[Music] So special friends, so let's talk about modalities, which is something we have to have a really good grasp on in order to have really good building blocks when it comes to our understanding of astrology.
So modalities are modes of operation. Sometimes they're called quadrupedalisticities. They describe three broad categories of temperament. There are the cardinal signs, the fixed signs, and the mutable signs.
Cardinal signs are the signs that rule the angles of the chart. The first, the fourth, the seventh, and the tenth are the angles of the chart. So Aries, Cancer, Libra, and Capricorn are the cardinal signs, and the first, the fourth, the seventh, and the tenth houses are cardinal houses.
The cardinal points of a compass is what they actually represent. With Aries, the Sun rises in the east, that's the ascendant. Capricorn, the Sun reaches its highest point in the sky, that is the south. With Libra, the Sun then sets in the west. And with Cancer, the Sun loses its directional strength, and this rest represents the dark of midnight when the Sun is at its weakest.
So imagine the Sun moving from the 1st to the 10th house, to the seventh house, and then back to the fourth house, to the first house. When astrologers refer to the east, they are referring to the ascendant itself.
Cardinal signs assure us into new seasons. They're the beginning of something. They represent an invention unfolding. They are also creative signs, not creative in the artistic sense, but creative in the way that they bring something into being that wasn't there before. They actually create.
The Sun comes into Aries at the vernal equinox, which is the beginning of spring. The Sun comes into Cancer at the summer solstice. The Sun comes into Libra at the autumnal equinox. The Sun comes into Capricorn at the winter solstice.
Cardinal signs are therefore about the initial stages of something, of taking off with something, about starting new things. Commencement, commencement is a really good word for cardinal signs. So an abundance of planets in cardinal signs will point to a personality that is about something new, taking action on something, initiation. Initiation is a really good word as well to associate with cardinal signs.
