They Expect You To Beg For Their Approval... Do This Instead! | Powerful Motivation

Growth Mindset21:35

You know what the problem is with most people today? They're walking around with their hands out begging for scraps of attention, crumbs of approval, and leftovers of love. They've forgotten something fundamental about being human. Something that separates the lions from the sheep, the kings from the peasants, the free from the enslaved. They've forgotten that they don't owe nobody nothing, and nobody owes them nothing either.

Let me tell you something right now, and I want you to listen with every fiber of your being because this might be the most important thing you hear today. You came into this world alone, and you're going to leave this world alone. Everything in between, every relationship, every friendship, every handshake, every hug, that's all bonus material. That's all extra credit. >> [music] >> The main course, the main event, the starring role of your life, that's you.

Now, I'm not talking about being mean. I'm not talking about being cruel or heartless, or walking around like you're better than everybody else. No, no, no. What I'm talking about is something far more powerful. Something far more liberating. Something that will change the entire trajectory of your existence. I'm talking about self-respect so deep, so unshakable, that it becomes your foundation. I'm talking about validation so complete within yourself, that you don't need to go fishing for compliments in other people's ponds.

You see, when you learn to act like you owe nobody anything, something magical happens. You stop walking around like you're carrying a debt you can't pay. You stop apologizing for taking up space in this world. You stop shrinking yourself to make other people comfortable. And most importantly, you stop giving your power away to people who don't even know what to do with it.

Maya Angelou once said, "If you don't like something, change it. >> [music] >> If you can't change it, change your attitude." But here's what she didn't say and what I'm going to tell you right now. Before you can change anything external, you've got to change something internal. >> [music] >> You've got to change the relationship you have with yourself. You've got to stop treating yourself like you're a beggar in your own life.

Think about it. How many times have you compromised your values because you were afraid someone might not like you? How many times have you said yes when every cell in your body was screaming no? How many times have you stayed in situations, relationships, jobs, friendships that were sucking the life out of you because you were afraid of being alone? How many times have you dimmed your light because someone else couldn't handle your brightness? That stops today. That stops right now. That stops with you reading these words and making a decision that your self-respect is not negotiable. Your peace of mind is not for sale. Your dignity is not up for auction.

When I say act like you owe nobody anything, I'm talking about understanding that your existence doesn't require anyone else's approval. You don't need permission to be yourself. You don't need a committee to validate your dreams. You don't need a board of directors to approve your happiness. You are a complete person, a whole person, >> [music] >> a valuable person all by yourself.

But here's where people get it twisted. They think this means you don't care about anybody, that you don't love anybody, that you don't invest in relationships. That's not what this is about. This is about loving from a position of strength, not weakness. This is about giving because you choose to, not because you have to. This is about building relationships from a foundation of self-respect, not desperation.

Eleanor Roosevelt said, "No one can make you feel inferior >> [music] >> without your consent." Let that marinate for a minute. Nobody can make you feel small unless you give them permission. Nobody can make you feel unworthy unless you hand them the keys to your self-esteem. >> [music] >> Nobody can make you feel like you're not enough unless you agree with them.

So, why do we keep giving people permission to make us feel less than? Why do we keep handing over the keys to our happiness to people who haven't earned them? Why do we keep seeking validation >> [music] >> from people who can't even validate themselves? It's because we've been conditioned to believe >> [music] >> that our worth comes from outside sources. We've been programmed to think that we need other people's approval to feel good about ourselves. We've been taught that being alone means being lonely. That independence means isolation. That self-reliance means selfishness. But, that's all lies. Those are stories that keep you small, keep you dependent, >> [music] >> keep you seeking instead of finding. Keep you asking instead of knowing.

The truth is this, you are enough. Right now, as you are, with all your flaws and imperfections and mistakes and regrets, you are enough. You don't need to add anything to yourself to be worthy of love, respect, and happiness. You don't need to subtract anything from yourself to be acceptable. You are complete.

When you truly understand this, when you really get this deep in your bones, you stop begging people to stay. You stop chasing people who are walking away. You stop trying to convince people of your value. You stop performing for people's attention. You start operating from a place of abundance instead of scarcity. From wholeness instead of brokenness.

Albert Einstein once said, "Try not to become a person of success, but >> [snorts] >> rather try to become a person of value." But I'm going to take that a step further. Don't just try to become a person of value, recognize that you already are a person of value. The value is already there. It's been there since the day you were born. It's not something you earn. It's something you acknowledge.

Let me tell you what happens when you start living this way. When you stop seeking validation from others, >> [music] >> you start finding validation within yourself. When you stop begging people to stay, you start attracting people who want to be there. When you stop compromising your values for acceptance, you start attracting people who accept your values. >> [music] >> When you stop apologizing for who you are, you start celebrating who you are.

This doesn't mean you become arrogant or closed off or unwilling to grow. Growth is different from groveling. Improvement is different from people pleasing. Being open to feedback is different from being desperate for approval. You can still be humble while having unshakable self-respect. You can still be kind while having firm boundaries. You can still be loving while refusing to be a doormat.

Steve Jobs said, "Your time is limited. So, don't waste it living someone else's life." But I want to expand on that. Don't waste your time trying to live up to someone else's expectations. Don't waste your energy trying to fit into someone else's definition of who you should be. Don't waste your power trying to make other people comfortable with your greatness.

You see, when you truly understand that you owe nobody anything, you also understand that nobody owes you anything either. This is liberating on both sides. >> [music] >> You stop walking around with unrealistic expectations of what people should do for you and you stop feeling guilty about what you're not doing for them. You start giving from love instead of obligation. You start receiving from gratitude instead of entitlement. This is where real relationships are born. Not from need, but from choice. Not from desperation, but from desire. Not from what you can get, but from what you can give. Not from fear of being alone, but from joy in being together.

When you stop begging people to stay, something beautiful happens. The people who are meant to be in your life will stay, not because you convinced them to, but because they want to. They'll stay not because you made it comfortable for them to take advantage of you, but because they genuinely value what you bring to their life. They'll stay not because you've made yourself indispensable through sacrifice and compromise, but because they've recognized your worth and chosen to honor it. And the people who leave, let them go. Let them go with love. Let them go with grace. Let them go with gratitude for the time you shared, but let them go. Don't chase them. Don't beg them. Don't diminish yourself trying to make them reconsider. When someone shows you they don't want to be in your life, believe them the first time.

[music] Oprah Winfrey said, "The biggest adventure you can take is to live the life of your dreams." But before you can live the life of your dreams, you've got to stop living the life of your fears. You've got to stop making decisions based on what other people might think, what other people might say, what other people might do. Your dreams don't require anyone else's permission. Your goals don't need anyone else's approval. Your happiness doesn't depend on anyone else's participation. You are the author of your own story, >> [music] >> the director of your own movie, the CEO of your own life.

But, here's what I see happening too often. People get so afraid of being alone that they surround themselves with people who don't really see them, don't really value them, don't >> [music] >> really appreciate them. They get so desperate for connection that they accept disconnection. They get so hungry for love that they eat the scraps of attention and call it a feast. Stop it. Stop settling for less than you deserve because you're afraid you won't find better. Stop accepting behavior that you wouldn't tolerate from a stranger just because it's coming from someone you care about. Stop making excuses for people who keep disappointing you.

When you have unshakable self-respect, you don't make excuses for people who disrespect you. You don't rationalize behavior that goes against your values. You don't explain away red flags because you want to see green lights. >> [snorts] >> You see things as they are, not as you want them to be. This is not about being harsh or unforgiving. This is about being honest and realistic. This is about loving people enough to see them clearly and loving yourself enough not to accept less than you deserve.

Nelson Mandela said, "There is no passion to be found playing small and settling for a life that is less than the one you are capable of living." But, playing small isn't just about your dreams and ambitions. Playing small is also about accepting relationships and situations that are smaller than what you deserve. You are capable of being loved fully, respected completely, >> [music] >> valued deeply. Don't settle for anything less because you're afraid that's all there is. Don't accept partial love because you think it's better than no love. Don't accept conditional respect because you think it's better than no respect.

When you act like you owe nobody anything, you start attracting people >> [music] >> who understand that they don't owe you anything either. And that's when real magic happens. [music] That's when you find people who choose to be generous with you, >> [music] >> not because they have to, but because they want to. That's when you find people who invest in you, not because you've manipulated them into it, but because they see your value. This is about creating relationships based on mutual respect rather than mutual need. This is about building connections based on what >> [music] >> you can give to each other, not what you can take from each other. This is about finding people who celebrate your independence rather than exploit your dependence.

Warren Buffett once said, "It takes 20 years to build a reputation and 5 minutes to ruin it." If you think about that, you'll do things differently. But I want to talk about a different kind of reputation, the reputation you have with yourself. The relationship you have with yourself, the respect you have for yourself. This is the most important relationship you'll ever have, and it's the one that determines the quality of every other relationship in your life. When you respect yourself, you teach others how to respect you. When you value yourself, you attract people who value you. When you love yourself, you don't accept anything less than love from others.

But self-respect isn't something you can fake until you make it. It's not something you can pretend your way into. It's something you have to build day by day, choice by choice, boundary by boundary. Every time you honor your values, you build self-respect. Every time you keep a promise to yourself, you build self-respect. And every time you compromise your values for acceptance, you tear down self-respect. Every time you break a promise to yourself, you tear down self-respect. Every time you allow yourself to be disrespected, you tear down self-respect.

This is why it's so important to understand that you don't owe anybody anything. Because when you feel like you owe people something, you start paying with pieces of yourself. You start giving away your time, your energy, your peace, your joy, just to keep people around who might not even want to be there.

Jim Rohn said, "You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with." But what if those five people are dragging your average down? What if those five people don't respect you, don't value you, >> [music] >> don't support your growth? What if those five people are energy vampires >> [music] >> who take from you, but never give back? It's time to upgrade your circle. It's time to raise your standards. It's time to surround yourself with people who add value to your life, not subtract from it. People who inspire you to be better, not comfortable being worse. >> [music] >> People who celebrate your wins, not minimize your victories. People who support your dreams, not discourage your ambition.

But here's the thing, you can't attract high-quality people while accepting low-quality treatment. You can't surround yourself with people who respect you while you don't respect yourself. You can't build meaningful relationships >> [music] >> while you're desperate for any relationship. This is why self-respect has to come first. This is why your relationship with yourself sets the tone for every other relationship in your life. This is why learning to act like you owe nobody anything is so crucial to your happiness and success.

When you truly embody this principle, you stop being reactive and start being responsive. You stop being driven by fear and start being guided by wisdom. You stop being motivated by what you can get and start being inspired by what you can give. You stop being defined by other people's opinions and start being directed by your own values. This doesn't happen overnight. This is a practice, not a destination. Every day, you're going to have opportunities to choose self-respect over people-pleasing. Every day, you're going to have chances to choose your values over others' approval. Every day, you're going to have moments where you can either stand up for yourself or shrink to make others comfortable. Choose yourself. Choose your peace. Choose your dignity. Choose your self-respect because here's what I know for sure. The world doesn't need another people-pleaser. The world doesn't need another person >> [music] >> walking around apologizing for existing. The world doesn't need another person dimming their light to make others comfortable. The world needs you. The full you. The authentic you. The you that doesn't apologize for taking up space. The you that doesn't beg for acceptance. The you that knows your worth and isn't afraid to act like it.

Malcolm X said, "If you don't stand for something, you will fall for anything." But I'm saying something different. I'm saying if you don't stand for yourself, you'll fall for anyone. >> [music] >> If you don't value yourself, you'll accept any value others place on you. If you don't respect yourself, you'll accept any level of disrespect from >> [music] >> others. Stand for yourself. Value yourself. Respect yourself. Not in an arrogant way, not in a selfish way, but in a healthy way. In a way that honors the gift that you are. In a way that recognizes the miracle of your existence. >> [snorts] >> In a way that acknowledges that you have something valuable to offer this world.

When you start living this way, when you start acting like you owe nobody anything, you'll discover something amazing. You'll discover that you actually have more to give, not less. You'll discover that you're more loving, not less loving. You'll discover that you're more connected, not more isolated. Because when you give from a place of choice, rather than obligation, your giving means more. When you love from a position of strength, rather than neediness, your love is more powerful. When you connect from a foundation of self-respect, rather than desperation, your connections are more meaningful. This is the paradox of self-respect. The more you have for yourself, the more you have to give to others. The more complete you are on your own, the more you can contribute to relationships. The less you need from others, so stop begging. Stop seeking validation from people who can't even validate themselves. Stop compromising your values for people who don't share your values. Stop diminishing yourself to make others feel bigger. Stop apologizing for being who you are. Start celebrating who you are. Start honoring your journey. Start respecting your growth. Start valuing your experiences. Start appreciating your uniqueness. You are not an accident. You are not a mistake. You are not too much or not enough. You are exactly who you're supposed to be. Learning what you're supposed to learn. Growing how you're supposed to grow. And you don't owe anybody an apology for that. You don't owe anybody an explanation for that. >> [music] >> You don't owe anybody anything for that. Act like it. Live like it. Breathe like it. Walk like it. Talk like it. Be like it. Because when you do, when you really embody this truth, when you live from this place of unshakable self-respect, you don't just change your life. You change the lives of everyone around you. You give others permission to respect themselves, too. You show them what it looks like to live with dignity. You model what it means to value yourself. And that, my friend, is how you change the world. Not by begging for acceptance, but by accepting yourself. Not by seeking validation, but by validating yourself. Not by owing everybody everything, but by recognizing that you owe nobody anything. And that's exactly as it should be. Your self-respect is intact. Your validation comes from within. You're not begging anybody to stay. You're complete. You're whole. You're enough. Exactly >> [music] >> as you are. Now act like it.
