The Middle East is burning yet again. The ceasefire was barely a week old. The ink on the US Iran memorandum of understanding. The peace framework hadn't even dried and the world was just beginning to exhale. And then a projectile slammed into the starboard side of Singapore flagged cargo vessel 7.5 nautical miles off the coast of Oman.
Why is Hormos on fire again? Let's rewind because the context here is everything. The straight of Hormos has been largely blocked since February 28 since the war began. The IRGC shut it down, laid mines and attacked merchant ships.
Then a breakthrough happened. A US Iran memorandum of understanding was finalized. An agreement to pause hostilities, reopen the strait and get those ships moving. Oman then announced a new shipping transit route, an alternative route through the straight of formos coordinated with the international maritime organization as maritime traffic slowly resumed following weeks of disruption in the straight of the reaction to that sheer fury.
The IRGC warned that vessels transiting the straight of Ormos must use routes authorized only by Thran and obtain IRGC approval to do so. Now that is not a warning. That is an ultimatum. And then 5 hours later after that a ship was hit. A cargo vessel was struck by an unknown projectile off the coast of Oman causing damage to its bridge. But luckily no casualties were reported in the incident.
Ships that do not get permission from Iran are using the Oman side of the street and this attack took place precisely there. It was likely a warning to everybody. Iran can strike even where ships assume they are more protected. And it gets worse. viewers. An Iranian lawmaker declared that given the repeated violations of the memorandum of understanding, an immediate military reaction was the only way to prevent further damage to Iran's strategic position in this conflict.
Now, think about that. The MOU is not even two weeks old, and hardliners inside Thran are already calling it violated and demanding war to resume. The IRGC appeared frustrated because the Omani route partially bypasses Iran's direct control over the shipping in the Hormos. Now that is the real story here. This is not about navigation routes. It is about dominance. Iran wants to be the gatekeeper of 1/5if of the world's oil and any route Omani, UN bagged or otherwise that sidesteps that control is to Thran an act of war.
Now here is where we stand. A ship has been attacked. The evacuation is paused. An Iranian lawmaker is calling for a war. and a fragile MOU is being stress tested in real time in open water with projectiles. The ceasefire held for barely a week before the first shot. The straight of hormos is not open, it is contested and right now the IRGC is making sure the world knows the difference.
