In May 2018, Donald Trump made a decision that brought the Middle East to the brink of war. And a dead man's Bible footnote made him do it.
Moving the US embassy to Jerusalem, withdrawing from the Iran nuclear deal, assassinating Iran's top general. Each decision backed by prophecy. The connection between a convicted con man's 1909 Bible footnotes and 21st century American foreign policy is not conspiracy. It is documented history. And Jesus, whose name is invoked to justify all of it, never said a single word that supports what is being done in his name. Not one.

Christian Zionism has three core claims. Every one of them traces back to a single source. And that source is not Jesus. It is not the apostles. It is one man. They use Genesis 12:3 as the foundation. But God spoke those words to Abraham personally 3,000 years before the modern state of Israel existed. Applying a covenant made with a wandering patriarch in 2000 BC to a modern nuclear armed nation state is not theology. It is politics dressed in scripture.
The man who built this entire theological system was not a prophet. He was John Nelson Darby, an Anglo-Irish Anglican priest who never once visited Israel. From the fog of 1840s London, Darby created a complete prophetic timeline for a political entity that would not exist for another 108 years. 1840, Darby writes, "Israel must be literally restored before Christ can return." It had never been taught in 1,800 years of church history. Not once. From Darby's 1840 desk to Trump's 2018 Oval Office, the chain of influence is unbroken, documented, and devastating in its geopolitical implications. And through all of it, Jesus's actual words on these matters were quietly set aside. We are going to restore them today. All of them.
1909. The most dangerous Bible ever printed rolls off Oxford University Press. Not because of what it contains, but because of what surrounds the scripture. The footnotes take up onethird of every page. They look like scholarship. They read like commentary, but they are Darby's doctrine presented as objective biblical fact. Cyrus Ingerson Scoffield convicted of forgery, abandoned his wife and children, disappeared with other men's money. Then he found religion and a publisher. The Kansas City Daily Journal, 1879. Scoffield, convicted of criminal forgery. His first ministry was built on stolen money, his second on stolen theology.
Oxford University Press gave Scofield's footnotes the single most powerful endorsement available, the Oxford name on the cover. Credibility bought, not earned. His Isaiah 11 footnote turns a spiritual promise into a real estate deed. His Romans 11 footnote turns a spiritual salvation into an ethnic entitlement. Scripture says neither. By 1930, Scofield system had captured Moody Bible Institute and Dallas Theological Seminary, the two institutions that trained an entire generation of American pastors. Every pastor who graduated from those seminaries carried Scoffield's footnotes into their pulpits believing they were preaching scripture. They were preaching Derby. Derby. Scofield. The seminaries. Billy Graham preached to 215 million people across 185 countries. He carried Darby's dispensationalism into every crusade. The doctrine became mainstream Christianity. 1970 Hal Lindseay publishes the late great planet Earth. 28 million copies sold. Darby's Footnote Theology becomes a best-selling pop culture prophecy machine. Pat Robertson, Jerry Fwell, Jimmy Swagert, the televangelists of the 1980s turned Scoffield's footnotes into prime time television, 20 million households per week. In 1980, Jerry Fwell founded the moral majority, fusing evangelical dispensationalism with Republican politics. 4 million members. Reagan wins the White House. Reagan publicly stated he believed he was living in the last days. His interior secretary, James Watt, told Congress environmental protection was pointless. Jesus was returning soon. By 1994, Ralph Reed's Christian Coalition distributed 33 million voter guides. Priority one, unconditional support for Israel. Scofield's footnote had become election strategy.
January 2017, evangelical advisers gather in the Oval Office. Among them, dispensationalists who believe a Jerusalem embassy will accelerate biblical prophecy. Trump listens. Three men, one doctrine. Donald Trump needed the evangelical vote. Netanyahu needed American cover. John Haggy provided the theological justification for both. John Hegy, founder of Christians United for Israel, 10 million members. He preaches that a war with Iran is not a catastrophe to avoid. It is a prophecy to fulfill. In Jerusalem Countdown, Hegy argues a military strike on Iran is divinely mandated precondition for Christ's return. This book was on desks in Washington, DC, December 6th, 2017. Trump recognizes Jerusalem as Israel's capital. Every US president since 1995 had the legal authority to do this. None did until the evangelical base demanded it. The same week, Palestinians were killed in protests over the decision. American evangelical churches hosted celebration services. Two completely different realities of the same event.
May 8th, 2018. Trump withdraws from the Iran nuclear deal. Every US ally opposed it. Every military analyst warned against it. The evangelical base celebrated it. January 3rd, 2020. General Kasim Solmani, Iran's most powerful military figure, assassinated by US drone strike. The evangelical right erupted in praise. Prophecy, they said, fulfilled. Dispensationalists identify Iran as biblical Persia in Ezekiel 38, a nation destined for divine judgment. For them, conflict with Iran is not geopolitics. It is scripture unfolding.
Everything you just heard was built by men. Now, we go to what Jesus actually said, his exact words, and they demolish the entire structure. Do not leave.
John 18:36 Jesus is standing before the Roman governor of the most contested land on earth and he says, "My kingdom is not of this world." Full stop. Christian Zionism is built on a physical political kingdom for Israel in Jerusalem. Jesus explicitly, directly, unambiguously rejected that vision. Who do you believe?
Luke 17:21 The Pharisees asked Jesus when God's kingdom is coming. His answer, "You cannot observe it coming. It is within you. Not in Jerusalem, not in Israel, within."
Matthew 5:9. Blessed are the peacemakers, not the war enablers, not the Iran sanction supporters, not the embassy movers, the peacemakers. Jesus said it.
Matthew 26:52. When his own disciple drew a sword to defend him, Jesus told him to put it away. The Prince of Peace commanded no military action ever. Jesus healed a Roman soldier's servant, praised a Samaritan, spoke to a Cyrophenician woman. His ministry crossed every ethnic and national boundary Darby tried to rebuild.
Galatians 3:28, Paul annihilates ethnic theological hierarchy in one verse. There is no separate divine plan for Israel and the church. There is one body. Darby lied.
Persia, modern Iran, appears 35 times in the Old Testament. In most of those appearances, Persia is not God's enemy. Persia is God's instrument. Isaiah 45:1 God calls Cyrus, the Persian king, his anointed, the same Hebrew word used for Messiah, a Persian, not an Israelite, God's anointed deliverer. Cyrus the Great conquered Babylon in 539 BC and immediately freed the Jewish captives, funding the rebuilding of the temple in Jerusalem out of his own treasury. Ezra 1:1 God stirred up the spirit of Cyrus, king of Persia, to rebuild Jerusalem. The very nation being targeted for war today is the nation God used to restore Israel. Reddit, the same nation that God used to save Israel in the Bible is now the nation American evangelicals want bombed to trigger prophecy. Explain that with scripture. You cannot.
Micah 4:3. The biblical vision for the nations is disarmament, not preemptive war. Plowshares, not missiles. This is the prophetic vision Scoffield system replaced. 60 million Iranians, 60 million image bearers of God according to Genesis 1:27. Not pieces on a prophetic chessboard. Human beings made in God's image.
The next eight scenes are the ones they will try to silence. The political money trail, the names, the amounts, the proof. You need to see all of it. Stay.
Apac spent $14.9 million in the 2022 election cycle backing pro-Israel candidates. But the theological permission structure that makes it acceptable, that came from Scofield. Christians United for Israel annual lobbying event in Washington DC draws members of Congress as featured speakers. Theology and legislation in the same room every year. The United States sends $3.8 billion in military aid to Israel annually. The political will to maintain that figure is sustained in significant part by evangelical dispensationalist voters. Mike Pence, vice president, openly dispensationalist. He stated the Jerusalem embassy move fulfilled biblical prophecy. A sitting VP setting foreign policy by Darby's timeline. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo told CBN News he believed he might be living out an Esther moment, placed in office for a divine purpose regarding Israel and Iran. the top diplomat, Darby's disciple.
The doctrine that sends young soldiers to die in prophetic wars also fills the offering plates of men who fly private. The congregation pays twice in money and blood. Somewhere between Darby's 1830 study and today's megaurch stage, the Jesus who said, "Love your enemies," became the mascot for military action against them.
Luke 6:27. Love your enemies. Iranians are not your enemies. They are your mission field. Jesus did not say sanction them, bomb them, or build doctrine to justify their destruction.
The Epistle of Barnabas written within 40 years of the apostles explicitly states the Abrahamic covenant belongs to believers not ethnic Israel. No Christian Zionism not once. Justin Martyr 150 AD in dialogue with Trifo he writes the new Jerusalem is the church. The promises to Abraham are fulfilled spiritually. No ethnic land covenant remains. Origin 185 AD. The promises of land in the Old Testament are fulfilled in Christ, not in a future political state. He wrote this 1,763 years before Israel was established. Augustine of Hippo 400 AD, the most influential theologian in Christian history, wrote against a literal earthly kingdom, against ethnic Israel as prophetic center, against everything Darby taught. Every major theologian for 1,800 years taught that the church inherited the covenantal promises. Darby did not discover a lost truth. He invented a new one.
Martin Luther's response to Islamic nations was evangelism, not prophetic warfare. John Calvin never once taught that supporting a Jewish state was a Christian obligation. John Wesley preached to the poor, fought slavery, and planted churches across Britain and America. He never once mentioned a prophetic role for a modern nation state of Israel.
The final eight scenes, the verdict. What you do with this, what Jesus actually commands his church to do right now. Do not turn this off. This is where it matters most.
Romans 12:18. As far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone. Not everyone except Iran. Not everyone except Persia. Everyone. That is your mandate. Iran has one of the fastest growing underground church movements on earth. Iranian Christians are your brothers and sisters. They do not need bombs. They need your prayers.
2 Chronicles 7:14 is quoted constantly in American evangelical culture. But notice, God doesn't call Israel to repentance here. He calls my people, the church, you. Now, the prophetic act God requires is not moving an embassy. It is not sanctioning Iran. It is the church on its knees, turning from Darby's nationalism back to Christ's kingdom. The church was never meant to be divided by nationalism, ethnicity, or geopolitics. It was meant to hold the same book together and read the same words from the same Jesus.
If you have believed the rapture doctrine and Christian Zionism your whole life, this is not an attack on your faith. Your faith is not the problem. The footnotes are the problem. Pick up your Bible without Scofield's footnotes. Read Matthew 5:24 and 26. Read John 17 and 18. Read Romans 12. Let Jesus speak without Darby translating. He sounds nothing like the news.
