Astronomers just confirmed a full-blown galaxy that existed when the universe was only 280 million years old. Its name is MOM-Z14, and it's currently the most distant galaxy ever discovered.
It has a red shift of 14.44, meaning we're seeing it as it was just 280 million years after the Big Bang. That's only about 2% of the current age of the universe.
What's shocking is how bright and well-developed it already is, much more luminous and chemically enriched than anyone expected this early. It belongs to a growing group of surprisingly mature galaxies that are challenging our models of how the first galaxies formed.
This one was first spotted in the cosmos field and confirmed with spectroscopy by the James Webb Space Telescope. Before Web, we didn't think galaxies this bright and structured could exist so close to the cosmic dawn.
