Let's start by listening to God's word, and then we'll go to him in prayer.
Every morning when you wake up, you face the most important decision of your entire day. It's not what to wear, what to eat, or where to go. It's not about your schedule, your priorities, or your plans. The most critical decision you make every morning is this: Who will you serve today? Will you serve yourself, your fears, your desires, or your circumstances? Or will you make the conscious, deliberate, life-changing choice to serve the Lord?
Most people drift through their days on autopilot, never realizing that every moment is a choice, every breath is an opportunity, and every heartbeat is a chance to declare their allegiance to the King of Kings. They wake up spiritually neutral, spiritually passive, spiritually undecided and wonder why their lives lack power, purpose, and divine direction.
But there's a different way to live. There's a way to wake up every morning with supernatural strength, divine clarity, and heavenly authority. There's a way to begin each day not as a victim of circumstances, but as a victorious child of the Most High God. It starts with one declaration, one decision, one deliberate choice that changes everything.
Joshua 24:15 declares, "But as for me and my household, we will serve the Lord." This isn't just a historical statement made by an ancient leader. This is a timeless declaration that every believer should make fresh every morning. Joshua didn't say we serve the Lord in past tense or we might serve the Lord as a possibility. He said we will serve the Lord as a decisive, determined, non-negotiable commitment.
The word "serve" in Hebrew is *abad*, which means to work for, to worship, to be enslaved to, to be devoted to. Joshua was saying, "As for me and my family, we choose to work for God, worship God, and devote ourselves completely to God." This wasn't a casual religious statement. This was a radical life commitment.
But notice the context. Joshua was speaking to the Israelites at a crucial moment in their history. They had to choose between serving the gods of their ancestors, the gods of the Amorites, or the living God who had delivered them from Egypt. Everyone around them was making different choices, following different gods, pursuing different priorities.
That's exactly where you find yourself today. You're surrounded by people who serve the God of money, the God of pleasure, the God of success, the God of approval, or the God of comfort. Every voice around you is calling you to serve something other than the Lord. Every advertisement, every social media post, every cultural message is trying to convince you to bow down to something other than Jesus.
But Joshua took a stand. In the middle of a confused culture, he made a clear choice. In the middle of spiritual compromise, he made a spiritual commitment. In the middle of moral confusion, he drew a moral line in the sand and said, "I don't care what everyone else is doing. As for me and my household, we will serve the Lord."
This is the same choice you need to make every morning when you open your eyes. Before you check your phone, before you think about your problems, before you worry about your day, you need to make the conscious decision to serve the Lord. You need to declare your allegiance to the King before any other voice gets a chance to influence your mind.
Most people start their day by serving their fears. They wake up and immediately begin worrying about what might go wrong, what problems they might face, what obstacles they might encounter. They serve their anxieties instead of serving their God. They bow down to their concerns instead of bowing down to their Creator.
Others start their day by serving their desires. They wake up focused on what they want, what they need, what they deserve, what they're going to get. Their prayers become shopping lists instead of surrender statements. They approach God as a cosmic vending machine instead of the sovereign Lord of the universe.
But when you start your day by declaring, "As for me and my household, we will serve the Lord," everything changes. Your perspective shifts from earthly to eternal. Your focus moves from problems to possibilities. Your energy flows from human effort to divine power. Your confidence rests not on your abilities, but on God's faithfulness.
This daily declaration is not just about what you won't do. It's about what you will do. You will serve God with your thoughts by thinking his thoughts after him. You will serve God with your words by speaking life, encouragement, and truth. You will serve God with your actions by walking in obedience to his commands. You will serve God with your resources by stewarding them according to his principles.
This isn't a burden. It's a privilege. This isn't slavery. It's freedom. When you serve the Lord, you're not giving up your life. You're finding your life. You're not limiting your potential. You're unleashing your purpose. You're not restricting your joy. You're accessing the source of all true joy.
But here's what makes this declaration so powerful: It's not just about you. Joshua said, "As for me and my household," he was taking responsibility not just for his own spiritual life, but for the spiritual atmosphere of his entire home. He was establishing a family legacy of faithfulness. He was creating a household culture of worship.
When you make this declaration, you're not just making a personal choice; you're making a generational impact. You're establishing spiritual authority in your home. You're creating an environment where God's presence is welcome, God's word is honored, and God's will is pursued. You're building a fortress of faith that protects everyone under your roof.
This is why the enemy fights so hard against this daily declaration. He knows that when families choose to serve the Lord together, his kingdom suffers tremendous defeat. He knows that households committed to God become launching pads for revival, transformation, and kingdom advancement.
Your daily "yes" to God is not just a religious routine. It's a revolutionary act. Every morning when you declare your commitment to serve the Lord, you're joining a spiritual rebellion against the kingdom of darkness. You're enlisting in God's army for another day of victorious warfare. You're positioning yourself to be used by God in ways you never imagined.
Now, let's come before our faithful Father in prayer, asking Him to help us make this daily declaration with sincere hearts and unwavering commitment.
Heavenly Father, I come before You this morning with a heart that desires to serve You completely. I recognize that this day is not mine to waste, but Yours to steward. This life is not mine to live selfishly, but Yours to live purposefully. This breath is not mine to take for granted, but Yours to use for Your glory.
Lord, I make the same declaration that Joshua made thousands of years ago, but I make it fresh and new for this day: "As for me and my household, we will serve the Lord." This is not just words flowing from my lips. This is the cry of my heart, the commitment of my soul, the determination of my spirit.
I choose to serve You with my thoughts today. Father, I surrender my mind to Your truth. I refuse to let my thoughts drift into worry, fear, doubt, or negativity. Instead, I choose to think about things that are true, noble, right, pure, lovely, admirable, excellent, and praiseworthy. When anxious thoughts try to invade my mind, I will capture them and make them obedient to Christ.
I choose to serve You with my words today. Lord, let my speech be seasoned with salt and grace. Help me to speak life and not death, hope and not despair, faith and not fear. Let my words encourage the discouraged, strengthen the weak, and point the lost toward You. Guard my tongue from gossip, criticism, complaining, and all forms of corrupt communication. Instead, let me speak Your truth in love, declare Your promises with confidence, and worship You with my voice.
I choose to serve You with my actions today. Father, I want my life to be a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to You. Help me to walk in obedience to Your commands, not out of religious duty, but out of grateful love. When I face temptation, give me the strength to choose righteousness. When I encounter opportunities to serve others, give me the heart to respond with generous love. Let every deed I do today bring glory to Your name and advancement to Your kingdom.
I choose to serve You with my resources today. Lord, I acknowledge that everything I have belongs to You. My time, my talents, my treasures are all gifts from Your hand. Help me to steward them wisely and generously. Show me how to use my resources to bless others and build Your kingdom. Keep me from the love of money and the trap of materialism. Instead, let me store up treasures in heaven where moth and rust do not destroy and thieves do not break in and steal.
I choose to serve You in my workplace today. Father, help me to work with excellence and integrity, not to impress men, but to honor You. Let my co-workers see Jesus in my attitude, my ethics, and my interactions. Use me to bring light into dark places, and hope into discouraged hearts.
I choose to serve You in my family today. Lord, help me to love my family members the way You love them. Give me patience with their weaknesses, grace for their failures, and wisdom for their guidance. Let my home be a place where Your presence is welcomed, Your word is honored, and Your love is demonstrated.
I choose to serve You when facing challenges today. Lord, I know that this day may bring difficulties, obstacles, and trials. But I declare in advance that I will serve You in the midst of every storm. When problems arise, I will trust in Your sovereignty. When disappointments come, I will rest in Your goodness. When people fail me, I will find my security in Your faithfulness. Let every trial today become an opportunity to demonstrate faith and every difficulty become a platform for Your glory.
Father, I also declare this commitment over my household. I pray for every person who lives under my roof, who is connected to my family, who is part of my circle of influence. Lord, let this declaration of service create a spiritual atmosphere in my home that draws people to You. Let my family see what it looks like to serve You with joy, devotion, and consistency.
As I go into this day, let this declaration echo in my heart: "As for me and my household, we will serve the Lord," not because we have to, but because we want to. Not because we are perfect, but because You are perfect. Not because we are strong, but because You are strong.
