Why couldn't Ned close the portal in Spider-Man: No Way Home? Remember the scene?
"Got it. Close it."
"Ned, it's not closing."
"Yeah, I know."
"Why is it closing it?"
"I... I don't know."
"Did you close it before? Did you?"
"No."
"No. I mean, I've opened some."
Now, here's the thing. Ned has always been obsessed with Spider-Man and the Avengers.
"Getting cranked in the neck by Nick Fury. Probably the coolest thing that ever happened to me." Anyway, so in that final battle when he opened a portal, what did he see? Three Spider-Man versus five villains. Right in the middle of one of the most iconic places in the world. Would you want to shut that down? Exactly.
Instead of focusing, Ned was distracted. Almost like he wanted to keep watching. And here's the proof. When he first opened a portal and Andrew Garfield's Spider-Man came through, the second Ned said, "I opened the wrong portal to the wrong Peter Parker." That portal closed instantly. Why? Because nothing on the other side really held his attention.
But during the final fight, yeah, he couldn't resist.
