This is what you have to learn with respect to this particular module. Okay.

If you go through your syllabus, it has been written something like coral reef. Okay, that is mentioned in your syllabus. That will be studied in the module environment and biogeography. Okay, coral reef and associated theories. Right now, if we talk about oceanography, what we are actually trying to understand is what is there inside the ocean. Okay.

If you look around you on land, you can see various physical features. You can see mountains, plateaus, plains, rivers, valleys, deltas. All these physical features you can see on land. Likewise, you have various physical features within the ocean. Okay. We won't be able to see it very easily on land. If you just look around, you can see so many, so many various physical features. It is not the case with respect to oceans. So that is the reason the studies related to oceans, it has been conducted very recently. Understanding it, because if you want to know what is inside the ocean, we have to actually take some effort to try to understand what is there inside the ocean. Okay. Land, it is very easy. You can just look around, you can see various physical features, but that is not the case with respect to oceans. Understanding it.

So that is the reason what happened is during the Second World War. When was the Second World War? 1939 to 1945. You have the Second World War. And this war begins in Germany when it invades Poland, prompting Britain and France to declare war on Germany. So, I'm not talking about the Second World War, that is not our area of study. But this conflict actually leads to what is called as the Second World War.

Now, if I talk about this particular war, this particular war is not just a historic war. I can definitely say that this particular war has shaped the geography of the 21st century. From the lens of a student of international history or from the perspective of a student of international relations, what, how we analyze the Second World War? We actually say it like the world became bipolar, emergence of superpowers, etc., etc. So that is the outcome once we actually look at it from the historic perspective or international relations perspective. But from the geography perspective, if you look at the Second World War, it is basically this particular war has actually shaped the geography of the 21st century. The question is, how?

Now, I can say that the innovations, the various technological innovations which have been developed during the Second World War or after the war has changed the way we look at oceans. We look about ocean floors. Understanding it. The tech, the innovations or the technological advancement which we have actually developed during the Second World War or after the Second World War that has completely changed what? That has completely changed the way we look about oceans. For example, we can never forget the role of submarines in World War II. Submarines means what? The watercraft capable of operation underwater. So submarines played a very important role in World War II.

So, with respect to the geographer's perspective, the perspective of a geographer, these submarines which have been used in World War II has actually resulted or has actually contributed in exploring oceans. Understanding it. Till that time, we never had a detailed understanding with respect to what is there within the ocean. It is only in the 1950s and 60s various studies have been conducted. We started conducting various studies to understand. We started taking some effort to understand what is there within the ocean. Understanding it.

So, it is, it is basically, if I talk about this sub, what, this submarine, the primary purpose of the submarine which has been used in World War II is military. Okay. They have not developed a submarine for geographical purpose or, or they have not developed the submarines for exploration of oceans. That was actually a bonus. What is the primary purpose? Primary purpose was actually military. Understanding it. But the advancements in submarine or submarine-related technology helped us to understand or explore the deeper part of the oceans. Understanding it. Help us to understand the deeper part of the ocean. That has actually resulted in mapping of the ocean floor. Understanding it. So that has actually resulted in the mapping of the ocean floor.

So, along with that, along with that, we have it like the development of various sound recording machines. Sound recording machines that actually enabled oceanographers to know more about oceans. How to know? To know more about the depth of the oceans. How? By this particular technique, sound has been penetrated. Sound has been penetrated inside the ocean and it will actually touch the bottom of the ocean. The sound will actually return back. Understanding it. So we will actually find out the time, the duration, and that is how we were able to understand what is the depth of the ocean. Then you have it like radar sounding, then that sonar, sound navigation and ranging, echo devices. So it is basically the advancement in technology started with what? Started with the submarines and along with other technologies that actually helped in understanding with respect to the depth of the ocean. What is there within the ocean? And we were able, we were able to map the ocean floor. We were able to understand what are the physical features within the ocean. Understanding it.

So, on the basis of these collected data, what we have actually done is we started representing. We started representing the depth of the ocean, various relief features of the ocean in the form of a graph, in the form of a curve. Because you can just imagine, see, you can see that if you start walking, what, just imagine you are actually walking into the ocean, you will actually feel it like, what? You will actually feel it, the depth goes on increasing. Yes or no? Yes. So, what I'm saying is like, oceans don't have a very, like, what, the same length everywhere. You have it like different depths. Near the shoreline, it is very shallower. Once you move away from the shoreline, what happens? The depth goes on increasing. And with the help of the sound recording machines and all, we have actually calculated the average depth of the ocean is 4,000 meters. What is the average depth of the ocean? It is 4,000 meters. Understanding it?

So, what I'm trying to say is, on the basis of the data we collected, what we have done? We started representing the depth of the ocean, various relief features of the ocean in the form of a diagram. Understanding it. That particular diagram or that particular map, it is called a bathymetric map. What it is called? It is called a bathymetric map. And the study is called what? Study is called bathymetry. This is the first topic of study in this particular module. So, what is bathymetry? Bathymetry is nothing but you are actually studying about the depth of the ocean. Various relief features within the ocean. And we actually represented the depth, the relief features in the form of a diagram, in the form of a curve, in the form of a graph, whatever it is. And that is what is called as a bathymetric map. You got an introduction? Yes or no? Yes. So, it is called a bathymetric map. It is also called as a hypsographic map, hypsographic curve.

Now, see, if you want to measure the depth of the ocean, you need a reference line, right? You need a reference. So, that reference we actually call it as mean sea level. It is called what? MSL. Mean Sea Level. So, suppose this is the mean sea level, the average sea level. We'll take an average, average sea level across the ocean. Understanding it. From this average sea level, what we are actually trying to do? We are trying to measure the depth. And if you start measuring the depth, what will happen? Near the shoreline, it will be just like 200 meters. Once we start traveling away from the shoreline, it becomes like 3 kilometers, 4 kilometers, etc., 4,000 meters. But you need a baseline. We call it as baseline or base level. So, what is the base level? Base level is nothing but it is nothing but mean sea level. MSL in short, we call it as MSL.

So, what is actually the hypsographic curve? Hypsographic curve means, in very simple terms, on the basis of data collected using various devices, using various technology, the relief features of the ocean, the depth of the ocean is shown using a curve by taking mean sea level as the base. Understanding it. By taking mean sea level as the reference. And that is what we call it as a hypsographic curve. Understood? I'll give you notes, okay? So, what is a hypsographic curve? Hypsographic curve is nothing but you are trying to represent the various relief features inside the ocean. You are trying to represent various depths inside the ocean with reference to what? With reference to mean sea level. On the basis of what? On the basis of data collected using various technology. That curve, that graph, it is called a hypsographic curve. Is this clear? Okay.

Now, come back to the World War story. I told you the submarines which have been used. What? The submarines which have been used in the war that actually helped us to explore the various, uh, the, the various relief features within the ocean. Relief features means physical features. Understanding it? For example, on land, you have various physical features. What are the physical features on land? Mountain is a physical feature. Valley is a physical feature. Delta is a physical feature. Likewise, you have physical features within the ocean also. Understanding it?

So, what I'm trying to say is, in 1960, in 1960, Harry Hess, the name of an American geologist. He was a former naval officer in World War II. He worked as a former naval officer in World War II. He actually combined all these data. He collected all these data and he proposed a theory with respect to the ocean floor. What do you mean by ocean floor? What do you mean by ocean floor? Ocean floor is nothing but, here onwards, if I use the term ocean floor, you should have the understanding that it is the land under the ocean, under the water. Getting it? The land under the water which is called the ocean floor. Getting it or not? So, he actually collected data because he was a former naval officer. He was an American geologist. He actually collected data and he proposed a theory in with respect to this ocean floor. That theory we call it as seafloor spreading. We are not going to study this particular theory in oceanography. That is being studied as a part of geomorphology. But I just want to connect the dots, how this theory has been evolved. Okay. That is actually from the after the World War. Like he was a former naval officer in World War II. He was also an American geologist and he has got all the data with respect to the ocean floor and the mapping of the ocean has been done and he actually proposed a theory what is called as seafloor spreading. So it happened in 1960.

So, what I'm trying to say is, almost all the studies, in-depth studies with respect to oceans, has been conducted after World War II, in 1950s and 60s. Understood? Yes or no? Right.

Earth's surface is 75% water and 25% land. Of the water, 97% is saltwater, leaving only 3% as freshwater. Okay. Most of that, two-thirds of the freshwater on Earth is frozen in snow and ice, in glaciers, ice caps, etc. That leaves only about 1% of the Earth's water as liquid and fresh, making it a very scarce natural resource. Making it a very scarce natural resource. Okay.

Next, you write like the land surface. Like the land surface. Ocean bottom represents various kinds of marine features. The knowledge about various relief features of the ocean floor was very limited in the past centuries. But the development of sound recording machines enabled the oceanographers to get more knowledge about the depth and topography. To get knowledge about the depth and topography of the ocean bottom. Of ocean bottom by this technique, sound is penetrated inside the ocean and it returns back to the surface. It returns back to the surface after striking the bottom. The duration of sound wave traveled is calculated and accordingly, the depth of various parts of the ocean recorded.

Now, right now, these echo sounding techniques. Now, these echo sounding techniques have been replaced by radar sounding, remotely operated vehicles, and autonomous underwater vehicles with sonar and cameras.

It is a collaborative project between the Nippon Foundation of Japan, NIP, and GEBCO, General Bathymetric Chart of Oceans. It was launched at the United Nations Ocean Conference, United Nations Ocean Conference in June 2017 and is aligned with United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 14. Right now, India's Samudrayaan, initiated in 2021, aims to explore the ocean bed at 6,000 meters. At 6,000 meters in the central Indian Ocean by 2027. By 2027, it studies the deep ocean environment, focusing on resource exploration and marine research. Okay. So, this is actually the project of India. So, we are actually talking about the bathymetry. So, bathymetry is nothing. In a nutshell, the point is, bathymetry or hypsographic curve is nothing but we collected data with respect to oceans by using various technologies and we started mapping the ocean floor. What is mapping the ocean floor? We are trying to understand the depth of the ocean. Then we are trying to understand what are the relief features within the ocean and we started representing using it in the form of a diagram. And that diagram is what we call it as a hypsographic curve. And it is basically we have international projects as well as national projects. Almost all the countries have like, uh, have the deep sea ocean missions right now. And India's mission is nothing but it is called Samudrayaan.

Right now, what is that diagram? So, I talked about the hypsographic curve. So, how that curve looks like? Looks like this. This is coastline. This is shoreline. This is the mean sea level. What do you mean by coastline and shoreline? See, this is where you have the sand deposits. Sand deposit is called beach. If you go to a beach, where the beach ends, near the water, near the sea, near the ocean, that is called shoreline. Where the beach ends near the land, it is called coastline. I hope now you understand what is coastline and shoreline. So, how can you define beach? Now, what is the technical definition of beach? Beach. Beaches are temporary sand deposits between what? Between coastline and shoreline. This is the definition of beach. Temporary sand deposits. Is that clear? Yes or no? So, temporary sand deposits between coastline and shoreline, it is called beach. Okay.

Now, see, this is the sea level. Here the water starts. There ends the shoreline. There ends the coastline. Here we are actually entering into the ocean. Yes or no? Now, see, here the depth actually goes on increasing. I'm drawing the ocean floor. What is ocean floor? Land beneath the water. Okay. It is just 2,200 meters here, but it is 4,000 meters here, average. Understanding it? Yes or no? Now, this is just 200 meters. This is 4,000 meters. Here. This is called continental shelf. It is called what? Continental shelf. Okay.

Now, see, what is the difference between this one? I'm numbering it as one, two, and three. What is the difference between one and two? Here it is like you have a slope. Yes or no? This is called continental slope. Okay. And this is called abyssal plain or it is also called deep sea plain. Abyssal plain or deep sea plain. What is abyssal plain? Deep sea plain. Abyssal plain or deep sea plain. Is this clear? This is what is the hypsographic curve.

Now, you'll ask me, where is this ridge, trench, etc.? Now, if I look into oceans, I told you there are so many relief features, physical features which you can see within the ocean. Relief features divided into two: major, minor. In major, you write: one is continental shelf, two is continental slope, three is abyssal plain. Done. In minor, you write: number one, ridges. Number two, trenches. These two are very familiar for you. At least you might have heard about some trenches, some ridges. Number three, submarine canyon. C-A-N-Y-O-N. Canyon. Submarine canyons. Canyon. You might have heard about canyons. Submarine canyons. Number four, continental rise. Number five, sea rise. Number six, fracture zone. Fracture zone. Is that clear? The minor relief features is submarine canyons, ridges, submarine canyons, continental rise, sea rise, what is fracture zones? Uh, six, right? Okay.

So, that means our first level of study is we need to understand what are these relief features. Okay. The bathymetric map or bathymetric curve will actually help us to understand various relief features of the ocean. And with the help of data collected, and we actually understood like there are major and minor relief features in the ocean. The major relief features we represented like this: continental, continental slope, and abyssal plain. Minor relief features are submarine canyons, ridges, trenches, continental rise, sea rise, and fracture zone. So, we need to pick up each one and we'll try to understand what it is, how they are formed, and also examples from various oceans.

Tell me, how many oceans are there? H, how many oceans are there? Five. Again. Pacific Ocean, Atlantic Ocean, Indian Ocean, Southern Ocean, Arctic Ocean. How many continents are there?

>> Seven. Actually, uh, there is no particular definition regarding there are seven continents. Okay. It is basically by convention we say it like seven continents. Okay. If you actually somebody from Japan, they actually count Europe, Asia, or somebody from Europe, they actually count Europe and Asia as one, Eurasia. Okay. So, there is no, uh, what, a clear-cut definition regarding there are seven continents. By convention, we actually say it like, what, there are seven continents. Right? Okay.

Now, uh, yeah, so oceans, five. So, what we need to understand is like, out of these five, three major oceans are Pacific, Atlantic, and Indian. Okay. So, we need to understand in detail what are the various relief features of the Pacific Ocean, Atlantic Ocean, and Indian Ocean. The study we call it as topography of the Pacific Ocean, topography of the Atlantic Ocean, topography of the Indian Ocean.

Now, one thing you need to understand here is, see, this particular module, it is like more like, uh, what, every, uh, uh, the conventional syllabus. Okay. Nothing related to current affairs or something here. Suppose there is a question related to explain the topography of the Indian Ocean, you have just, you only have one answer for that. So, your primary job while studying this particular module is like, what? What is given in the class notes, you study it as it is reproduced in the answer sheet. You don't have to add anything from your side. But only thing what you have to do is like, once you actually, suppose you, while reading the newspaper, you come across, okay, a particular country has launched a new project related to ocean, those things you can add it to your answer, that will actually enhance it. Understanding it. Otherwise, the content remains the same. Okay. So, it is basically like, suppose there is a question, later, topography of the Pacific Ocean, topography of the Atlantic Ocean. You have a diagram for that, plus you have an explanation for that. So, what is your job is like, have a conceptual clarity, learn, revise that particular diagram. Just reproduce the same in the answer sheet. You will get marks. Understanding it. You don't have to do anything extra from that. But if you have, if you didn't study that particular thing, you won't be able to write anything. Okay. If you don't know the topography of the Pacific Ocean, you can't write anything because it's, it's technical. Understanding it. So, what we'll actually, but only thing is like, topography and all remains the same. But there are some topics related, especially coming to the applied part. In the applied part, this is basically, this is, these everything is not given in your syllabus. Okay. Sea level change, law of the sea, law of the sea in your syllabus. Deep sea mining, ocean and politics, various reports. So, this part you have to actually, like, what, you have to actually add some current affairs later to it. Reason current affairs. Okay.
