This video contains instructions on how to complete the Burbank Police Department physical agility course.
Successful completion of the physical agility course is a requirement in the hiring process for police recruit.
The agility course is held at the Burbank Police Department firing range, which is located at 2244 Wildwood Canyon Road in the City of Burbank. The course is made up of several consecutive segments which must be completed in two minutes or less.
The agility course is designed to simulate an urban foot pursuit an officer may be faced with in the performance of their duties.
The course begins with a short uphill run towards a 6-foot cinderblock wall. Candidates must climb over the wall to reach the next obstacle. The video shows the three most common techniques for climbing over the wall. The first technique is the muscle up. A second technique is the leg hook. The third technique is the duck walk.
After clearing the wall, candidates will run through a short maze - making sure they do not touch any of the walls or windows. To help guide candidates through the maze, a red line has been painted on the ground. If a candidate touches a wall or window, the stage must be redone.
After exiting the maze candidates will proceed to the next obstacle - the balance beam. Candidates must cross the balance beam without touching the ground or using any support.
After clearing the balance beam, candidates will enter a two-story house and climb a flight of stairs touching each step along the way before exiting the house and descending down another flight of stairs.
Candidates will then jump across a water drainage ditch, run along the hillside before crossing back over the ditch towards the railroad ties. Candidates must cross the railroad ties by stepping over each one using only one foot.
After clearing the railroad ties candidates will duck under an approximate three foot bar towards the simulated body drag. This section of the course requires that the candidate drag a 165-pound dummy across a distance of 50 feet. One technique is to drag the dummy by a limb. The second technique is to lift and drag the dummy from under the armpits.
After reaching the cones candidates can drop the dummy and proceed to the two foot wall, where they must jump the wall without touching it. Candidates must then follow the cone pattern and sprint back downrange, circling around a delineator.
After rounding the delineator candidates will run back past the house towards the final segment. The final segment consists of a grip test. To successfully complete the grip test candidates must show a strength of 70 pounds with both their right and left hand.
The Burbank Police Department is here to help you succeed. We wish you the best of luck.
