The Truth About the Holy Spirit Every Christian Should Know

Deep Bible Explained34:04

Transcription

Have you ever actually felt the Holy Spirit? Not heard a sermon about him, not read a verse, felt him. Because when he shows up, you don't stay the same person. Your heart changes. What you want changes. Why you're even here changes. This isn't a mood. It's not a good church cry that fades by Monday. It's a rewiring. The fear that used to run your life, gone. [snorts] The fog in your head, lifted. You start walking with a boldness that honestly shouldn't make sense.

Maybe you've watched it happen to someone else. They talk about God like they've met him. They carry a peace nothing can shake. And a quiet voice in you asks, "Why not me?" Or maybe you've touched a piece of it already. You felt something once. Now you're starving for the rest. This is for you. I'm going to walk you through 10 things that happen when the Spirit fills a believer. Real things, undeniable ones. And when we're done, you and I are going to pray together, right here. If you've never felt him before, get ready. This might wake up a hunger you didn't know you had. Because once you see what he can do in you, going back isn't an option. Know someone barely holding on? Someone waiting on a breakthrough? Send this to them. God might be speaking today. Like it. Share it. This one needs to travel. The Holy Spirit is real. He's moving. And today, he might be calling you.

If the Holy Spirit is real, if he truly moves on a person, what's the first thing that changes? Jesus already told us, "You will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you." Acts 1:8. The kind that flips history on its head. The kind that takes ordinary people and makes them unstoppable. Look at the disciples before that moment. 3 years with Jesus, they watched him heal the sick, raise the dead, silence storms, and when pressure came, they ran. Peter, the one who swore he'd die first, denied he even knew him three times. The rest scattered into the dark. They had faith, they had zero power. Then the spirit came. That same Peter stood in front of thousands and preached with fire in his chest. 3,000 people saved in a single day. The men who'd been hiding behind locked doors walked into the streets, healing, casting out demons, afraid of nothing. Same men, completely different.

Here's what you need to hear. That power wasn't just for them, it's for you right now. For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind. Second Timothy 1:7. If you've ever felt weak, not good enough, not brave enough, this is the thing that changes all of it. The spirit doesn't just come to comfort you, he comes to equip you. He doesn't just pull you closer to God, he makes you a threat to the darkness. And maybe you're not preaching to thousands, doesn't matter. This is the power that snaps addictions in half, the strength to stand while everyone around you bows to the world. Think about your own life for a second. Have you ever gone quiet about God because you were scared of what people might think? That's exactly why Jesus sent him, so fear would stop running your life. When he fills you, you stop chasing approval. You start moving in boldness that isn't even yours. And here's the truth. If you belong to Jesus, this power is already in you, but you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you. Acts 1:8. The question is whether you're walking in it. Are you living like the same spirit that raised Christ from the grave is breathing inside you? And if the spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you, he will also give life to your mortal body. Romans 8:11. Or still stuck in hesitation, believing the lie that you're too weak because you are too weak, but he isn't.

So, how do you get it, you ask? You hunger for it. You cry out. How much more will your Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him? Luke 11:13. This isn't reserved for a chosen few. It's for anyone willing to receive it. But you can't hold this power and your fear at the same time. You have to drop the excuses and step forward. If you've been waiting for a sign, this is it. He isn't distant. He isn't silent. He's waiting. Waiting for you to stop believing you have to be perfect first. Waiting for you to just say it. God, fill me with your spirit. Move in my life like never before. Say that and mean it and everything changes. The power of God isn't a theory. It isn't an old story. It's real. It's here and it's waiting on your yes.

Here's Peter. It's the middle of the night and he's standing near a fire in a courtyard because it's cold and he's trying to look like nobody. This is the guy who got out of the boat, who walked on water for a second before he sank. Who told Jesus to his face, "Everyone else might run, but not me. I'll die with you." And a girl, not a soldier, not a priest, a servant girl warming her hands at the same fire, looks at him and says, "You were with him." He says, "No." She says it again. He says, "No." again, and this time he throws in a curse to sell it. Three times over a teenager's question, then the rooster goes off, and it hits him all at once, and he leaves and just falls apart. That's fear. That's what it does. It doesn't need a threat. It just needs a room full of people who might think less of you. And suddenly the bravest man in the room is lying about someone he loves. You know that feeling. I know that feeling now.

Same man, a few weeks later, he's standing in front of thousands of people in Jerusalem, the same city, some of the same faces, and he's preaching out loud, naming Jesus, not hedging, not softening it for the crowd. The man who couldn't hold his ground in front of one girl is now unshakeable in front of a mob. Nobody talked him into it. Nothing about his personality changed. The Holy Spirit filled him, and the fear just left. 3,000 people believed that day. Here's the part I actually want you to sit with. It's the same spirit. The one in Peter is the one offered to you. So, let me ask you the plain version of the question. Not what's holding you back. You already know what's holding you back. There's a conversation you keep not having. A text you've drafted and deleted. A person at work who knows you go to church, but has never once heard why it matters to you. And every time some small voice says, "Not now. You'll say it wrong. They'll think you're weird." That voice is not God. For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind. 2 Timothy 1:7. Read that again slowly. It doesn't say he'll take the fear away someday if you're good enough. It says he didn't give it to you in the first place. It's not yours. You've just been carrying it.

I'm not going to pretend you'll wake up tomorrow and feel bulletproof. Peter didn't earn his boldness. He received it. And you receive it the same way. You ask. So, ask right now wherever you are. Holy Spirit, fill me. Take the fear I've been carrying and hand me back what's actually mine. Let me stop lying at the fire. Let me open my mouth. Say it and mean it. The girl by the fire never got the last word over Peter, and fear doesn't get the last word over you.

Nobody tells you this part. When the Holy Spirit starts working on you, he usually starts by putting his finger on something, some habit, some attitude, something you've been carrying that you don't want to look at. And it stings. Let's not pretend it doesn't. But, here's what took me a long time to understand. That sting isn't him shaming you. It's him clearing space. He's not pointing at the thing to make you feel small. He's pointing at it because he wants it gone so something better can grow where it was. And when you finally stop fighting him on it, when you just say, "Okay, you're right." Something strange happens. You get hungry. Specifically, you get hungry for a book you probably used to find boring. Be honest. For most of us, the Bible was homework. You knew you were supposed to read it. You'd open it, get three verses into some genealogy, and quietly close it again. The words were just words on a page.

Then the spirit moves in and the same book you couldn't get through starts reading you. You'll hit a verse you've read a hundred times and it stops you cold like you're seeing it for the first time. Jesus actually explained why this happens. The helper, the Holy Spirit, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you. John 14:26. That's the whole secret. You were never meant to read it alone with just your brain. There's a teacher. And when he's the one turning the pages with you, it stops being information and starts being a conversation. You've probably felt a flicker of this already. A verse drops into your head at the exact moment you need it. You're stuck on a decision and a line you read three weeks ago suddenly makes sense of the whole thing. That's not a coincidence. That's him.

Here's the part the enemy really doesn't want you to catch. This isn't just filling your head. It's re-wiring you. The lie you've believed about yourself for years, the one that plays on a loop, starts losing to the truth. The fear you keep white-knuckling through gets quieter because now you've got something solid to stand on. Which is exactly why you'll suddenly feel too busy to read it, too tired, too behind. Watch for that. It's not random. The enemy doesn't fight you over a book he thinks is harmless. He fights you over the one thing that makes you dangerous to him. If you can keep telling yourself, "I'll get to it later. I already know enough." He wins without ever showing up. And look, you're never going to reach the point where you're done needing it. I'm not there. Nobody's there. It's food you ate yesterday and you're still going to be hungry tonight. Same with this. So, the real question isn't whether the word is powerful, it's whether your hunger for it is still alive or whether Netflix and exhaustion and a hundred small distractions have slowly talked you out of it. If it's gone quiet, the spirit can wake it back up tonight if you let him. So, pray this with me, "Holy Spirit, give me hunger for your word again. Clear out the distractions and the excuses. Open my eyes. Make it come alive in me and use it to change me from the inside." Open the book. That's your part. He'll handle the rest.

Let's talk about the thing nobody admits at church. Prayer is hard. Not spiritually deep hard, boring hard. You sit down to pray and 40 seconds in you're thinking about an email. You start again. You lose it again. Pretty soon you're just repeating the same four phrases you always say and part of you is wondering if anyone's even on the other end. If that's you, I want you to hear something. That's not a character flaw. That's you trying to do a spiritual thing with only natural equipment. There's help you haven't plugged into yet. The spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans. Romans 8:26. Sit on that for a second. It doesn't say get better at praying. It says the spirit prays through you. On the nights you've got nothing, no words, no energy, no idea what you even need, he carries it. He knows what to ask for when you don't.

Go back to that upstairs room in Acts 2. The disciples are just sitting there waiting like Jesus told them to and then it comes a sound like a violent wind filling the whole house. They're filled with the spirit and they start praying in ways they'd never prayed in their lives. Everything changed in that room. Their prayers stopped being requests and started being weapons. Now for some people this shows up as praying in tongues a language your mind doesn't follow but your spirit does. Paul says it plainly that the person speaking is talking to God not to people uttering mysteries by the spirit. If that's unfamiliar to you don't get stuck there. That's not the whole gift. It's one expression of it because here's what happens even without tongues. He gives your prayers weight. You'll start feeling a pull towards something, a person, a situation and you won't fully know why. You'll just know you have to pray about it. You'll wake up at 3:00 in the morning with somebody on your heart. You'll find yourself praying with a fire you didn't work up on your own. And I need you to understand why this gets attacked so hard. Every excuse you've ever had for skipping prayer, too tired, too busy, it doesn't work anyway, God's not really listening. Think about who benefits when you believe those. Not you, not God. Your prayers move things you can't see. Every time you pray you're pushing on the dark. That's exactly why something in you always finds a reason to put it off. So don't clean yourself up first. Don't wait until you feel focused. Just hand him the whole struggling mess of it. Holy Spirit take over my prayer life. On the days I've got no words give me yours. Lead me. Remove the distraction and the doubt. Pray through me. Then stop performing. The pressure to say it right was never yours to carry. Let him carry the prayer and go find out what happens.

Here's a moment you've probably already lived. You're standing near someone could be a checkout line, could be church, could be your own kitchen and out of nowhere you get this pull to say something to them, pray for them, tell them one specific thing and you don't because the second the thought lands three more show up right behind it. That's just me. What if I'm wrong? What if I say it and nothing happens and I look insane? So you swallow it, you walk away and you'll never know what was on the other side of that. I want to talk about that pull because I don't think it's your imagination. A lot of us got handed a quiet lie somewhere along the way that the supernatural stuff, the healings, the words of knowledge, the prophecy, all of that closed up shop when the apostles died. Or that it's real but it's for the gifted few. The pastors. The people with something you don't have. Scripture says the opposite and it's not vague about it. To each one the manifestation of the spirit is given for the common good. First Corinthians 12:7. To each one. Read that again. Not to the platform, not to the anointed elite. To each one which if the spirit lives in you includes you.

So what do these gifts actually look like on a normal day? They look ordinary right up until they don't. You feel that pull to pray for someone, you actually do it and they look at you stunned because they'd been begging God for exactly that an hour ago. You open your mouth to encourage somebody and something comes out that's wiser than you are. You pray for a person in pain and the pain lifts. You'll be tempted to call all of that coincidence. Don't. Here's the hard part though. Most believers feel the nudge and file it under maybe later for their entire lives. The gift just sits there unopened because stepping out feels risky and staying quiet feels safe. Run the thought experiment. What if Peter had felt the spirit move and decided not today, too weird. What if Paul had looked at his past and decided God couldn't possibly mean him? There's no church. There's no gospel reaching you. The whole thing dies in a locked room because nobody was willing to look foolish. The exact same spirit that pushed them out that door is the one nudging you. The only difference between you and them isn't holiness. It's that they moved. And I already know the objection because it's the same one for everybody. I'm not ready. I'm not qualified. You're right, you're not. That was never the requirement. These gifts don't run on your talent. They run on his power and your willingness. If he's calling you towards something, he's already stocked you for it. Your only job is to not talk yourself out of it. So, I'm not going to end this with a prayer today. I'm going to end it with an assignment. The next time you feel that pull, the one you always explain away, do the thing. Say the sentence. Pray the prayer out loud. Cross the room. You'll either watch God move or you'll be a little embarrassed and survive it just fine. But you will finally know and something in you shifts the first time you find out it was him all along.

There is a gift sitting in you right now that you have never opened. I mean that literally. If the spirit of God lives in you, then something from heaven came with him, and most believers spend their whole lives never once unwrapping it. Scripture doesn't leave room to argue about this. To each one, the manifestation of the spirit is given for the common good. To each one, not to the pastor, not to the platform, not to the handful of people who seem more spiritual than the rest of us. To each one. That's the whole church, and the church includes you, whether you feel qualified for it or not. So, let's actually name what we're talking about, because vague spirituality helps nobody. Healing, prophecy, wisdom, knowledge, faith, miracles, discernment, tongues. When you read that list, part of your brain files half of it under early church only, under that doesn't happen anymore. And I want you to notice who profits from you believing that. If the enemy can convince you the gifts expired 2,000 years ago, he never has to fight you over them, because you'll disqualify yourself for free.

Try it a different way. Look at the world you actually live in. Are there still sick people who need a touch from God? Then healing still matters. Does the church still need real wisdom instead of clever opinions? Then that gift still matters. Are there still lies dressed up as truth? Still people being quietly led off a cliff? Then discernment matters more than it ever has. The needs never expired, which means the gifts that meet them never expired, either. Same spirit, same power, same today as it was in that upstairs room. The tragedy isn't that people don't have the gifts, it's that they're waiting, waiting for goosebumps, waiting for a voice from the ceiling, waiting for some undeniable heavenly moment to give them permission to move on something that's already been placed inside them. And while they wait, the gift stays exactly where it started, wrapped, untouched, doing nothing for anyone. You don't activate any of this by feeling ready. You activate it by faith, which almost always means moving before you feel ready. You take the risk. You trust that if God put something in you, he'll show up to back it. You lay the hand on the shoulder. You say the encouraging word you've been sitting on. You pray the bold prayer out loud with your eyes open. And maybe he's already been stirring one specific thing in you. You know the one. And you keep pushing it down because looking foolish scares you more than staying stuck does. That fear is the only lock on the box. So, pray this and mean it. Holy Spirit, open what you've placed in me. Take the fear and the second-guessing. I stop waiting. Move through me and let it be seen. Now, go find out it's real.

You can be spiritually gifted and still be missing the entire point. Paul said it flat out. You could prophesy dead on, work actual miracles, have the kind of faith that moves a mountain into the sea, and have none of it count for anything. One thing decides that, love. Not the word love, not the feeling you get around people who are easy to be around. Something else. Something you can't fake and can't manufacture on your own. That's the part the Spirit handles. Here's how it lands. The love of God has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit. Romans 5:5. Poured in, not taught, not assigned as homework, deposited. The same love that had Jesus healing strangers and forgiving people mid-betrayal, that specific love gets put inside you. And you'll know it's there because it starts doing things you couldn't do before.

Think about who you were with your walls up. Maybe you kept a running list of who wronged you. Maybe you loved people, but only when it was convenient, only when it came back around. Maybe there's a grudge you've been feeding so long it feels like part of you now. Then the Spirit moves in and forgiveness that used to be impossible starts coming easier. Not because you got stronger, because the love doing it isn't yours. Human love keeps score. It gives based on what it gets back. This other love doesn't work like that. It doesn't love people because they earned it. It loves them because of who God is. That's the whole difference and it changes everything downstream. Now, watch what that looks like when it's pushed all the way to the edge. Acts 7, Stephen. They're stoning him to death. Rocks coming down, his body breaking. And these are the people doing it, right there, faces he can see. And with his last breath he says, "Lord, do not hold this sin against them." Sit with that a second. He's not praying for rescue. He's praying for the men killing him. Nobody does that. Nobody does that on their own strength. That's not a personality trait or a good upbringing. That's the exact thing Jesus said from the cross, "Father, forgive them." showing up in an ordinary man because the same Spirit was in him. That's the ceiling of what we're talking about, and it's the same spirit being offered to you.

So, let me get specific because this stops being a nice idea the second it has a name attached. There's probably a name, a person you know you're supposed to forgive and haven't. A wound you've carried so long you've built your identity partly around it. And every time you try to just move on, it climbs back up when you least expect it. You already know you can't think your way out of that. You've tried. It doesn't work because this was never a willpower problem. You can't love like Stephen on your own. You were never meant to. That kind of forgiveness isn't something you produce. It's something the Spirit does in you when you finally hand him the thing you've been guarding. So, don't aim for a feeling right now. Feelings will lie to you here. Just bring him the name. Holy Spirit, pour your love into me. Take the bitterness I've been protecting and the wound I keep reopening. Teach me to forgive the way I've been forgiven. Let this run through me to people who never even said sorry. You may not feel a thing when you pray it. That's fine. Watch the next few weeks instead. Watch yourself have compassion for someone who used to set you off. Watch yourself let something go you swore you never would. That's not you softening it. That's him.

Here's a test you can't study for. You can talk about God all day, quote verses, post the right things, but there's one thing you can't fake for long, and Jesus put his finger right on it. You will know them by their fruit. Matthew 7:16. Fruit, not words. Not how loud you worship. What actually grows out of your life when nobody's performing, and the Spirit has a specific list of what he grows. "The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control." Galatians 5:22-23. Read those slow. Those aren't personality types. Anybody can be patient when traffic's moving and the kids are asleep. This is patience that shows up when it makes no sense at all.

So, here's the thing about fruit. A tree doesn't grunt to produce an apple. It doesn't strain. It doesn't set a goal or white-knuckle its way through. It stays connected to the root, and the fruit just comes quietly as a byproduct of being attached to the source. That's the whole secret, and it's the opposite of how most of us try to be better people. Look back over the last year or two of your own life for a second. Maybe you used to snap at people, and somewhere along the way you noticed you don't as much anymore. Maybe you used to replay every offense at 2:00 a.m., and now you let things go you know the old you would have held for years. Maybe you lived on a low hum of anxiety, and lately there's a peace you honestly can't explain and didn't earn. You didn't manufacture that. You didn't read a self-help book and grind it out. That's fruit. That's what growing on a healthy root looks like.

Now, the harder side of the same truth, if the fruit isn't there at all, if someone's been spirit-filled for years but is still all anger, still all selfishness, still zero self-control, then something's wrong at the root, not the branches. And that's the part I want you to actually hear because I think somebody's about to condemn themselves right now. Maybe you're sitting there going, "But I still lose my temper. I still get anxious. Some days there's no joy in me at all. Do I even have the spirit?" Slow down. That's not the diagnosis you think it is. A tree with weak fruit doesn't have a fruit problem. It has a root problem. It's not staying connected long enough, deep enough for the source to do its work. Same with you. Struggling fruit isn't proof he's absent. It's usually a sign the roots have gone shallow, that life got busy, his presence got squeezed to the edges, and you've been running on your own strength again. So, the fix is never try harder to be patient. You've tried that. It lasts about a week. The fix is to get rooted again. Stop white-knuckling your own character. Get back in his presence and let him do the growing. Let him prune the stuff that needs to go, even when pruning stings. You struggle with anger. Stop fighting the anger. Sink the roots deeper and watch patience grow where the anger used to be. Drowning in anxiety? Same answer. Peace isn't something you force. It's something that grows on you when you stay attached. So, pray this, and notice it's not a prayer to try harder. Holy Spirit, grow your fruit in me. I stop straining. Sink my roots deep into you. Prune whatever needs to go, and let what grows out of my life actually look like you. Then quit checking the branches every 5 minutes. Stay rooted. The fruit takes care of itself.

I want to slow all the way down for this last one, because everything we've talked about, the boldness, the fruit, the love, the gifts, it all points at one question you've probably been carrying a long time. What am I even here for? Be honest. You've felt that. The low quiet sense that you're missing something. You chase the goal. You get the job. You build the relationship. And there's still this small hollow spot that none of it fills. You've done everything right and still lie awake wondering if you're on the wrong road entirely. I'm not going to tell you to try harder to find your purpose. That's the whole trap. You've been trying to piece it together on your own and it keeps not fitting because it was never yours to figure out alone. Jesus said something about this. When the spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all truth. John 16:13. Guide, not shove, not shout. He leads the person who's actually willing to follow.

Look at the disciples one more time because their story is your story. Years with Jesus. And even after all of it, they were still hiding in a room, still unsure what they were supposed to do with their lives. Then the spirit came and it wasn't just courage that showed up. It was clarity. In one moment, a bunch of fishermen and outsiders knew exactly why they existed. Same men, suddenly on purpose. That's what he does. He doesn't just hand you power. He hands you your why. But here's the part I really need you to hear before you go. He whispers. He does not scream over the noise of your life. He won't fight your phone, your feed, your endless mental to-do list for your attention. And that might be the whole reason it's felt like God's been silent. He hasn't been silent. You've been loud. So maybe the answer you've been begging for isn't going to come in a lightning bolt. Maybe it comes the moment you're quiet enough to hear a whisper you've been drowning out for years.

Now think back over everything in this video, the boldness that beats fear, the word coming alive, prayer that actually connects, gifts waking up, love you couldn't produce on your own, fruit growing without strain, purpose replacing the fog. Every single one of those comes from the same source, one spirit, one yes. You don't have to be ready. You don't have to have it cleaned up first. The disciples didn't. Peter didn't. Nobody who was ever used by God qualified first. They just surrendered. So before you click away, before you go back to the noise, do this with me. Out loud if you can, wherever you are. Holy Spirit, I've been carrying this on my own long enough. I surrender it, my plans, my striving, all of it. Come fill me. Show me why I'm here. Speak and I'll get quiet enough to listen. Lead and I'll follow. If you meant that even a little, something just started. You might not feel fireworks tonight. That's okay. Watch the next few days. Watch the fear get smaller. Watch a peace you can't explain start showing up. Watch a whisper get clearer. That's him. He heard you and when he's not going anywhere.
