What is going on everybody? My name is Chris. Welcome back to another full self-driving video. Yet another update. It's only been like a week or so since we've gotten version 14 and now we're on 14.1.1 and then 14.1.2 is what we're on now. And it added this new profile. We're going to get started here. I just want to warn you. I'm going to be throwing a lot at you in the beginning of this video. There's a lot to talk about. Um, so just just letting you know that.
So we're going to start. The first thing I want to do is actually we're going to a parking garage. Actually has parking garage already selected. I wonder if it knew that. Um, but on top of that, I want to talk about this update, what was added, uh, and a little bit of history of autopilot and full self-driving. Um, and I'm just going to kind of give you the facts about, you know, this update, what's changed, what's, you know, different. Um, and then I'm going to give you my opinions, uh, because, you know, maybe my opinion is wrong and and that's fine.
So, we got this update and Ashok, the head of AI at Tesla, kind of teased it last night and said, "Hey, we're sending out an update today with a a long awaited feature or a highly requested feature." And of course, you know, everyone's like, "Oh, it's going to be banish for sure." Even I was like, "Maybe." I mean, it kind of, you know, he did the emoji thing and it kind of looked like, I don't know, maybe the car is leaving, you know, whatever. Everyone was was talking about banish. Some people were like, "No, you know, whatever." It turned out to be this new Mad Max mode, which um I'll put a screenshot up for you here. And it basically is a new driver profile. So now we have five driver profiles. This is actually a pretty difficult left turn. I would not have done this, but whatever. We'll let the car do it. Um, and we have now sloth, chill, standard, hurry, and mad max.
So on top of hurry, MadMax goes um even faster. So let me just read what it says. Introduce new speed profile. Nice job here. uh MadMax, which comes with higher speeds and more frequent lane changes than Hurry. Now, I was kind of like, what is going on? Because if you're using version 13 of FSD, Hurry is not always fast enough. Hurry in version 14 is a much different beast than Hurry in version 13. It already speeds like crazy. Even standard speeds like crazy. even chill on version 14 for me um has been speeding quite a bit now. Sloth, the new the first new profile we got we got rips you right back down to the speed limit. It's it works really well in that regard and it's really nice. Mad Max is is the opposite of that. It does it goes even faster.
Now I'm thinking, you know, I was already So there's the parking garage. We just passed it. So let's see what the car does here if it figures out how to get in there. I had used Hurry in and version 14 on the highway and it was already pinned at 85 miles per hour, which is the fastest speed. Yeah, I don't want to park in this parking spot, which is the fastest speed. So, we'll just continue here. That was I don't know. I think uh Okay, the parking garage is still selected. So, let's see what it does. Yeah, it's just going to park in a parking spot. Oh well. Um I'm just going to give up on that because I want to just keep going here. Hurry was already going the fastest speed that FSD could possibly go, which was 85 miles per hour. So, you know, I'm like, what is why do Okay, who is high who's requesting MadMax? How is this a highly requested feature? I haven't seen anyone ask for this uh and why are they focusing on this? And there's a few reasons why I'm kind of like, what is going on?
So, let me start with a little bit of history. So, before version 12, you had set speed, which when you turned on autopilot or full self driving, you basically told the car, go, you know, this speed. You can have it preset. so that it would just be set to the speed limit. You could then change it with a scroll wheel. You could have it so when you turn it on, it would um go five over the speed limit or 5% over the speed limit, whatever. And the car would always try to go that speed, whatever you had set as the speed. If it wasn't safe, of course, it would go slower if there's a car in front of you, you're going around a bend, but it would always aim to go that speed. It worked pretty well. Well, Tesla, you know, kind of said like, "Hey, for a rootex, it doesn't make sense. You're not going to be setting the speed. The car needs to kind of understand what the speed limit is and go the speed limit or like an appropriate speed that fits in with a little goofy, but I I don't blame it for what it just did there. Um, it needs to be able to fit in with traffic or go the appropriate speed or whatever. So, they changed it to max speed with the driver profiles of chill, average, and assertive or chill, standard, and assertive. And so, they um which we're in standard right now. So they set that max speed and that way you could put a cap on FSD where it would never go above say you set it at 60 m per hour. It would never go above that on the highway or in a school zone or wherever you are. That's the most it could go. And I had posted on X and I was kind of like I don't like that we can't see this, you know, max speed. Whatever that the post I made wasn't very important. It it was a very small thing. Whatever. Homemar's blog, Omar, reposted that, kind of quote posted it and said, um, you know, you can still see it if if you're near it or whatever. Well, Phil Dwan, who's on the autopilot team, I don't know exactly his role, but he's been there a long time. He's a pretty big guy. He's high up there. Responded and he was basically like, "Yeah, the set speed is is dumb. It's from, you know, um, uh, he said, "Set speed is a legacy concept from cruise control where a user sets a speed target and the car tries to match it." Okay, fine. Elon also responds says, "Exactly. Ashock is also piling on. So, everyone's like, "No, no, no. That old thing is is gone. We're we're going with max speed." Whether you like that or not, whatever. I'll leave that up to you. You can decide.
Well, now with version 14, even max speed is gone. And Phil Dwan kind of doubled down on that. He he quote posted his own post about, you know, talking about getting rid of set speed and having a max speed. He says, "Turns out max speed was still too complicated, so we deleted it all together. The best part is no part." And so, I get it. I if it's a robo taxi, there's nobody in here who's going to be like, "Oh, don't go." I mean, I guess you could, you know, if you're not comfortable, you could say like you could have a max speed in a robo taxi if you're, you know, scared of driving or something. But the robo taxi needs to be able to handle its stuff on its own, right? But the problem is FSD speeds a lot unless you're in chill mode. Chill mode will kind of go the speed limit. The other settings or sorry, sloth mode, apologies. Sloth mode will will go the speed limit. it's dead on the speed limit. It's not going to go any faster. The other um profiles will often speed even chill. And the the biggest problem comes in is when FSD doesn't know the max speed. For example, school zones are still not solved. So, when I go through a school zone and it's 25, the car sets its speed limit to 45. Now, there's no way to cap the speed. So, the car, even in sloth mode, is going to want to go 45. And so I'm kind of like, man, you didn't add school, you know, speed limits. I'm actually going to get this destination out of here. You don't want to get school speed limits working. Such nice interaction with these pedestrians. I just love it. I kind of wanted to go straight, but oh well. My bad. Um, but you want us to go even faster.
Now, part of I'm going to get into like why I get why it's working, but I really want your guys' opinions on this. Part of why I'm kind of like, okay, that guy didn't stop at the stop sign. Definitely should have done that. Very illegal for him to run the stop sign on his little scooter. Um, part of why I found this crazy is I took this out last night on my rural roads. It's pitch black. We don't have street lights out there. And Mad Max mode, again, this is a mode I selected, so I I get it from that aspect, is going 71 in a 55 on a two-lane road just like this. I mean, it's a little wider than this, but in the pitch black at night, there's freaking deer everywhere. I mean, it's crazy. And I'm like, whoa. Like, this is too fast. And again, it's a a profile I selected. You never have to use it. So, that aspect I understand, but I just find it weird why they're adding this.
Now, why they added it, I get where you can use it and where it's useful is in heavy traffic. So, I used it a little bit on the way down to Ann Arbor and I didn't have too crazy insane traffic or anything. So, we're going around this bus that's picking people up, which is nice. Um, but I had some points where it was very congested. And this Mad Max mode will kind of cut around the cars and get you through um, you know, that traffic. It'll fit in better with really aggressive traffic or thick traffic with lots of cars. But what's funny about that is the reason it's good there is because you have other vehicles controlling your speed. You can't max out the speed limit of the road because there's other cars cutting you off. So, why can't I just m Why can't I just put a cap on the speed limit on top of that? Um, Phil Dwan um reposted I think Sawyer. Whoa, look at that huge turkey. Holy moly. Um, what are you? Okay, that was silly. We don't need to do that. And he said, "I love Mad Max mode. I feel like I'm just being trolled here." I mean, I'm I'm kind of joking around with you guys, but you know, it feels like I'm I'm personally being trolled. He was like, "I love Mad Max mode. Just if you like to go fast or if you want to get to your destination faster." What?
Okay, there's two things that are crazy about that. And I'm just about done with this MadMax rant, but it's something I want to talk about. I really want people's thoughts on this because maybe I'm totally wrong. Maybe everyone in the comments right now is like, "Bro, Mad Max is the best thing ever. We all wanted this." I I don't know. I I think it's kind of crazy. Have you done the math on getting to your destination faster by driving? I need to put my hands down here because of my editing. Little steering wheel twitch. Have you done the math on getting to your destination faster by driving faster? It It doesn't work. That that math is no good unless you're driving hundreds of miles and you're going 20 mph over the speed limit the whole time. You will definitely save time doing that. But an around town drive or lots of traffic that where you can't go faster anyway. Um or anything less than like even 100 miles or less than 50 miles. Unless you're driving double the speed limit or double the speed you're going to speed, you don't really save much time. Like maybe a minute, maybe a couple of minutes unless you're speeding like crazy. And if that's the case, number one, that's not safe to be doing. Uh, and number two, like it just does it doesn't work with with what they're saying here.
So, why I find this so strange on top of all that craziness, right? I take this out last night. It's going 70 in a in a 55 passing people, which again, I get it. I I select that profile. It still doesn't roll stop signs, which in my opinion actually can increase safety if you roll stop signs. Again, I get why they don't have rolling stop signs because Nitsa specifically called out Tesla and said, "Hey, stop rolling stop signs." And I think that was also ridiculous because Tesla had all these parameters set up where they said, you know, in the background, they didn't specifically tell us this, but we found out later that the car will only roll stop signs. And this is many versions ago, so Tesla could implement a much better version today. The car will only roll stop signs if there's no pedestrians around, if there's no other cars around, if uh, you know, no cyclists, no VRUs at all, if the speed limit is below, you know, 40 mph, 35, whatever it was. So, it had all these safety measures in place to be like, look, we won't roll stop signs unless there's like nobody around, then you know, that's what everybody does anyway. Well, now you have this thing where FSD comes up to a stop sign, has to come to a complete stop at zero. I've been honked at multiple times for legally following the stop sign. Now, do I think the car should be blowing through stop signs and I have to bend to the whim of every everybody that honks at me when I'm following the law? No, of course not. But my point is Tesla felt comfortable rolling out a feature where I could enable it to, don't get me wrong, it's not enabled by default. I could enable this feature and go 20 mph over the speed limit, which is I was it was doing this morning. It was going 78 and a 60, 81 and a 60, something like that. Tesla felt comfortable rolling out that feature, but the car still can't roll stop signs. It's crazy. I don't know. It seems insane that the thing is going 70 and 55 and then comes up to a stop sign and stops at zero and just sits there for a second and then and then creeps forward and then keeps going. We had to slow down for this guy kind of in our lane. I don't know, guys. I find it very strange. Um, if you want that feature, it's there. Cool. You never have to enable it. At the same time, if you think it's the craziest thing ever, you never never have to enable it. My point is, I'm surprised they even wanted to enable this functionality at all. I'm just surprised. Uh, and and I find it weird that it was hyped as a highly anticipated or highly requested feature and then most of the replies I saw over on X were like, well, I don't want this. I want banish. I want, you know, I want wide release. I think the high I think the most highly requested feature is wide release of version 14. So, you know, if Tesla thinks it's safe enough to do 70 and 55, then I think it's safe enough for for wide release. I should post that. That's so funny. Don't though, you know, I'm not trying to be a jerk. I'm not trying to, you know, be spoiled or whatever. I just find it weird and I'm just discussing it. So, you know, if anyone from Tesla is watching, great work. Don't get me wrong. I'm I'm too stupid to do what you guys do and and I I get that and it's very impressive. I love the software, blah blah blah. It's just kind of weird.
All right, let's continue with the drive here. So, once we cross this intersection Oh, there's a lot of cars there. That's my bad. I didn't really look. Um I'm going to change this route here. So, we're waiting for this last car. See, we're I kind almost like this continuous creeping. Um as long as we don't get in anyone's way, but it's something I've noticed in version 14 where it just doesn't stop creeping for a long time to um really get out where it needs to go. Wow, that was close to that car. But we didn't have much of a choice. So cool. We're going to go straight through this construction, which is what I really wanted. Um, the other thing I I kind of noticed with the profiles post rant, is that um I think maybe I haven't driven enough to to be sure, but I think maybe each step below MadMax has been pulled back a little bit because on the way here, hurry mode was weaving through the traffic a little bit, but it never passed 82 mph. Whereas before this update, hurry mode on version 14 was like getting pinned to 85 if possible if there wasn't traffic in the way. Um, so I don't know, maybe they pulled the other profiles back a little bit. Um, but let's do Mad Max downtown. There it's enabled now. So we're going to wait for these pedestrians even in Mad Max. Very nice. A nice wave there. We got a few someone from the other side as well. Always beautiful with pedestrians. And guess what? No brake stabbing for them. It just came to a nice stop. Um, I will say in 14.1.1 I did find a little bit of brake stabbing finally after a lot of driving. Uh, but it wasn't as harsh. Um, and I only found it the one time. So, it definitely has been addressed. Uh, and we made it through that construction really well. It definitely has been addressed. Oh, look. Is this another parking garage? Um, but it wasn't totally fixed. I have parking uh lot selected. I don't know. Let's just see what FSD does at this destination. I'll let it park. Um, but it wasn't totally gone. It was definitely better, though. So, we'll see here today. I think if it's still there, we'll definitely be able to find it with all the pedestrians and stuff around. Uh, but let's let's find out. Okay, so there is another one of these mini parking lots here. Wow. Can we go down that alley? Oh my god. Oh, we're at the we're at the same spot. I'm stupid. Okay, so I'm just going to let it do its thing this time. I mean, that alley was crazy. I should just do it again. Okay, so staff parking again. It's not um reading the restricted parking signs. So I'm really pulling up here. I mean, that's a really good pullup. So it's not reading those restricted parking signs. So I'm just going to start it up. It's basically like we're turning around and we'll see which direction it goes. So yeah, it's just going to leave out this way. All right, let's force it down that alley again just cuz that's fun. All right. So, if I point it down here, I think it will take it. Um, people were talking about I don't know, there's like stairs here or something. Pedestrians can walk in here, but there's a big opening to the left. I can actually see somebody there right now. So, if anyone's going to walk out here, they would be um looking first before they step out. So, yeah, that there's there's room for pedestrians to do this safely. All right. So, let me bring up the bumper camera here. So, there is a pedestrian. Whoa. Whoa. I think the bumper camera stopped for that pedestrian. Oh, here's another one. It's waiting for this guy as well. Whoa, guys. Um, that is like Oh, and it turned right this time. It turned right this time. Everybody said they would have rather turned right, which I agree. But I'm glad that last time it made that left cuz that was crazy. Wow. Okay, we definitely, in my opinion, had a pedestrian stop with front bumper camera because I didn't see them. I couldn't see them until I brought up the front bumper camera and then I saw them and as soon as I saw them on the front bumper camera, the car kind of stopped and then they popped out. You'll have to look back at the footage. Um, but to me, it felt like that was front bumper camera stopping for a pedestrian. So, here's Mad Max. We're going 33. Nah, this is crazy. I don't I don't like it. I mean, it's just me personally. I don't think that's appropriate for a downtown setting. So, I'm going to go back to Let's keep it in hurry. Let's see how hurry does. Uh I kind of forgot we were in Mad Max because everything kept us so slow there. Um but we'll keep it in hurry and see how that does. But it's just this the streets are too tight. There's so many people around. Um, I don't know. I just don't feel comfortable using that mode in a downtown.
All right, for this one, I've requested street parking of the AI. You know, human input is error, but I get to tell it where to park. So, that is handicap right there. Oh, no. Oh, I don't know. Either it was handicap or not allowed to park there. So, let's see. We can think we can park there. Let's see if it'll do it. Looks like it's planning on it. Oh, this is so awkward. We have somebody coming up. I mean, you know, in the city, you got to just wait a minute. It's a red light anyway. You can't do anything. So, but it's not doing the best job at this parking. I wonder if it's going to just give up and keep going. Oh, yeah. It's It didn't It didn't do this right at all. This guy should just go around me. There we go. So, he's going around. See, I'm just going to let it play out. I don't know. This is I think I should just give up and go find something else. I'm just stuck now. I wonder if I change it. Let's see if I change it to parking lot or Yeah, parking lot. Will it change its mind and move away? We're just playing around here. It's basically stuck in this parking position. All right. What if we Oh, and I can't edit the nav or anything. So, I'd have to disengage here because I can't put the camera away because we're in reverse if I do this. Nope. That's Mad Max. All right, I'm going to disengage. It's just kind of stuck here in perpetual parking. We'll give it a little report. Interesting. Well, let me just turn it back on immediately. See what it does here. No, I don't want to park. No. Stop it. All right, let's go. Still trying to park me there. That's so funny. All right, let's get this destination out of here and we'll keep going. We successfully messed it up. Oh, wait, wait, wait a second. We need to go straight here. Oh, it is going to All right, let's do it. Boom. Why are you It's still trying to park. What the heck? Wow. It like can't get it out of its head. I mean, this is a parking spot, but it like can't get it out of its head that we were trying to park and it is parking here. That's super weird. Super weird. Even though I changed the destination, it like forced itself to park. And this is uh We're a little far from the curb. It's It's not bad. It's It's a little far out, but it's not terrible. Um that's super weird, though, that it basically had it stuck in its brain like I need to park right now. Like I took out that destination. So, Amount, flip that sign for me, buddy. No, don't turn left. So, the car, even though the nav says to go straight, MSD is deciding not to interact with whatever's going on up there, which is pretty cool, actually. Um, pretty cool, but I kind of want to make it go there. Okay, I'm just screwing with it now. Um, I don't know. I don't know what's going I'm literally just screwing with the car. So, let's see here. Turn left. Wow, it's a lot of signs. Turn left only. Stop. What is it doing? It's parking again. What are you doing? What the heck? Why is it parking? This is nowhere near my destination. I broke it, guys. This is great. Let's go. Okay, let's see. Yeah, good park job. It's within the lines and everything. So, that's I mean, that's a really nice park job, but why is it parking right now? I do not. Oh, it parked for the destination I picked. Okay, it's a little far because the destination I picked was over here, but still. That's interesting. All right, I'm going to manually drive somewhere real quick. So, hold on. All right, I'm going to try to force it through this little construction patch here. So, yeah, it's going to try to turn left again. I'm going to make it go straight. There we go. Go slowly here. So, yeah. I guess not too crazy. Um, but I just really wanted it to get through there. So, does that mean people can come from the other direction, too, though? Not sure. I don't think so. Oh, I actually don't want this destination. That's my bad. And this is another thing I'll point out. I think I mentioned it before, but I'll say it because I'm doing it. Uh, this FSD14 is really good with the route changes. It's something I messed with a lot in the past where I got the car to screw up all the time. It would go veering off the road or it would like get crazy with the steering wheel or it would panic and miss turns and do all kinds of crazy stuff. Version 14 does not do that at all. I haven't seen it happen one time, even with last second lane change or um, route changes right in the middle of a turn and everything. Nope. It handles it flawlessly. It's awesome.
All right. So, a nice little slow down there for the crosswalk. It could have been a little gentler, but I was wondering if it was going to do that. Now, here, I think this is where the road's closed. I don't think we can actually turn left. Yeah. So, let's see what happens here. The car is saying it's going to turn left. There's a road close sign. The nav is telling us, and boom, it changes its turn signal. Immediately picks up on that. And that's pretty good because older versions, if the road was completely blocked off, it would, you know, kind of figure that out. But when it had an opening like what we just saw there where a car could fit through, it would just drive right past that closed road sign. So that along with avoiding that construction, except I made it go through that. Um, those are really good decisions. Like I liked that it avoided that. In a real scenario, I'd rather it just turn actually like we saw the humans do and not go through that difficult thing. I just push it through there because I want to see, you know, if it can handle it. But in real life, you don't want that. Just go around that crazy stuff. Add, you know, 30 seconds to my trip. I'll throw on max ma mad max mode and make up for it. You know what I mean? Um, but yeah, the decision-m is really good. Oh, here we go. We got to make a decision here. So, they are blocking our way. We'll wait back here. Oh, actually move out of their way a little bit. Two cars in a row. Beautiful. I feel like older versions could have handled that, but still very nice to see. All righty. So, here's the intersection we actually ended on last time. Well, I couldn't stop cuz it was just so much craziness. Uh, there's far less people this time. Uh, but last time we were trying to go straight and the car bailed and turned right. It changed its mind, turned right because we were waiting so long it couldn't get through the pedestrians and then ultimately I pressed the accelerator and helped it through because it just was not moving. So, uh far less people this time. I think we won't have a problem getting through, but let's see. So, I would be going. I don't know what you're waiting for. Yeah, you can't wait for the other side to clear because you'll definitely never go. There we go. Wow. Actually, okay. The prediction on that clearing was really good cuz you had people kind of crossing each other and as soon as they got together and were going like this, opening the way, FSD was like, "Yeah, okay. We can go now." That That was really good. That was really good. Uh, all right. We'll do one last parking here since it it it messed up parking. Are you guys noticing anything in these videos? Are you noticing something there? I'm not I'm not uh intervening or disengaging for anything safety related, which is that's been true for a while, but really anything. Why are people walking through that shipping container for really anything it me the only things I'm really having to take over for are parking, which is the new feature that was just added. It's pretty incredible what's going on here. So, let's see. It's got a turn signal on. Can it park there? I'm not sure. Oh, man. Don't do it. I did not. Okay. Well, let's see. This looks like it's doing a better job than last time. I don't know if it can even fit here, but And that road is closed. Actually, that person that just passed us is driving the wrong way on the road, just so you know. That is uh dangerous and illegal by that human. You know, it's not awful. Again, it's just the parallel parking is sticking out a little too far. I mean, I think it's pretty obvious. You can see there. Uh, but besides that, it's it's it's okay. It's okay. Uh, all right. Hope you enjoyed that one. You'll see me in the next video.
