Donald Trump's incompetence, weakness, and instability is on display again. Because now, via social media, he's announcing that the United States is once again engaging in a full-fledged war with Iran.
Now, technically, there has been a ceasefire with Iran since April. And I say "ceasefire" with air quotations because it hasn't really been there. We've exchanged fire with Iran. Iran has exchanged fire with us. But now, given some recent news from the Strait of Hormuz, Donald Trump is saying, "Yep, we're going back in. It's happening once again and there's nothing you can do about it."
It is just utter insanity that this is the guy who, less than 24 hours ago, told us a deal with Iran would be happening in the next couple of days. Fast forward to now, he's saying, "Nope, war is back on. We're doing it." So, let me show you what Donald Trump said on social media. We'll take a look at some clips and just talk about the news broadly.
At 12:38 p.m. today, Trump said, "I have just been informed by our great military that last night the Iranians shot down one of our highly sophisticated Apache helicopters while patrolling over the Strait of Hormuz. There were two pilots involved. Both are safe and uninjured. Nevertheless, the United States must of necessity respond to this attack. Thank you for your attention to this matter." Signed, Donald J. Trump.
Now, first and foremost, I am very, very glad that, you know, the pilots and everybody on board are safe and there were no injuries, there were no deaths. I think that is the most important thing in this conversation when we're talking about the war in Iran is our troops who are serving abroad because of Donald Trump, I might add. But that, first and foremost, is some good news.
But also, my concern is when Donald Trump says "we must respond," it's like, what is that kind of response going to look like? What is that response going to look like? With Donald Trump, he changes his mind on the go. He will one second think one thing, the next he'll change his mind and do another. And so this response could be something minor. It could be something major and put our troops in harm's way. We will have to see.
But nonetheless, this helicopter was shot down while Donald Trump was at Madison Square Garden, asleep on camera and getting booed by the fans. He's too busy going to sporting events and not being president of the United States, I might add. That him at MSG last night was his 17th sporting event since being president. He's just loves hanging out with his friends.
CNN also reporting with this new analysis that Donald Trump has said the war will be over within days at least 37 times before. This is like a common thing with Donald Trump. It comes as President Trump declares the war with Iran could be over within days as the two sides come closer to an agreement. But President Trump has also made similar declarations about the war at least 37 times before.
So let's go live now to CNN senior White House correspondent Kristen Holmes. Um, so is this time any different, Kristen? I think that's the the bottom line question here.
Yeah. And I'm really glad somebody finally took the time to count out how many times, 'cause it felt like we were saying it every single day. And now I know it was at least 37 times in the last two months since this ceasefire began.
37 times in the last two months. That means over, uh, like basically for a month straight, Donald Trump has been saying that the war is about to be over in, in, you know, two, two days or three days or whatever. That means, on average, mathematically, every other day, Donald Trump or somebody in his administration has been saying the war is about to end. Matter of fact, last night, after Donald Trump left Madison Square Garden, he said, "This is a real quote, two or three days, we have a very good chance of doing it."
Just look. Uh, we are going to issue a report tomorrow, but the pilots are fine.
Did you say two or three days or two or three weeks?
Two or three days. You'll be signing a piece of...
No, no, we have a good chance of doing it. We should be able to do it in one hour if you want to know the truth.
The biggest sticking point right now.
Uh, I don't think there are any sticking points. I think we're very in, we're, uh, we're very close to having a very, very good, strong, powerful deal.
Uh, very, very close to having a good, strong, powerful deal. Donald Trump says that's a lot of adjectives. A lot of adjectives that are certainly not applicable to whatever deal Donald Trump is negotiating behind the scenes.
I just want to also add that let's just say tomorrow Donald Trump comes out and says there's a deal. You know, we've struck something with Iran. It's great. We're confident in it. There's a deal. Whatever that deal might be is probably going to be terrible for the United States and nowhere near the caliber of Obama's nuclear deal. It's going to include some major concessions. There's been rumors that Donald Trump even is planning to include something about giving Iran money, just like straight up handing them a bunch of cash, like billions upon billions of dollars. There's probably not going to be a word on their nuclear program. The latest rumor on the deal is that there's going to be a negotiating period after this is signed, a negotiating period to talk about their nuclear program. Not that anything is final, but just to talk about their nuclear program. That doesn't sound, uh, very solid to me.
He also said on the tarmac last night, just generally about Iran, "I think it's going well. Okay." And he also thinks he didn't get booed at Madison Square Garden. So if you're wondering whether Donald Trump is delusional, I think we have more than enough evidence to provide that conclusion, given this quote and everything he has said recently.
And just the other day, in a Fox News interview as well, Donald Trump called Iran a "total win" before also demanding that the Strait of Hormuz be reopened. He then adds that he doesn't need the strait. This all took place within minutes. A cognitive decline moment, maybe for Donald Trump.
"Don't watch the news. But, uh, that was very unpopular. As soon as I won, it became unbelievably popular. Well, we're winning Iran. It's a total win for us. I mean, we had to do it. Look, two things with number one, the strait has to be opened immediately and has to be free, no tolls, etc., etc. And number two is they can't have a nuclear weapon. That's all there is. It's very simple. And then we're going to get out of there. And we don't need this trade. You know, we don't need it 'cause we have more. So, we produce now because of us, me, we produce more oil."
Great. So, it's a complete success according to Donald Trump. They need to open the strait, but we also don't need the strait. That's just wonderful. That's just absolutely fantastic.
And just the other day, regarding the Middle East, Trump was utterly humiliated. He told Axios that he will ask Netanyahu not to strike back at Iran after Iran fired missiles at Israel. And then what happened? Well, Netanyahu fired missiles at Iran anyway. He was embarrassed. Donald Trump tried to pretend to be this macho guy who has everything under control, no worries, just for it to completely backfire and him to be humiliated. I mean, that's what happened.
This whole thing that Donald Trump has been running in politics his entire career is that he's the strong leader who other people fear. Any nation, any leader, no matter how big or small, fears Donald Trump. That's what he's been going with for decades now. And that couldn't be further from the truth. You see it play out in real time.
And of course, Donald Trump is being called out for his Iran statement saying that we're going to be getting involved in a war with them once again. Might as well say Trump previously said Iran's military had been completely obliterated. And I just have a question for the MAGA people. If Donald Trump's claim is true, that Iran's military had been completely obliterated, their navy is on the sea floor, then how are they able to shoot down our helicopters, our highly sophisticated helicopters, I might add? That's using Donald Trump's own wording. Like, how does that work, MAGA? I mean, you know, if the military is destroyed, you'd think they wouldn't be able to do that, but they're very much doing that.
Uh, here's Chuck Schumer, Senate Minority Leader. "American soldiers were shot down in Iran as Trump was wasting taxpayer dollars to fall asleep while watching the Knicks. Each day, this illegal war drags on further exposes the president's recklessness," which is a very accurate statement.
And Jojo from Jur saying, "So Iran, a country whose military we've destroyed, quote, was able to shoot down one of our Apache helicopters during a ceasefire in the middle of a war that isn't a war which is 2 days away from ending." A very apt summary of the arguments that are coming from this administration.
Jessica Tarlov, our favorite liberal on Fox News. "Everyone keeps telling me the war is over and Iran's military is decimated, and yet Iran is shooting down American aircraft. Suspicious, isn't it? Suspicious." It's just remarkable the line of reasoning from this administration.
