You're running a MIG gun on a flat cable, welding the same joint 8 hours a day. The quality has to be consistent. Every weld has to pass visual inspection. No undercut, no porosity, proper size. The work is physical. You're on your feet all day. You're wearing a welding jacket in a shop that runs hot from the equipment. By 2:00 in the afternoon, your back aches and you're sweating. You understand the metallurgy behind the problems. When something goes wrong on a job site and nobody can figure it out, they come ask you. That's a different feeling from being the new guy who doesn't know anything.

Level five, the specialty welder. Five years in and you decide to go deeper instead of broader. You start learning TIG welding of exotic materials, titanium, Inconel, duplex stainless steel. These materials are used in aerospace, pharmaceutical manufacturing, and offshore oil. The tolerances are tight. The qualifications are stringent. The pay is exceptional. TIG welding titanium is technically demanding in a way most welding isn't. The metal is extremely reactive with oxygen. Contamination is invisible but catastrophic. You have to shield the weld with inert gas on both sides. Your technique has to be perfect every single pass. There's no grinding and re-welding with titanium. There's no fixing a bad pass. You do it right the first time or you do it again from scratch.

You pass your first titanium weld test, then your Inconel qualification. Each new material certification opens doors to higher paying specialized work. Aerospace fabrication facilities, pharmaceutical plants where weld quality affects product purity. You're making $38, $40 an hour on specialty work. Good weeks, you're over $1,000 a day before taxes. Your reputation starts building in the specialty world. Contractors call you because they know your qualifications and your quality. You're not hunting for work anymore. Work is finding you.

Level six, the welding inspector. Seven years of welding and you study for your certified welding inspector credential. The CWI exam is comprehensive. Welding processes, metallurgy, codes and standards, visual inspection criteria, non-destructive testing methods. You study for six months. You pass on your first attempt. Welding inspectors don't weld. They verify that others weld correctly. You inspect welds against code. You review welding procedure specifications. You certify welder qualifications. Level seven, the welding supervisor. 10 years into your career, and a large fabrication company recruits you to run their welding department. 30 welders. You've run a profitable business. Your body carries the years. Your lower back is a daily negotiation. Your lungs have had 20 years of fumes despite always wearing respiratory protection. Your hearing is diminished. These are the costs. You knew them going in and you'd make the same choice again.

You mentor young welders who come through the shop. Some of them remind you of yourself at 19, eager, a little scared, not sure what they're getting into. You tell them the truth.
