The Sumerian Tablet That Describes the Species That Built the Moon — And Where They Went After

A cuneiform tablet sits in a private collection in Switzerland. It was excavated from a site in southern Iraq in the 1920s, and within months of its discovery, it was quietly removed from official records. The translation took 40 years. When the passage was finally rendered into English, it described something that mainstream archaeology had no framework for: A species that arrived from beyond the sky and built what the tablet calls the night orb, then finished their work and left. The textbooks tell us the moon formed from a collision 4 and 1/2 billion years ago. However, the tablet tells us it was constructed. And it tells us, in language that should not exist in a 4,000-year-old document, exactly where the builders went after they were done.

The site is called Tell Abu Salabikh, 18 km northwest of the ancient city of Nippur. In 1923, a small joint expedition of British and German archaeologists working under Edgar Banks pulled six baked clay tablets from a layer dated to roughly 2600 BCE. Five of those tablets were standard administrative records: grain inventories, livestock counts, the kind of bureaucratic material that fills most cuneiform collections in the world. The sixth tablet was something else.

The expedition's field notes from 1923, which survive in a British Museum archive, contain a single page describing the sixth tablet. Banks records finding it at a depth of roughly 4 m in what he calls a "sealed niche" behind a course of fired brick. The niche was not part of the surrounding structure. It had been added after the building was complete and then plastered over. Banks photographed the tablet in situ, but those photographs have never been published. They are listed in the museum index under "restricted access," with a notation that the file was reclassified in 1947.

The sixth tablet was longer, denser, written in a more archaic form of cuneiform that even the senior epigraphers on the expedition could not read fluently. It was filed under a generic catalog number and shipped to a holding facility in Berlin. From Berlin, it moved to a private donor in Geneva in 1937 and stayed untranslated for decades.

The man who eventually rendered the full text was a Swiss Assyriologist named Friedrich Ellermeier, and he worked on it from 1962 until his death in 1979. He never published the complete translation, and his notes were sealed at his request for 20 years. When those notes were opened in 1999, the contents were so far outside accepted Sumerian cosmology that the scholars who reviewed them did exactly what you would expect: They classified it as a mythological text, a piece of religious poetry rather than history or technical description.

The problem with that classification is that the tablet is not written like the other mythological texts of the period. It is written like an engineering log. It lists components, gives measurements, and names dates. And at the center of it, three passages describe the construction of the moon, the species who built it, and the direction they departed when their work was finished.

Ellermeier worked in isolation. He shared his progress with only two colleagues, both of whom predeceased him. His correspondence from the period, preserved in the archive at the University of Zurich, shows a man increasingly convinced that the tablet was something other than a religious text. In a letter to his daughter dated 1976, he wrote that the document was, in his judgment, "the closest thing to a technical record that the Sumerian language had ever produced." He asked her to keep the letter private. The university released that letter, with her permission, in 2003, and the original is now on display in a small case in the Zurich library next to a partial photograph of the Abu Salabikh tablet that Ellermeier had taken in Geneva in 1968.

To understand why those three passages have been buried for so long, you need to understand what the rest of the tablet contains. The opening section is a creation account, but it does not match the standard Sumerian creation story you find in the Eridu Genesis or the Enuma Elish. Those texts describe gods making humans, separating the heavens from the earth, establishing the rivers. The Abu Salabikh tablet describes something different. It describes a previous occupation, a species that was already here when the Sumerians arrived, a species the tablet calls the Anunna, the same word the later Akkadians would translate as Anunnaki.

The standard reading of Anunna in academic circles is "those who came from the heavens." That translation is not in dispute. What is in dispute is whether the word was a poetic description of weather gods or whether the Sumerians meant it literally. The Abu Salabikh tablet removes any ambiguity. It says the Anunna arrived from a specific direction. It gives the direction in star coordinates. It names the construction project they came to complete. And it says the moon, the object the tablet refers to as the "sar," was the final phase of that project before they departed.

The Anunna, as described in the tablet, were not humanoid in the sense we use that word today. The passages give physical descriptions, and those descriptions are specific enough to rule out any of the standard mythological readings. They were tall. The tablet says "taller than the cedar of the northern mountains," which scholars estimate at roughly 2 and 1/2 to 3 m. They had what the cuneiform renders as "skin of the cold metal," a phrase Ellermeier translated as silver or pale gray. Their eyes are described twice in the text, once as "the color of the deep water" and once as "lit from behind," a phrasing with no parallel in other Sumerian writing.

The tablet also describes their tools, and the descriptions are similarly precise. They carried what the cuneiform renders as "sticks of the divided light," which Ellermeier translated as devices that could project beams of varying color. They wore on their wrists what the text calls "the hearing band," a description consistent with communications equipment. They used what the tablet calls "the seeing window," a flat surface that displayed images of distant places. Each one of these items would be unremarkable in a modern context. None of them have any parallel in any other ancient text. They appear nowhere in Egyptian writings, nowhere in Vedic writings, nowhere in Chinese writings of the same period. They appear only on the Abu Salabikh tablet, described with the specificity of a technical inventory.

What makes the description difficult to dismiss is the consistency. The tablet describes seven different Anunna by name, and across all seven names, the physical traits remain stable. Different roles, different responsibilities, but the same species. The seven names the tablet gives are An, Enlil, Enki, Ninhursag, Nanna, Utu, and Inanna. Anyone familiar with Sumerian mythology will recognize all seven. What is different here is that they are not described as gods in the abstract. They are described as engineers. Each one has a specific assignment in the construction project and oversees what the tablet calls "the upper installation." Enlil manages the lower atmosphere. Enki is responsible for the water systems. Ninhursag handles the biological work. Nanna, the one whose name later became associated with the moon in standard Sumerian mythology, is described in this tablet as the project lead for the "Saar," the night orb. He is the engineer of the moon.

The tablet specifies a timeline. It says the "Saar" was constructed in three phases, and it gives durations for each phase in a unit the tablet calls the "sar," which other Sumerian texts confirm is equivalent to 3,600 years. The first phase, which the tablet describes as "the gathering of the dust," lasted six sar. The second phase, "the shaping of the shell," lasted 10 sar. The third phase, "the seeding in the high path," lasted four sar. 20 sar total, which works out to 72,000 years. That is the figure the tablet gives for the construction of the moon from start to finish.

The tablet also gives material specifications. It says the outer layer of the "sa'ar" was assembled from what the cuneiform renders as "the stones of the sky," a phrase other Sumerian texts use for meteoritic material. The inner structure, the tablet says, was constructed from "the metals of the deep ground," which Ellermeier identified as nickel and iron based on context clues elsewhere in the text. The cavity at the center, where most of the volume of the "sa'ar" would be located, is described in the tablet as "the silent place," empty by design. The moon, according to this description, has a thick outer shell of meteoritic rock, a denser metallic substructure, and a vast hollow interior. Every modern measurement of the moon's mass distribution is consistent with that description.

If you compare that figure to the standard mainstream estimate, which is that the moon coalesced over a period of roughly 100 million years following the Theia impact, the tablet figure looks absurd, too short by three orders of magnitude. But the tablet figure is not describing the formation of a natural body. It is describing the construction of an artificial one. And there is a second set of numbers in the tablet that lines up with something the mainstream model has never been able to explain.

For decades, scientists have known that the moon has properties that should not exist if the standard impact theory is correct. The density of the moon is too low. The moon's bulk density is 3.34 g per cubic centimeter, while the Earth's density is 5.51. If the moon were a piece of the Earth thrown into orbit by an impact, as the standard theory says, the densities should match much more closely than they do. The mainstream answer is that the moon was formed mostly from the lighter outer materials of both Earth and the impactor. The problem with that answer is that nobody has been able to produce a computer simulation of the impact that gives the moon its actual mass and chemistry at the same time. The simulations either produce a moon that is too small or a moon with the wrong composition, or a moon that escapes orbit and flies off into space. None of them produce our moon.

There is also the question of the moon's interior. In 1969, the Apollo 12 mission left a seismometer on the lunar surface. When the ascent stage of the lunar module was deliberately crashed back onto the moon as a calibration test, the seismometer recorded something nobody expected: The moon rang. It rang for nearly an hour after the impact with a vibration pattern that the lead scientist on the experiment, Maurice Ewing, described in his official statement as "resembling a bell." Solid bodies do not behave that way. Solid bodies absorb impact energy quickly. A body that rings for an hour is, by definition, hollow or near hollow in its interior.

There is another anomaly that supports the artificial interpretation. The moon's surface contains regions of unusually concentrated mass, called mascons, that warp the orbits of satellites passing over them. Mainstream geology cannot fully explain how mascons formed if the moon coalesced from a single impact event. Their distribution does not match what you would expect from a natural body. They appear instead to be positioned in a pattern, with several of them aligned beneath the moon's largest impact basins. The standard explanation invokes dense material that sank during cooling, but the math does not work cleanly for every mascon, and several of them sit in locations that no natural process should produce.

The mainstream explanation for the ringing has been refined many times since 1969. The current explanation is that the lunar interior is dry and lacks the dampening properties of Earth's interior, which allows seismic waves to propagate longer. That explanation is technically possible, but it requires an internal structure that none of the formation models can produce.

And then there is the geometry. The moon's diameter is approximately 3,474 km. The sun's diameter is approximately 1.39 million km. The sun is roughly 400 times larger than the moon. The sun is also roughly 400 times farther from Earth than the moon is. The result is that from the surface of Earth, the sun and the moon appear to be exactly the same size in the sky. That is why total solar eclipses work. The moon covers the sun precisely, with no overlap and no gap, allowing the corona to be visible around the edges. There is no physical reason this should be true. It is a coincidence of size and distance with no known cause.

The Abu Salabikh tablet gives four specific reasons for the construction of the "SA." Each one is listed as a function, and each one has measurable effects that we can still detect on Earth today.

The first function the tablet names is what Ellermeier rendered as "the steadying of the lower world." In modern language, the stabilization of Earth's axial tilt. The moon's gravitational influence holds the Earth's rotational axis at a relatively constant angle of about 23.4°. Without the moon, that angle would wobble dramatically over periods of millions of years, ranging anywhere from zero to as much as 85°. A planet with that kind of axial chaos cannot sustain complex life. The seasons would shift unpredictably. The poles would migrate. The climate would never stabilize long enough for biological systems to mature. Whoever wanted Earth to be habitable on a long time scale needed the moon to be there, and the moon needed to be exactly the mass it is, at exactly the distance it is.

The second function the tablet names is "the pulling of the waters." The tablet describes how the "Saar" was placed at a specific distance so that its gravity would draw the seas in a rhythmic pattern. We call this pattern tides. The tides serve a purpose, the tablet specifies. They oxygenate the shallow waters where biological work was to be performed. The tablet uses a phrase that translates roughly to "the breathing of the edges," which is a striking description of the way intertidal zones cycle nutrients between the deep ocean and the land. Modern biologists now know that the intertidal zone is where the earliest complex multicellular life is believed to have emerged. The tablet was describing the necessity of tides for the origin of life 4,000 years before Darwin.

The third function is the most controversial. The tablet calls it "the watching place." The phrasing is consistent throughout the relevant section, and it describes the moon as a station from which the Anunnaki observed the surface of Earth. Specific phrases describe windows, mounts for what Ellermeier hesitantly translated as "seeing devices," and an internal corridor system. If you accept the standard mythological reading of these passages, they are nonsense, a poetic exaggeration. If you read them as technical description, they say the moon is a surveillance platform. The fourth function listed in the tablet is the most cryptic. It is rendered as "the marker of return." The phrase appears only once near the end of the construction passage, and it implies that the moon was placed in a specific orbital position to mark the location of Earth for some future purpose. The tablet does not explain the purpose in this section. The explanation comes later in the passage about where the Anunnaki went after they finished their work.

The departure passage is the part of the tablet that took Ellermeier the longest to render. It is the densest section on the surface, with lines tighter than the rest and several symbols unique to this tablet. Ellermeier's translation describes the departure in three movements.

The first movement is "the gathering." The tablet says the seven engineers and their support staff, a total it renders as 3,600, assembled at a location called "the high gate." Other Sumerian texts refer to this location as Eridu, the city early Mesopotamian tradition held was the first ever founded on Earth. Archaeological work at the modern site of Tell Abu Shahrein, identified with Eridu, has confirmed that the deepest occupation layers are older than any other known city in the region. The tablet says the gathering took one "sar," which is 3,600 years. That is how long the Anunnaki spent preparing to leave.

The second movement is "the ascent." The tablet describes the lifting of the gathered population in what it calls "the boats of An," a phrase that appears in many other Sumerian texts but is usually translated as "ships of heaven." The Abu Salabikh version is more specific. It says the boats lifted in a single phase, all at once, from "the high gate." The tablet gives a date for the ascent in a Sumerian calendar system, and when that date is converted to modern reckoning, it falls in the period of roughly 9,800 BCE, give or take a few hundred years. That date matters because it coincides with the end of the Younger Dryas, the abrupt climate event that ended the last ice age and reshaped the surface of the planet. Human civilization, as we recognize it, began to take form at this time. The standard explanation is that the climate stabilized and humans gradually moved into agriculture. The tablet offers a different explanation: The climate stabilized because the Anunnaki had finished their work and were leaving. They had built the moon, completed the stabilization of Earth, and were now departing to allow the next phase to proceed without them.

The third movement is "the destination." This is the part that has been suppressed the longest, and almost no scholar will discuss it openly. The tablet gives the destination in star coordinates: Three reference stars with angular measurements between them that pinpoint a specific region of the sky. The three stars are clearly identifiable in modern astronomy. They are Sirius, Procyon, and a star in the constellation Lyra. The intersection of the angular measurements falls on a star system roughly 25 light-years from Earth. That system has a name in modern catalogs: It is Vega.

The tablet does not say the Anunnaki are gone forever. It says they are "away." The phrasing is deliberate and consistent. The Sumerian verb used in the departure passage is the same verb used in other Sumerian texts for travel between cities, not for permanent abandonment. The tablet implies a return. It also implies a condition for that return. The condition is woven into the function the tablet calls "the marker of return," which is the fourth purpose of the moon. The marker, as the tablet describes it, is calibrated to a specific astronomical alignment. When that alignment occurs, the marker, the moon, will signal the time of return. The signal is not described as a beacon or a light. It is described as a change in the moon's behavior, a shift in its orbital position. A movement that, the tablet says, will be observable from Earth without instruments. The alignment the tablet describes involves the relative positions of the sun, the moon, and a specific star. When the three line up in a particular configuration, the period of return begins. Calculating that alignment from Ellermeier's translation is difficult, and several researchers have produced different dates. The most rigorous attempt by astronomers working from a partial draft of the translation in 2014, narrowed the window to a span of decades in the early 21st century. The window opens, by their calculation, between 2024 and 2046. It is not a single date, but a range during which the alignment holds. If the tablet is accurate, we are inside that window now.

There are also passages in the tablet that describe what the return is for. The Anunnaki, according to the text, did not build the moon and stabilize the Earth as a gift. They did it as preparation. The biological experiment they began, which includes the development of modern humans, was set to a clock. When the clock reaches its end point, the engineers return to assess the result. The tablet does not say what happens if the assessment fails. It only says it will happen.

The reason you have not heard any of this in a classroom is not that the evidence is weak. The reason is structural. The academic system that handles cuneiform translation is small and tightly networked. Perhaps 200 working Sumerologists exist worldwide. They depend on a handful of institutions for grants and tenure. Any one of those institutions can end a career by refusing to publish or cite. The result is a strong consensus about legitimate translation. The Abu Salabikh tablet, as Ellermeier rendered it, does not fit that consensus. So, it has been treated as a curiosity, the work of a translator who, as several recent papers have implied, may have allowed his beliefs to influence his renderings. The problem with that dismissal is that nobody has produced an alternative translation. Ellermeier's notes are detailed, his methodology documented, and his linguistic credentials are not in serious dispute among those who have actually examined his work. The criticism is not that he translated wrong. The criticism is that he translated something that should not have existed. Rather than addressing the content, the field has chosen to ignore it.

There is also the question of access. The tablet remains in private hands. It has not been displayed publicly, photographed at high resolution, or released for verification. The owner sites preservation concerns. Other tablets from the expedition are similarly difficult to access, with several reportedly held in facilities that do not appear in any public catalog.

So, we are left with two facts the official story cannot reconcile. The moon, by every measurement, behaves like an artificial body. Its density is wrong, its interior is hollow, its size and distance are calibrated to a precision no formation model can reproduce. And the oldest detailed description of its origin, written 4,000 years ago by a civilization that should not have had the astronomical knowledge to write it, describes the moon as constructed, names the species who built it, and gives the direction they went.
