Pastor Caught Off Guard by Mormon Missionaries...Why Christians MUST Be Ready

Greg Sukert33:32

Transcription

Hey, how's it going, sir?

Good. How you doing?

Good.

How's it happening?

Not much. We uh I mean, I don't know if you you've seen us walking around. We're missionaries. We're Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. And we're here in the neighborhood today. We're sharing a really unique and important message. Um about how the Lord is called like a modern day Moses on the earth today. Is that some I guess do do you believe there to be a a modern day prophet on the earth today?

Did you see my sign? That's awesome. I actually Oh, no. I thought that was I saw it, but I didn't actually read it. So, [laughter]

That's awesome.

Yeah, that was awesome.

So, yeah, I'm actually a pastor in the area.

Really?

Yeah.

Do you know there's for a specific church or

Uh Yeah, it's uh central church in Collierville, Tennessee.

Not too familiar with

Okay. You guys are here in Olive Branch.

Yeah. Awesome.

So, there's other missionaries that are up there.

Okay.

Yeah. Well, how long you been doing that for?

Uh almost four years. Yeah. Wow, that is awesome.

Yeah. What about you guys? How how long have you been doing this?

We've been like full-time missionaries, you could say. I don't know how familiar are with like what we do. But we were called by this prophet of God to leave our homes and everything behind for two years. So, I'm from Utah. I'm from East Utah as well, but both from Utah. We're out here. We're sharing the restored gospel of Jesus Christ. So, we we both have been out here for a little while now. We're both coming up to the end of our two years doing this. Yeah. Not only, you know, and the incredible thing about is just like two years and then I'm done, right? All we're always be missionaries and representatives of the Savior our entire lives, right? As followers of Jesus Christ.

I bet you would agree.

We're continuing sharing the word and bringing others into Christ.

Yeah. How would you guys describe the gospel? Like what would you I'm not too familiar with how you would express it.

Yeah. So, I mean really we take what Jesus said, right? We we know that right the church of Jesus Christ the five of saints is set up the exact way that Jesus set up his church when he was on the earth right with 12 apostles the head apostle like stuff like that um as far as like the gospel um it's really there there's a ton that goes into it really but to break it down to like five five main steps is having faith right you can't have the rest of it doesn't matter if you don't have faith and faith being an action word or leads you to do things leads you to want to to be better you is repentance that second step

Uh and then trying to get closer to God, right? Repentance and and baptism. Um and we know that baptism is only is only half of half of that covenant or promise you make, right? Says in in the Bible and uh Christ is talking to Nicodemus um born of the water and of the spirit, right?

Mhm. And so we there's baptism and the gift of the Holy Ghost

and then enduring to the end which that's probably the thing that encompasses the most. There's other promises we make and other things we do but really trying to be the best disciple of Jesus Christ for the rest of rest of your life.

And so that's I guess our encumbent of the gospel.

Yeah. Do you guys know like the biggest differences between Mormonism and Christianity? Though I know Mormonism, you guys would probably include it in that umbrella of Christianity.

Oh yeah. Jesus Christ is central to everything we do. We represent him. We wear our name on his chest and our end goal is to become Christlike. Yeah.

To gain his attributes, his love, to treat others just as he taught. Yeah. And to do those things. So

yeah. Now we the the world likes to separate us because of that because of false interpretations and understandings that Jesus Christ is completely central to everything to do.

You know he is the gospel of Jesus Christ.

I know you carry the Book of Mormon but you don't carry

You have the Okay. You do King James. Okay.

We were love rever the Bible the word of God. I read out of it every day and I I know it's the word of God.

Yeah. So

so why why do you think that like Protestant Christians reject the Book of Mormon as divine revelation?

That's a great question. I don't know a ton about I guess per se particular Protestant Christians or or other a ton of other Christian faiths. Um but from my interpretation or my perspective, I honestly think they haven't given it a fair chance. they have it they're they're reading it to try to find something is wrong with it.

Um whether that whether instead of reading it with with an open heart and open open mind uh and trying to to learn more about Christ, brother uh because you could you could read the Bible thinking, "Oh, this book's terrible." Right? And you're not going to gain as much as you really could from it if you're if you if you have a closed mind. you think there's like some kind of stigma or okay there's a lot of false you know interpretation about what we believe right and that's with anyone right we get judged not only just us as missionaries but think of it as you know mankind we mankind is quick to judge the natural man is quick to judge to think wrongfully of others to accuse things of things maybe they haven't done

and so we we come across that commonly is that there's a lot of false understanding about the Book of Mormon people think that we've replaced it with the Bible and that's not the case

or they think it's another translation of the Bible and that's just like common misunderstandings.

Yeah.

And so that's why we're out here um in full force is sharing.

Do you guys accept the Quran?

We do not. No.

Why?

So I could be wrong. I haven't read the Quran, but if I'm correct, the Quran speaks of Jesus Christ, but it considers him kind of as a prophet,

not as a savior.

Yeah. We would

they would say he's a savior as a prophet. That's that's how Muslims would

Okay. I guess can you explain that a little more because that I don't know ex exactly what that could mean right seder as a prophet like

yeah well I'm just saying that that's the you know Muslims they believe that the Quran is a third book that's inspired uh similarly to you guys believe the Book of Mormon is a third book that's inspired um I think the reason Protestant Christians reject both of those the Quran and the Book of Mormon is because God's word will never contradict what God has already revealed

and what I understand and you can correct me if I'm wrong. So I'm just share with you,

you know, I'm here to learn.

We respect it.

Yeah. So and it's a joy to be able to talk through this with you guys. So um it's my understanding that you guys the Book of Mormon actually says there's like three layers of heaven, right? There's like the highest, the middle, the lowest,

the highest uh which is given to the most devout and faithful to the the temple, right? Um and what do you call the practices that you have to go through

like ordinances

ordinances work temples ordinances. Um so those who do follow the ordinances and achieve the highest you could say level of salvation uh are to become gods someday. Is that correct?

Let me explain it from a different perspective.

Yeah. So and the Book of Mormon actually teaches you all about the three kingdoms of glory we refer to about really interesting. A lot of that actually comes out of things taught in the Bible. Um, you know, the saber speaks of, you know, many mansions of his father. Paul speaks of bodies, terrestrial, bodies, celestial, other things like that.

Well, well, Revelation only talks about like Revelation 22, the new heavens, the new earth.

Yeah.

Um, there's only one new heavens, only one new earth. And it says that all the righteous will sing the song of the lamb in the new heavens and new earth when Christ comes to establish his kingdom. So, it seems like there's only one esqueological state where all of creation is remade. And that's what Romans 8 says that right now creation groans. And why does creation groans? Because we live in a fallen world and we're awaiting the restoration of all things. Um, but yeah, that being said, help me understand the God component because that is the one where, you know, the Bible's very clear. Um, yeah, there's only one God. You know, Ezekiel says uh in in in the book of Ezekiel, the Lord repeats again and again that I am the Lord and beside me there is no other. So given that understanding of there can only be one God. There can only be one supreme being who's omnipotent, you know, he's all powerful, he's omnipresent, he's he knows all things. How can how can finite man then become a god in your guys's understanding?

I think it's there's a lot more to it and I we wouldn't be able to explain all of it here on your tour today. I like to think about it is if you want to learn trigonometry, you got to first go through the basics of math.

Um and so with that, I think there's different interpretations. So I know you're speaking of I guess you would you consider yourself to be a believer or of the trinity?

Oh yeah. Father, son, spirit. Yeah.

So you believe they're like one individual?

Three three persons, one God.

Okay.

So there's only one God, but he's triune and that's what sets him apart from. So we don't Christians don't believe in polytheism, which is many gods. That would be like the Hindu faith where they have like gods that represent

Everything. Yeah. sun god, moon god, you know, it's super common in like Greek philosophy and Egyptian philosophy and uh throughout human history. But Christians are not polytheistic. We believe there's one God who eternally exists as three persons, father, son, and spirit, which is reflected in the great commission, which you guys

still teach all nations baptizing the name of father, son, and the holy spirit. Right? But that doesn't take away from Deuteronomy 6 where the Lord is saying here. O Israel, the Lord your God is one. And also Exodus 20, right? You shall have no other gods before me, right? You shall not make a great name.

I think I think where we I maybe maybe we don't maybe I'm misinterpreting what you're saying, but where we so we call it the godhead, right? Where we know there are three different beings. Um, but when it says like one, they're one, right? And we we see as one purpose, right? So, say like us three, right? We're three different beings, but we're going to go build a fence. We all can't dig holes. We all three because there would just be a bunch of holes, right? Nothing. So, we're doing different things, but it's all to get this fence built, if that makes sense. And so, that's how we see the Godhead, right? We have the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost. They have different roles, but they're that that they have that one goal in mind and that respect. Yeah.

Yeah. I think where we would differ is that there's one being, but that one being is three persons. So there's only one that holds the uh the nature of God. But that but God's nature belongs to three persons. The father, the son, and the spirit. So there's only one nature of God. There's only one God, divine being, but there are three persons that encompass that singular divine being. And that's how we make sense with passages like first Peter where it says, you know, we are saved according to the fornowledge of God the father in the sanctification of the spirit for obedience to Jesus Christ. Um, where we're acknowledging that that God is triune in nature. So there's being of God, but within that one being as three persons. I think that's where we would respectfully disagree. I think um you know we believe that to be separate individuals and separate beings and a lot of that comes through

what do you do with like Deuteronomy 6 though like here O Israel the Lord your God is one

well so we would see the interpretation of one to be different that they're one in purpose and like for like for example if you go to like John 17 what Jesus Christ is praying to the father he speaks about how him and the father are one and that he's praying that the apostles as well as us can be one with Jesus Christ just like how he's one with the father. And so he's not saying that him and the father are one, but he's inviting us to be one in purpose, in faith, unity with them.

But Colossians 1 says that Jesus is the image of the invisible God, singular. It doesn't say he's another God. You don't see um because that would that would that would essentially be polytheism, right? Where you have God the Father who's a God. You have God the Son who's a God. And you have God the Spirit who's a God. And so if you have three different gods, that's actually polytheism. That's that's multiple gods rather than the declaration of scripture is that there's only one lord. There's only one god and that beside him there is no other. So like how do you like would you consider yourself to be a polytheist where you believe in three different three different gods?

I don't know what the proper term would be for it to be honest. Jess

Yeah. Um, and that's, you know, we could sit here all day, right, and go through different scriptures and debate and I don't think we'd get anywhere, right? Either one of us. Um, and so what we're here to do, our entire purpose at the end of the day as oldtime representatives and missionaries is to invite people um to prayerfully study the Book of Mormon to ask Heavenly Father with a true and open heart with real intent if it's true. Just like how I came to know the Bible was true. I actually read the Book of Mormon once uh ago when I was younger without real intent. I read it just to say I checked the box. I read the Book of Mormon. I didn't I read it every night and I finished the book and I didn't know it was true. I didn't know because I hadn't read it with a real intent actually wanting to know if it was true. And that's where um I came to know I said, "Okay, I want to know if this book's true or not." Because there's no middle ground with the Book of Mormon. It's either true or it's completely wrong.

Yeah.

At the end of the day, that's the nature of all things. So that's yours.

Like the Church of Jesus Christ of Larry says it hangs on that, right? If you look at like I kind of got an arch here, but like a keystone, right? The Book of Mormon is is holding literally everything together.

Like say it's it's true or it's not.

Yeah. Well, and that's why you know the in the first, second, third, fourth, fifth centuries, you had so many writings that claimed to be from God. the the Quran is claimed to be divine writings, you know, of this of the sixth century AD. Um, so the the question we have to ask is how do we know what's actually true? Because I agree with you. It's either true,

right?

It's not.

And that's I was actually just going to just going to say that how do we know it's true, right? What's I guess we we we can agree that this is true, right? The Bible. And so let's you

the Bible's true. Yeah. Yeah. Can you John 17 sanctify them by your word your word is true.

Okay. Yeah.

And so this is this coming from the Bible and we tell this to ever right. And so this is in James chapter 1. Um and it said this is verse 5. It says if any of you lack wisdom let him ask of God that give it to all men libery and araidth not and it shall be given him.

Right? So if you got a question, if you lack wisdom, right? Then go to the person who is this the ultimate source of knowledge, right? God.

And how we do that? We pray, right? Um

and so that's what we tell everyone, right? He said, "Our purpose is to invite, not to convince, not to convince you that the book of M is true."

Yeah.

Right. If you So you'd never been outside and I came in, I was like, "Hey dude, the sky is green." You're like, "Okay." Yeah.

Because you'd never seen it, right? But until you take that action, until you get up and you go outside and you look, you would believe it's green.

Yeah.

Right. And so that's what that's what we do. We we say, "Hey, look, we know that the the Book of Mormon is true and can change your life and coincides um with the Bible." Yeah.

Right.

But and then we invite you, we say, "We don't want you to believe us. We want you to get a testimony of it for yourself." And we invite people to pray about it.

And that comes through the Holy Ghost, the power of the Holy Ghost.

Right. Well, that's Yeah. So the the thing with that is that you know first John says to test every spirit to see if it is from God. And I think one of the things that scripture communicates clearly and I think you guys would agree with this is there are

there's a good spirit right the Holy Spirit would agree with that

and there are bad spirits. We've got Satan we've got demons and demons know how to give people spiritual experiences. I think about like there are people are you familiar with like the progressive religion camp where people say that God actually um came to them in a in a vision and said that it's okay for Christians to be gay. Have you ever heard that before?

I've heard things like that.

Yeah. But they're basically saying I had this experience that told me, you know, God said this is okay. Um, and so, but we would say, yeah, that's not right because that's why because that's contradictory to God's word where he's very clear that in Genesis, God made them male and female. Therefore, a father shall leave his or therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and shall hold fast his wife and become one flesh. And so we we can actually look to the text and say, "Oh, no matter how many times someone says like this is from God because of their own experience, they a warm and fuzzy feeling or you know they just felt it was right like they just their heart was burning that it was right." We can actually go to the text and and measure is that a good spiritual experience or is that a a bad spiritual experience. Um, and the thing with the the the Book of Mormon, I think that a lot of people, you know, struggle with is in Matthew 16 is amazing. I would encourage you to read that.

I love Matthew.

Matthew. Yeah. Matthew's one of my favorite. Yeah. So, Matthew 16, uh, you remember what Jesus says after Peter's confession that Peter upon you, I will build my church?

That's rock.

That's right. That's right. Uh, and that's what Peter actually means. The word Petrus, it's a Greek word that means rock. And um Jesus says that but then he says about the church that that nothing will prevail against the church like not even the gates of hell shall prevail against her. And so the very idea of the Book of Mormon is that the true church has been lost until you know the the 1800s and then the true church was restored and found and but it was basically gone. like the light switches were off until Joseph Smith received revelation from the prophet Moroni and and then you know Christianity was restored but that's in direct contradiction to what Jesus says he says the lights will never go off that actually the gates of hell will not prevail against her not because humanity is not sinful and doesn't fall in the error because we do but because of the very nature of who Jesus is that he's a Lord who pres who preserves his church which is why Ephesians 5 talks about Jesus as the head and the church is the bride and the head, the groom is never going to let his his bride die. But the whole premise of the Book of Mormon is that the bride died and did not come back to life, was not resurrected in that sense until Joseph Smith came to restore the true church.

Do you see like how that's like problematic?

Yeah. And we would interpret that different as well. You know, I think a lot of Paul's writings have about Paul, his warning that there's going to be a falling away, you know, all these different things. And we could debate that all day. Um, you know, with you when we respect you. We really do.

We appreciate you. You're minister. That's why I think we're both have more or less the same goal. We see the world's crazy and we're trying to get

Oh, yeah. [laughter] Going on. Well, and I what I admire about you is that you believe, you know, you believe you have the truth, right? And you're but you're you don't just believe it. You want to declare it to others. And I think that's that's important. If we if we think we have a grasp on what the truth is, that Jesus is the way, the truth, and the life, how could we not go and share that with others? But at the same time, you know, we can be persuaded, I would say, uh, to believe that something is true when it's not. And I think about passages like Jude. Jude talks about people entering the church, creeping in unnoticed. Um, and Jude then calls the church, hey, you've got to contend for the faith once for all delivered to the saints. And so Jude really says there's one faith. But here's what's remarkable is when the church was born right at Pentecost in the first century after the ascension of Christ, >> the the writings that were given to the church at that point were then the New Testament writings which then closed with, you know, Revelation and John and uh with the apostle John in 90 AD. And so that then becomes this that from Genesis to Revelation becomes the faith that is once for all delivered to the saints. It's these are the writings by which we're to test all other writings. And so what the Book of Mormon says is actually well, the early church lacked revelation that the true church needed, right? Because they're they're actually saying that there's this third form of revelation and the early church didn't have that form of revelation. So then but but then Judah is saying contend for the faith once we're all delivered to the saints. Well, how could the how could the more the Book of Mormon be a part of the faith once we're all delivered to the saints if it wasn't delivered to the saints at that time? You get what I'm saying?

Yeah.

I guess. Have you read the Book of Mormon before?

I have. Yeah. And I I struggle with with things on like the the works based stuff that it has in there about. You're saved after all that you can do. Um, I struggle with the Mormon doctrines that finite man can become a God someday because the very nature of being God is that you're uh uncreated, right? Genesis says that in the beginning, God was in the beginning and he spoke all of creation into existence. Like no one created God. He's eternal. He He's the one who was and is and is to come. Well, humanity, we're created, right? So then we're a finite being. But but then when when uh you know latter- day saint doctrine says well then finite a finite being can become an infinite being well that's a contradiction of terms because to be infinite is to have no beginning but you and I have a beginning

that's where we would disagree on beliefs as well is that we would yeah our physical bodies were created here on earth but our spirits we have spirit body our soul soul sometimes a virtue of the soul actually existed from the very beginning to end and

but then you have what you're doing is you're given the quality of eternality which belongs to God because God is the only one that's communicated to be the one who was and is and is to come. Adam it doesn't. So you you've read the Genesis account. Adam is God forms him from the dust and actually says that God then breathes the breath of life into Adam. So then

right but that's not it's it's a created act where Adam then comes into being. It doesn't actually say that Adam Adam who already existed enters into the physical space. It's it's Adam is born like he's created for the first time. And that's what it means to be God's creation. Because if we're not God's creation, like if God didn't make us, if we didn't have a starting point, if we are eternal, if we have eternal souls, that gives us the same quality of God, that we are also the one who was and is and is to come. But the Bible only talks about one being having that quality, and that's the true and living God as he's revealed himself in scripture. So the whole idea that our spirits are eternal is not

go back on scriptures and stuff like that. I have stuff I could share but you know we don't want to waste our time here today and we don't want to waste your time. We know you've taken time to meet with us and to step outside to us. We really appreciate that.

Hey look I don't think anything that is discussing the nature of truth is a waste of time you know contrary to

what [snorts] you're saying. Yeah.

Yeah. No for sure.

We should be we should be seekers of the truth. And if I'm saying, hey, I think this is an error, you know, that that this is actually a deviation from what God has already revealed, that is that's something that should be worth considering, knowing that none of us are perfect and all of us fall into error. We

all fall short.

And and you know, Muslims, they truly believe, think about the Muslims at 911. They truly believe that they were giving their lives for God. But you would would you say that they were giving their lives really for the true and living God based on what they were doing to murder all those people you know with the act of 911? I would say no. But they truly believed it and they could not be persuaded otherwise. And that just shows the deceitfulness of the human heart

where you know we can we can fall into error. And so um I do think the discussion of what is the nature of truth is so important. So I don't think this time is wasted all that to say.

Yeah. No for sure. For sure. We're I wouldn't say I wouldn't say that either. arrive because this is what we're here to do. We're um we do have some other other appointments we do have to get to. But um like I said, we we I actually really admire admire you for the knowledge you do have, right? Because I can tell you put a lot of lot of effort and a lot of time into it, right? And and um right as we're only like 20 21, right? You've had obviously a lot more life experience than us.

31. So I've got 10 more years on you guys. Yep. So

um, but we, uh, like we said, we I think ultimately have the same goal. You as a minister, us as missionaries, we're just trying to help people draw closer to Jesus Christ.

Yeah.

And, and, um, obviously truth is truth no matter where it comes from, right? Um, and we both can agree that the Bible the Bible is true. And so, I just we just know of of the power of of the message of the Book of Mormon. I would encourage you, right, to like said you've read it, but maybe I don't know what what you went into it looking like, but maybe give it a try with an open heart.

Read at it from looking for the perspective of what can I learn about Jesus Christ. If you look at it from the intent of know what what faults can I find, you know, what this and that, you're not going to get to know if it's true or not. Just like how I read it without real intent, yet I know it was true for that. But when I read it looking for principles and teachings about Jesus Christ I can apply in my life that helped me to draw closer to him. That's when I came to know over time that it was true. I felt the fruits of the spirit and I received that confirming witness by the power of the Holy Ghost that is true. Nothing will change that.

But so what would you do if someone tells told you like hey you got to read the book of Quran with um you know, the the praying for God to reveal the truth to you. Do you think there's any possibility that the Quran in any way, shape, or form could become seen by you as divine revelation?

I don't really know.

If someone said the same thing that you just said, like, hey, just really read it. Really ask God,

would you? I think

I'd have to go with go off of the the experiences and and the the times that I've felt the spirit, right? And maybe maybe I'll go and read. I think learning about other religions is is super interesting to me. So, At some point I probably will end up reading some of it just out of curiosity.

Yeah.

Um, but and I and I definitely I definitely would pray about it for sure because um counseling with God is probably the most important thing you can do with things in life, right? With with said um if you have a question or you lack that wisdom. Um and so I definitely would pray about it, but I would go off of what I know is true, right? What this tells me the spirit feels like and my my past experiences with the spirit. And you would use what you know to be true, right, to ultimately measure against what you're hearing.

Exactly.

Right. So if if you you had mentioned that the Quran said that that Jesus is simply a prophet, right? That he's not actually

That's what was my understanding of 100%.

That is right. The the Quran actually says that you are a cursed if you think that Jesus died on the cross.

Okay. But then I would completely disagree that.

Right. Because because you're holding to what you think to be divine revelation, right? And because what you see on what you see in that book, it causes you to reject any any of the claims of any other book.

I could say the same thing for the Bible, right? The Bible speaks of the crucifixion of Christ,

right? That's what I'm saying. So, yeah, Book of Mormon aside, but now let's measure the Book of Mormon against the Bible. You know, the Bible says that there's only one God, but the Book of Mormon and Mormon theology says we can become gods. Um, the Bible says that humanity was created, that we're actually made in the image of God. Doesn't say we eternally existed, that only in the beginning was God. God's the only one who's eternal. But but you're saying that man was eternal that we had spirit.

That's where I know disagree as well is that in the Bible I've come to know these truths. I've read both books and I cannot find one contradiction.

But that is that is a contradiction that that God created man in his image, male and female. But you're saying that man eternally existed.

I Yeah. And that's because I take I think we have different interpretations of certain passages of scripture in the Bible.

But created means come into being. that that in the beginning was the word and there was nothing else. It was just the word, right? That's John 1. That's Genesis. But you're saying that man existed before all of creation. But that's to ascribe divine qualities to man because the Bible says that only God existed prior to creation. In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. So we weren't around, you know, according to Genesis, according to John. So I So that being said, like, yeah, I know this. I know this to be true because I know that Genesis to Revelation is true. I cannot accept the Book of Mormon. And one more passage that because I know you guys got to go that I would encourage you to read uh Galatians 6 or Galatians 1, especially chapters like 6 through or verses 6 through 10

because you know what?

Yeah, we hear this all the time. Do you hear this all the time where Paul, he warns

that if even an angel comes to you and preaches to a different gospel, a different Christ, a different

God, that we that they are to be accursed. And I truly do think that is what the Latter-day Saint faith is. It's preaching another gospel, the the gospel, salvation by grace through faith in Christ as he's revealed in scripture for God's glory. And the Book of Mormon says, "No, you're saved by works. You're you can become a God. That's not true.

You always existed

by works." And that's where we're going to disagree. And I know we could sit here all day and disagree on different things. Uh I don't want this conversation to ever become contentious because that's not what we're about.

We're all about representing the Savior and showing him the

You should be able to go back and sort though and be out at least.
