Is the Holy Spirit truly living in me? Not in theory, not just because someone said so, but in your actual day-to-day life, can you really know if he's there?
I want to talk to you, not as a preacher or a teacher, but as someone who has wrestled with that same question, someone who knows what it's like to stand in a worship service by people lifting their hands and wonder why you don't feel what they seem to feel. Someone who's read the verses about power, joy, peace, and wondered, "Why don't I see more of that in me?" And maybe you've asked those questions, too, not because you don't believe in God, but because deep down you want to be sure, really sure that the Holy Spirit isn't just a concept, but a real active presence in your life.
The truth is, the Bible doesn't leave us to guess. God didn't intend for his spirit to be a mystery locked away behind spiritual jargon or religious performance. He gave us clear, unmistakable signs, not a checklist to perform, but evidence, living proof that his spirit is alive in you. This isn't about being perfect. It's not about how loud you pray or how many Bible verses you can quote. It's not even about feeling spiritually high all the time. This is about recognizing the quiet, powerful work of the spirit that begins to change you from the inside out. It's about the fruit you bear, the hunger you feel, the convictions that rise in your heart when no one's watching. It's about the shift in your thinking, the boldness in your words, the longing to walk in purity and truth, not because you have to, but because something or rather someone is stirring deep within you.
So, as we walk through these seven signs from scripture, I want to invite you into something more than just a teaching. I want to invite you into a self-examination, a journey, a conversation with God. Because by the end of this, you might just realize he's been there all along.
Number one, a new heart and a new spirit. Let's start with one of the clearest promises God ever made about what happens when his spirit comes to live inside of someone. It's in Ezekiel 36:26-26. God says, "I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you. I will remove from you your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh. And I will put my spirit in you and move you to follow my decrees and be careful to keep my laws." That's not symbolic. That's not poetic. That's a radical transformation. When the Holy Spirit enters your life, something begins to shift inside of you. You may not see fireworks or fall to the floor, but over time, the things that used to harden your heart start to melt away. You notice that your conscience feels more alive. You start to care about things that never used to bother you. Maybe the way you speak to people or the things you watch or how honest you are when no one's looking. It's not about guilt. It's about a new tenderness, a spiritual sensitivity. What once felt normal now starts to feel off. What once felt heavy now feels empty. That's the spirit of God beginning to take that heart of stone, cold, self-centered, unresponsive, and replacing it with a heart of flesh. A heart that feels, a heart that responds, a heart that wants what God wants. This isn't something you can fake. You can't manufacture a new heart. Religion can teach you rules, but only the Holy Spirit can make you want righteousness. That's a huge difference. You stop asking how much can I get away with and start asking, "Lord, how can I please you?" That's the evidence. That's the sign. And it's not about achieving perfection. That's not just maturing. That's the spirit. The world may say, "Be kind if they're kind to you." But the spirit teaches us a love even for our enemies. The world says, "Do what makes you happy." But the spirit fills you with joy even in suffering. The world says, "Stand up and fight for your rights." But the spirit teaches gentleness and self-control. This is the upside-down kingdom, and the fruit proves where your roots are. And here's the best part. You don't have to force this. You don't have to wake up every morning and say, "Okay, I need to act more joyful, more patient, more gentle today." No. When you stay connected to the vine, Jesus Christ, the fruit comes naturally, not instantly, but inevitably. So, take a moment and think. Have you noticed changes in your reactions, in your relationships? Have people said things like, "You've changed or you seem different?" That's not just personal growth. That could very well be the evidence that the spirit of God is living and active in you, producing fruit that lasts.
Number three, a deep hunger for God's word. There's something unmistakable that happens when the Holy Spirit enters a person's life. The Bible stops being just a book, and it becomes spiritual food. What once felt like old language and distant stories suddenly starts to feel alive, personal, and powerful. That's not just a change in interest. It's a spiritual hunger that only comes from the spirit of God. 1 Peter 2:2 says, "Like newborn babies, crave pure spiritual milk so that by it you may grow up in your salvation." And Jesus himself said in Matthew 4:4, "Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God." When the Holy Spirit is in you, he creates this deep inner desire to know God's heart. And the clearest way to know God's heart is through his word. You might find yourself wanting to read scripture in the quiet moments of your day. Not because someone told you, not because it's part of a routine, but because something in your spirit longs for it. You start to notice how a single verse can speak directly to what you're facing. You open your Bible, and it feels like God himself is speaking to you in that moment. That's not coincidence. That's the Holy Spirit doing what Jesus said he would do, guiding you into all truth. John 14:26 says, "The Helper, the Holy Spirit, will teach you all and remind you of everything I have said to you." That means the Spirit isn't just drawing you to the word. He's helping you understand it, apply it, and remember it when you need it most. It's like a conversation. You read, and the Spirit illuminates. You ask, and the Spirit reveals. And over time, the Bible stops being something you study only with your mind and becomes something that feeds your soul. Now, let's be honest, not every day feels like a spiritual feast. There will be seasons where it feels dry. Moments where you struggle to focus, but hunger doesn't disappear just because appetite waivers. The fact that you miss the word when you drift. The fact that you feel the absence when you haven't been in scripture, that's a sign in itself. Because before the spirit was in you, you didn't crave the things of God. You might have respected the Bible, maybe even appreciated it, but you didn't need it. Now you can't live without it. So if you felt that pull toward God's word, if scripture is beginning to nourish you, guide you, convict you, and stir something deeper inside you, that's not random. That's not just discipline. That's the Holy Spirit drawing you closer to the heart of the Father, one verse at a time.
Number four, conviction of sin. One of the most powerful and often misunderstood signs that the Holy Spirit is living in you is this. You no longer feel comfortable with sin. You may still struggle. You may still fall. But you can't stay in it. Not peacefully. Not without that deep inner stirring that says, "This isn't who you are anymore." John 16:8 tells us exactly what the Holy Spirit does when he comes. "He will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment." Notice the word "convict." That's very different from "condemn." Condemnation says, "You're worthless. You'll never change." Conviction says, "This isn't God's best for you. Come back." Condemnation pushes you away from God. Conviction draws you closer to him. Before the spirit enters your life, sin feels normal. Lying doesn't bother you. Gossip feels like fun. Lust seems harmless. Pride feels like confidence. But when the Holy Spirit comes in, your spiritual senses wake up. Suddenly, what used to feel right begins to feel off. Your laughter turns to discomfort. Your freedom starts to feel like a chain. And even when no one else knows what you did, you know, and more importantly, you care. That's not weakness. That's holiness growing inside of you. And it's not about being perfect. Every believer stumbles. Even Paul said in Romans 7 that he sometimes did the very things he hated. But here's the difference. The spirit won't let you make peace with sin. You can't stay in rebellion without feeling the tension. That's the sign. That's the spirit. You'll notice something else, too. Your repentance becomes quicker. You're not just sorry because you got caught or because you feel bad. You're sorry because you've grieved the heart of the one who loves you. That's how you know the spirit is working. You don't just want forgiveness. You want restoration. You want to be clean again. You want closeness with God more than you want the pleasure of sin. And that right there is a miracle. So if you felt that tug in your heart, if you've heard that quiet inner voice calling you out of compromise, out of secrecy, out of the patterns that once held you captive, don't ignore it. Don't be discouraged by it. That's not a sign you're far from God. That's proof that he's living inside you. Because the Holy Spirit doesn't let you stay in the dark. He shines light. He brings conviction. And he does it not to shame you, but to lead you into freedom.
Number five, desire to live in holiness. There's something beautiful and honestly a little surprising that starts to happen when the Holy Spirit dwells in you. You don't just want to avoid sin. You start to desire holiness, not out of fear, not out of pressure, but because something in you has changed, something in you longs to be set apart for God. 1 Peter 1:15-16 says, "But just as he who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do. For it is written, 'Be holy because I am holy.'" Now, if that sounds intimidating, remember this isn't a demand to become perfect in your own strength. This is a reflection of the spirit's work inside of you. He's the one producing the desire for holiness. You just respond to it. Romans 8:5-9 gives us a clear picture. It says that those who live according to the Spirit set their minds on what the Spirit desires. That means when the Holy Spirit is in you, your thoughts start to shift. Your priorities start to realign. What used to entertain you now bothers you. What used to be funny now feels offensive. And not because you're trying to be religious, but because your heart is changing. You want purity. You want integrity. You want your words, your body, your time, and your lifestyle to reflect the God you love. Holiness becomes less about what you are avoiding and more about who you're becoming. And yes, this desire will cost you. There will be things you say no to, not because someone gave you rules, but because the spirit is guarding your heart. There will be relationships you step away from, places you stop going, content you stop consuming. Not out of legalism, but out of love. You don't want anything to dull your sensitivity to God. That's what it looks like to live set apart. That's what holiness is. Not sterile religion, but passionate devotion. You start to pray prayers like, "Lord, make me more like you." And you mean it. Even when it's uncomfortable, even when it means change. So, if you felt that quiet but growing desire to walk in purity, if you found yourself turning away from things you used to chase simply because you want to honor God, that's not just willpower. That's not just moral maturity. That is the spirit of holiness leading you into the life you were created for. And the amazing thing, the more you follow his leading, the more joy you'll find. Because holiness is not about restriction. It's about freedom. Freedom to walk closely with God with nothing in the way.
Number six, boldness to witness about Jesus. Something powerful happens when the Holy Spirit takes up residence in a believer. Fear begins to lose its grip. Where there once was hesitation, anxiety, or self-doubt, there comes a quiet but unmistakable boldness. A courage that isn't rooted in personality or confidence, but in the spirit of the living God. Acts 1:8 makes this connection clear. Jesus said, "But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you, and you will be my witnesses." Did you catch that? The very purpose of the Spirit's power is to give us boldness to testify, to speak about Jesus, to stand for the gospel, to be unashamed of the one who saved us. That doesn't mean you suddenly become loud or preachy. It means you stop being afraid to speak his name. You stop shrinking back when someone mocks your faith or asks about what you believe. You find words rising in your heart that you didn't rehearse. You share your testimony without overthinking. You invite someone to church. You offer to pray for a friend right there on the spot. And afterward, you think, "Where did that come from?" That's the Holy Spirit. He's giving you the boldness to witness. Paul talks about this in 2 Timothy 1:7-8. "For the spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love, and self-discipline. So do not be ashamed of the testimony about our Lord." The world is loud about everything else. People are bold about their opinions, their lifestyles, their truth. And yet so many Christians struggle to speak the name of Jesus out loud. Why? Because without the spirit's boldness, we naturally fear rejection, awkwardness, and offense. But when the spirit is in you, something shifts. The fear doesn't control you anymore. Your love for Jesus starts to outweigh your fear of people. And the beautiful thing is this boldness doesn't make you arrogant or aggressive. It makes you compassionate. You're not shouting to be heard. You're speaking because you care. You're sharing truth, not to win an argument, but to lead someone to life. That's the spirit at work. Truth and love flowing together. So, if you've started to feel that prompting to speak up, if you've had moments where you couldn't keep silent about what God has done for you, if you felt that fire in your heart to share Jesus even when your voice shakes, that's not just nerves. That's not just bravery. That's the Holy Spirit moving in you, giving you boldness to be a witness. Because when he's in you, the gospel won't stay hidden. It will rise in your voice, flow through your story, and touch the lives around you. Whether you're on a stage or simply sitting across from a friend.
Number seven, discernment and spiritual understanding. When the Holy Spirit lives in you, one of the clearest signs, though often overlooked, is that you begin to see differently. You don't just look at the world through natural eyes anymore. You start to notice deeper things. You sense when something isn't right. You recognize truth more clearly. It's called spiritual discernment. And it's one of the most vital signs that the spirit of God is active in your life. 1 Corinthians 2:12-14 says, "What we have received is not the spirit of the world, but the spirit who is from God, so that we may understand what God has freely given us. The person without the spirit does not accept the things that come from the spirit of God. But the person with the spirit makes judgments about all things." This isn't about being judgmental. It's about being spiritually awake. You start to feel a tug in your spirit when something is off, even if everyone around you says it's fine. You begin to separate truth from deception, light from darkness, spirit from flesh. Not because you're smarter, but because the spirit is showing you what your natural mind can't see. This discernment shows up in all kinds of ways. Maybe you're listening to a sermon, and something just doesn't sit right. Or you're watching a show, scrolling through social media, having a conversation, and suddenly you feel uneasy. You may not be able to explain it right away, but you know the spirit is alerting you. That's not paranoia. That's protection. Jesus called the Holy Spirit the Spirit of Truth in John 16:13. He said, "When he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all truth." That means the Spirit doesn't just help you avoid lies. He leads you into truth. He sharpens your mind, aligns your thoughts with scripture, and teaches you how to walk in wisdom when everything around you is confusing. Over time, you'll notice that your decisions aren't based just on logic, emotion, or pressure anymore. They're rooted in prayer, in peace, in discernment. You'll start to ask, "What is the spirit saying?" Before you say yes to something, you'll filter opportunities, relationships, and even teaching through the lens of truth. And that's the evidence. That's the sign. You're not just living by impulse or information. You're being led by revelation. And don't underestimate this gift. In a world drowning in opinions, half-truths, and spiritual counterfeits, discernment is not optional. It's essential. The fact that you even want to know what's true, the fact that you're praying for wisdom, testing spirits, comparing things to God's word, that's not legalism. That's not fear. That is the Holy Spirit protecting you, guiding you, maturing you. So, if your spiritual senses are getting sharper, if you've started seeing things differently than before, if you feel that inner alarm when something doesn't honor God, or that quiet confirmation when something aligns with his will, that's not just good instinct. That's the spirit of God giving you discernment. Because when he lives in you, he will not leave you blind. He will teach you, remind you, and lead you in truth. Step by step, decision by decision, moment by moment.
Conclusion: He's closer than you think. So, let's step back and look at what we've seen. Seven signs, seven powerful, deeply biblical evidences that the Holy Spirit isn't just a concept, but a living, active presence inside you. You've seen how he gives you a new heart. How he produces fruit in your life. How he stirs up hunger for God's word. How he convicts you not to shame you but to lead you home. How he creates a desire for holiness, fills you with boldness to witness, and sharpens your discernment so you can walk in truth in a world filled with confusion. And maybe as you listened, something started to click. Maybe you saw yourself in those signs. Maybe you realized, "Wait, I've felt that. I've noticed that. I've changed in that way." That's not coincidence. That's not self-improvement. That's not emotional hype. That's the Holy Spirit. He's been at work in you, whether you fully realized it or not. And if you've seen even one of those signs in your life, no matter how small, no matter how fragile it feels, that's a reason to stop, thank God, and know that he's with you. He's in you. You are not alone in this walk.
But maybe you also realize something else. Maybe you felt a longing, a hunger for more. Maybe you don't see all seven signs yet, but you want to. That's good. That longing, that hunger, that desire to go deeper. That too is the spirit drawing you. The goal of this message isn't to make you question your salvation or compare yourself to someone else's walk. It's to help you see that the evidence of God's spirit is real, and it grows. It matures. It multiplies as you surrender more fully to him.
So, wherever you are right now, whether you're full of faith or full of questions, I want to remind you of this. The same spirit who raised Jesus from the dead lives in you. He's your comforter, your guide, your teacher, your convictor, your strength, and your helper. He's not far. He's near. He's not silent. He's speaking. He's not waiting for you to earn his presence. He's inviting you to recognize it. If you're seeing the signs, rejoice. If you're not yet seeing them, ask. God loves to fill those who are hungry for him. Luke 11:13 says, "How much more will your Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him?" So ask, seek, surrender. Because the Holy Spirit doesn't just want to touch your life. He wants to transform it. And when he does, you'll never be the same.
