Self-Deliverance 101: Your step-by-step guide to self-deliverance. Self-Deliverance made simple.
In Proverbs 6:3 it says, "So do this, my son, and deliver yourself." Now, of course, it's referring to a person to not get involved with sinful behaviors and do these particular instructions and be delivered from traps, lies, and destruction. Proverbs 6:5, a few verses down, it says, "Deliver yourself like a gazelle from the hand of a hunter, and like a bird from the hand of a fowler." Now, it deals with debt, not with demons. So, I just want to make it very clear, but the idea in the Bible we see is this: that deliverance from demonic powers happens through the name of Jesus, the blood of Jesus, the word of God, and the Holy Spirit. These mighty weapons are available to all believers. Revelation 12:1: "And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony, and they did not love their lives unto the death."
Now, I want to make a disclaimer. There is really not one precedent in the scripture where you can deliver yourself from a demon. What we do see in the Bible when it comes to deliverance is it's a command and assignment to Jesus's followers to do deliverance on other people. Cast demons out. Unlike healing and even getting saved, which could happen without anybody being present. With deliverance, we don't see this particular formula or a method of getting delivered without the help of others.
Now, this does not mean though that God cannot deliver right there where you are at through a video, through a book, through you renouncing things and experiencing freedom. This doesn't mean that God cannot do that. It's more of extra-biblical, not anti-biblical. I've seen many testimonies though of God delivering people, pastors, leaders, and others who would watch a video, who would read a book, pray the prayer, and then that would take place with nobody being present. Sometimes, those people still needed additional prayer, but the initial breakthrough that they would receive in the beginning gave them enough juice and enough firepower to now keep on going and then receive eventually a prayer where they can be delivered completely.
So, maybe you are in that state today where you need to be delivered. The place where you can start is this way. Let me give you just 10 practical steps that you can be aware of when it comes to self-deliverance. If you are able to get prayer in the church or by another believer, that is the biblical way and that is the most effective way. But God is able, in His mercy and kindness, to extend His grace even for those of you who are not able to go to church because of where you live or receive prayer because nobody maybe is around you who believes in deliverance.
Number one: Recognize that there is a demonic activity or an open door. Desperation is the key to deliverance. You have to be desperate, and you have to recognize that you have a problem. If you don't think you have a demon, then typically you won't be looking for deliverance, and I don't personally think God is going to force it on you, which explains why Jesus didn't deliver Judas and Peter didn't deliver Ananias and Sapphira. He says, you know, that the demon placed it in your heart. Jesus, the Bible clearly says, the demon entered Judas, but deliverance wasn't done on them, and how is that possible? Because God doesn't force it on us. If you don't want it, it is what it is. God delivers us from our enemies, not from our friends. And so there has to be a recognition, "Hey, this is not just the flesh. This is not just me trying. I just need to try harder. This is a spiritual problem, and I need help."
The second thing is you need to repent. Repentance is about confessing your faith in Christ, confessing any known sins, and it's also closing any door through that repentance. Repentance closes those doors. Repentance disconnects you from the demonic world and it washes those sins through the blood of Jesus Christ. And a lot of times, people are wondering, "What should I repent of?" You know, you repent for the known sins, especially the ones that led to this problem, this spiritual problem. I remember when I was addicted to pornography, and the Lord led me to recognize that it was more spiritual than physical. I was led to repent for the first time that I was exposed to pornography, the second time, and any other time that was highlighted, and there was that deep repentance before the Lord that I believe set me up for deliverance.
The third step of self-deliverance, step by step, and that is renouncing any contact with the devil or the occult. 2 Corinthians 4:2 says that, "We have renounced the hidden things of shame, not walking in craftiness, nor handling the word of God deceitfully." So what you want to do is you want to renounce any contracts, contact you've had with false religions or with the occult. Renounce any soul ties that you have had, maybe with somebody in a false religion like a priest or like a guru or someone that you mashed yourself with or you had sexual intercourse with that was introducing you to the demonic.
Number four: Remove any demonic objects. Things that are used mainly to consult the occult. Things that are used as the means to connect with the other realm illegally, if I could say, spiritually not permitted by the word of God. You know, trying to read the future through the stars and horoscopes and Ouija boards and all of these things, dream catchers, charms, and so forth and so on. So you want to remove those things from your possession and your life.
Number five: Relinquish unforgiveness and bitterness. This is huge. Forgiving, asking God to forgive you is one thing, forgiving another person is another one. A lot of people do not experience deliverance because of unforgiveness. I like to say like this: If you hold on to bitterness, the devil will hold you in bondage. When you release, relinquish your need to punish them, your need to be the judge, the jury, and the executioner. If you relinquish that and you put them into God's hands and you say, "Lord, I forgive them for what they did," not because it's fair, not because they deserve it, and not even because they asked for it. It's because I care more about being free than about it being fair. I don't want this to be repeated for the rest of my life. I want to be disconnected from the trauma and the pain of the past, and that is a huge step. So many people, the moment they get to this part, right away they experience freedom, they experience deliverance begins to happen in their life.
Number six: Release yourself in the name of Jesus. You can literally follow these steps that I'm just giving you and just verbally begin to release yourself from that curse. Release yourself from that unclean spirit in Jesus' name.
Number seven: You want to resist the devil, who will seek to gain control again. James 4:7 says, "Resist the devil and he will flee from you." So releasing yourself, you may feel something leave you. You may cough it out, yell it out, vomit it out. There are other people that... all people experience it differently, physical manifestation. Sometimes we don't experience necessarily anything super physical. We just sense, take a deep breath and breathe it out, and we feel a sense of release and we feel lighter. It's important that we also continue to resist the devil, who will seek to gain control again or to lie to us.
Number eight: Replace whatever the Lord has delivered you with God's word. So if God delivered you from these demonic things, your goal isn't just to remove bad stuff. God wants to replace it. Now, where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty. It's not just about where the demons are out, there is liberty. Liberty, freedom is not just when you get the bad things out, it's when you replace the bad with good. So God wants to replace those things. So if you were involved in certain habits, in certain ways that were, you know, demonic in nature, the goal isn't just to have an empty, boring life. The goal is now to live a life full for Jesus and fully in revival for the Lord.
Number nine is you want to renew your mind to your new identity in Jesus Christ. The old identity is, "I'm oppressed. I'm a victim. I'm possessed," and so forth and so on. Fear, anxiety, heaviness, that's just who I was. That's the old identity. Renewing of the mind helps to break down the strongholds. In John 8:32 it says, "You shall know the truth and the truth will set you free." God's truth, the name of Jesus, by the power of the Holy Spirit, gets the demons out. The truth of Jesus by the power of the Holy Spirit breaks down the strongholds, and these strongholds are built in the mind. You can be totally free, forgive other people, and experience release from whatever spirits that were tormenting your life, but if you don't actively engage in discipleship and renewing your mind by reading the scriptures regularly and applying them into your life, adjusting your attitude with the truth of God's word, you might experience same suffering and pain, not because you're not free, but because you're mentally bound. God's word breaks mental strongholds, and we need that freedom both in our soul and in our mind.
Number ten: Remain rooted in the local church and a small group. Why is that important? When God breaks generational curses, He wants to place you in His new generation. You are a new generation. You are a royal priesthood. You are His holy people. When people experience deliverance but they do not get grounded and planted in the church, it's really skipping discipleship. When you skip discipleship, you might not walk in dominion and victory that God has for you because you are just a small part in Jesus's body, you are not the whole piece. So think of like when you go to the store and you buy this product, for example, let's say a table. It comes in pieces. What you do is you assemble it together, and then it becomes one whole. You are not a church. We are the church. The word 'church' means an assembly. Now, when I come in the room like right now, I am by myself in this studio. Okay, I'm not an assembly. People together make it an assembly. So you are not a church, we are a church. The church is the body, it's not just one member. Vlad is not just the finger, it's all the members put together. When you skip that process and you say, "No, all I need is just get the demons out. I don't need to be planted in the local church," then you skip on the discipleship part, and you honestly could be going from deliverance to deliverance instead of from deliverance to dominion. To go from deliverance to dominion, you have to go through discipleship because the ultimate goal for your creation on this earth is to have dominion. God didn't create you for deliverance, He created you for dominion, but many of us never get to dominion because we skip discipleship. We get church hurt, like, "I don't want to trust people again. I don't want to go to any place." And so I want to invite you to embrace God's gift for you to set you free completely by recognizing that the problem that you have could be spiritual. Number two, repenting. Confessing your faith in Christ and confessing any known sins. Renouncing any known occult involvement. Removing any demonic objects, number four. Number five, relinquishing unforgiveness and bitterness. Number six, releasing yourself in the name of Jesus. Number seven, resisting the devil who will seek to gain control again. Number eight, replacing whatever God delivered you with God's word. Number nine, renewing your mind to your new identity in Jesus, and number ten, remaining grounded and rooted in a local church as a form of your discipleship so you can go from deliverance to dominion.
