What to expect when a narcissistic parent dies. What actually happens when a narcissistic parent dies. It's not what most people expect.
In this video, I'll walk you through the complex emotions, family reactions, and deeper healing work that surfaces when grieving someone who never showed up for you emotionally and was often the source of many of your struggles, wounds, and traumas. I'm Jerry Wise and for over 45 years, I've helped thousands of people just like you break free from narcissistic and dysfunctional family dynamics, build their true self, and finally have a life of emotional freedom, true inner peace, and healthy relationships.
First of all, when a narcissistic parent dies, you might feel mixed emotions or mixed reactions. You may feel relief, freedom from control, criticism or manipulation because through their death they have done a no contact with you. Guilt or shame may surface for not grieving the way others expect. The real grief might be for the parent you never had, not the one who passed away. Emotional numbness is normal, especially if emotional detachment happened long before the narcissistic parent died.
Secondly, when a narcissistic parent dies, we can have conflicted memories and these are normal. You may remember both painful and pleasant moments and that can feel confusing. The emotional mix of good times and deep wounds can complicate the grieving process.
Thirdly, family dysfunction doesn't end when a narcissistic parent dies. Triangulating, scapegoating, and toxic roles may escalate. Family members might rewrite history or deny the reality you experienced with this parent. You may be pressured to perform grief or pretend the relationship with the narcissistic parent was healthy and shamed into never speaking ill of the dead even though they were horrible.
If this is resounding with you, I invite you to join my free self- differentiation training where I share 13 key practices to help you break free from the narcissistic and dysfunctional family systems. And if you're looking for a full guided process, the Road to Self program is there when you're truly ready to get your family out of you and finally find peace, clarity, and your true self.
Fourthly, you may grieve the narcissistic parent you never had. You might mourn the parent you always wished existed. The death of a narcissistic parent can mark the end of hope for apologies, changing, or real connection.
Fifthly, there is often no closure after narcissistic parent dies. Closure is rarely given. No apology, no validation, no acknowledgement, and no justice. Old pain, unmet needs, and unresolved anger related to the narcissistic parent may resurface.
Six, grieving a narcissistic parent doesn't follow the rules that confuses people and society often expects a certain kind of grief that doesn't match your truth. You may feel isolated for not grieving in the expected way. Don't use normal rules for abnormal relationships, even when grieving the passing of a narcissistic parent.
Well, how do we heal after a narcissistic parent dies? You don't owe anyone a public performance of grief. You're allowed to define what the death of a narcissistic parent means for you. Their death can be a new stage of emotional separation and self- differentiation. But this won't happen with just time alone. Grieve the relationship you never had with them and the relationship you never had with yourself because of them. A narcissistic parent can live inside of your mind long after they are gone. Healing means working to get them out of you through the work of self-ifferiation.
