Chapter 1.
Walking into town was a bad idea. I had a feeling something like this would happen. Stuff like this always happens to me. It didn't matter that I had the alpha letter saying I could pass through without any trouble in my knapsack. No, these wares just caught a whiff of a rogue and decided to mess up my day.
I didn't even get a chance to finish my shot before I could smell the change in the room. A change I learned over the years was the smell of my kind. Werewolves, or so Hollywood and fairy tales call us. I never really hung around a pack long enough to find out what they called themselves. As far as I was concerned, you get in long enough to get out. I wasn't planning on staying in this miserable hole of a town for long. Maybe a day or two. I like my freedom. And after 17 years of living in that cage, I broke free. No one was going to do that to me again. I would die before I let anyone or anything do those things to me.
The last 2 years have been a dream. Being on my own, I've learned how to take care of myself. I wasn't the same scared little girl I was back before the incident. Heck, I was tougher than most male rogues. The last rogue who thought he could play with me ended up seriously injured. I don't take kindly to others messing with me, especially when all they want is something I don't want to give. He had it coming. When a lady says no, she means no. Not that I'm much of a lady, but you get my point.
So, it was because of my past experiences that I didn't fancy the small group making ahead towards me at the moment. I could see it in their eyes, their hate or disapproval for me. I was a rogue, the savage, who would try to slaughter them in their sleep at the first chance. They weren't completely wrong, but I didn't fancy killing for the fun of it. In fact, I hated it. I still remember my first, but that was a long time coming, and there was no way I was letting him walk away from that.
"You know what we do to rogues who cross without permission?" A voice interrupted my thoughts as a large hand came around my lower back. Good plan of attack, I thought to myself. There were still humans here, and I doubt very much they knew about the wares. He had to play this stealthy, friendly, even. "You should really be more concerned about what a rogue will do to you," still staring straight ahead, looking at the numerous bottles of alcohol lining the shelves.
A small smirk plays on my lips at the thought of his hand so close to me. How easy it will be to grab him and slam his head into the countertop. The sound alone would be worth the fight. I was sure I would have with the others when they came to his aid. I'd be lucky to take down three of them altogether. Especially if I could do the beta first. With him out, the rest would be worthless. He was the biggest. The power coming off him was strong, but not like that of an alpha. If I could take him, the others wouldn't be an issue.
"Calling my bluff." One of the others laughed and spoke with distaste, lacing his voice. "The little girl wants a fight. Dev, I say we give it to her. Teach her to respect a pack." His words filled me with rage. Respect. He demands respect, yet gives none in return. This was one thing I hated about Pax. They always thought they were better than rogues, but never took the time to find out why some of us lived this way. Some were forced, some ran, and some didn't want to be ruled over. We each had our reasons, but no pack I've come across cared to ask why. Not that I would tell them my reasons. It was personal and of no importance to them. But others I had wondered upon had wanted the chance to tell their story, to ask to join another pack. They needed that life. I didn't. I didn't like it.
"This little girl should warn you. She doesn't fight fair, and she most certainly doesn't back down," turning to face the jerk who called me out. His eyes widened, but he quickly recovered, sneering at me like that would do anything. "Get her, and let's finish this, Devon. I will not be disrespected on my own land." I could tell the beta was all for it, but something was holding him back. I could see the inner conflict in his eyes as he looked at his packmates and back to me.
"You sure talk a lot for someone with no power in the pack," I eyed him up and down. He wasn't big enough to be a fighter. Maybe a runner. But I knew once it came to that fight, I would take him out quickly. He was no match for me. "You little shut it, Johnson." The beta finally chose to speak up. He looked me over a few times as if assessing what I would do if provoked. In the end, I could tell he thought me a weak rogue, being a female, and probably lacking any good fighting skills. His mistake. "Leave now and I won't let them take you out back." His words were meant to be harsh, but concern also joined the mix. He didn't like the thought of hurting, let alone killing a female. Again, his mistake.
"Thanks, Slick, but I think I'll hang around for a bit. I'm really enjoying the company this pub has to offer." Before I could reach for my drink, a hand shot out and gripped my wrist. "I said, 'Leave now.' You have 3 seconds to let go of me, stupid beta males. They always try to be the tough guy." "Or you'll what? No one will help you here." Smirking, I rolled [clears throat] my fist inward, effectively breaking his grip on me. Without a second thought, I reached out and took hold of his fist, twisting it until I could feel the muscle shake from the tension. "Now, who said I need any help?" putting just enough force in my twist to injure his wrist, I could see the beta biting his tongue to hold in the scream that was threatening to come out.
"Everyone out!" A large voice boomed throughout the small pub, and shivers ran down my spine as the power coming from the command was enough to have me wanting to get up and walk out. It was an odd sensation for me, one I wasn't used to, but I wasn't one to let go of the bone, pun intended. Smirking, I turned to face the alpha that had joined us. My smirk didn't last long. The moment I saw him, it was as if I was frozen in my spot. I couldn't think, couldn't breathe. I could only stand there and stare at this man. He was tan, tall, maybe 6'1", built like a rock. His dark jeans hung low, hugging his thick, muscular thighs. Even through his loose-fitted tee, I could see the outline of his abs, the pair of pecs that threatened to rip the material. And let us not forget the massive biceps I desperately wanted to run my hands over. He was beyond fit, and I found myself admiring him, making my way up to a pair of soft, pouty lips. As he ran his tongue over the bottom before pulling the corner between his perfectly straight teeth, I could feel my stomach flutter. His nose was perfect, sharp, but nowhere near as sharp as his cheekbones and jaw. Everything was chiseled and defined. Even his hair was perfect. Buzzed sides, but a little tousled at the top. Just enough to run my fingers through. I mentally slapped myself when I got to his eyes. I could see an equal amount of desire fill his gorgeous chocolate brown orbs. Yet, there was something else in his eyes, something I didn't recognize, and that was what finally brought me back to reality. Never had I thought of a man the way I had just now. But seeing the want and need in his eyes for me was too much. I didn't want anyone to ever look at me like that again. So, pushing down the desire to run to him, to let his arms wrap around me, I let go of his beta's hand I hadn't realized I was still holding.
"Not so mouthy now, are you, girl?" I heard the weakling Johnson spit just as a loud growl sounded throughout the room. "Speak to her again, Johnson, and you will answer to me." The alpha's voice was thick, smooth, and deep. The tingles that spread over my body doubled as goosebumps rose. I was thankful for the long-sleeve Bella sweater I was wearing, though I doubt they appreciated the giant pair of parted ruby red lips with fangs coming out that was printed on the cotton fabric. Jackson had given it to me before I left him a few months ago. He knew I was never one to stay in a place for too long, and that was his friendly parting gift. Something to remember me by, Texas. How could I forget my only friend, who, yes, happens to be a vamp, was lost to me. But I choked it up and laughed at his playfulness when he presented me with this reminder.
"Alpha, she's trespassing. Not to mention, she's one rude little troublemaker." Johnson mumbled that last bit, but didn't get a chance to say much more since I spun around. And before I knew what I was doing, I backhanded him with such force that he toppled over the bar stool and onto the floor. "Call me that name one more time, and your alpha won't have time to silence you before I do." Unclenching my jaws, I turned back to face the alpha. I knew it was a huge no-no to attack a pack member physically, but this jerk had it coming.
"Do you always greet your guest in such a manner?" Still blinded by fury, I snapped at him. Everything in me was telling me to shut my mouth and beg for forgiveness. But that really wasn't my style. And I had prior permission to come within their territory. Not waiting for an answer, I grabbed my knapsack and pulled out the letter I had received weeks before. Throwing it at the alpha, I laced up my bag and made way to sidestep him. Of course, he wouldn't allow it as his hand shot forward, blocking my only way out.
"You're Dallas." The shock in his voice confirmed that he was clearly expecting me to be a man by the way he eyed my body once again. "Thank you for the welcome, Alpha Daniels. I'll be on my way now." I sneered at him as I ducked under his arm and made my way to the door. I was halfway there when the room filled with a collective gasp before a line of well-built lads blocked the entrance of the pub. I was trapped.
Chapter 2.
"Look, I said I would leave. I meant without any trouble." I sneered, turning back to the alpha. I was nearly seeing red. This jerk thought he was going to keep me from leaving. Alpha or not, I would fight. I was 99.9% sure I would lose, but I wasn't going to be pushed around by him.
"Ryder, let her leave." The beta spoke up, eyeing his leader with a nervousness that was not unnoticed by the alpha.
"I said, 'Everyone out.' That meant all of you as well."
"Ry, are you challenging me?" That got his beta's attention. He quickly grabbed the shirt of the guy who had the nerve to call me that name and all but ran out of the building. Great. I mentally cursed myself for being so stupid. Why couldn't I have just shown them the letter to begin with? "Because you like fighting and making people angry," my subconscious reminded me. "I'm not going to apologize if that is what you expect. They both had it coming. I didn't do anything wrong. I had permission to pass through."
"And rather than just ask, they got in my face and..."
"Are you okay? Did they hurt you in any way?" I was about to scold him for cutting me off, but the concern in his voice stopped me. Wasn't he mad? I just injured his beta's wrist and slapped another member of his pack. He should be fuming right now.
"Aren't you angry?" I asked, studying his every movement. He could attack and I wouldn't be ready. Not that I could do much to him anyway. He was the big bad alpha after all.
"Extremely," he growled as his fist clenched and his muscles rippled. It was distracting. But I couldn't find the time to stop and stare at him. If he was angry, I had a slim chance of making it out of here alive. I wasn't sure what my face resembled, but I'm pretty sure I had my "Oh no, I messed up" face on because he crossed the small space between us so fast I barely had time to flinch.
"Did anyone other than Devon touch you?" Play it cool. Don't do something stupid. I screamed at myself. I had to play nice if I wanted to walk out of here on my own. "No, smooth. Where did he touch you?" I could feel my brows furrow. Why did he need to know that? "Look, I'm fine. Your beta will be fine in a few hours. Can I just leave?"
Calm down, I mentally yelled to myself. I wanted to tell myself to be quiet, but then I would have been the one to do that. So, I took my advice and breathed deeply. This was one of the strongest alphas in the world. He was not one you back-talked to. Yet, here I was, the chick who couldn't keep her mouth shut to save her life. Literally.
"No. No. I uh... you will come with me. There are things that need to be sorted and then you can be on your way if you choose."
"What? Look, I get you're the hot shot around here, but if you plan on killing me, then..."
"Killing you? Why would I kill you?" This guy, can't he just shut up and let me get out what I was going to say?
"Can I speak now, or will you just cut me off again?" I spat at him. I was seconds from doing more than that. Who did this jerk think he was? He was just some alpha who had pants on too tight, and it was cutting off the blood flow to his head.
With an amused smirk, he motioned with his hand for me to continue. I was shocked. I should be dead or close to it by now. Instead, he was standing here letting me tell him off. I didn't get it.
"I get it. I hit a member of a pack and injured another. But my actions were not unjust. I don't want to fight. I just want to leave." He studied me for a moment before reaching out and grabbing my arm. He wasn't like his beta. He was gentle, as if I were made of glass, pulling me close to him, his arms snaking around my waist.
"Don't you feel that?" he asked, genuinely confused. I could feel small tingles running up and down my body as my stomach muscles clenched with the inhaled scent of his sweet woody aroma. My body pressing closer to his, yearning to be consumed by his heat. A deep sound brought me back to reality, trying to push him away, but he wasn't having it.
"Let me go," I snapped, bringing my foot down on top of his. He hissed in response as his hold loosened enough for me to slip out. "Touch me again and I will hurt you." Pointing at him pointedly. Shock and hurt flickered in his eyes as he once again took to studying me.
"Let me speak to your wolf." His command held the alpha tone, but since I wasn't part of his pack, it had little effect on me. However, something inside me did stir at the tone.
"My what? You want me to shift? Why?" For a moment, he looked at me like I was mad, but quickly recovered. Taking a step towards me, his brow lifted as he spoke. "Don't you know how to bring your wolf to the front? Let her speak for herself without being in wolf form." Now it was my turn to look at him like he had just fallen off the banana truck.
"I don't know what you're talking about. I can't do that because I don't have a wolf. I mean, I have one, but it's me." It turned out more as a question than the statement I intended because he was staring at me strangely. There was a mix of emotions crossing his features, but confusion was the predominant one.
"Do you have a voice in your head that speaks to you? Not your thoughts, but a separate creature that lives inside you."
"What? I'm not crazy. I don't hear voices and I don't have someone or something living inside me." This dude was nuts. Off his rocker. Certifiable. Needed a one-way ticket to Looneyville. On the short bus, wearing a straight jacket and a helmet as if reading my thoughts, but more likely it was written all over my face. He took the last step between us, holding up his hands.
"You don't have a wolf. Okay, but you can shift, right?" I gave him the "Are you kidding me?" look, to which he chuckled. He just laughed like I had told the world's funniest joke. "Kind of laugh. Yes, I can shift you, [ __ ]. Would we be standing here if I couldn't?" As soon as the word [ __ ] came out of my mouth, his laughter stopped. I couldn't keep my mouth shut. Could I?
"You really need to work on that mouth of yours. Come with me. That isn't a request."
"Why? So you can kill me?" I said before my brain could tell my body to do as he said and to do it without speaking.
"No one will harm you, Dallas. I don't want to kill you. I want to get to know you." Ignoring the shiver that ran through my body at the sound of my name leaving his lips, I gathered all my strength to speak without sounding like an idiot.
"Trust me, you don't," I said, turning on my heel and flicked my hands forward as I spoke again. "Lead the way."
Chapter 3.
The drive to his pack house was beyond awkward. It didn't help that I refused to shift and run with him. The short drive was spent in silence, giving me plenty of opportunity to look around and find a way out of here. Or so I thought. About a mile away from the supposed turnoff, I could see the lining of small cameras placed in the trees. Once you got to the main turnoff, there was an actual guard posted up manning the steel gate. From there, it was about 5 miles until you came upon a large brick house. The red bricks faded in the sun and weather, but seemed to give off an inviting feel to it. Warm and cozy even if you weren't there as a prisoner, which at the moment I felt very much like one. The large SUV we rode in had a square shape. I had Alpha Daniels to my right near the door and his beta Devon on my left near the window. In front of me were the three men who blocked my exit back at the pub. I had no way of skipping out with them all eyeing my every movement.
At the start of the drive, I shifted in my seat. The warm, cushiony seats were practically begging me to sink in and take a nap. So, I gave in. Bad idea. As soon as I nestled in, I had three pairs of hands gripping my arms, pulling me up, and searching the seats. "I was just getting comfortable, you [ __ ]! You really think I would do something to the car while I'm in it?" I glare at the three men, doing my best to push them all off. I was able to get two off without trouble when I felt a pair of arms go around my waist. "Touch her again and I will kill you." Though said completely calm, the alpha's words held promise and rage. What was with him? I may not have known pack life, but I'd heard enough to know that you don't [ __ ] with a pack. Especially with the alpha right there and get away with it. My little stunt at the pub alone should have been enough to ensure my immediate death. Yet, here he was again sticking up for me. It was weird, yet not as weird as having to sit in his lap for the remainder of the drive. I did my best not to move. I could feel his arousal poking into the curve of my ass. As if sensing my discomfort, he lifted me and shifted himself without the others noticing. Once I was back in my previous spot in his lap, he looked at me with a small smile playing at his lips while his eyes burned into mine. Lust was the only emotion flickering in them. And in that moment, it hit me. He just wanted me for sex. Rage filled me at the thought. I was just a plaything to him, something he could dominate and use. And when he was done, who knows what he would allow to happen to me. I was, after all, disposable, a rogue that no one would care to ask questions about. Thankfully, we pulled into the mile-long stretch just as visions of ripping his throat out came to mind. Looking everywhere but at him, I took in all my surroundings. Once the car was parked, the three men were the first to get out, followed by Devon. Just as I was about to get up, Alpha Daniels pulled me back.
"I'll be watching, but if anyone harms or is not respectful to you, you are to tell me at once. Understand?" I scoffed and rolled my eyes. "Yeah, sure thing, dick. I'll be sure to tell you if anyone messes with your momentary piece of ass," I thought to myself. Thankfully, my reply was less pointed. "I can take care of myself."
"I mean it. Stick close to me." With that, he lifted me and easily maneuvered out of the car. Setting me down, I turned and went to the boot of the large SUV. Reaching for the handle, his hand stopped me.
"Leave it. I'll have one of my men bring them in and get your things settled in a room," giving me a smile that I immediately wanted to slap off. No way in hell was I staying here. He could kill me or cut me loose. Those were the only options available to this mother.
"I'll take my own things. I don't like others touching my stuff. Or me." I sneered, pulling my hand from his grasp.
"It's not like anyone here would want your filthy [ __ ] anyway. Goddess only knows what diseases you rogues have." A voice spat as a tall, slim, big-busted blonde came into view. Before I could even say anything, Alpha Daniel stepped in front of me.
"Good thinking. I was a second away from kicking her ass. First and last warning, Jasmine. You will not speak to her that way again." Doing my best to ignore the tightening of my stomach as his growl echoed through the surrounding forest. I looked out from behind him just in time to see a cute, short, petite redhead making her way over to us.
"Ignore her. She has a stiletto permanently lodged up her ass." She giggled as she made her way towards me. Eyeing the alpha, she looked to be asking permission for something. With a curt nod, he stepped out of the way.
"Hey, I'm Cordy, Devon's mate, so you're the trouble Johnson was telling us about." I wasn't sure if it was meant to be an insult, but the way her eyes danced with humor and the shaking of her head told me it wasn't. Her next words confirmed it. "Ignore him, too. He's just pissed Alpha Ryder won't let him fight. You know, because he's so small and all." This had her out and out laughing. She nearly doubled over, holding her sides. As the chuckles continued, "He's still growing, unlike some little pests. Not much can be done about those like you." Blondie sneered, looking down her nose at the friendly girl.
Another growl was heard, but this time it wasn't from the alpha. His beta walked around from the other side of the car and right up to Cordy, kissing the top of her head as he glared at the bimbo. "Watch it, Jasmine. You're already on his [ __ ] list. Do not get on mine. Talk to my mate like that again. And female or not, I will put you in your place."
"I'll grab your things. If that is okay with you," Cordy asked, trying to ease some of the tension around us, but looking like she would be more than happy to help. Proud even if I accepted her offer. Eyeing her, I shook my head. "No thank you. I'll manage." Guilt quickly filled me from the hurt look in her eyes.
"Silicone is right. My bags aren't the cleanest. I'd feel bad if you got your nice dress dirty on my account," giving her my best smile as I heard the huff of the bimbo as she walked away. I muttered to myself. This only made Cordy crack up again.
"God, how can one person be so happy?" I thought as she turned to the beta. "Oh, Goddess, that was great. Wasn't that great, babe?" He looked at her with awe and chuckled. Wow. She had him whipped. I got the feeling he'd do anything for her just by the way he was staring at her, sticking out my hand. I cleared my throat to get her attention.
"Dallas."
"Oh, I like that. But you're not American." Cocking her head to the side, she looked at me expectantly.
"No, I'm not." I could tell she wanted more details, but it was none of her business. No matter how friendly she was, I wasn't about to start trying to make friends. She didn't need my life story.
"I'll take your bags and I'll help you get settled in," Alpha spoke, amusement clear in his tone, but he didn't say anything. As he opened the boot and gathered my things, trying to calm myself, I closed my eyes and counted to 10. I wasn't even three when his hand intertwined with mine, pulling me up the path to the door. Walking in, he didn't give me a chance to stop and look around. Instead, he led me straight past the large group that was staring at us with wide eyes and up the stairs, stopping at the last door in the hall. As soon as I was inside, I knew exactly where I was. His bedroom.
"I'm not staying, so there is no need to unzip that." I was thankful for the coldness in my voice, especially since everything about this extra-large room just screamed for me to stay, to get comfortable, and never leave it. The icy blue walls were covered with a variety of black and white photos of different sizes. A massive bed on one side, the blue and silver duvet dangled over the sides as the many throw pillows threatened to eat up half the bed, and a large built-in bookshelf sat opposite it. A huge flat screen on one shelf, hundreds of books lining the others. There were small side tables on each end of the bed with cute little metal lamps, a small dark blue wicker hamper in the corner near a door I assume led to a bathroom just on my left. On my right, I see a set of double doors likely leading to the closet. But what really held the attention of the room were the French doors leading out to a balcony. The long silver drapes looked to be made of silk as they shone in the evening light, giving the room a warm glow and sense of homeiness.
My intake of the room was interrupted as Alpha spoke. "You are not going anywhere. Get comfortable." So stoic. It was like talking to a [ __ ] caveman. I half expected him to beat his chest. Yet I knew without a doubt that I wouldn't be able to leave. I wouldn't make it one foot out of this house if he didn't want me to.
"Fine." Huffing, I walked over and grabbed my things. Looking at me with confusion, he raised his eyebrow. "Find me another room. I will not be staying in this one." Anger passed in his eyes before they turned black, his body slightly shaking.
"And what is wrong with this room, may I ask?" The clenching of his jaw should have scared me. But instead, I felt that odd tingle of my skin like at the pub and tightening of my lower stomach muscles.
"I will not be staying in your room, Alpha. I'm sure there are many who would love to share your bed, but I am not one of them." The distaste for the situation was clear in my voice as I picked up my bag, ready to exit his room.
"Share my bed?" he whispered to himself as he thought about what I just said. Realization hit him and he glared at me. His top lip trembled with disgust. "Is that why you think you are here? It's pretty [ __ ] obvious, isn't it? Why else would you bring a female rogue back?"
"What? Can't get your kicks from one of the bimbos around here?" I spit at him though something inside me was telling me to drop to my knees, apologize, and beg for forgiveness. Even if it meant opening up, I needed to have his forgiveness. Pushing the thoughts away, I held my ground. No man or wolf would ever use me like that. Not again.
With four large steps, he had me pinned up against the door, lifting me from my thighs as he wrapped my legs around his waist, one hand under my butt as the other ran through my hair. He lowered his lips to mine. I expected something rough and demanding. Yet his kiss was soft and caressing, moving against my lips in a slow, almost sweet way that nearly had my toes curling and my womb clenching with need. As swiftly as he began, he was finished. Still holding me, he pulled back and stared at me. Too many emotions playing in his eyes to see them all. I focused on the one that showed the most hurt.
"That is not the reason you are here. I meant what I said earlier. No one will harm you. That includes me. I would never take a woman unwillingly, especially if that woman is you." I looked at him for the first time. Really looked at him and saw a truthful man. He wouldn't force himself on me or allow others to try. But of course, with me being well, I had to open my mouth.
"Maybe not. But apparently, you can't keep your lips to yourself." Unfortunately, that didn't come out the way I had hoped it would. Instead of sounding angry or annoyed, it came out as teasing and playful. To top it off, the smirk that now graced his features told me he was enjoying my reply and perhaps planning on kissing me again.
"Don't worry, Dallas. I want your heart more than I want your body." Just as I was about to ask him what the hell that meant, there was a knock at the door.
"Dinner's ready."
Chapter 4.
After our little encounter in his room, Alpha all but dragged me down the stairs to the kitchen. As soon as we walked in, the room went silent. "This is Dallas. You will treat her with respect." It didn't slip my attention that he was looking directly at Jasmine. I could see the argument her eyes held, but thinking better of it, she simply nodded and dropped her eyes to her plate. A chorus of "yes, Alpha" and "welcome" went around the table as we made our way to our seats. I wanted to sit as far from him as possible, but he wasn't having it. The only good thing about sitting next to him was the fact that I also got to sit next to Cord. She just gave off this warm vibe that the others didn't. If anyone here were to accept me, it would be her. Not that I was looking for acceptance. Heck, if anything, I was looking for a way out. I knew I couldn't handle pack life, and I wasn't about to try to learn how. Now, I like being on my own. I like having my freedom, and most of all, I like not having to answer to anyone.
"You can sit now, sweetie. I won't bite you. Well, unless you want me to," Cordy said, her tone saucy and playful as she winked at me, then cracked up as Devon sent her a warning growl. I almost laughed at his reaction. Everyone could clearly see she was joking. So, of course, I had to add to the fire a bit.
"Oh, love, you can bite me anytime you want," I said, taking my seat. Even to my own ears, the sound was too husky, too playful. I would have played it off with a wink and a chuckle if it weren't for the loud throaty growl Alpha Daniels let out. No one but I will be biting you. I was slightly taken aback by the conviction of his words, the absolute in his tone. Instantly, I hated it. No one will be biting me. Period. Locking eyes with him, I could see he saw my words as a challenge. One I knew he wouldn't back down from. And that had me wanting to run from here as fast as possible. Ignoring the strange, unfamiliar pain that came with the thought of leaving, I only knew I had to find a way out of here as soon as I could.
"Ryder," Jasmine started, but was soon cut off as Alpha Daniel snapped his head in her direction, glaring at her. "You will not address me so casually."
"But Ry, I mean alpha, you never had an issue with it before." I could hear the double meaning behind her words, but didn't care to think about what they meant. I figured as an alpha, he would have been with at least half his pack by now. That's how alphas were. They could hang out with anyone they wanted for fun.
"Oh, please, Silicone. He's only told you like 80 billion times." I had to laugh at Cord's casual reference and use of my earlier name-calling of Jasmine. It was hilarious. And thankfully, I wasn't the only one who found it. So, as half the table laughed or snickered, I noted even Alpha Daniels turned and played his chuckle off as a cough.
"Devon, you need to rein your little pup. I'm sure her father would love to hear about this." The smug smirk on her face told me that it was a threat. She had something against Cordy. I could feel the rage coming off Devon in waves when he looked to his girl, and she mouthed for him to calm down.
"You threaten her or any member of this pack again, and I promise you, your father won't hold such power. I didn't give him that position to let him abuse it for your spoiled ways. If I find out that he did, I won't hesitate to throw you both out." Looking like she had just been slapped, Jasmine got to her feet and headed for the door, only to turn back and look over her shoulder. "I'll be sure to tell Tris you won't be making it tomorrow." I looked around at all the faces at the table and saw that everyone had suddenly become very interested in their plates. I wondered what position her father held and why the mention of this Tris had turned the alpha red with anger.
"Get Richard here now. I think it's time he and I had a little talk about her." The command was in full swing as Devon got up from the table and nodded. Jeez, he could at least let him finish his dinner, I thought as I saw the beta kiss Cordy on the head and start to walk off.
"That was rude. You could have waited until he was done before you started barking orders." I huffed as I watched everyone at the table gasp and let their jaws drop. Great. I did it again.
"Devon, she's right. Please come back and finish. Just link with him now and tell him to keep Tristan clear of Jasmine until I pick him up later."
"Yes, Alpha." I was slightly embarrassed by my actions, but not enough to show it. I may not like the lad, but I would never make him starve so that I could be a lazy person and not take care of my own business. That was another thing I hated about alphas. They sit around all day telling others what to do.
"You're going to be good for him," I heard Cordy mumble before she started to dig into her food. I looked at her with a shocked expression, only earning me a giggle before I turned to my plate.
"He'll be here shortly, Alpha," Devon said as he sat back down. I gave him a confused look. "How do you know?" "You didn't call anyone?" I asked, pure curiosity lacing my tone. I could feel Alpha Daniels' eyes on me, but I ignored them as I looked to Devon for an answer.
"I used the pack link much faster than a mobile," he joked as my confusion grew. He chuckled and looked to the alpha. With a small nod, he turned his attention back to me. "Each pack can mind link with the other members of their pack. You didn't know that?" He stared at me like I was a science experiment, studying me for my reaction. I narrowed my eyes at him. I didn't like anyone looking at me like that.
"I've never known pack life." I looked right at him, ignoring the gasp from the others present. I wasn't about to go into detail, just like I wasn't about to show any weakness or emotion about not knowing pack life. There was a lot I didn't know about wares, but I always figured with time I would find out as much as I could. Most rogues weren't really talkative until a year ago. I didn't even know what I was. I happened to wander upon Jackson, and he did his best to explain what he could to me. Other than shifting, I really didn't know what else there was to being a ware.
I noticed both Devon and Alpha Daniels looking at one another. The slight movements of their heads and their facial expressions suggested they were silently, mentally, having a discussion. Finally, Devon looked at me and smirked. I immediately felt uneasy. What were they talking about? Obviously, it had something to do with me, and that was something I didn't like. I had to get out of here before I could say anything stupid or out of line.
"Alpha Daniels may..."
"Ryder." He cut me off with a firm look.
"Huh?"
"Call me Ryder. Alpha Daniels was my father." He gave me an encouraging smile while his tone was calm and collected. I figured that last bit was meant to be playful, but with his tone, it just sounded like a statement. Who knows? Maybe it was just a statement with him. You couldn't tell. He was just so serious all the time.
"Alp... No alpha, just Ryder." Again, he cut me off and I felt my blood boil. I hated it when people did that. Did this jerk know I was doing my best to show respect? He may not deserve it. I had yet to decide on that, but I was already in hot water, so I figured I needed to keep formalities at least.
"You know, it's rude to cut others off while they're speaking. Now, if I may, Ryder, I'd like to be excused." I did my best to keep my temper in check, but the more I looked at this man, the more I felt my blood heat. He was pushing my buttons. All the while, humor played in his eyes. It was so infuriating.
"Of course, you must be exhausted. Go rest for a bit. Tonight, I have someone I'd like you to meet." Getting up from the table, I nodded. I could nap. Then his last words hit me.
"Who am I meeting?" I asked wearily, almost afraid of the answer.
"My son."
Chapter 5.
As I lay in the alpha, I mean Ryder's bed, I couldn't help but think about why he wanted me to meet his son. I knew nothing about him, his pack, or this boy. So, why would he like me, of all people, to meet [clears throat] his son? It just didn't make any sense. Many things didn't make sense when it came to Ryder. I was nervous, but excited. I wasn't sure why, but the thought of spending time with him in such a personal setting had my heart beating faster. Without thinking, I had snuggled under the duvet and was now inhaling his scent. Something about it both calmed and excited me. That alone had me thinking of ways to get out of here. I didn't belong here. The sooner I left, the better. Yet again, the thought of leaving had pained me. I felt my lungs close and breathing became difficult. Not knowing what to do, I settled for throwing the blanket over my head and curling into a ball with his pillow clutched to my chest. It seemed to help in some ways. I lay there for a while, just breathing him in and letting his scent wash over me. I felt my stomach flutter as images of him filled my head. Overwhelmed by the new and confusing feelings. I clutched the pillow tighter. Lost in my thoughts, I hadn't noticed the door swing open. It wasn't until a loud growl pierced through the air that I realized I was suddenly not alone. Standing there in the doorway was Ryder. His hands were fisted at his sides and his heavy breathing was the only sound to be heard. Mortified, I jumped from the bed. The duvet fell to the floor as I dashed for the bathroom. As if reading my mind, Ryder stepped in front of me, finding my waist as he spun us around and trapped me between his hard chest and the door.
"Let go of me." I didn't like the look in his eyes as he stared down at me. Wiggling to get free was no use. It only seemed to make him more intense. The groan he let out should have had me fighting harder to get free. Yet instead, I felt my stomach flutter, burying his nose in the crook of my neck, he inhaled deeply. When he spoke just below my ear, the sound I had been holding in escaped, found it, his voice thick, husky. He held me tightly, his hand on my hip. And in that moment, reality hit me. Freezing in his arms, I dropped my hand that had somehow found its way to his side. Sensing me and my now distant stature, he nuzzled his nose once more into my neck before pulling back to look down at me. Intensity still glazing his eyes, but also hurt, shock, and something else I couldn't put my finger on.
"I'm sorry." As soon as the words left his mouth, I pushed him off me. He stumbled backwards a bit with a look of pure curiosity. Before he had the chance to say anything else, I bolted to the door that led to the ensuite. I was horrified by both my actions and his. How did I just let that happen? Better yet, how could I allow myself to feel that way about him? I had never done that. Never allowed myself to think about a man in that way before. Pain and torture were all I knew of relationships. And yet, I had just felt that intense pull to a man I not only didn't know, but also to a man who reminded me of him. Sure, Ryder was nicer, gentler, more caring, but in the end, he was just like him, keeping me against my will, holding me until he was done using me. Then he would do the same. He would tire of me and only use me to take his frustrations out on. Thinking about it all now, I slid down to the floor, doing my best to block out the memories of my life before I ran away, before I broke free. After years of holding it all in, it all seemed to want to come out now. I could feel the salty wetness threatened to fall from my eyes. The dam of tears I've held in for the last 6 years trying to break free finally. But I wouldn't let it. Perhaps one day I would let those tears fall. But today was not that day. Shaking my head and pulling myself to my feet, I pushed down any feelings as I turned on my heel and made my way back out to the bedroom.
"You should forget what just happened. It won't be happening again and I really don't want to hear a word on it," I said with my head held high as I walked to the closet and pulled out my only pair of clean jeans. I was out of luck when it came to a clean shirt. So, popping my head out of the door, I asked for Cordy. Within seconds, she was in the room with a handful of clothing, shoeing me off into the shower. I spent more time in there than I wanted to. Mainly to think about the last few hours, just standing in the hot water thinking about everything that had happened in such a short amount of time. Mainly, I thought of ways to get out of here, knowing that my only options included death or surrender. I wasn't too keen on the second one. I could never surrender. I could never give up and give Ryder what he wanted. I wasn't staying here. I wasn't going to be used. And I wasn't going to choose pack life over my freedom. Besides, death never really seemed like a bad option if you asked me. No more pain, no more running, just the endlessness of everything. Even if there was a heaven, I knew I would never be accepted there. I only wished.
That it was nothingness in the end. Interrupting my thoughts, Cordy walked in, grabbed my arm, and dragged me out of the bathroom, doing my best to keep calm. I didn't want to hurt her. I knew she was a sweet girl, and I didn't want to hurt her any more than I was planning on. If I could keep her at a distance, then when the time came to make my move, I would be able to leave her in peace. Of course, she would have to move on and find a new partner. But she was cute and kind. She would have no problems with that.
I didn't like the idea of harming Devon, but as a beta, he would die for Ryder, and I couldn't bring myself to think of that. As I thought about it, Cord was holding up different outfits, asking which I liked best. I decided on my jeans and a loose tea from her pile. I wasn't meeting the queen, just a little boy. "What are you thinking about so hard?" Cordy threw me a knowing smirk. Though I doubt she knew what was on my mind. Otherwise, that smirk would have been replaced with a death glare. Maybe even a few punches.
"Just my plans when I finally get to leave." I wasn't prepared for the shocked look on her face as my words hit her. Her bright eyes searched mine as she studied me. "You can't leave. Does Ryder know?"
As his mate, Cordelia. Ryder stood in the doorway looking at her intently. Again, I could see the silent conversation taking place, but didn't understand why it would shock her further. By the loud gasp that left her lips, I guess that he told her something important. "I'm ready when you are," I huffed, not liking the fact that they were standing here in front of me, acting like I wasn't in the room. Ryder nodded once and turned back to Cordy, raising an eyebrow to her as she nodded once and looked to me. "Have fun tonight. I want to hear all about it tomorrow." With a small smile and awkward hug, she turned and left. Not wanting to be alone any more than needed with Ryder. I grabbed my hoodie and walked out. Making my way downstairs, not bothering to look back to see if he was following me. I didn't have to. The tingles shooting through me told me he was.
Once outside, I noticed the car parked in the driveway and approached it, only to have my arm gently gripped and pulled back in the opposite direction. "It's just around the corner. I thought we could walk." Mumbling my sure. We started. I could feel his eyes on me, but I didn't want to look at him. I hated how he constantly stared at me. I was tempted to tell him to take a picture, but something told me he had no issue whipping out his mobile to do just that. So, I settled for the more blunt approach. "Stop staring at me. It freaks me out. I don't like others to take notice of me. So, when you just stand there staring, it's uncomfortable." Not meeting his eyes, I stared off in the distance ahead of us. I didn't have to look at him to know I just hurt his feelings. As if sending his pain my way, I felt a pinch to my heart. I nearly asked for forgiveness, but knew I had done nothing wrong. I wasn't the one holding me against my will, and I certainly wasn't the one staring at him like he was my next meal.
"I'm sorry. I didn't mean to make you feel that way. I just can't help it," he said as he shoved his hands into his front pockets. His shoulders hunched a little, reminding me of a child being scolded. It was cute. Shaking all thoughts of Ryder and his cuteness away. I tried to think of something to say that wouldn't come out rude or mean. I was also a bit worried I would spit out a comment about his cuteness. So, I decided to keep my mouth shut. He had other plans, though. "So, Cordy tells me you're leaving."
This time, I looked at him. I wanted him to know what I thought about his private mental conversations in my presence. "You can also stop talking to your pack in your mind when you're around me as well. It's annoying. And if you don't want me to hear whatever it is you want to say, then it's best to just let me go now. That way, you can talk about me all you want, and I won't have to stand there like a fool in the dark, just taking it." Okay, so maybe that wasn't the best topic to bring up. I meant to express my thoughts, but they turned out a bit harsher than I had planned. What is wrong with me? There had to be something because I've never cared this much about what I said to others. I've always said my peace and forgotten them if they didn't like it. Now I'm left wondering if I was too rude, too harsh, or too mean to this man. I had known him for a few hours, and already I was changing. I didn't like the idea of that, so the sooner I got on with my plan, the better.
"I didn't know you noticed those. I wasn't trying to be rude. I simply didn't want you to hear me reprimanding my pack in front of you and have you believe it was your fault." He gave me a warm smile, stepping closer to me. I couldn't move away from him. As we walked, I tried to get my body to s sideestep and put some distance between us. But every time I went to do so, my body refused. Trying once more, I lifted my foot and widened my stance, hoping to make it look natural. Instead, at the last moment before my foot touched down, it shifted, and I fell forward with a quickness I had never seen. Ryder's arms shot out, wrapping around my waist as he steadied me, clinging to his arms. I got lost in his eyes. For once, it was I who couldn't look away. I just stared at the warm brown orbs that inched closer to mine. Leaning in, I could feel his hot, minty breath on my face. As much as I found myself excited at the thought of kissing him again, I knew I couldn't.
"I'm leaving as soon as I can." The words came rushing out of my mouth as he pulled back, recoiling from me as if I had slapped him. "You could stay. You could have a life here." His words were soft, almost pleading. "Have a life here with you." His eyes lit up with hope. "I had to change that playhouse until you got tired of me and threw me out with the rest of the rubbish. I like my life the way it is. I don't want you or anyone else. I'm happy on my own." Instantly, he released me, his eyes turning black as he ran his fingers through his hair. Without another word, he started walking again. I knew I had upset him, but it had to be done. I wasn't willing to change for anyone, least of all him. I just saved him from a lot of hurt. Though the pain I caused him didn't sit well with me. I wanted to run to him, pull him close, and hold him. But that would only make things harder for me when I left. So, I kept silent and walked behind him instead.
Looking up, I saw a large house a few feet ahead of us. The lights were all on as two figures stood on the porch. A tall, slim man pushed the little boy forward as he bent down to speak into his ear. Seconds later, the small boy was running full speed towards us, yelling, "Daddy!" as he sprinted over the well-groomed lawn. Just as we got to the end of the driveway, Ryder kneled and opened his arms for the child to jump into, placing small kisses on his head while spinning around. Ryder laughed when the boy began to beg him to stop. It was the first time I had heard his laugh. A real laugh. Immediately, I loved it. Seeing this side of him was heartwarming. Finally, the small boy noticed me. "Daddy, who's that?" Ryder stopped, tensing, and looked at me. I didn't care at the moment that he was staring at me again. I only cared about the toddler standing in front of me. His chocolate orbs were bright with wonder as his thin, tiny lips held the biggest smile I had ever seen. His mop of sandy locks was such a contrast to Ryder's as was the bright smile that still hadn't left his face. "Tristan, this is Dallas. She's our guest."
Still holding Tristan's gaze, he stepped away from Ryder, slowly making his way to me, and he sniffed the air around us. "You're pretty, but you smell different. not like us. I like it." I had to laugh at that. I doubted he had met many rogues, so of course he didn't know to be frightened of us. Not that he should be afraid of me. The instant he came into the light of the street lamp, my heart melted. I wanted nothing more than to scoop him up and bury my nose in his hair as I hugged him. "I do smell different. But you must remember that any others who smell like me aren't going to be as nice. So if you ever smell someone like me, I want you to run the other direction. I want you to run to your dad and tell him straight away. Can you do that for me?" I said, kneeling and placing my hand on his shoulder as I did my best to give him a comforting smile. As soon as my hand touched him, I felt a warmth spread over me. Something inside me telling me to pull him close and never let him go. As if sensing it, Tristan fell into my arms, wrapping his small ones around my neck as he lay his head on my shoulder. "You'll stay to make sure they are nice to me, won't you?" The longing in his voice nearly brought me to tears. This small child who didn't know me was asking me to protect him, to watch out for him. In that instant, my resolve to leave this pack in my dust had broken. All that was left was the image of Ryder and Tristan standing there with open arms. An image that I found both very appealing and very appalling. As soon as I looked down into Tristan's eyes, I knew I was stuck.
Chapter 6. "I uh I It's late. How about we get you home and in bed?" I couldn't do it. I couldn't look into Tristan's big brown eyes and tell him I wasn't sticking around much longer. Something about this kid just drew me in, and I felt like I would literally die if I wasn't with him. Pulling back, I steadied him before getting to my feet. Just as I did, his little arms lifted in the air, his eyes practically begging me to pick him up and carry him. The funny thing was that was exactly what I wanted to do. I wanted this tiny boy in my arms to hear his little breaths as he rested his head on my shoulder. I was about to pick him up when the sound of a door slamming caught my attention. Looking up, I saw Jasmine running towards us. A furious glare on her face as she looked between me and Tris. At first, I thought it was because of her love for the boy that she didn't want him near a rogue. But as she got closer, I could see the way she looked at him. Hatred filled her eyes as she sneered at the toddler. He was just a pawn in her game. She would leave him the instant she didn't need him anymore. In that moment, I truly wanted to hurt her. I may not have been the warmest person around, but I sure as heck wasn't as evil as her to use a child for her gain. I knew instantly that Tristan wasn't hers. Heck, I wasn't 100% sure he was even Ryder's. The only difference was that he truly cared for the boy. So lost in my thoughts, I almost didn't see her reach for Tris. Her long nails curled as she went to grab for him. The need to protect him fueled me as I pushed him behind me with gentle care. Within a second, I had my arm out, hand clenched around her throat as she shrieked in horror. She didn't see that coming. She assumed I wouldn't do anything around Ryder. She didn't even look at Tristan, so I knew she really didn't care what happened to him. "Do not touch him." My voice came out as calm and menacing. Staring her dead in the eyes, she flinched at my tone.
"Dallas let her go now." Ryder's words held his alpha tone. And as much as I felt the need to obey him, the thought of her hurting Tristan outweighed that feeling. And somehow I knew she had at some point this disgusting excuse for a person had hurt this child. And I wanted nothing more than to repay the favor. "Let me go before I hurt you, you stupid woman."
"Your D." I nearly laughed when Tristan stepped out from behind me and kicked her leg hard. But the anger in his eyes made my heart drop. It was too much anger for such a small child to have. I should know. I've had that same look on my face since I was his age. "You try it and you'll be sorry. So will Daddy." The glare that Tristan was sending her was adorable. He was beat red and clenching his little fists to his sides, his lips pursed as his small nostrils flared. Had I not been holding her, I would have knelt and kissed away his deep frown.
"Tristan Davis Daniels. You will not speak to a woman that way." Ryder's voice boomed as Tristan stepped back behind me, clinging to my leg as he sniffled. I was torn between yelling at Ryder for making him cry and telling Tristan he was right, that women deserved respect. Maybe not this one, but most. It was so odd the conflicting feelings I had for these two. "Dallas, you will put her down this instant. Please, I don't want to have to hurt you. But I can't just let you attack a female member of my pack for no reason."
"No." Though his words came out harsh, there was something behind them, almost a pleading for me to give him a reason to allow me to continue just as Tris screamed no at him. I knew he was worried Ryder would actually hurt me, but I knew he wouldn't. He had put up with a lot from me, and this wouldn't be the straw that broke his back in punishing me. Or at least I hoped it wouldn't be. Knowing I would never get the woman in front of me to tell the truth, I had no choice but to let her go. Just as soon as I did, I picked up Tristan, running my hand up and down his back to soo him. I turned away from Ryder, who was now trying to calm the overdramatic Jasmine. "Tris, love, I know she's hurt you." The way he dropped his head all but told me it was true. I could see shame flicker in his eyes before they fell. "That woman, I would make her pay. It's okay, sweetie. I'm here. But I need you to tell your dad what she did. I promise I won't let her do it ever again." Looking up at me, his dough eyes held fear, but also hope. "You promise?" I chuckled and kissed his forehead. This kid will be the death of me, but I couldn't deny him this or anything else. "I swear."
Ryder's POV. I was so relieved when Dallas dropped Jasmine. There was no way I would ever have been able to punish my mate. Yet, I knew if she didn't accept me soon, I might have to. I needed to get her comfortable with me before I could tell her about us. I don't know how it was possible, but she knew absolutely nothing about our kind. What puzzled me more was the fact that she didn't have a wolf. It would have helped. Her wolf could have explained things to her. I was dead serious when I had asked her if she could even shift. She may smell like a wor, but some halflings smell like us also. However, they would never be able to change without the bite. At first, I thought maybe she was an alpha's halfling. They get the smell, but none of the abilities, but she didn't share a scent I recognized. I knew the instant I smelled her in the pub that she was my mate. I would do anything for her. She just had to let me in. I was getting closer. The bond I had with Tristan somehow expanded over to her, more than likely because we were mates. Yet, it almost seemed as if she had made her own bond with him. The way she looked at him like he was her own pup. The moment he asked about her, I freaked out. I didn't know if she would reject both of us. The look that clouded her eyes told me she would never reject him. I was both elated and saddened in that moment. Happy because she bonded to him so quickly, but sad because there was still a chance she would reject me when she found out about us. I felt a little tug on my shirt and looked down at Tristan. Watching him, he pulled up his sleeve. I was shocked to see the faint bruising around his small arm. Anger coursed through me at the thought of someone hurting him. The adult handprint on his skin was more than enough to have my wolf trying to surface. "What happened?" I roared. I didn't mean to sound so temperamental, but I was seconds from losing it. The whimpers that came from him calmed me instantly. I didn't mean to frighten him. "It's nothing. He was playing the other day, and I I had to grab him." Jasmine stuttered her explanation, but I could hear the lie behind it. I didn't get a chance to react before Dallas did. She lunged at her, teeth bared as she went for her again. "You'll pay." That was all that was heard before a scream of pain pierced the air. Pulling Tris behind me, I used the pack link to get Devon and Johnson here right away. I would make Jasmine pay for doing this to my son, but I would do it the right way. Seeing Jasmine injured had my wolf purring in contentment as we watched Dallas defend our pup. Pride was glowing out of me as I saw the others appear. Devon, still in human form, and Johnson, in wolf form, were running toward us. "Why is she attacking Jasmine?" [clears throat] Johnson's voice was frantic. I could see the worry in his eyes as he watched his sister being attacked. I didn't give him an answer as I spun and gripped him firmly. I knew how close they were. And Goddess helped me. If he knew what she had done to Tristan, I would have two bowers to deal with. This was the only reason I had called for him as well. I had to know if he knew about this. "Did you know?" I could see the confusion in his face as my alpha tone settled in. He looked around for a hint of what he might or might not know. "Did you know she was hurting Tristan?" As my words hit him, horror, fury, and revulsion all flashed over his features as he looked down at his sister. I didn't need a mental spoken answer. The look on his face told me it all. Letting him go, I didn't expect what happened next. The moment his paws touched the ground, he was airborne, flying towards Dallas, teeth bared. our mate. My wolf was ready to shift when I saw that Dallas was trying to get up and push Johnson out of the way. I nearly laughed. They were fighting, yes, but they were fighting over who got to hurt Jasmine next. Johnson had Jasmine's shoulder in his mouth, pulling firmly as Dallas was pulling his ears and yelling for him to get off. That it was her fight, not his. A tiny whimper pulled me back. I looked over at Tristan on the ground, his knees pulled up to his chest as he rocked back and forth, his head resting against his legs. I could feel his fear, his worry, and his sadness as he thought about losing Dallas. He was terrified that Johnson and the others were going to harm her. He was mad he couldn't help her. But most of all, he was heartbroken that he would never get the chance to love her and have her love him. She would never be the mom he prayed for nightly. All because he told the truth and pointed out Jasmine enough. Everyone froze in their spots, eyes cast down, afraid to look at me. all but Dallas. Her eyes searched for Tristan. Once she found him, she pushed Johnson back and ran to him, drawing him into her arms as she turned her back on me and started walking back towards the pack house. "I'm taking him home. I'd keep that piece of work away from me. Next time, I will end her." I stood there watching as she comforted Tris, who faded into the distance. Her love for him warmed both my wolf and me. She called the pack house home. I know she didn't mean it as hers, but soon she would. Soon she would love me and my wolf as much as she loved our pup. The thought of that had my wolf jumping in excitement. He would b his time and when she fell for us, we would mark her and never let go.
Chapter 7. Walking into the pack house was uncomfortable. Everyone gawkked at me as I shifted a sleeping Tristan in my arms. One of the younger girls made her way towards me, arms stretched out to take him. The growl that came from me was enough to have her stop in her tracks. "Careful, she bites." The musical laughter of Cordi was heard before she was seen. Pushing her way through the crowd, she stopped in front of me and looked at Tris. Sympathy written all over her face as she bent down and placed a small kiss on his forehead. I couldn't help the small growl that escaped my throat from her actions. And as soon as it left me, I felt guilty. I knew she would never hurt him, but I didn't like her display of affection towards him. He was mine. Shaking the possessive thoughts and feelings away, I muttered an awkward sorry. "No worries. I should have known better. I can feel the bond." It was stupid of me. Cocking my head to the side, I tried to figure out what she meant by the bond. Sensing my confusion, she shook her head and waved her hand for me to follow her. "Come on, I'll show you to his room," nodding, I followed her up the stairs to the door just across from Ryder's room. Setting him in his bed, I pulled off his shoes and tucked him in. Looking around, a smile played on my lips as I took in his personal space. His bed frame was black, complimented by the midnight blue bedding. The soft pearl carpet was unstained and spotless, aside from the dozens of toys that littered the floor. His drawers were all pushed in except for the top one, which had socks and a pair of pants hanging out. Chuckling, I walked over and shoved the contents back in and closed it silently. Looking at the pictures on top, he and Ryder are playing football out back, both with wide grins and bright eyes. Just as I put the picture back down, I spotted a small red wolf carving. The details were intricate. Each line of fur so complex it almost looked real. Everything from the tail to the muzzle was a splitting image of my own wolf. He even had the small branding on my shoulder that showed through when I shifted. "He made that last year. Says it's his mother wolf." Warmth spread throughout me at the thought of him making this mother wolf. "He says the blood wolf is his mother. When she comes, she'll love him and stay with him forever. that even though she's not his real mommy, they will be blood. Bloodwolf, mother forever." Those were the only words running through my head as Cord went to open the second drawer and pulled out another small carving. A golden wolf. Placing them side by side, she looked at me and grinned. "Alpha is the golden wolf. Tris says his mate will be the red wolf." I'm pretty sure my mouth was on the floor by now, but the knowing look in Cord's eyes had me feeling lightheaded. I needed to sit. "So, Dallas, what color is your wolf?" "Brown." I lied. I lied big time. But they couldn't know. Jackson had told me never to tell anyone I was a red wolf. I was never to show anyone either. He never said why, just that I needed not to do. "What? Are you sure? Because I'm positive you are Alpha's mate." This makes no sense. There was that word again. "Mate, why do you call your boyfriends and girlfriends mates? And by the way, Ryder is not my boyfriend. I meant what I said earlier, Cordy. I'm not sticking around here." She just gave me the are you kidding me look and was about to speak again when Tris started to cry. I looked over and he was staring at me with a look that broke my heart. "You're leaving me?" [ __ ] I didn't mean for him to hear that. Not right now. "Go back to sleep and we'll talk in the morning." "Will you sleep with me?" I looked down at his toddler bed and laughed. There was no way we would both fit in that. Hell, he barely fit in it. "You can sleep with me in your dad's room. His bed is big enough for us." I smiled, then thought about what I had just said. [ __ ] again, I made it sound like Ryder and I were sharing a bed. "Where will Daddy sleep?" "Well, when he said I could use his bed, I assumed he would take the couch," I said as I brushed his hair out of his face. He'd need a haircut soon. "Really? You're banning me to the couch now?" My head snapped up to see Ryder leaning against the door frame. His arms crossed over his chest, amusement in his eyes. I could see the twitch of his lips that told me he was fighting the smile that threatened to get out. "Naturally, I barely know you. Of course, you would be banned to the couch." I gave him my best innocent smile, though I wasn't sure how it looked. I hadn't been innocent in any manner for quite some years, so I didn't know if I was doing it right or not. I guess that I was since he chuckled and nodded. "Touché, yet you just met Tristan and he's allowed to sleep with you," he said, turning to look at Tris with a smug smile. "Do you think that's fair, buddy?" Tristan giggled and nodded. "Yes, she loves me more and I'm cuter than you, Daddy." My heart melted at his mention of love, and I couldn't help but laugh with him. "Wow, a pretty girl gives you a little attention, and you dropped me like a hot potato." Disappointment, hurt, and playfulness all laced his tone as he shook his head at Tristan. "I'll let it slide this once because she is rather gorgeous. Come on, I'll take the floor. You two can have the bed." With that, Tris jumped into my arms and squealled. I buried my head in his shoulder as I tried to hide the blush that crept onto my face at Writer's comment. This should be interesting, I thought. I had never had this kind of sleepover before. "Why don't you get your jammies on? I'll go fix the bed for us." I gave him another kiss as I slowly made my way across the hall. Cord's words were still playing in my head as I threw a few of the smaller throw pillows to the ground. Just as I reached to pull back the duvet, a large hand gripped the bedding on the opposite side and pulled it down. "I thought I'd come help you. There's tees and bottoms in the drawer." I looked at Ryder with a blank expression. I noticed you didn't have any sleepwear. You can borrow something of mine. You and Cordy can hit the shops tomorrow if you like. Pick up a few things for yourself. This wasn't Ryder or the alpha. This was the shy, intimidated boy whom I caught a glimpse of earlier. The one who I found irresistible. I just stood there looking at him, the pink tint of his cheeks, the way he took his bottom lip between his teeth as he nervously looked everywhere but me. I wasn't comfortable with the idea of wearing his clothes. But like Tristan, I couldn't tell him no. Not when he was like this. So, I just nodded and made my way to the walk-in. Stripping down, I took stock of his closet just as I realized he had mentioned his tees and bottoms were in the drawers in the dresser that was in the bedroom. Not in the closet. Just as I was about to pop my head out, the door opened. Doing my best, I reached for the dress shirt nearest me, trying to cover as much of me as I could. "Christ, care to knock next time?" "Oh, sorry," he said while turning his head and closing his eyes. "You didn't grab any clothes. I thought I'd bring you some." He was holding out a black V-neck with a pair of briefs. "Taking them quickly." I shoved him back out the door, muttering my thank you as I tried not to laugh at his expression. Once changed, I took a moment to breathe him in. His scent was strong, musky, but masculine. A hint of cedar and honey gave him an alluring sweetness. I could feel a deep sense of desire as all sorts of distracting visions flickered in my head. The curt thud of Ryder's knuckles on the door brought me back. Clearing my throat, I attempted to speak. "Come in." There stood Ryder with only his bottoms on, his tanned chest with the dusting of fine hair that emphasized the shape of his pecs leading down to the deep ridges of his abs. My breathing hitched as my fingers twitched, wanting to trace the lines of his abdomen. "If you keep looking at me like that, I'm not sure I can control myself. I'm trying very hard here, but you are testing me beyond my limits, Dallas." I inwardly sighed at the thought of his passionate kisses. The way my name sounded as it fell from his lips was enough to make me blush intensely. Next thing I knew, I was backed up against his trousers that were hanging. the fabric molding around us as he pulled me into a deep kiss. One hand on my lower back, pulling me closer as his other hand threaded into my hair. My body instantly responded to his as I tugged at his biceps, needing to be closer to him. The hand at my lower back is moving lower in a sickeningly familiar way. My body wanted him, but my mind screamed at me to stop this. This was just like him. He would use me, and when he was finished, he would toss me to the others like scraps. He would lock me away and only take me out when he was angry. An anger that would either come from painful acts or the harsh sting of his palm. Perhaps he would be like him and tire of that as well and take to using his fist, his belt, or other cruel tools. Fear set in as my breathing became labored and erratic. My body started to tremble as tears flooded my eyes. I wanted to scream to push him off and knock him around something fierce for having those damned memories come back. But in the end, I froze. Stepping back, he looked down at me with worry and concern, his thumb tracing small circles around my cheeks as he shushed me and whispered kind words. He never asked what had happened. He did his best to comfort me. It was a strange and foreign feeling to have someone comfort me. My heart flooded with guilt and sadness, but also with something else, something I had never felt before. "Daddy, move." Tristan's voice pulled me out from the darkness. And as his tiny arms wrapped around my waist, I felt a sort of peace. Needing more, I knelt and took him into my arms. As I carried him to bed, he continued where Ryder left off, whispering in my ear that it would be okay, that he would keep me safe and fight off anyone who tried to hurt me again. Settling in, Ryder pulled the duvet over Tris and me. Planting small kisses on our foreheads, he turned off the light and lay down on the floor. I wasn't sure how much time had passed before Tristan's breathing evened out, and I finally let myself drift off. Just before sleep took me, I felt Tris snuggle closer to me and kissed my cheek as he whispered, "Don't worry, Mommy. Daddy and I will keep you safe. We love you." Just before everything went black.
Ryder's POV. I woke up just as the sun was coming up. Thoughts of yesterday filled me as I shot up and looked at the bed. A smile spread across my face as I watched my mate and pup cuddled together, sleeping peacefully. She was a mystery to me, so guarded and pained, but strong and determined. My wolf was restless at the thought of last night. We had sensed her feelings so intensely that I nearly lost control. The need to claim her was becoming stronger and stronger. As an alpha, my wolf didn't want to waste time. He wanted his mate the moment he found her. Watching her find release was difficult. I wanted nothing more than to touch her, to help her. I had sensed her feelings from downstairs and rushed to see what had caused it. To my happy surprise, she was curled up in my bed, clinging to my pillow as small sounds left her. The moment her hand slid under the covers, I almost shifted. The need to make her mind was overwhelming. When she realized I was in the room with her, the horrified expression she wore tore me apart. She was my mate. She should never be embarrassed with me, especially if it was I she was thinking about. I couldn't help it. My wolf came to the front and took over. The sparks between us only fueled him as we claimed her mouth, her scent becoming stronger again. And just like that, her scent faded, just like last night. I could sense the fear in her, but I wasn't sure if it was from fear of me or something else. Thankfully, Tristan came in and she relaxed the instant his arms went around her. Jealousy hit me as my wolf growled at the thought of her responding more to him than to me. But it was replaced with adoration and hope. Adoration that she was already feeling love for our pup and hope that she would be soon caring for one of our own inside her. I just had to get past her walls. Not wanting to wake them, I tossed on a shirt and headed downstairs. For once, I had a reason to make breakfast. Tristan never liked a big meal. Just some honey o and juice. However, today was special and I knew he would appreciate pancakes and eggs as much as Dallas would. Just as I started the kettle. The sound of patting footsteps got my attention. Looking up to see a very tired-l lookinging Dallas walk in, pulling her hair into a messy bun on top of her head, she went straight for the fridge. "Good morning," I said as she grunted her response back to me. I watched closely as she pulled out the orange juice and without looking at me, opened it, and tipped it back, letting it flow into her mouth without it ever touching her lips. "You're going to be a bad influence on Tristan. I can see it already," I said, chuckling at her sleepy raised eyebrow. "Good thing he's still asleep, then," she said as she walked over to the breakfast bar and sat down on the stool directly in front of me. "Ta," she asked, eyeing the kettle longingly. She definitely isn't a morning person. I'd have to remember that. "Only just shouldn't be much longer," I said as I thoughtlessly walked around the bar and pulled her into my arms, leaving a small kiss on top of her head. I stilled the moment I realized what I had done, but relaxed the second her angelic giggle filled my ears. Going for a softer form of attack. "Are we?" I just shrugged and walked to the pantry. "Can I ask you something?" she whispered as I returned with my hands full. I looked at her and could tell she was trying to find the right words. So, I just nodded for her to continue when she was ready. Minutes passed until she finally took a deep breath and all but blurted out her question. "Tristan isn't yours."
"Izzy." I couldn't help but bust out in laughter. She looked so mortified that that had just come out of her mouth. The blush that lit up her face was lovely as her dough eyes widened. "I'm sorry. It's none of my business. I shouldn't have."
"It's fine, really. And no, Tristan is not my blood, but he is my son." She looked at me with an expectant look, obviously wanting more detail. My best mate and adopted brother, Eric, had found his uh girlfriend when we were 16, just after I took over the pack. They were so happy that he married her a year later. A few months after the wedding, he told me they were expecting their first pup, Tristan. They were so excited. I remember the day he was born. Half the pack stood in the waiting room, ready to meet him. He was the first pup born of the new alpha. I couldn't help but think it was a good sign that he would be the one to bring a new member into the pack just after I took over. I could feel the tears cloud my eyes as I thought about Eric. Adopted or not, he was my brother and I loved him as blood. I was devastated when he and Haley died. Haley was only 17. Tiny little thing really. We all hoped for the best. Even though the doctors said there was a chance she wouldn't be able to deliver properly, they said that if things got bad, they could always cut Tris out, which would be ideal, giving the best chance for both of them. Haley talked Eric into it a week before Tris came. They had scheduled the delivery, and everything was supposed to be fine. The doctor nicked an artery. They couldn't stop the bleeding after they got Tristan out. I felt her warm hand on my shoulder, gently squeezing it as her other hand cupped my face and looked into my eyes with such sorrow and sympathy. I felt it hard to breathe. He went a bit mad when she died. Tristan was only a month old when he left, less than a year when we found him. By the time we got to him to bring him home, it was too late. He'd ended his own life. I didn't realize I was crying until Dallas pulled me into her arms, running her hand up and down my back as she planted small kisses on my forehead. She didn't speak, but this was enough. Just having her here was enough to help calm me. "I'm fine. It's just been a while since I thought about them. When Eric left, I took Tris in, cared for him. After what happened, I was never able to let him go. My wolf bonded with him, and he became our own." I looked over her shoulder to see a small figure hiding in the shadows. Tristan.
Chapter 8. We sat there for a moment, stunned. Tristan was looking at us with sadness in his eyes. Unwrapping myself from Ryder, I got to my knees and opened my arms. It only took a second for Tris to run over, throwing himself into my arms as he buried his face in my neck. I heard the little whimpers coming from him, his sniffles, and felt the wetness spreading over my shirt. My heart was breaking in two as I listened to him cry. All I wanted was to ease his pain, to take it away, and keep him happy. Panic shot through me when I thought of the effects this would have on him hearing about his parents' deaths. Turning to look at Ryder, he seemed unsure of what to do. Opting for kneeling with us, he took us both into his arms. I did my best to ignore the tingles running through me as his nose skimmed the skin over my shoulder. I heard him taking deep breaths as he ran his hands over mine and Tristan's back. It was as if he was calming himself while trying to calm me and Tristan. "Don't be sad, buddy. They loved you very much, just like I do." I was surprised when Tris pulled back and looked at Ryder like he was crazy. It was the cutest thing I had ever seen. His little nose scrunched as one eyebrow shot up and his pink tongue slightly poking through his thin lips. "I'm not sad about that. You and mommy were sad. I felt it. I don't want you to be sad." Now it was my turn to look at Tris, who seemed mad. Did he call me mommy? [ __ ] he did. As much as I loved the feeling that came from it, I couldn't let him get too attached. I'd be leaving soon, leaving him unless I took him with me. I shot that idea down quickly. Being a rogue wasn't an easy life, and it wouldn't be fair to him. Also, he needed Ryder. He was the only father he had ever known. And no matter how selfish I was, I couldn't take that away from him. But could I really stay here? Could I change my life for this little boy? I knew the answer to that immediately. No, I couldn't. I wasn't the mother type. I wasn't meant to be happy or loved. Not with all the things I had done. Pack life and a family were not meant for me. No one could love a killer. They wouldn't accept me once they found out.
"Dallas." Ryder's worried voice rang in my head, yanking me out of my thoughts. I looked between him and Tris. It seems they had been trying to get my attention for a bit. "Yay. Uh, sorry. Um, I excuse me." I pulled out of their arms that were still holding me and shot up the stairs. I couldn't do this. I couldn't let Tristan get close to me. I wasn't good enough for him or for Ryder. Though I still had my doubts as to why he wanted me here. The best thing would be to leave now. Just skip out and move on. They'd be okay. They'd be better off without me. Making the decision quickly, I gathered all my things into my knapsack. I could use the window. It was only a short drop, maybe 20 ft. I've jumped from far worse. Without thinking about it, I quietly ran across the hall to Tristan's room. Looking at the dresser that still held the small carvings. I wanted something to remember him by, something that kept me close to him. Going back into Ryder's room, I changed. Wrapping the carvings into Ryder's shirt that I borrowed. He had dozens so he wouldn't miss this one. Stuffing them into my bag, I pulled out the small box that sat on top. My mother's white gold and onyx rosary. I had seen it my whole life sitting on his mantle. He told me it was one of the only items the hospital released after her death. It was to go to me. But instead, he kept it just out of reach, always in my view. After everything I'd been through. I didn't believe that night after night of praying did me any good. I would leave it for Tristan. Maybe it would be kinder to him than it ever was to me. I pulled out a small old paper from my sack and scribbled a little note for them before pulling open the window and jumping out. I knew it was about 200 m until I was at the border. Ryder's territory was one of the largest, and I knew I had only an hour tops to put as much distance between me and him before he sent someone out for me. He couldn't risk letting a rogue run free on his land. He would have to send a few warriors to take me down, or worse, bring me back. I'd been running for a good few hours, doing my best to block the sharp pain in my chest. Ryder and Tristan's faces were branded on my eyelid, so every time I blinked, I would see their faces. I covered much more ground than I thought I would have when I picked up a few cents along the way. One more familiar than the others. It was faint but still present. The others were stronger, but I figured it was from border runs, so I didn't pay much attention to it. Runners often take shifts, so of course there would be several scents out this way. I should have known better than to let my guard down. Even though they couldn't take me on in a fight, I knew it was foolish to ignore the scent of him and the others. That was my mistake. Just as I pushed myself harder, digging my claws into the damp ground, something slammed into my side, knocking me down until the painful thud of my skull connecting with a thick tree stump was felt and everything around me faded into nothingness.
Raiders POV. I'm going to go check on Dallas.
Okay, buddy. Go watch the telly and we'll be right down, I said as I gently pushed him towards the living room. I had a dull ache in my chest and was growing worried when she hadn't come back down. I knew she was a bit shocked by Tristan calling her mommy, but that was what she would be to him now. She was my mate, would be my wife and his mom, as well as mom to all my pups.
Walking up the stairs, I could feel a light breeze, the chill in the air getting thicker as I reached the top. I knew I had closed all the windows. Winter was coming quickly, and even though we ran warmer than humans, I didn't want Tristan getting cold at night. I listened closely for her as I got closer to my room. It was dead silent. Not even her heartbeat was heard as I stopped in front of the door. Dallas. I waited a moment before turning the knob and pushing it open. It was empty.
Going into Tris's room, I found nothing in there either. However, I did note that his wolf carvings were gone from his dresser. I remembered the look of awe she held when staring at them last night. Quickly running back into my room, I looked in the closet to see her stuff gone. She had packed up and left. A million thoughts and feelings ran through me as I tore through my closet, hoping I was wrong and maybe she just placed her things elsewhere. Making my way to my dresser, I stopped seeing the ball short was wearing last night on the ground by the bed. My wolf howled in pain and rage as he tried to process the fact that our mate had just left us. Bending down, I picked up the cloth and inhaled deeply, renewing and saving her scent to memory as I used the pack link to send for Devon. sitting on the edge of the bed trying to calm myself as I waited for him to arrive. I saw a small box with a tattered worn paper lying under it. As I read it quickly, my heart sank as my vision turned red.
"Tristan, I'm sorry I can't stay. Remember me and remember what I told you. Keep this close to you. Ryder, please let me go. I can't be what he needs or what you want. Trust me, it's better this way. Love D."
I opened the box to see a beautiful rosary. By the smell, I figured it was white gold, so letting him wear it wouldn't be an issue. As long as it didn't contain any silver, he would be fine. I looked around for something else. Anything else? Maybe she had left me something as well, but in the end, I found nothing.
"Alpha." Devon's voice ripped me from my thoughts of her. Looking over to him, I knew I couldn't do what she asked of me. I wouldn't let her go. She was my mate. Mom to Tristan and Luna to my pack. If she didn't like it, well then too bad. She didn't even give us a chance. I could feel her walls coming down in the short time she was here. All she needed was a few more days to see how it could be. And I would tell her about us, about the bond, and about pack life. Send out the runners, get a few of the fighters to go with them. I could feel my jaw clenched, grinding my teeth as I did my best not to shift and hunt her down myself.
"What are we looking for?" he asked as I threw the shorts at him, letting him inhale her scent. His head snapped up when he realized it was hers. She ran. I know he was apprehensive about her at first, but knowing she was my mate, he got over it quickly. It also helped that Cord had taken a liking to her. I could hear his concern through the pack link as he rounded up the runners, telling them to find her as soon as possible. She was not to be harmed. If she had one hair out of place, they would pay for it. He felt for his Luna. He wanted to protect her to keep her safe. I could feel the worry rolling through each of them as they took off after each not wanting their Luna out unprotected. So many things could happen to her and each of them was thinking of her safety like I was. My wolf would have been glowing with pride if it weren't for the fear and pain he was in from her leaving. It would take all I had to control him when she got back. He was screaming at me, clawing away at my mind as he reminded me of what I should have done right away, which would have been to mark her, something he planned to do the moment she was back.
I had been keeping Tristan busy for the last 2 hours, but he still didn't know she had left. I planned on getting her back, so I figured there was no reason to tell him. He would be so broken, blaming himself, and that was something I didn't want. I looked over to see him curled up with his blanket, asleep. We had been watching The Nightmare Before Christmas, and right after OogieOogie's song, he passed out. His soft snores filled the air as I got up from the couch, tucking the blanket tighter around him before I went and turned off the telly.
"Alpha, I have her. I'm almost back. Just a mile or so out." Relief ran through me at the sound of Johnson's voice in my head as I ran out the back door. "Is she okay? She wasn't hurt, was she?" He was quiet for too long. My wolf grew angry at his lack of response. "Tell me." I could hear his whimper before he answered me. "She hit her head. I think I found her on the ground near a tree. She was bleeding, shifting."
I ran out to meet them, ready to unleash my fury on him if he had anything to do with her getting hurt. He may have been one of the most loyal in the pack, but Dallas did try to attack his sister last night. Not to mention, he was very much aware of my intentions for Jasmine. She had hurt my son, disrespected my mate and her Luna, and thought she would get away with it. I might not kill her, but I was giving her a fate worse than that. I was going to abjure her.
Chapter nine. I woke up to a pounding headache and a bright light dancing around behind my eyelids. Cautiously, I opened them only to close them up immediately. Who has lights this bright? I thought to myself as I tried to lift my hand to shield my eyes. My body felt heavy, my movements slow and dragging. It seemed to take forever before I was able to get my hand over my eyes. By the time I did, all thoughts about getting up were lost. I only wanted to drift back into a comfortable sleep. Then everything hit me. All the events of this morning. Yesterday, I wasn't sure how long, but I knew the soft, lush bed I was on wasn't right. I should have been on the cold, hard ground underneath the massive tree I fell into. Well, more like shoved into. I remember the lingering scent of Johnson as I ran through the woods and then out of nowhere, the hard body that slammed into mine, causing me to go head first into that damned tree, shooting up from the bed, I wobbled a little as the room spun. The sickening smell of cleaner and steel filled my nose as I did my best to look around as my eyes adjusted to the light. The bright white room held three beds and two chairs that lined the wall near the door. Clearly, this wasn't a hospital given its lack of necessary medical equipment. But it did remind me of an infirmary, one that I had once seen on a display telly while walking past a small electronic shop. If that was the case, then I wasn't lucky enough to make it off Ryder's territory. Someone had caught me and brought me back.
[ __ ] Sought it all to hell. I guess I didn't put as much distance between us as I had thought. Just as I was trying to steady myself enough to creep to the door, it opened and in walked the little git whose scent had thrown off my concentration in the woods.
"Oh, you're up. How are you feeling?" He looked me over with concern, lacing his eyes, his tone soft and gentle as if he actually cared about me. "Funny," I thought. Wasn't he the one encouraging Devon to take me out back and show me a lesson not more than a few days ago? His previous endearments ran across my mind as I stared at him.
"Don't worry, this little thing can handle a little bump to her head." I sneered as he stopped mid-stride, hanging his head in shame. He shuffled from one foot to the other as he let out a heavy sigh. "I'm sorry about that. I just I I've never met a rogue that didn't mean to hurt me or the people I love. I'm sorry I judged you unfairly." The sincerity in his voice tugged at my heart as he looked at me with grief-rimmed eyes. The feeling of worthlessness and dishonor washed over me as tears threatened to well. I felt like I had done a great wrong that would follow me around forever. No matter what, I would always feel like this. What was wrong with me? I hadn't done anything. Okay, scratch that. I did leave Tristan and Ryder, but that was for their own good. I'll only end up hurting them. I was the monster that Johnson had feared. I was the rogue who would hurt him and all those he loved.
Warm arms wrapped around me as small sniffles filled the air, tensing, I pushed back, flinging him into the nearby concrete wall. A loud oo omf sounded before he slumped down to the ground.
[ __ ] "I'm sorry. I'm not used to people touching me," I said as I ran over to check him out. Relief flooded me along with amusement and wonder. What was going on with my emotions? It was like I had two sets of emotions playing out inside me and my body couldn't tell them apart.
"It's fine. Just knocked the breath out of me, that's all. I'm good," he muttered and winced as he righted himself. I gripped his arm to help steady him as happiness bloomed through me. I was going mad. That had to be it. I needed to check myself into the looney ward.
"What are you confused about?" he softly asked as we moved towards one of the beds. I gently sat him down as I stood there wondering if I should tell him or not. Something played in the back of my mind, and I felt at ease with him, confident that I could trust him. It was almost a need to trust him. Yep, definitely going mad. I sighed and looked at him. He just stared at me with a patient expression as he waited for me to speak again. "I have I feel weird." Shaking my head, I went to give it another go. "I keep getting these different spurts of emotion. I'll feel one way and it makes sense. Then the next moment I'll feel something completely different. I think I've lost it." I groaned at the end. Not because I was sharing with him, which was rather odd in itself, but because I felt an abundant range of conflicting emotions. I was wary, I told him, but elated at the same time. Confused, but reassured, annoyed, but relaxed. At one point, I felt like I wanted to put my head through a wall just to stop the pain.
"Um, Dallas, that might be my fault." Johnson stuttered as he looked down at his fidgety hands, raising an eyebrow, which he couldn't see. I motioned for him to go on. Finally, I had to speak to get him to continue. "And why is that?" My annoyed tone seemed to get his attention. "I [clears throat] think we should go see Ryder first. He's calmed down now and thinks we should come see him."
"He's calmed down. Was he angry?" The moment I thought this, I wanted to slap myself. Of course, he was angry. I had run off after he told me I wasn't able to leave yet, and his son called me mommy. Yeah, pissed. Wouldn't even cover it. "I'm not sure that's such a grand idea. I uh I don't want to see him right now." I couldn't think of what to say. So, sticking with the truth never hurt.
"Right. Harong." Before Johnson could utter a word, the door busted open. And there stood Ryder, chest heaving up and down as he glared at me. "What do you mean you don't want to see me?" Oh [ __ ] Bloody hell. Christ almighty. He'd heard me. Pain, hurt, rage, and shock all played on his features as he strode towards me. I felt fear. Real fear. For the first time in a long time, all I [clears throat] wanted to do was duck down, crawl under the bed, curl up in a ball, and stay there forever. His eyes were pitch black as his gaze bore into me. I think I may have even flinched. After years of indifference, I suddenly felt a deep fear that I had gone too far, and this was it for me. But no matter what, I wasn't going to back down. If he wanted a fight, I'd give him one. I just had to wait for him to strike first. Moving my right leg behind me, I shifted my weight and brought my hands up to my face, blocking it. This stopped him in his tracks. He studied me for a second or two before I saw the little light bulb go off on top of his head. Metaphorically speaking, "You want to fight me?" he asked me incredulously. I wanted to laugh at the idiotic notion. Of course, I didn't want to fight him. I didn't have a death wish, contrary to popular belief. "I'm not fighting you. I'm defending myself. There is a difference, Alpha Daniels." Throwing formalities back into the mix couldn't be a bad thing. I was trying to show respect, so why did he look like I just slapped him into next week? He stumbled back a bit just as Johnson ran over and jumped in front of me, taking a protective stance. I was confused. If I couldn't beat the alpha, what the hell kind of chance did he think he had? Just as Ryder noticed, he nodded and went to stand by the end of the bed.
"I would never hurt you, Dallas. I would never raise my hand to a woman, especially not out of anger. I'm sorry you thought that I would," Ryder spoke with a soft, calm, pain-filled voice. Guilt ran through me, as well as relief, though I had no idea where the relief came from. I was still a bit frightened and worried. What did I have to be relieved about?
"They're not your emotions you're feeling. Sit down. There are a few things we need to talk about." Ryder's voice seemed strained, though he looked calm. I could tell he was anything but. So, I nodded and went to take a seat on the bed, not right in front of Ryder, but close enough to show him I was trying. When Johnson pulled my arm and sat down between us, I looked at him curiously as Ryder let out a low growl.
"She's scared and unsure. I don't want to add to her stress," Johnson said as if he were commenting on the weather. "I just looked between the two, doing my best not to backhand Johnson for that." "Sure, it was true, but I didn't think I was giving anything away. I looked to be holding my own, or so I thought. Obviously not if he was able to tell." Ryder's now soft eyes flowed over me, taking me in, he turned to Johnson and nodded before returning his gaze to me. Caught in his stare, I almost didn't hear Johnson when he spoke. Almost.
"As Ryder's mate and the pack's future Luna, you can't run off like that." I snapped out of my little trance to gawk at him, but he just continued like he couldn't see me looking at him like he had just grown two heads. "As your new guardian, we're bonded, kind of like you and Tristan are. and that means it is my feelings you are feeling." My jaw was nicely planted on the clean shiny linoleum as my breathing seemed to stop. I could see black specks litter the corner of my vision just before Ryder pushed Johnson out of the way only to crash his lips to mine.
Chapter 10. "That's enough. No more talking." Ryder was now yelling at Johnson. The moment his lips touched mine, I gasped, taking in a much-needed breath before the darkness had a chance to take me. After regaining my normal vision and the slight wheeze I had was gone, Ryder turned to Johnson and shot death glares at him. "You realize that is all too much for her, for anyone to take in. Just sit there and keep your mouth shut until I tell you otherwise." The alpha tone lacking in his words, but the menace behind them was enough to have Johnson sit down hesitantly and effectively shut his mouth. I would have laughed at Johnson's expression had it not been for the reminder that I was so lost in this conversation.
"Stop yelling at him and tell me what's going on," I demanded as I watched both of them suddenly become squirmish, looking to each other for a few moments before Ryder took my hand and led me to the bed, gently pushing me back to sit at the edge before he came to sit on the left side of me. "Dallas, you are my mate," Ryder said after a deep breath. The expectant look on his face telling me I should somehow be aware of this already. Thinking about it, I still didn't understand why everyone here referred to their partner as their mate. Why not just call them what they are? Your boyfriend, girlfriend, husband, wife. I didn't get it.
"We are not mates," I said, looking down at my hands. He wanted to be my friend, and I didn't know how to be anyone's friend. Hell, even with Jackson, our relationship consisted of him trying to help me and me being the world's biggest handful to him. But he kept coming back for more. Pain filled my chest as I peered up to Ryder. Hurt, fear, and sorrow all clouded his eyes as he looked down at me. I didn't know what to say to make him feel better, and that was bothering me. I wanted to make him feel better. I wanted to see his smile, make him laugh, and ensure he was happy. I had no idea where the feelings came from. But the longer I was around him, the stronger the need I felt to make him happy.
"What do you think he means when he says mate?" Johnson spoke up, cocking his head to the side as he interrupted my thoughts. I was grateful. "Friends, I don't really know. Cord calls Devon her mate, so I thought maybe she meant her boyfriend," I said, talking to no one really. I was actually speaking more to myself as I tried to work through this all out loud. But then she called Ryder my mate and well, he's not either." I made the mistake of looking at him again and instantly regretted it. His pained expression tugged at my heart as I reached for his hand, liking the tingles that came along with it. "I mean, maybe you could be. I'm not used to having anyone, so friends isn't really a concept I'm familiar with. I honestly don't know how to be someone's friend." Oh my goodness. Where did that come from? I'm sitting here like a sap just spilling my guts. I actually sounded like I cared, which I did, but I've never had so much emotion behind simple words before. Relief washed over me twice as I continued to gaze at Ryder. His sultry features took on an understanding and an ecstatic look just before he leaned down a bit and touched his soft lips against my forehead, pulling back with a wide grin on his face. I wasn't sure how long he and I just sat there looking at each other. But after a while, I could feel an awkward tension and a tad of jealousy. Soon, the seemingly comfortable silence Ryder and I were sharing turned into something that had my skin tingling, but not in its normal way when around him. Ryder must have seen it in my eyes as he turned to Johnson and let out a bit of a growl.
"Leave. I want to explain this to her alone. I'll call for you later." I was beyond confused and actually a bit worried when Johnson just looked at him and shook his head. The familiar look of mental conversation came over both of them. Small head nods, expressive features, but no words. The only sign of understanding was in their eyes. Soon, I found myself irritated. "Well, if there is no need for me to be here anymore, I'd like to leave," I spat. First, they say they'll explain things, then leave me confused, then completely ignore me. What was wrong with them? Did they just like making me feel like an idiot?
"No, no more leaving. But you will need to tell him to wait until later to speak to him about your bond." Ryder's voice was soft, panicked, but it was the anger that caught and held my attention. "Why are you mad? And why do I have to tell him?" His long, deep sigh blew a stream of hot, minty breath over my face as my eyes closed on their own accord, and I inhaled deeply. The longing for his closeness filled me. My fingers twitched as I thought of running them through his short hair and along his back.
"As your guardian, your command is the only one that matters to him. and his wolf. To him, 'You are both Alpha and Luna.'" I hadn't missed that he skipped over my first question. Yet, [clears throat] I couldn't find it in me to think about that. Alpha and Luna were the only thoughts in my mind as I looked at Johnson, who had a smug smile on his face. It shouldn't have pleased me, but it did. All worry about being so much to someone left me as love and loyalty shot through me. The distinct feeling of pride accompanied the warming sensation as I took him in. "Is that you?" I hesitantly asked. The feelings flowing through me were overwhelming, and I couldn't separate whose was whose. His light chuckling filled my ears as he stood and walked over to me, ignoring the throaty growl coming from Ryder. "Not all of them," he said as he knelt in front of me, taking one of my hands and his as he shot Ryder a look when he made a move to pull me away from him. "Thank you, Luna, for accepting me." Complete happiness ran over me as he stared at me with so many emotions. Before I had time to think, I was squeezing his hand and leaning down to plant a small kiss on his forehead. Feeling right or tense beside me, I pulled back, giving him a small smile as I turned back to Johnson.
"Give us some time, please. I'll find you when we're done." Nodding, he got to his feet and walked towards the door, turning just as he was about to step out. "Just think about me and I'll be able to hear you. I'll be able to find you and we can talk." I didn't know what to say to that, so I just nodded and watched his back as he walked down the long hall. His figure disappeared when he rounded the corner.
"Come. I want you to be comfortable when we talk," Ryder said as he stood up, pulling me with him. The gruff stiffness in his voice concerned me as I followed behind him. As I took in the building's surroundings, I was surprised when he pushed open a door that led to a long stairwell rather than one that would take me outside. Once we got about halfway up, I was able to smell the familiar scent of the pack house. The noise from the ventilation and cooling system was overpowering, blocking out any sound I could hear just before we stopped at a large steel door. Noting the lack of a handle, I was about to ask Ryder how we were supposed to get out when he turned to the small keypad on his left and pushed in a few numbers, automatically opening the door. Stunned, I stared in wonder for a moment before Ryder's front was firmly pressed to my back, and the vibrating of his chest from his silent chuckle sent shivers down my spine.
"We use down below for many reasons, mainly for the pack infirmary, but from time to time we do keep prisoners down there. The keypad is a way to ensure they don't get free." Dread filled me as I thought of rogues being locked down there. If they found a way to escape, they would kill the entire pack without a second thought. They would torture the women and children while they made the males watch helplessly. Nausea filled me, and I found it hard to breathe as I tried my best to clear my head.
"Ryder, you shouldn't keep prisoners so close to the pack. What if they found a way out and hurt someone? Hurt all of them?" Protectiveness and sympathy washed over me as I stood there looking at him, finally registering my thoughts. I was shocked to find I actually cared what happened to Ryder's pack. I wanted them safe and protected and was ready to kill anyone who threatened to harm any of them. Ryder must have sensed my stunned stare as he gave me a warm smile before he winked and gripped my waist, throwing me over his shoulder as my face was met with his backside. The shriek that left my lips only encouraged him further as he laughed and gave me a playful pat. His deep, throaty chuckle sent shivers down my spine as I tensed. What had gotten into him, but more importantly, what had gotten into me? I was absolutely loving this little exchange. His firm hands around my thighs as he held me in place. His scent filling my nose as my hands wrapped around his waist for support. The view of him shifting with every step he took, and the way I could feel his hot breath through my jeans as he walked up the stairs. The tingles turned into a warmth as his free hand came up to steady my thigh. His warm fingers brushed my leg lightly before his touch was completely removed as he reached for the doorknob of his room. With a smug smirk, I unwrapped my arms from his waist and planted them firmly on his hips, digging my fingers in as I used them to hold myself up and turned slightly to look back at him. His wide eyes and frozen stature amused me as I quickly patted his hip. "You can put me down now, caveman." I gave him a small smile as he lowered me, making sure my body slid down his. I tried to ignore the intense closeness as my knee, hips, and stomach brushed against him.
"You shouldn't tease me, mate. I'm having a hard enough time controlling myself as it is." The dead pan look on his face only made my heart beat faster as the wicked glint in his eyes had me feeling flustered. "Go sit down on the bed." Doing as he said, I nearly ran to the bed. My eagerness taking over eagerness to have him in bed with me, to be close to him. As if sensing my feelings, he turned and groaned, looking at me like I was his prey for a moment before he shook off all his thoughts and sat at the end of the bed. "We can't get distracted right now, Dallas. So, please stop looking at me like that." His voice was quiet and pleading as he ran his hands over his face and through his hair.
"You need to know what being my mate entails. And if and when you are ready, I will gladly be with you." Be with me, I thought. His words were sweet and gentle. Something I suddenly wanted very much. I wanted to know what that kind of closeness felt like. The need is almost becoming unbearable. "Okay, explain it to me," I said after a brief moment to get my thoughts in order.
"You are my soulmate, Dallas. The goddess created you just for me as she created me just for you. I will love you, worship you if you let me. I will protect you and our family. And I will never let you go. You will always feel a connection with me that you will never feel with another. You can feel it now, but after we are mated and marked, you will feel it so much more."
"Mated and marked?" I interrupted him, not meaning to, but the words flashed through my mind. And before I could stop them, the words slipped out of my mouth, giving me a curious look, he finally spoke again. "I will bite you just there," he said as he pointed to my neck where the curve met my shoulder. "Where my mark will stay forever, just as you will bite me and leave your mark. Mates normally mark one another during a moment of ultimate closeness. During that moment, you will feel the urge to bite me as I will feel the same. You will be mine as I will be yours. The connection between us never breaking, even in death. Most who lose their mate follow shortly after. The pain of losing their other half too unbearable. That is what you are to me, Dallas. You are my other half. We each carry half of each other's souls. And when we mark each other, our souls will bond together, mending our two halves into one in each of us. I will be everything you want and need. Like you will be for me, you will be mine. The reason you are feeling the way you are about the pack is because you are their future Luna. Once you are marked, you will become their mother and help me lead and care for them. In turn, they will love and care for you."
Part of me wanted to jump up and scream for him, to mark me, to mate and make me his, to let him in and allow him to love me. But another, more resistant part of me was yelling at me to run and never look back. He wanted my freedom. He wanted me to be his and only his. I would be stuck here. I would be his possession. Feeling like my mind was being stretched in two. I felt a light mental slap as my thoughts of his kisses, his touches, and his love all filled me. I would be his equal, not his possession. I would be his everything, just like he would be mine. But was that what I really wanted? I liked not having to care for others, not having to look out for anyone but myself? Could I even love him the way he said? Was I capable of letting go of all my rage long enough to let him in? What about Tristan? Was I able to be what he needed? Able to play mummy to him and the pack? All these thoughts filled my head as my head felt like it would soon explode. Two conflicting halves of me are battling to make me see sense. I was torn between what I knew and what could be. Everything is becoming too much too quickly. It wasn't until I felt a pair of soft, full lips touch my cheek and a small, warm hand touch my leg that everything in my head quieted and I was able to breathe. Looking up to see Ryder looking at me with concern before turning my head down to find Tristan rubbing my leg with worry slashed across his innocent sweet face. Before I could let the guilt and sorrow take over me at their troubled faces, Ryder took my hand and pulled me onto the bed, letting my head connect with the plush pillow as he pulled Tristan on as well and laid him on my other side so that I was sandwiched between the two.
"Sleep on it." That was all he said as he turned me to my side and pulled me into his chest, fitting there perfectly as Tristan snuggled up to me, wrapping his tiny arm around my neck. I couldn't help but think how right and perfect this moment felt as I let my eyes close and inhale the wonderful mixed scent of Ryder and Tristan.
Chapter [clears throat] 11. I woke up to a small hand running through my hair that was lying just over my shoulder. Tiny fingers twirling the tangled strand round, taking in the coldness that was at my back, telling me that Ryder was no longer in bed with us. I was disappointed that he wasn't there. But once I heard the shower running, I knew he wasn't far. However, another kind of disappointment ran through me at the thought, pushing those thoughts to the back of my mind. I focused on Tristan's fingers playing with my hair. I tried to keep my breathing even so as not to disturb him. I loved the feeling of his affection as he took a deep breath and whispered to me, "I'm sorry I called you mommy. I won't do it again if it makes you mad." Tears pricked my eyes as I thought about my poor baby hurting because of my actions. My baby? I was shocked at the extreme warmth and happiness that ran through me at that thought. He could be mine if I stayed and accepted everything that Ryder had offered last night. Was I ready for all of that? I knew with Tristan I would do anything he asked. Try my hardest to be what he needed. But would it be enough? Would I be enough for him? Not wanting to think too much on it. And definitely not wanting to leave Tris in the state he was currently in, I pulled him close to me. I cuddled him to my chest as I ran my hands up and down his back.
"Shh. I wasn't mad, baby. I was scared." "Scared of what? Who scared you? Daddy and me will fix them." The demanding tone in his voice made me want to awe. He asked as if someone had hurt or frightened me, and all he wanted was to tell them off for it. He tried to protect me and fix anyone who threatened me the same way I would fix anyone who dared even to make him frown. "No, not like that. I was scared that I would hurt you. I want to be that for you, but I don't know how." Stopping as I looked down at his sympathetic face for a moment, leading me to believe he actually understood what I was saying. I had forgotten his little bundle of love and joy was only four.
"He does understand, Luna, don't you, buddy?" Snapping my head up to the door to find Johnson leaning against the frame, arms crossed over his chest as he watched us. It should have freaked me out a bit, but honestly, it only filled me with a sense of security.
"Yep," Tristan replied, popping the 'p' at the end as his grin threatened to take over his whole face. I laughed and ruffled his hair, memorizing the softness of it. "Will you stay and be my mommy? You'll be perfect. I know it." His excitement and hopeful eyes bore into mine. And before I could answer, the opposite door opened, and there stood a fresh Ryder clad in a pair of dark tracky pants and a tight white V-neck tee. His bare feet padding over the plush carpet. God, what is this man doing to me? Noticing his feet, I wanted to slap myself, but that would be really awkward and warrant an explanation that I really didn't want to give.
"Come, Tris. Let's go make breakfast." Ryder said as he walked around the bed to help him up, lifting him and gently setting him on his feet before letting him go. Tris ran to the door, stopped, and turned. Bringing his hand up to his mouth, he blew me a kiss. Giggling, I caught it and pressed it to my heart as I puckered my lips and sent him one in return. Ryder's face lit up with mine and Tristan's small exchange. He leaned down and left a sweet kiss on my lips. "Stay here. We'll bring breakfast up for you." Nodding, I pecked his lips once more, turning a ruby shade as I realized what I had just done. His shoulders shook with his silent chuckle as he turned and walked out the door with Tristan. I hadn't missed the glares and raised brow he sent Johnson as he closed the door behind him.
"Give him a chance, Luna. Give us all a chance," he said as he walked over to the bed and sat at the edge. His plea was soft but heavy with emotion as he looked at me. "I know you're worried, but he would never judge you for your past. You had reason behind your actions. You only protected yourself, Luna." I stared at him, wide-eyed, mouth hanging open. "How did you know?" I stammered out, fear and panic covering me head to toe. If he knew and told Ryder, I wouldn't get a chance to stay. Not after what I had done.
"No, Luna, you're wrong. Ryder would be angry, yes, but not at you. He would be pissed that he couldn't take out that wretch himself. Stop feeling and thinking he won't accept you. Believe me, there is nothing you could do that would ever get him to reject you."
"But how did you know?" I whisper yelled, still frightened that someone would hear me.
"We are bonded. I can feel your emotions and at times I can hear your thoughts. Once we complete the bond, you will be able to listen to mine loud and clear whenever you want, just as I will be able to hear yours. For the most part, you will learn to block me out so I won't know what you're thinking all the time. It's [clears throat] a way to keep you safe. If anyone were ever to try to harm you, you can call me and I will always know exactly where you are. You'll be mated to Ryder and he'll be able to hear you as well. Well, we all will. The pack link will be open to you if you choose to stay. But with a guardian, it's a bit different. I will be the one to protect you. Any danger that means to come near you will have to go through me. It's like I'll be your personal round-the-clock bodyguard. That is also how I knew what happened. I didn't mean to. Please believe me, Luna. But last night, you started to project your dreams to me. I saw you as a little girl. what he did to you. I couldn't let you go through that again. So, I did something. I took your dream from you, made it my own, and blocked you out. I couldn't stand knowing you were hurting in such a way. I will take them all from you. Every night for forever as long as I know you will never have to deal with that again. I don't want you to remember, but I know you can't forget. This way, I can help by taking some of the pain." He moved closer, grabbing my hand as tears flooded my eyes. Finally, another person knew whether I wanted him to or not. He did. The best part was that he didn't judge me. He still had that aura of love and protection around him that I was grateful for at the moment. If he could know what happened and still look at me like that without any type of hate, fear, or disgust, then maybe Ryder could, too. Maybe then I could be normal. I could love him, stay, and live the life I always thought I never wanted. A life I thought I never deserved.
"How are we bonded, and how do we finish it?" I asked after taking some time to think things over. Those two questions were still bugging me. Would it be like Ryder and me? With Ryder, we had to mate. Did Johnson and I have to do the same? God, I really hope not. I can only think about the possibility of that kind of closeness with one man without losing my head. Two would probably make my brain explode.
Johnson's slightly deep laughter pulled me from my cringing mental image. "No, Luna. Nothing like that. Trust me, I would never look at you in that light. You are beautiful, of course, but you are my Luna, my mother, so to speak." Letting out a relieved sigh, I nodded, smiling at him.
"But for Ryder's sake, please make your decision quickly. His wolf knows I would never touch you in such a manner. But that doesn't mean he still won't try to hurt me when I do touch you. He's only going to get more protective and possessive the longer you leave him waiting. He won't mean to be. It's just the way wolves are." He quickly added the last bit when he saw what his words of possessiveness did to me. The last thing I ever wanted was someone else making me their possession. Then one of his other words struck me. "Why don't I have a wolf?" He looked at me and shrugged. I could tell that the question puzzled him as well, but he didn't want to dwell on it since he didn't know the answer.
"I don't know. But back to your other question. I was running along looking for you like Ryder wanted. Once I caught your smell, I followed you. I had just come up on you when you dug your paws into the ground and pushed off like a speeding bullet. As a runner, I should have been able to keep up with you, but I couldn't." He mumbled, hanging his head in shame. I grabbed his hand and mine, giving him a reassuring smile.
"I heard you whimper. And when you finally came back into my sight, I saw you lying by the tree, bleeding heavily. You were bleeding too fast and hard to heal properly. I didn't know what to do, so I cleaned your wound. It started the healing, but you had lost so much blood. I didn't think you were going to make it if I didn't try, so I gave you some of mine," he said shyly as he pulled his long sleeve back to show me the raised marks of my name printed in white just above his wrist. I gasped. It looked like a tattoo, kind of, but more like a brand. The swirl of my name was beautiful and looked like it belonged there on his skin. "This is what a mark looks like. When you and Ryder mark each other, this will be what happens. I have your mark 'cause I cut my wrist and let you drink from it. But then you got greedy and bit me to get more." His eyes lit with humor. But I could tell he was actually serious.
"But how? I mean, we aren't vamps. Blood shouldn't do that for us."
"No, we're not. But when it comes to the pack, the link is so strong. Because I had already accepted you as my Luna after what Jasmine did. I wanted no ties to her. I received you as a pack and my Luna because you loved Tristan without question. I saw the way you looked at him and I knew you were going to be good for the pack. I knew it most likely would bond us as guardian and Luna, but I couldn't let you die. If you don't want me as your guardian, I understand. I'm not a fighter or anything. You can bond with anyone in the pack who accepts you and who you accept," he said so calmly, but I could feel his emotion. He was actually afraid I was going to say no. I was so awed by him and his willingness to do that for me. I couldn't help but accept him.
"You know you're going to have to learn to fight, right? I'll teach you," I said with a smile. Just as the door opened and in drifted the most amazing smell ever. Ryder, Tristan, and Strawberry French Toast.
Chapter 12. The last 6 days have been a blur. All the pack knew I was Ryder's mate. A little incident at the park with Tristan had ensured that everyone in Ryder's pack and even some of the neighboring packs had heard he found his mate. I didn't blame Tristan at all. He was just sticking up for me when one of the older kids walked up and started talking down to him. I let him go to the toilets alone. Obviously, I couldn't just walk in with him. I [clears throat] stood just outside the main door. A group of kids twice his age walked in. They seemed friendly enough, even smiled at me when they walked past. I didn't feel like they were a threat, so I let them go in. I wasn't about to stop a couple of 8-year-olds from taking a wee if they needed to. That was until I heard Tristan shouting at them.
"Don't say that about my mommy." At that moment, I really didn't care about the looks I would get for running into the boy's facilities. I had learned that Tristan rarely shouted about anything. He cared too much for his pack to yell at them unless he needed to, busting through the door. I was beyond surprised to find Tris on top of a boy who was nearly three times his size. His little fist pulled back and before I could reach him, it came down to connect with the child's nose. The deafening sounds of painful screams followed the cracking sound that reverberated throughout the small room. Freezing, I watched Tristan hit the boy again, yelling at him to keep his mouth shut and
To respect his mom and their Luna. The title given to me for being Ryder's mate. Not a title I particularly wanted, but one that seemed I couldn't get out of.
Just as his growls got louder, I finally snapped out of it and rushed over to pull him off. As soon as my arms went around his tiny waist, he stopped and nearly went limp. He didn't struggle or continue to fight. I had asked him about that later on on our way back to the pack house and he had simply said, "I didn't want to hurt you, Mommy. I knew it was you and I didn't want to hit you." I knew I should have been angry or upset that he was fighting, but from what he told me, that little kid had it coming. He's just lucky I don't hit children.
"Daddy," he said. He said he paused when telling his side of the story. I hadn't expected Ryder to know about it so soon. But just as we walked in, he was rushing towards us with a somber look on his face, all but pulling us both into his office where the kid and his parents sat looking quite smug. Well, the mother was visibly upset and the father had his poker face on.
He said, "What?" I could tell Ryder was doing his best to keep his temper under control, but the calmness in him was slipping. I might not have liked the child, but I didn't want Tristan to see his father react angrily in front of him. Ryder, don't make him repeat it. I took his arm and pulled him to the corner. I knew the others could still hear us, but I didn't want my innocent and sweet Tris saying such words. Sure, I cussed sometimes, but that didn't mean I wanted Tristan picking up that bad habit of mine.
He said I was nothing more than a filthy rogue who wasn't even worth calling a name. Ryder tensed. And if it weren't for my grip on his arm, I wasn't sure what he would have done. Thankfully, he didn't have to do anything.
"You disrespected your Luna in such a way?" The boy's father screamed as he got to his feet, raising his hand. I knew he was going to strike the kid. Not thinking, I ran towards him and took hold of his wrist just before his hand made contact with the side of the boy's face. "You will not hit him. Discipline him. Yes, but you are not to lay a hand on him. Understood?" I wasn't sure what had come over me, but I just couldn't stomach letting this man hurt his son in front of me. It may have been wrong to interfere, especially after what he had said about me, but he was young and stupid. Hell, this wasn't even the worst thing he would do. Just wait until he gets older.
"Luna, I'm so sorry. I wasn't thinking. Of course, I won't hit him. I don't know what came over me, but he will learn to respect you. I will not stand for this." He seemed sincere, as if his son's actions genuinely took him back, almost ashamed by them. Kenneth, his wife, finally spoke by the dagger she had been shooting at me that whole time. I figured she had not shared his view on the situation. It actually pained me to see the struggle in his eyes as he fought himself over siding with his mate or his Luna.
"Suzanne, he needs to learn. So do you. I have pledged my loyalty to my alpha and to his mate, the same as you, I might add." In that moment, I wanted to scold that woman. I could feel the pain he was in at having to do that to her, but she really left him no choice. I shook my head. I would have a little talk with her later on in private. "I trust you will find a suitable punishment for him, just as I will find one for Tristan. He should not have turned to violence to solve this problem." I was a bit taken aback that Ryder would do that, but I knew he had to. He was right. Tristan would be the alpha one day if I didn't have any children with Ryder, which at the moment was nowhere on my list of things to do. I still hadn't given him an answer about whether I was staying or not.
After that, apparently Suzanne just couldn't keep her mouth shut. By tea, the pack house was buzzing with whispers. Not that most of the fighters and runners didn't know I was Ryder's mate, but the general population was to be left out of the loop until I had made my final decision. And with the way things were going, it looked like I was the newest member of RERS's pack. That was the only real negative incident that had happened. Most seemed to welcome me and many were happy to have me there. It was completely different than what I had expected. I thought they would turn me out, ignore me, shun me for being a rogue, but it was the exact opposite. The more I got to know them, the more I found my reasons to leave lacking and unnecessary. They just seemed to spark a warmth in me that I was quickly becoming addicted to. I loved their kindness, their ease with me, and most of all, I loved that they all opened their arms as well as their hearts for someone they didn't know. Was this normal pack life? Was this what I had missed out on all those years?
"What are you thinking about so hard, Luna?" Johnson spoke, breaking me from my thoughts. I had forgotten where I was for a second, but the familiar glow and smell of the pack greenhouse reminded me where I was, and better yet, what I was doing in here, which was hiding. I needed some time to breathe and think on my own. Just thinking over the last few days.
"Stop calling me Luna. I know why the others do it, but I would prefer you call me Dallas since no one else will." I gave an exasperated sigh. I didn't mind it so much that the pack called me that, but I really didn't like it when Johnson and the other fighters and runners did it. Most times I wouldn't even acknowledge them since I wasn't used to it. They'd have to call me a few times before I realized they were talking to me.
"I do it out of respect. I know it bothers you, but you'll get used to it if you stay." He mean, he gave me an expectant look. I knew he'd been dying to see if we would stay or not. With this whole guardian mess, he was obligated to follow me if I decided not to stick around. I didn't like the idea of him coming along, but he refused to give in and stay if I didn't.
"I think we both know what I'm going to do." I gave him a knowing smile as he beamed at me.
"When will you tell them? You know what will happen when you do?" Sighing again, I nodded. I wasn't sure when I would tell Ryder, but I knew it had to be soon. It wasn't fair to him for me to keep him waiting. I could see the toll it was taking on him being unsure and I didn't want to drag that out much longer soon. I just need to find the right time. He and I don't get a ton of alone time. He's been busy this week and it's hard to let Tristan go. Speaking of, why are you not with him? I thought I asked you to keep an eye on him while he's in his lessons." I crossed my arms over my chest while raising an eyebrow. I could take care of myself if I needed to, but my little man couldn't if something big happened. I had specifically told Johnson he was to stay with him when he was not with me. It went against his guardian instincts, but he understood why I wanted him with Tris.
"It's nap time, Luna. I thought I would come and check on you while he rested." He shrugged like it was no big deal. I guess it really wasn't since Ryder had Shane as Tristan's guard, but he was so young. If a rogue attacked him, he wouldn't last for more than a few minutes. I wanted someone more capable to watch over him.
"Don't worry so much. I'm heading back now. I just need to check on you from time to time to please my wolf. He gets antsy when we are away from you for too long. He worries." I knew the feeling. I would get that way when I was away from Ryder and Tris for too long. I could only imagine having someone else in my head yelling at me to go to them. It was those times I was truly thankful for not having a wolf. Though I was still stumped as to why I didn't have one. Apparently, all werewolves had one, so it was odd for me not to have one. No one mentioned it out of respect, but I had a feeling they all had their own theories as to why I was so different.
I pushed those thoughts to the back of my mind as I walked Johnson out of the greenhouse. I could feel the tingles and worry, the feeling of drowning and darkness coming over me, the telltale sign I needed to find Ryder. He would be the only one to soothe these feelings. As I read my thoughts, Johnson pointed to the house.
"He's just pulled in. Go meet him. Tristan will be in his lessons for a few more hours. Take that time with your mate." He winked as he walked off, shaking my head. I did as he said. I needed to spend time with Ryder, not just to ease my nerves, but also to open up to him. I had learned so much over the last week, but it wasn't enough. I wanted to know more, to know all of him.
"Luna." The group in the kitchen bowed as I walked over. Blushing, I said a small hello as I pulled out the fixings for sandwiches. I knew he was hungry. His own hunger added to mine, making me feel faint. My surroundings were spinning slightly as I did my best not to stumble. Just as I placed everything on the counter, Ryder came in. The others also noted his speedy entrance. He was by my side in seconds, holding tightly to my waist as his nose buried itself into the crook of my neck.
"I'm sorry. I didn't think my skipping breakfast would affect you like this. Come. I'm sure Cordy wouldn't mind taking over." He asked just as my little red-headed friend bounced into the kitchen. All smiles and giggles as she tossed Ryder a banana. "I got this, Luna. Go and relax. You know you won't have a chance when your little monster gets home." She winked while giggling some more. If anyone else had called Tris that, I would have knocked a few teeth from them. But I knew she cared for him and he loved her little nickname for him. He was constantly growling or roaring at anyone who wanted to get close to me, even Ryder. He said it was his time with me and everyone else would just have to wait their turn. It was the cutest thing.
"That's actually a good idea. We need to talk," I said as I turned in Ryder's arms. I wasn't lost to the look of sheer panic that crossed his features before he covered it up. Guilt washed over me. He had been expecting these words to come from me for the last week. And now that they were here, he looked as if he wanted to push them all back down and just enjoy our time together. He nodded and picked me up. He smirked down at me when I narrowed my eyes at him.
"I'm hungry, not crippled." His laugh was sweet and made my stomach flutter. It wasn't fair. Any sound he made really had me feeling flustered. I knew he could smell what he did to me, but never acted on it. I was beginning to think he didn't want me, but the look in his eyes told me otherwise.
Walking up the stairs, he pushed open the door to his bedroom, gently setting me down on the soft duvet as he quickly peeled the banana for me. I had stifled a chuckle as he handed it to me. "Thank you," I murmured as he sat down beside me. His eyes locked on my lips as I brought the fruit into my mouth, doing my best to hide the smirk that wanted to break free. I let my tongue run circles around the tip, teasing him. I pushed a little more of the fruit in as I let my tongue wrap around the width of it. His breathing hitched as I saw his fists ball at his sides. Without warning, I bit into the banana and chomped on the rather large piece in my mouth as I smiled cheekily at him. I so badly wanted to wink at him, but by the look in his eyes, I thought better of it. His wide brown orbs held a bit of terror as he tried to cross his leg over the other casually. I couldn't hold it in any longer. The loud laugh I had been holding in burst through my lips as I set the rest of the fruit down on the bedside table.
"Don't worry, I don't bite that hard." I laughed again as he cleared his throat and clenched his legs tighter over each other. He was so adorable sometimes. I crawled into his lap and snuggled up to his chest, inhaling his wonderful scent as I fisted the collar of his shirt. I didn't know what came over me, but I just needed to be closer to him in that moment. He didn't object. In fact, he pulled me closer if that was possible and placed a small kiss on my forehead. I wanted more, though I needed more, and I wasn't above taking what I wanted. So, doing just that, I cupped the back of his neck, pulling him closer to me. His lips brushed against mine softly, once before I crashed mine to his with a force that had us falling back onto the bed. I pulled back a second, wanting to tell him what I needed to before I allowed this to go any further. Taking a deep breath, I looked down at him, getting lost in those beautiful chocolate-colored orbs.
"Ryder," he froze. I wanted to put him at ease. I knew he thought he knew what I was going to say next. So, with a small, reassuring smile and a chased kiss, I finished. "I'm staying."
Chapter 13. Ryder's POV.
"You're staying?" I asked, shocked beyond words. I almost don't believe what just slipped past her now. Swollen lips. She beams at me before bringing those wonderfully sweet lips back to mine. "Yes, I'm staying." She murmurs into my mouth. She's staying. Claim her. Mark her now. My wolf goes crazy at her words. I can feel him clawing to get to the surface. He wants her just as much as I do, but I know I have to give her time. She may be staying, but I'm not sure she's ready to be marked, to be mated. Don't let her go. Mark her. The feeling of her tongue running across my collarbone snaps me back to the moment. Her teeth graze my skin as her small hand trails the lines of my stomach. My breathing hitches as soft fingers slip under the material, losing the internal fight with my wolf as soon as I feel her teeth graze the dip of my collarbone. She favors that spot on me, the spot where her mark will be. I lose all control at that thought and my wolf takes over, flipping her and trapping her under us. Her eyes fluttered as she sighed at the closeness. The sensation of being so near caused the swell of desire to increase. I wasn't sure how long we could hold out, pushing the need back. I wanted to be closer to her. Not like this. I can't take her like this. Back off now, I plead with my wolf. I wanted our first time to be special. She deserved that. She deserved more than a lust-driven encounter. Hell, I deserved more. She needed to know how much I've held back waiting for her. Wanting only her, only my mate.
"No, I want her. You want her? And she's ready. I can smell it. Let us take her." He was so excited at the prospect of mating our mate, claiming her. Visions of her running with our pups and the pleasure we could give her. I wanted all of that. But when she was ready, he was fully in control. I was just a thought in the backdrop of my own mind. I could feel everything he was doing, but I wasn't able to take back control. He wanted this too badly, taking my hand and running it along her inner thigh. I watched intently. He was too caught up in the feeling that he didn't note her small whimpers of fear, the shuddering of her body as he whispered in her ear, or the way her small hands were pressing against our chest. I could sense she wanted us to stop, but my wolf didn't.
"She's scared. Enough now. Please stop." Her voice was nothing above a whisper, but it was enough to have my wolf freeze at the thought of hurting her. Pulling back slightly, he gazed down at her. I could feel the pain in her chest as he watched her, tears filling her eyes as she shook. "I'm sorry. I didn't mean to. I thought you wanted this," he said, cupping her cheek. When her eyes finally opened, she gasped. I knew she was seeing the black orbs of my wolf instead of my own brown ones. "Give me back control. You scared her. Let me calm her." I screamed as I felt the barrier he put up start to crumble, allowing me to take back control. "Shh, it's okay. I'm here. I'm in control now. We won't hurt you," I said softly. I made a move to write myself, but she clung to me, forcing me to stay positioned between her thighs. "We, your wolf, and you." She was still breathing heavily, and the shaking had yet to ease. But the way she pulled me closer told me she was seeking comfort in our presence.
"Yes, I lost control and he took over. He didn't mean to push you. The urge to mark and mate you was just too strong for us." I could hear my wolf whimpering as he replayed what had just happened. He had almost hurt our mate. Guilt and shame filled him. The pain he wanted to inflict upon us was great. His need to atone for his actions was driving me crazy. "Calm down and I'll let you apologize. She needs to know she will be safe with you as well as with me." I told him to help ease his pain. He wants to say something. Would that be all right? I promise I won't let him take over again. He won't hurt you. He feels terrible for what he did. We both do." She just stared at me, her eyes wide as she thought about it. Finally, she nodded and gripped my arms tighter, letting him come to the front. I could feel her short nails dig into my skin. I could hear her heart speed up and her breathing came in short pants.
"Please don't be frightened of me, mate. I am so sorry. I won't let that happen again. Please, please forgive me," he cried, burying his face in the crook of her neck. We were both shocked to feel one of her small hands slide up our arm and rub soothing circles on our back. We had frightened her, and here she was comforting us. She really was amazing.
"It's okay. I'm just not used to being with someone like that. I know you have needs. I can't fill them. You can be with someone else if you need to. Just as long as she is willing. That's all I ask." tensing at the emotionless state of her voice. We were both stunned at what she had just said. Did she really think we would be with another? That we would degrade and disrespect her that way? Why would we do that? We would rather spend the rest of our lives controlling our own needs if that meant you were happy and comfortable with us. We will never take another who is not you into our bed. Anger rose in us at the thought of anyone who wasn't her beneath us. The sounds of someone else had bile rising in our throats. There would never be anyone but her. I had made sure of that.
"It's fine, Ryder. I know a man has needs. You don't need to change for me. I'm sure one of the many you have been with would be willing to help you out again." Her voice was so cold, almost robotic. Her eyes set straight ahead, glazed over as if she really wasn't here. Taking back control, I looked at her, cupping her face and turning it until her eyes were locked with mine. I sucked in a deep breath. I tried to hide my smile, but failed miserably, causing her to look at me with narrowed eyes.
"Dallas, there has never been nor will there ever be anyone but you, my mate. I want my mate and only my mate." Cocking her head, she just lay there thinking until realization hit her. Her gorgeous de eyes were burning a hole through me. I couldn't help but let my grin widen. "You mean that can't be? Alphas, they use others. They take what they want." She was rambling, but her words cut me like a dull blade. Did she really believe that? I knew in some cases when an alpha had yet to find his mate after his 18th birthday, he would be with a female wolf. But most, like me, would hold out for their mates. Not all alphas are like that. Many of us wait for our mates. Even normal werewolves wait. Why would you want to share something as passionate and loving as that with someone other than the one person you were made for? The one person made for you?
"You've really never," she trailed, her cheeks flushing crimson. "I have never been with anyone. If I have to wait forever, I will. If it makes you happy." I gave her a small, reassuring smile. It was true. I would never touch anyone who wasn't her. The thought alone made me and my wolf sick. I wasn't sure what I expected next from her, but it sure wasn't tears and sobs of apologies.
"I'm so sorry. I'm I'm not I'm used." She cried as she pushed me away from her. Her words took over, and everything went silent for a moment as I thought about what she had just said. Our maid is not pure. How many were there? Did she love him? Them? Does she still? My wolf howled, thinking of her giving her heart away to someone other than us.
"Do you want me to leave?" My head snapped up at her question. Was she crazy? Yes, we were disappointed that she hadn't waited, but we would never hold it against her. We loved her too much. I wouldn't have cared if she had been with half of Elgen as long as we were now to be her only.
"Of course not. I don't care about that. As long as I am the only one you want now, I don't care what you did in your past," I said truthfully, getting up and walking over to her. I wrapped my arms around her, which only seemed to draw more tears from her.
"It wasn't like that, Ryder. He took it from me." I froze. My grip tightened harshly as I tried to clear my mind. Red was all I saw. Ripples ran through my muscles as I fought to control my wolf. He wanted out, and he wanted blood. Venomous growls and agonizing howls tore through my head as he clawed his way through. It was the whimpers of pain that brought me back to reality as I looked down at a shaking Dallas. Wincing in pain, she pulled herself from me, holding her hand up when I made a move to step closer to her.
"I'm fine, just a couple scratches." I noticed the few red marks on her shirt, which were stains I had caused. For the second time today, I felt the urge to jump out the window, bash my head in, or rip out my claws. I had just hurt her. I lost it, both my wolf and I, and we hurt her.
"I really, Ryder, it's fine. I know you didn't mean to. Tristan's home. I need to change before he sees this." She walked over and cupped my jaw. The look of understanding and sorrow filled her eyes as she gave me a sad smile and walked to the closet. As much as I didn't want to let this go, I knew I had to for the moment. I couldn't risk the chance of Tristan hearing. I followed her in the closet, my arms wrapping around her softly, hesitantly. I sighed in relief when she didn't flinch or pull away from my touch, kissing her temple, then resting my chin on her head, I took a deep breath.
"I don't want to rush you, but I need to know Dallas tonight." She stiffened a bit, but soon relaxed and nodded. "Okay."
