What Running Does To Your Body

I'm 8% body fat, deadlift three plates, and run marathons today. But two years ago, a 20-minute jog exposed how unfit I actually was. And before you think running made you lose muscle, it didn't. It made me look better, leaner, more defined, better pumps.

Most gym bros think cardio kills gains. But that's just lazy people trying to justify avoiding the cardio. The truth is, running improved my physique in ways lifting alone never did. And I'm going to show you exactly what happened to my body when I added running. Because yeah, I was terrified it will make me small. But let me tell you why I even tried it in the first place.

Two years ago, I thought I was fit. I looked the part 10 to 12% body fat, veins popping, could deadlift couple plates. Then I had the brilliant idea. Let me try going for a 20-minute jog. Just a little run, nothing crazy, not even fast. 3 minutes in, I realized really quickly that my cardio was nowhere. I genuinely felt like a fat, unhealthy piece of And I remember thinking, "How the hell can I deadlift and squat this much weight, but can't jog without tasting blood."

That moment punched me in the face. I looked fit, but I wasn't. Because this shift didn't start with some perfect program. It started with me realizing I wasn't actually fit for life. I was just good at lifting weights. I remember the exact jog 2 years ago, beginning of December. I was feeling confident. I thought I'd cruise through these 20 minutes of running. 3 minutes in, everything was falling apart already. And I remember thinking, "This is actually pathetic. I look fit, but I'm not." I was embarrassed by myself. That was the first time I ever thought, "Okay, maybe lifting didn't make me as healthy as I thought." And I made a promise that day. I'm going to fix this. I want to look good and be fit. I want real health, not just to look good in the mirror.

But I'll be honest, I almost didn't start running seriously because I just had the fear every gym bro has. Running will make me small. I didn't want to lose 14 years of muscle for cardio. But the truth no gym bro wants to admit is the fear isn't losing muscle. The fear is looking stupid because you're bad at something. Or maybe that's just my fear. And running exposes you. It humbles you. It shows you how unfit you actually are.

So I started running. But I also kept my entire bodybuilding routine. Five gym days, 90-minute sessions, 20 sets per muscle. Within a month, I was cooked. Every run felt terrible. My lifts were dropping. Everything hurt. So, I had to make a change. And I cut my gym time in half. 5 days became three. 90 minutes became 45. Push-pull legs, high intensity, low volume. And that's when everything clicked.

Adding running didn't shrink me. It actually improved everything. My abs got leaner without counting calories. My shoulders and arms look sharper because fat dropped in all the right places. And my appetite went up, which let me eat more food and actually build more muscle. My pumps got insane because my heart finally was working. And my training capacity exploded. I could lift harder, recover faster, and handle more intensity. And the weirdest part, running made me look more athletic, more proportionate, more powerful, more of that Greek godlike aesthetic look. More like someone who can actually do. Not just someone who can take nice pictures in down lighting.

I'm not going to sit here and pretend I'm Peter Atia or Huberman. I'm not giving you a lecture. I'm giving you the simple truth. Running made my heart stronger. And I noticed it in the gym immediately. Better heart equals better performance. Better performance equals better physique. It's literally that simple. And here's the part I love. I can eat more now. Say yes to dessert. And say yes to the damn cookie. Those cookies are honestly like 50% of the reason I go running. I'm not pretending I live on raw, unprocessed monk food. I had that face and life's more fun with cookies. Now I run. I lift. I look good. I eat cookies. I'm happy.

There's something running gives you that no other cardio does. Cycling is cool. Swimming is miserable. Stair master is fine. But running, running hits your soul. Endorphins are insane. You finish a run and you feel like you could take over the world. Your brain quiets down. Your whole body feels alive in a way. Lifting never gave me. Give it a couple weeks, just a few honest runs. And you'll feel it, too. It's unmatched.

Adding running didn't change my physique the most. It changed my identity. I went from looking fit but being unfit, being scared of cardio, avoiding hard conditioning, pretending strength is enough to someone who is strong, lean, fit, athletic, and actually ready for life. And honestly, the system is quite simple. It's two to three easy runs per week, one harder speed session, three days of lifting, push-pull legs, 45 to 60-minute sessions, high intensity, low volume, every set to failure, eat enough food, and stick to mostly unprocessed foods. Recover properly, no crazy plan, no nonsense, just consistency.

So, if you're a gym bro scared of losing muscle, I get it, man. I was in the same place. I was you. But running didn't take anything from me. It gave me everything I didn't know I was missing. And look, you don't have to be a marathon runner. Just start. Just try. Give it a few weeks. You might be surprised what happens because I was and it changed my
