This is what literally separates the 95% of people who fail and the 5% that succeed is by shifting your identity. This is the secret to change. It's not one layer, it's four.
The outside you have actions like going to the gym, applying for a job, etc. Deeper than actions, you have your emotions. These normally dictate what actions you take. Often times we say things, "I didn't feel like it," "I feel like I don't want to do it anymore."
But what's driving your emotions are the next layer: beliefs. These are stories you tell about yourself that cause the emotion and limit you. "I'm too young," "I'm too old," "It's too late," "It's never going to happen," etc. But the deepest layer for you is your identity.
Now, here's the secret 95% of people don't know. To create change, you don't do what most people do, going from the outside in. What you need to do, and the secret, is to go from the inside out. Who gets more results? The person who says, "I'm trying to reduce my cigarette smoking" (actions), or the person who says, "I'm not a smoker"? It takes zero willpower if it's an identity for you.
So, the secret to change is stop focusing on what you want and start focusing on who you need to become.
