The 2030 Agenda 17 Sustainable Development Goals to transform our world. SDG 1 · No poverty. End poverty in all its forms everywhere.
More than 700 million people currently live in extreme poverty. Not only in developing countries but also the richest countries in the world, 30 million children grow in poverty. The poverty is more than just a lack of income and resources. It is one of the greatest obstacles preventing people from enjoying a decent living. It manifests itself as hunger, malnutrition, lack of decent housing, and limited access to basic services. It brings discrimination, social exclusion, and awareness about human rights.
The 2030 Agenda proposes actions to eradicate extreme poverty, increase social protection and coverage of the poor and the vulnerable, ensure equal rights to access financial services and basic services, appropriate technology, ownership and control over land and other forms of property and natural resources. For all this, we need resources, development cooperation, and programmes, and policies which pay attention to the question of gender equality because the majority of poor people are women.
End poverty is possible. We only need less than 1% of the yearly income of the richest countries in the world. It is a question of will, policy, and priority to achieve sustainability of the planet. Will we get involved?
