People are shocked by what American high school gym class looked like in the 1960s. This footage comes from one of the 4,000 US high schools that followed the Lassiiera physical education program, which JFK pushed as a national standard.
According to the Lassiiera physical education handbook from 1966, the minimum number of push-ups a student was expected to do was 16, and they were supposed to run a mile in at least 7 and 1/2 minutes. Considering most modern Americans struggled to complete even five push-ups, that's 16 rep minimum is honestly shocking.
The top group listed in the handbook was the blue team. And to qualify, students had to perform 12 handstand push-ups and at least 14 pull-ups, which is insanely impressive when you consider that one in six modern American children are obese.
It's wild to see how seriously fitness and health were taken in the 1960s and how even the president was pushing for higher physical education standards in schools.
