had set you apart for His hand and His work because one day you would hold up your praise. See, there's a reason why all of hell has fought against your praise.

The weight of being a leader. See, Moses didn't just end up on the hill. He was trained for the hill in pain to fight for the very people that turned on him. As long as Moses's hands were lifted, Israel prevailed. But when his hands grew weary, Amalachite prevailed. The devil is after the posture of a generation. The attack on your life is about not your possessions, but your posture. When leaders stop worshiping, I'm not talking about a praise song. I'm not talking about a Sunday morning. I'm not talking about, "Oh, I listen to Oceans today." I'm. I'm talking about when leaders stop worshiping. Worship is different than praise. Praise is when you see God do it all and you thank Him for doing it. Worship is before you see God do it. And you say, "God, I know You haven't done it yet, but You are good for all my worth." Worthship will break out anywhere at all times. The fight is over your posture. Not on Sunday, but on Monday and Tuesday. And when you get the report from the doctor, the fight is over your posture. And when leaders stop worshiping, followers that were sent to follow those leaders start dying.

The Amalachite attacked. It was the battle of the flesh. And Moses's flesh grew heavy. And Moses wasn't just tired because he was tired. He was tired because his arms were trying to carry the weight of an entire nation. You're not just tired because of what you can see. You are carrying things. Come on. Some moms in here are tired. You're not just tired because you have a hyperactive kid. You're tired because you're carrying a prophet that will shape nations. Some of you in here are building a new business and you're not just tired. And look at all these people that are not tired. It's because God knows that the finances that come through your business will actually shape the kingdom. You're tired because of the weight of the longevity of what you're carrying. Don't be ashamed of being tired. If you haven't wanted to quit, you don't have a call. 'Cause the call is so heavy. Think about it. For Jesus, it was just a cup he was freaked out about. "Lord, let this cup." The cup is too heavy. A cup is too heavy. Wasn't talking about a cup. He was about to drink the cup of the wrath of our sin. He said, "The cup, it's too heavy." For Elijah, it was a letter from a woman named Jezebel, but it was too heavy. A letter was too heavy. What's been too heavy for you? That you've been embarrassed by even declaring out loud that there were more in that thing. It wasn't about that thing that broke you. It was about the great. Look, I. I couldn't believe when the pastor of Fearless Church was dealing with anxiety and depression. When I was going to the hospital and the doctor would say, "Have you ever tried yoga?" I'm like, "No, I pray every day." I was embarrassed at the weight of the cup. Have you ever been embarrassed by the weight that your yads are trying to hold up? You're yielding all daily. And if it was heavy, I could call for help because it would make sense. But what I'm carrying is so light that I'm embarrassed to even say anything. But if you don't, people die in the process. You know, it's biblical for us to carry each other's burdens, but we say foolish things like, "I don't want to be a burden." Well, good. That ain't biblical, 'cause you're going to be one to somebody. You don't have to be one to everybody, but you do have to be a burden to somebody because it is actually our call together to carry each other's burdens.

See, you don't have to lift up your yad by yourself. That's actually why we're here. Isn't it funny that the people that want the most community leave church the earliest? It's over. Good. Got to get out. Got to get out to my car as fast as I can. I would hate to to be stuck in a long line in the parking lot, yet you're losing in life because no one's able to help lift up your hands. 'Cause proximity to community matters as much as desiring it. You actually have to put yourself out there to put yourself in. [Applause] So if you got a big burden, you should probably stay around a little bit and let us help carry your burden, and you could help us carry our burden, and together we can make it home with our shields of faith intact, and the people in our valleys can make it. Come on, somebody say, "Get your yad back." [Applause] Heaviness doesn't mean you're in the wrong place. It means you're carrying something with eternal weight. You weren't called because you could handle it. You were called so He could handle it through you. God gives you daily bread so that every day you can go to His kitchen and say, "God, what bread do You have for me today?" You need Him every, every, every day. Yield all daily. How do you do that? Because every time you meet Him, He meets with you. And He always gives out more than you're giving. Isn't it interesting that He brought Aaron on one side and Hur on the other, but there had to be a stone under Moses? I'm thankful for you carrying my burden, but I'm so glad that you're not carrying me alone. He placed me on a rock. Every leader. Moses said, "Lord, kill me if You're going to treat me like this." Elijah said, "Kill me under this tree." If you've dealt with depression, suicidal thoughts, and you're embarrassed about it, we ought to just shame the devil and let him know that he didn't win in those whispers that he gave. That me breathing today is a threat to you tomorrow. Come on. That me just breathing is worship. That me just standing here is worship. No, you couldn't take me out in that moment because there was more I was called to. >> And Moses had to protect his yads. He didn't fight with his yads up in the valley. He went to the mountain and he took a few people there. He took a few people all the way up. You got to be more picky about the people that you let on your mountains. You and I got to be okay with allowing certain people to stay in the valley. Everybody can't come with you. Some people won't lift your hands up. Some people will tear them down. Let me say it this way. Victory is found in keeping the right community, and so is victimhood. Both are found in the community you keep. Whichever seat you sit in will be found in your closest yad lifters. I want people that believe in the call of God more on my life than I believe in it myself. I need some people that won't let me quit. I need some people that won't let me shut down shop. I need some people that won't let me stay in my misery. Maybe they'll meet me there, but they'll lift me out of there. I need some community that says, "Pastor, we got your back. Keep your yads up." I need some people that ain't just going to call me on Sunday. I need some people that aren't just going to be there when I'm when I'm doing good. I need some people that will cry with me when I'm doing bad. I need some people in my life that are okay with my humanity, >> not just His divinity in me. >> Moses surrounded with these people.

One of my favorite people in the story is Joshua. Joshua actually is the same name for Jesus in the New Testament. And so, let me let you know know this: that in every story, I used to find myself as the hero. Anybody else do that? I. I'm David. Not on the roof. I'm not that David. I'm the David killing the giant. I'm the Daniel in the lion's den praying. I'm Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego when they're not bowing. But I found often times it's actually not me who's the hero, it's Jesus. In fact, not sometimes, all the time. And Jesus is a picture of Joshua. He's also a picture found in Moses and Aaron and Hur. You got the thief on the right, the thief on the left, if you know the rest of the story, and you got the prophet in the middle. One was in the line of a king. One was in the line of a priest, and one was in the line of a prophet. Moses, Joshua, Aaron, and Hur. One was a warrior in the field. One were the Old Testament on the hill. All of this is a picture of Jesus. Let me say it this way. All of this, anything good happening here is a picture of Jesus. Anything good you hear me say is a picture of Jesus. Anything good that happens in worship is not the singer. It's the Jesus that's in the singer. Everything in this word is a shadow of Jesus. But what we need to remember is that it's just a shadow of Jesus. Not Jesus. I have to say that because we've made our leaders Jesus. I know I have the hair of the guy in the picture that they painted that probably looks nothing like Jesus. I know recently a homeless man actually thought I was Jesus and I was driving a truck and I said, "Get in. Follow me. Send no more." We rode around and I dropped him off. Gave him some bread. I'm just kidding. Right. I. I know sometimes we could get mixed up because the anointing on someone's life, the Christ in them makes us somehow believe that they are Christ. We have to stop crowning our leaders. Else, at the same time, we'll crucify the same leaders we crowned because they're not Christ. They're just Christlike. They're not the sun. They're just the shadow. Peter's shadow healed people in the New Testament. They started trying to worship Peter, and Peter said, "Ah, no, no, no, no, no, no, no. It's not my shadow. It's who overshadows me."

Why do I tell you this? Because we are the most offended generation in the world that the world has ever seen. In fact, the Bible declares it that that that many will be offended. You know where offense comes from? It comes from when you let me down from what I believed. Offense is not only about what they did. It's about what you believe them to do, and they didn't. I believed you to be here and on Monday at 1 in the morning, you were here. And so to that degree, you've wound. Isn't it unique that no one at your job offends you? Isn't it unique that that no one else in your life offends you like someone from church? Because we have a certain standard. And it's funny how we've made that standard God Himself. We were meant to honor our leaders, not worship them. And when you worship me or Christie or any leader in this room, you will miss the true place of your worship. God will smash every idol you set up against Him. If you've made me an idol or Pastor Christie or Bod or anybody in your life, God will smash those idols so you can find out it was Him, not them, doing all of it. The pressure crushes more leaders than most sin because the pressure of the people that say, "Moses, we saw you lifting your hands up." Wow. And Moses is like, "No, let's not make the altar. Moses was awesome. Let's not make the altar." Yeah. Because we don't. We want to talk about leaders that have let us down, but what about if you've been a leader and a son or daughter has let you down? That's a whole another level. When someone said, "I'll be here forever. I. I'll always have your back." And pretty soon, the one that had your back was stabbing you in the back. The one who professed how awesome you were was now gossiping about you, making up lies. Ain't no one can relate, right? Ain't no one that can relate. Is. Isn't it funny that who was on the left and right of Moses? Aaron and Hur. The priest would eventually take his priesthood and use it to take the people into the wrong kind of worship. Hur, the king, who was so bold to stand, would eventually not be able to stand up to his own wife, who was the sister of Moses, tearing down the whole community. So much so that she got leprosy and got stuck outside the camp for her mouth. What's in your mouth will actually come out to your life. Isn't it funny that the people that held up his arms in one season were the very people that were tearing down his arms in the next? Thank God he didn't call the altar the place where Hur had my back. The place where Aaron really had my back. Because those that begin with you will not always be those that finish with you.

But Joshua, he was a stayer. Can we give a hand for Joshua? Because Joshua wasn't just in Rafidim with the sword. In fact, Joshua was not in the line of a priest or in the line of a king. Joshua was the son of none. He was in the line of normal. He was in the line of average. See, see what I found is that God didn't pick Aaron, and He didn't pick Hur, and He didn't pick Moses. 'Cause Aaron failed with the worship of the golden calf, and Hur failed with the silence of his family, and Moses failed with his anger problem. You know what? Moses was offended at the people that God sent him that were offended at him. And Moses died in the desert. And Joshua was such a stayer that Moses made it, and Moses didn't make it, and Joshua did. Can we give a hand for the stayers? I know we celebrate in our culture new starts, and and nothing against new starts. We've all had great new starts, uh, you know, uh, life update, and then here's everything new, and everyone's like, "Oh my gosh, this is so incredible. I've always believed this for you. I cannot wait. I cannot. I'm just so enamored with this." But, but no one ever says, "Life update. Still doing what God called me to do. Still living where God called me to live. Still believing for what God called me to believe." Is anybody going to give me a shout for that right now? We don't clap in our culture for stayers. It's okay if you got to go. God calls everybody somewhere. We're in the army. God moves us around. That's okay. There are some people that God's moved here. I know growing up, my parents, they had two churches our whole life. Two churches. I just saw that consistency in their life of being a stayer. Matter of fact, when we left our first church, it was because of a situation that happened in the church with the pastor. That was a big deal. And my parents actually prayed. I thought they were crazy. They actually prayed, "Do you want us to stay here?" Even though the pastor had to be removed from a sin that he did, and someone else replaced him, they felt the need to ask God, "We'll stay wherever You want us to stay." The next church we ended up, it was the last church I ever went to, and then I became a pastor. Now listen, we don't clap for stayers. So everyone wants to be a starter 'cause stayers don't get the claps from earth. But sometimes what earth claps for, heaven is silent on. And what heaven claps for, earth is silent. Give me an example, pastor. The cross. There were three at the cross commenting. Wow. Oh my gosh. Jesus, you're so awesome. Everyone abandoned Him at the cross. But it was His greatest act of defiance against the devil. Come on, somebody in this room. Can you give God a shout for those that have just remained in the call that you're called to be? I just want to clap for a second. This church is 12 years old. Can I have everyone who's been here for 12 years stand up? I want to clap for all the people that have been here for 12 years. Come on. Can we honor these people who said for 12 years? Come on. Josh O'Hara. Come on. We got a few people. Come on. Anybody that came at the, the, the first year, anybody who came at the first year, you can't. You are. You've been here for 11 years. Stand up. You've been here for 11 years. We got 12 years. Let's go with 11. Come on. We got. We got 10. Who's been here for 10 years? Come on. Who's been here for 10 years? Come on. What? What about 9 years? Come on. Somebody's been here for 9 years. Come on. What about 8? Come on. Right here. What about 8 years? Come on. Seven years. 6 years. Come on. Five years. Come on. Four years. You've been here for four years. Three years. Come on. We got people that have been here for three years. Come on. You just been. Come on. We got two. Somebody's been here for two years. Let's go, baby. Let's go. Come on, everybody stand up if you've been here for one year. Come on. This your first year here. Come on. Look at all these amazing people. We love you guys. Say, "Get your yad back."

Joshua was a stayer. And because he stayed long enough, God's like, "I got to use this guy. He doesn't have the eloquence of Aaron or the business skills of Hur. But this dude, he knows how to use the sword. And he knows how to fight under the leadership of his leader. And he fights when he puts his hand down and he's losing. And he fights when he puts his hand up." Notice that Joshua never stopped fighting. Even when Moses is tired and weak and fails, Joshua just keeps swinging. I'm going to keep going till God tells me to stop. I'm going to keep. Come on. Somebody in here needs to shout for being a stayer. Somebody in here needs to say, "You know what? Thank God that He put the sword in my hand and I just kept swinging. I just kept swinging. I. Some days I lost. Some days I won. Some days I felt like quitting." Some of you have ran from this church and God said, "Run back. You're still here, baby. You're still. The devil wasn't afraid of your leaving. He was afraid of your staying." >> And now God is about to anoint every stayer in this room. He's about to bless every stayer in this room. 'Cause you realize your pastor was not God. Christie is not Jesus. But Jesus brought this community together to touch LA, to change your family, to bless your house. What. What a blessing it is to be in a community that will lift up your hands. I. I'll never forget. And the piano's going to come and they're worried because I might say I need more time. I'll never forget the times when I needed errands and Hurs to lift up these tired hands. I'll never forget the times that I was in the hospital. People came to visit me. I'll never forget to get getting the stream of my own church that I preached, gave the words of life to, that were now speaking life over me. I'll never forget the time when I had to take a break from pastoring this church and traveling on the road. And at that time, me and Christy only made ends meet by traveling full-time around the world preaching the gospel. And our church took up an offering and said, "Pastor, we know you can't travel right now, so we're going to help feed your family." I never forget. I never forget Joshua. I saw him back there. He had this brand new leather jacket that he had just got, vintage, so cool. He looked so cool in it. He put it on the altar so my family could eat. I never forget those moments of the people in my life that were okay with me being human and say, "Pastor, we're going to help lift up your hands." But I'm careful to mark those people as Jesus Himself because although they resembled Him, none of us are Him. And I overall want to mark every season that God's got me through as Jehovah Nissi. The Lord is my banner. For when man failed, God did it. When man walked out, God never did. And Joshua isn't a man in the story. He's a picture of Jesus. What the law couldn't get into the promised land, Joshua was the one who brought the people in. And here we are on tour again. Some days my hands are tired, but I know God that the position of my worship will shape a city, will change a life. God, I know that if I don't name this place after what man did, but after what You always do, I'll remember that although hands were put against me, is why You'll be at war against the enemy for the rest of my life. You see, Moses was just a picture of Jesus on a cross between two thieves. And we're just those thieves. Well, I'm a priest. I'm a king. No, we're just thieves. And Jesus says to us, "You too can be with me in paradise." And one thief barked, and the other said, "Yes." This whole story is just a picture of two yads nailed to a tree. Why a tree? 'Cause a tree represented the curse. Anybody who was nailed to a tree was cursed. His yads, His power was yielded for me and you. He was nailed down so I could be lifted up. Let me ask you this. What have you been giving your hands to? He already paid so that you could give your hands to Him. Yield all daily. What do you need to yield today that you've been holding on to? Maybe you need some errands and Hurs around you to go, "Moses, put your hands back up. People are waiting on your praise. LA is waiting on your praise. The battle is won in the valley from what happens on the mountain. We're on the mountain top today, folks. Everybody didn't come with you to church. You got some errands and Hurs next to you today. Get your yads back. Get your hands back. Get your authority back. Take your power back. Say, 'God, I refuse to be offended. I refuse to sit down right here. I refuse to die in this place. God, You died in my place so I could live in this place.'" Come on. If you've been having trouble in your marriage, trouble in your business, trouble in your car, trouble in your body. The enemy is not after your marriage. He's not after your business. He's not after your car. He's not after your finances. He's not even after your mind. He's after your worship. He's after your praise. How long will you wait? How long will you keep your hands down? Win, Moses. Win, generation. Will you lift up your hands and say, "God, with my last breath, I'll praise You. With my last..." Fearless Online Church, man, what an amazing day so far. Right now is an opportunity for us to give back. We've been receiving so much. I. I don't know about you, but I've been blessed from what's going on in this stream and what God is doing in this church. Proverbs 19:17 says this, "Whoever is generous to the poor lends to the Lord, and He, the Lord, will repay him for his deeds." This church is all about reaching the needs of our city and cities worldwide. In fact, last year alone, we were able to pass out 2.2 million pounds of food. Come on, somebody. That's a lot of food. We. We gave out food and we were able to pray for every single person. We also washed their cars. Pretty much the modern-day uh version of washing someone's feet. Man, what an awesome experience that we've got to have through generous givers just like you. You may not be able to be here on ground zero level feeding people, clothing people, loving on people, but you sure can be a part of this by giving your finances and lending, in a sense, to the Lord. And we know that you can't outgive God. I've found over 41 years of life that no matter how much I give to the Lord, He always gives back. He gives back so much more. No matter how much I release, I really believe that the spirit of generosity is alive in our generation. We need to meet people's physical needs so they'll open their heart so God could meet their spiritual need. Would you help us do that? We want to give out more clothing. We want to give out more food. We want to touch thousands more people. In fact, this year, I'm believing to give out 4 million pounds of food. Would you step out in faith with us? Would you become a partner today? Everything in life to get anywhere really takes partnership. Every one of us are here because of partnership. Life happens because of partnership. I have a dream that we would reach people's physical need to give them a spiritual truth. Who Jesus is, who Jesus wants to be in their life, that love that we so boldly profess as Christians.
