What NOT to Do After Mortal Sin

Ascension Presents4:56

Transcription

I'm Father Mark Mary with Franciscan Friars of the Renewal, and this is Ascension Presents. So here's what we're going to talk about. We're going to talk about what not to do after you commit mortal sin.

We've talked already before, like, what you do if you commit mortal sin. If you fall into sin, namely, you get your butt to confession as soon as possible, right? Um, you just put to put your eyes on the Lord and His goodness and His mercy, and you just run to it. You just run to it as soon as you can. Um, make a good confession, be receive absolution, be renewed, and be restored, and and begin again. That's what we do. Boom.

Okay, here's what not to do, and what a common temptation is going to be. Um, a regular temptation after a person commits mortal sin is to repeat the sin because, well, I have to go to confession anyway, right? That's that's a real temptation. There's just there's there's a number of factors involved in it, but part of it's just this like, I already got to go, I already got to make this confession. Like, what's it matter if I have to confess doing it one time or four times?

First of all, let's name it. That's that's the sin of presumption. We're presuming on God's mercy. So if we do this, when we go to confession, we want to include in our confession, um, the sin of presumption. I repeated this sin knowing I was going to come to confession. So that's the sin of presumption.

Here's why it's particularly an ugly sin, which is why we want to address it. And then and then we're going to look at some of the effects of it. This is why the devil loves presumption. First of all, it gets us vulnerable. Gets us already beaten up, and then he's gonna invite us to repeat the sin. And now what we're doing, if we're doing it because I already have to go to confession, now we're sinning against God's mercy, right? Where we're taking advantage of God because of how good He is. Um, it's like, yeah, I know, you know what? I know I'm going to go, and God is so merciful that He's going to forgive me, and He's going to restore me to life through it, through a good confession, right? And because I know that's there, and I'm gonna go take advantage of that, that great sacrament, that great sign of God's mercy, because of how good He is, I'm gonna go ahead and just go ahead and sin a few more times, just offend Him a few more times. Um, and right, the devil's always trying to mock the Lord. And, um, and it's a great mockery against His mercy, the sin of presumption.

And so I, I just, I want to be strong here because it's a real, it's a real temptation and real inclination that a lot of people have if they fall into mortal sin, repeat the sin. I have to go to confession anyway. No, no. Um, we don't want to add to a sin of weakness, the sin of of this. You don't want to be that guy. You don't want to be the guy who takes advantage of the Lord for His goodness, you know?

Okay, and then secondly, is this. Is we have to remember the effects of sin are real. Um, the sin of presumption, it's it's ugly. It's really ugly, but it's also really painful and hurtful to us. As we sin, it affects affects others and it affects ourselves. Now, if we repeat a given sin a number of times, right? It's going to start to form this a deeper attraction for inclination towards it. It's going to start to build this vice in us. And so if we repeat the sin, we go to confession. If each time you fall, you fall a whole bunch of times, your likeliness of falling again in the future is going to be exponentially increased because that habit is going to be developed, that vice is going to be developed. And so, and so we don't want to commit the sin of presumption, right? We, if we fall into mortal sin, we go to confession right away, and we don't repeat the sin because I have to go to confession anyway. Number one, because we want to reverence and respect God's mercy. But number two, like, we don't want to hurt ourselves and we don't want to be more likely to keep repeating that sin in the future.

It's a real challenge. It's a real temptation, and I get that. And so this is where we just want to be strong with this. Like, if you fall into mortal sin, get to confession, get to the Lord's mercy as soon as possible. Don't allow the devil to get in there with this temptation, but you're going to say like, whatever, just do it anyway. Like, just do it again. You already got a confession. You don't want to add the sin of mockery under the Lord's mercy, and also you don't want to hurt yourself and set yourself up for more failure or more falls in the future.

Um, it's a short video. Uh, it's a, it's a this is a shorter one, but I think it's a super important topic to address. Um, so thank you for watching. Thank you for praying. Remember, we are pilgrims on the third. Somos peregrinos. Poco a poco, little by little. But I'm gonna say, you go. We're gonna make it. God bless you.
