There are certain degrees that produce rich people at statistically significant rates, and it has nothing to do with passion or prestige. It has everything to do with solving expensive problems that companies will pay to fix. These are the degrees where the median graduate, not the exceptional one, just the competent one, ends up financially comfortable by their 30s and wealthy by their 50s.

Computer science graduates don't just make money. They make the kind of money that they can retire by the time they're 40. Now, every fresh CS graduate will tell you that the job market has been brutal lately. We've seen over 100,000 tech layoffs. Universities doubled their enrollment just as demand collapsed. There are now boot camps that offer comparable starting salaries with way lower costs. But don't be fooled. The industry isn't eliminating software engineering. It's eliminating junior positions. AI is automating the simple stuff: basic apps, straightforward features, cookie-cutter implementations. What's left requires system thinking, architecture, and deep technical understanding. This is exactly why a CS degree becomes a lot more valuable, not less. Boot camps were viable when companies tolerated junior developers who could follow tutorials and copy-paste from Stack Overflow. But that era is over. CS grads know algorithms, data structures, operating systems, compilers, networks—the foundational knowledge that lets you understand why the database is slow, not just how to run a query. When companies hire few engineers but expect each one to be a lot more productive, they want someone with computer science knowledge who can tell when AI comes up with a crappy piece of code. A boot camp graduate will not know that. The entry-level market is generally tough still, but the long-term fundamentals favor people with real CS education. Canadian entry-level ranges from 70 to 120K depending on the company, with mid-career hitting 120K and above, and then the sky's the limit. If you join a FAANG-style company, you're also looking at stock grants, and if you're joining a startup and get lucky with an exit, you could be a millionaire by your 40s. Now, not everyone will succeed, but if you're good at what you do, your success is nearly guaranteed. Take that from someone who's hired over two dozen developers in my career.

As a software engineer, you're solving problems with code. You review other people's code to catch errors, write new features, debug system crashes, sit in meetings where product managers explain what they want, and you explain why it's harder than they think. The work can vary significantly: consumer apps, infrastructure, financial software, and even AI. But fundamentally, you're translating business into working technology. The added perk is that you can work remotely from anywhere. Every industry needs software, so you can switch industries without switching careers. The downside is the interview process is genuinely stupid. Tech layoffs flood the market with identical resumes. Ageism after 40 is real, and you're also competing globally with developers who will work for a fraction of your salary. But again, a good software engineer never goes to waste.

Engineering has produced the highest median lifetime earnings of any degree for the last 40 years. Canadian graduates start at around 60K, but mid-career engineers average 100K, hitting 120 and 150 with specialization. Chemical engineers earn 15 to 20% more than mechanical engineers in Western Canada. The wealth comes from solving problems that cost companies millions of dollars. The degree is hard enough, and the licensing that follows also serves as a natural talent filter. Mechanical engineers design machines, car engines, HVAC systems, manufacturing equipment. Electrical engineers work on power systems and circuit design. Civil engineers design infrastructure like roads, bridges, water systems. Chemical engineers work in processes like refining oil, producing pharmaceuticals. You spend most of your time on CAD software, running simulations, and in meetings explaining to non-engineers why their ideas violate physics. The best path is to take up a 4-year engineering degree from an accredited program. And accreditation matters here for your professional engineering license, which you need for certain jobs and definitely need if you want to start your consulting firm and make big figures. Co-op programs are golden for these degrees. This is where you alternate school and work, so when you graduate, you already have one or even two years of experience. Engineers are recession-resistant because infrastructure and manufacturing don't stop during downturns. Skills also transfer across industries. A mechanical engineer can work in automotive or aerospace, medical devices, and even energy. There is satisfaction in seeing your designs get built. Career path is predictable with a clear salary increase. The downside is that the degree is genuinely difficult with high dropout rates. Entry-level work can also be tedious, checking calculations, and some jobs may require relocation and travel.

Finance majors hit median wages of 110K pretty quick in their career, with only 18% being underemployed. Canadian accounting graduates started around 60K, jumping to 80 to 140K with a CPA designation. The real story isn't the median here, it's the ceiling. Top 25% graduates at target schools can make 200K and plus at 23. Investment banking is the most lucrative. You're building financial models in Excel and you're creating pitch decks for M&A deals. You are expected to work 80 to 100-hour work weeks, but enormous salaries make up for it. I have a handful of friends who chose investment banking as their career path. I barely saw them for a few years, and now, 10 years after graduation, they all are sitting on multi-million dollar portfolios. Corporate finance is another track. It's all about forecasting budgets, analyzing capital investments, managing cash flows, and the best part is you do normal hours for good money. If you like more customer-facing roles, financial planning is all about helping individuals manage their wealth through tailored guidance and advice. All of these roles essentially require translating numbers into business insights. For investment banking, target schools matter. Otherwise, you need a really high GPA and strong resume because those roles are highly competitive. CFA certification is valuable for any finance professional, but can be brutal to complete fully. All three exams can take two to four years to complete. CPA in Canada shows an immediate 20 to 40K salary premium and is standard for many accounting roles. I know some may not like the sound of it, but the world needs finance people because the world runs on money. So, we do need some smart people who don't mind staring at numbers all day.

Registered nurses start at around 70 to 90K in Canada, but that's just the beginning. Nurse practitioners earn a median of 100K, jumping to 120 or 130K at the high end. As a nurse, you're providing direct patient care, administering medication, monitoring vitals, coordinating with doctors. The work is physical and can oftentimes be emotional. You're essentially functioning as a primary care provider, diagnosing conditions, prescribing medications, managing chronic diseases. Canadian NPs have significant autonomy and often serve as primary care, especially in rural areas. To get there, you can finish a 4-year bachelor's degree from a Canadian university and then register with your provincial regulatory body. Each province has separate registration requirements. For nurse practitioner, you'll need a master's in nursing with NP specialization, which requires two to three years of registered nursing experience before you can even apply. Total timeline for this career path is 7 to 9 years. Job security for this degree is bulletproof. Healthcare anywhere in the world is vital. Licenses transfer between provinces, so you can work anywhere. Night and weekend shifts is where nurses actually make the most money because many make over 100K with just strategic scheduling. Most hospital positions are also unionized, and they have strong benefits and pensions. The caveat for nursing degree programs is that they are brutally competitive, and the dropout rates are high. The work itself is also not easy. You do 12-hour shifts on your feet dealing with bodily fluids and suffering. Canada's healthcare system is stretched so thin that you are constantly short-staffed and overworked.

Data scientists earn median salaries of 100K and above in Canada, since companies realize more and more that they're drowning in data that they have no idea how to use. This degree mashes together computer science, statistics, and business, making you valuable to literally everyone who has data, which is pretty much everybody else these days. As a data analyst, you write code in Python or R to clean or manipulate data. And then you'll spend a lot of time cleaning it. You also build models to predict things like customer behavior, catch fraud, or send the next payload to the moon. Data science degrees are relatively new. A statistics or math degree with programming skills works just as well. Master's programs are popping up everywhere these days, but honestly, your portfolio matters more than your degree here. Can you prove that you've worked with real, messy data sets and built models that actually work? To do that, you must do Kaggle competitions, personal projects, analyzing public data, or make open-source contributions. All these can help you gain the experience to build your portfolio and get your next job. The work is intellectually engaging if you like puzzles. It's fully remote since you just need data access, and is broad enough that you can jump industries without starting over. You're also usually the smartest person in the room when it comes to data, which gives you influence.

With a median of 70 to 140K, this degree has produced an absurd number of successful people. Not because it teaches you specific job skills, but because economics gives you frameworks for understanding how the world actually works: where are the opportunities? What's overvalued? What's undervalued? Supply and demand. All that isn't theory; it's how everything in the world actually functions. The median economics grad does well because they end up everywhere: consulting firms analyzing market trends, finance companies valuing companies and managing investments, tech companies analyzing user behavior and optimizing pricing, government agencies developing policy. The unifying theme here is you're using data and economic frameworks to make resource allocation decisions that matter. Unlike data science, you're coding less, but rather thinking about how the world works. With an economics degree, math matters a lot: econometrics, statistics, calculus—those are all the critical tools, not just theory, and you need to enjoy them. It's not uncommon for economic majors to go to graduate school like MBA or law school. But this is where this degree is also versatile. It can help you get a solid foundation and then decide where you want to specialize later. Economics teaches you to think in systems and spot opportunities other people miss. The coursework isn't as brutal as engineering or hard sciences, so you might actually have a social life while studying. You'll understand money and markets better than 95% of people, which helps when you're building your own wealth. The downside is that the undergraduate economics doesn't really prepare you for a specific career the way that nursing or engineering does. And as a result, it doesn't guarantee you a high-paying life the same way that others do. To genuinely succeed in this degree, you need to supplement it with internships, developing practical skills, and specialization.

Math majors consistently rank to have strong salaries and impressively low unemployment rates. Canadian statisticians earn a median of 47 bucks an hour. Mathematicians pull up to 150K depending on specialization. Mathematical thinking is valuable everywhere. But here's the thing: most people genuinely can't do it. That scarcity is what pays the big bucks. Tech companies hire math majors for algorithms and machine learning. Finance firms want them for quantitative trading. Insurance companies need them for actuarial work. Government agencies also use them for cryptography and analysis. You're probably not doing pure mathematics research unless you go academic. And as a mathematician, you can be a data scientist or a quantitative analyst, actuary, operations researcher, or a software engineer. For all I know, many of these are high-paying jobs on their own. The math degree gives you problem-solving frameworks that work across basically any domain where numbers matter. So, if you're not ready to commit to a certain career like finance or technology, you can start with mathematics and figure stuff out later. If you get your mathematics degree and focus on applied math, statistics, or computational mathematics, you'll be set for life because these are the most foundational and transferable skills. Programming is absolutely essential. Most math majors do internships in finance, tech, or data science to get practical experience and make connections. Many go to graduate school or transition into computer science or finance master's programs to specialize. With math, you're developing genuinely rare skills that most people dislike or simply can't do. And that's your competitive advantage. The degree opens doors across industries because employers know if you can handle real mathematics, you can also handle real problems.

These degrees are genuinely hard. They require real skill development that you can't fake. They lead to careers where companies have serious money and expensive problems that they'll pay you all the money you want to solve. Computer scientists solve software problems. Engineers solve physical space problems. Finance majors solve money problems. Nurses save people's lives. Data scientists solve information problems. The more expensive the problem that you can solve, the more you get paid for it. It's that simple. To build a comfortable and successful life, it is important to develop rare, valuable skills that solve expensive problems that people are willing to pay for. Most develop common skills or skills that are easy to acquire and end up struggling financially their entire career. The degree that you choose right now determines which category you end up in for the next 40 years. So, choose wisely.
