So, scientists just discovered that a simple vitamin decides how healthy your gut microbiome is and directly controls how many good versus bad gut bacteria live inside of you. Just a normal supplement that you can buy for a few bucks online. Pretty mind-blowing results from a study that tested all major nutrients and found the number one most important one.
This vitamin completely blew all the other tested nutrients out of the water and had by far the biggest impact on gut health. When I first read that, I honestly had to double-check the paper because I was so surprised by these findings. So, let's dig into the data and let me give you the ideal supplement and dosage if you want to take this vitamin.
But, before we get there, we need to talk about something most people completely misunderstand about gut health. A lot of people think good gut and bad gut bacteria are fighting each other directly all day long. While that does kind of happen, that's not really how your body keeps things under control. Your body has its own built-in system for managing bacteria. And that system is actually far more important than most people realize.
You see, the lining of your intestine produces mucus. Your immune system releases special compounds that help control microbial growth. Your gut produces antimicrobial substances. And your intestinal barrier decides what stays inside your digestive tract and what gets through into the bloodstream. When all of these systems work properly, then beneficial bacteria generally thrive while harmful microbes have a much harder time taking over. But, when all of these systems break down, then things can quickly change.
And this is where this vitamin becomes incredibly important. Researchers are finding that it plays a central role in controlling many of the systems that we just talked about. So, everything that keeps your gut ecosystem balanced. And here's where things get really interesting. The study I'm referring to didn't just look at one or two bacteria strains. They looked at all kinds of good and bad bacteria in the microbiome and which nutrients had the biggest effect on them.
Now, if you had asked me before reading this paper which nutrient would win, I would have probably guessed zinc because we have so much data on it, especially in terms of leaky gut, but it wasn't the winner at all. In fact, out of all the nutrients tested, vitamin A produced the biggest changes in microbiome composition and activity. Removing it from the diet had the largest negative effect and then adding it back in stabilized everything very quickly. That alone should get your attention because vitamin A is usually marketed as an eye health vitamin and most people know that it helps vision. Some people also know that it supports your immune system, but almost nobody links it to your microbiome. But in this study, it had the strongest effect on your gut bacteria by far.
Think about what that means for a second. We often think of gut health as something that depends on probiotics, fermented foods, or special supplements. And all those matter, but this study tells us that one of the biggest factors is simply if your body has enough vitamin A. In other words, before you start adding new bacteria into your gut, your body needs the nutrients that help manage the bacteria that's already living there.
Based on what we know about vitamin A from other research, it works by supporting three very important things for gut health. First, it helps maintain the mucus layer that lines our intestines. Most people never think about this layer, but it's one of the most important parts of your gut. Think of it like a protective shield that sits between your gut bacteria and the cells that make up your intestinal wall. Beneficial bacteria can live within this mucus layer without causing any problems, but harmful ones have a much harder time reaching the tissues underneath. When vitamin A levels drop, that protective barrier becomes weaker, which makes it easier for unwanted microbes and also toxins to irritate your gut lining.
Next, vitamin A supports your immune system in the gut. It does this by promoting the production of something called secretory IgA. Don't worry about the complicated name, just think of it as your gut security system. Secretory IgA is an antibody that patrols the digestive tract and helps identify microbes that shouldn't be there. It can bind to bacteria, viruses, and other invaders before they have a chance to cause any problems. So, it helps your immune system decide which visitors should be tolerated and which ones need to be kept under control.
And then third, and this ties in with the last benefit, vitamin A also supports the production of antimicrobial compounds that then help kill off the bad bacteria once it's been identified. These substances act like your body's own little soldiers, and unlike antibiotics, which tend to wipe out all bacteria at once, these helpers are constantly produced in very small amounts to help maintain order inside your gut. It's one of the ways your body prevents any single group of microbes from completely taking over.
Great. Now, let's get to the key part of this video. If you want to boost your vitamin A levels, how do you do this correctly, and should you supplement? First, let's talk about food sources. The best sources are liver of fish, egg yolks, and grass-fed butter. You can also get beta-carotene from plant foods like sweet potatoes, pumpkin, or carrots, which the body then converts into vitamin A. But, people who rely only on beta-carotene for their vitamin A levels often run into problems, even if they consume enough beta-carotene.
More on that in a second, which brings me to vitamin A supplements, which is a very controversial topic. High doses of vitamin A supplements have been linked to toxicity and birth defects, which is why you will find a disclaimer on pretty much every vitamin A supplement that's warning you about this. That being said, even vitamin A supplements have their place. The reason for this is a functional deficiency, which is fairly common.
You see, the conversion of beta-carotene into vitamin A depends on strong thyroid activity and enough thyroid hormones. So, if your thyroid is underperforming and you don't eat enough vitamin A from animal sources, then you can develop symptoms that are similar to a deficiency even when enough beta-carotene is in your system. There's also a gene variation of the BCMO1 gene that makes this process even less efficient.
On top of that, there is an inverse relationship between vitamin A and vitamin D. When one goes up, the other one goes down, at least when we're talking about very high supplemental doses. Nowadays, many people consume very high doses of vitamin D, which can create an imbalance between the two over time. This is just one of the reasons I'm not a big fan of supplementing vitamin D in its isolated form in high doses without also keeping an eye on your vitamin A levels.
So, if you decide to supplement vitamin A, what type is best and which dose should you use? Generally, between 3,000 to a maximum of 10,000 IU of retinol palmitate or retinol acetate, those are recommended to fix a deficiency. As with all fat-soluble vitamins, you want to be careful not to overdose here because vitamin A can accumulate in your liver and other tissues if you take high doses for too long.
A mix between food and supplements would be cod liver oil, for example, and 1 tsp of quality cod liver oil daily will cover your RDA of both vitamin A and vitamin D without messing up the ratio between the two. And even though cod liver oil isn't technically a supplement because it's so concentrated, it still feels like one.
And one last thing, the key to correct dosing and also understanding the study we talked about is that most of the benefits were seen after fixing a deficiency. So, you definitely don't need crazy high doses, but you want to make sure to get enough retinol, especially if you're planning a gut health protocol. That way, the pro and prebiotics that you're probably taking will have the best conditions to actually have an effect.
