Reality is a combination medication. It's an anti-depressant that works very differently than other anti-depressants because it combines dextromethorphan, which is common in your cough medications and cough syrups, and bupropion.
But why are we combining a cough syrup and bupropion? What is the benefit there?
Dextromethorphan acts similarly in the fact that it antagonizes the NMDA receptors. Antagonizing the NMDA receptor sites actually increases glutamate. Glutamate is our excitatory neurotransmitter.
And in depression, especially treatment-resistant depression, people are experiencing a lack of energy, low mood, low motivation. Increasing glutamate can help give them the boost that they need and motivation they need, plus energy to get through the day.
