Not in a manipulative way. In a contextual way. Understanding that the content of what someone says is only part of the information available in an interaction, and that the emotional context, the frustration, the anxiety, the excitement that underlies what someone is saying matters enormously for accurately interpreting the message.

If you want to develop this kind of listening, the entry point is relatively simple. In your next important conversation, try maintaining two separate tracks of awareness. What the person is saying and how they're reasoning. Don't respond to the "what" until you've also processed the "how." One more extension I want to make on the habit of looking for disconfirming evidence. The goal of seeking disconfirming evidence isn't to make yourself maximally uncertain. It's to make yourself accurately certain. There's a crucial distinction.

When you actively look for evidence against your position and you find very little, that actually increases your justified confidence in that position. You've done the work of trying to disprove it and it held up. That's a meaningful signal. Conversely, when you look for disconfirming evidence and find a lot of it, that's equally important information. Your confidence was misplaced and now you know. The trap that most people fall into isn't excessive doubt. It's the opposite, excessive certainty built on an incomplete information base. When you never deliberately seek evidence against your positions, you're operating on a sample of reality that's systematically biased toward confirming what you already believe. And over a lifetime, decisions made on that biased sample tend to compound into seriously suboptimal outcomes.

What the research on expert decision-making shows is that the best decision-makers are neither maximally uncertain nor maximally confident. They hold beliefs at levels of confidence that actually correspond to the evidence. They're highly confident about things that have been thoroughly tested and held up under scrutiny, and appropriately uncertain about things that haven't. That calibration, and it's always a work in progress, is what separates sophisticated thinking from both arrogant certainty and paralytic doubt.

And finally, because it's worth saying clearly before we close for real, the habits we've talked about today don't exist in isolation from each other. They form a coherent orientation toward the world.
