In this crochet tutorial, I will be showing you how to crochet these absolutely beautiful granny squares. So, these are puffed corn granny squares. So, I've worked up two samples here to show you. We have got one which has been done all in the same color with a slightly larger hook, and this is how that one's looking. And then I've done one in a variegated yarn as well with a small hook. So, I just wanted to show you how it looks worked solid, but also in the variegated.
Now, this is the front of the work. However, I actually prefer the back of the work when it comes to this particular granny square. And I think that's just because the puff stitches naturally puff out a bit more to the back of the work. So, you can see they're just a little bit more noticeable and they stick out a little bit more on the back of the work. On the front, they're actually not quite as poofy, if that makes sense. So, that is the front, and then this is the back.
So, it's absolutely beautiful done solid and variegated. It's completely up to you what yarn you want to use. You can use really thin yarn or a DK, even a chunky, whatever you like, and then just use whatever hook size your selected yarn recommends. So, I'm just going to be using a plain blue for this tutorial.
You'll be starting with your slip knots on your hook and you want to start with a chain six. So, yarn over, pull through. That's one, two, three, four, five, and six. You then go into slip stitch into that first chain to create a ring. So, insert your hook into that first chain, yarn over, and pull through both of those loops, and you've now got a center ring here.
So, you want to chain two, and then we're going to start our puff stitches. So, for our puff stitches, we want to yarn over and insert four times, okay? So, you're going to yarn over, insert into that center circle, yarn over and pull up. Keep it nice and loose and pull it up tall. So, that's once. Yarn over, insert, yarn over, pull up again, pull up nice and tall. That's two. Again, that's three. And one more. And at this point, you want to yarn over and pull through all of these loops on your hook, like so.
And we're going to create a corner space now. So, we want to chain three, and then we're going to do another puff stitch back into this circle. So, yarn over and insert, yarn over and pull up again, pull up tall. And again, that's twice. And again, that's three. One more time, and that's four. And then again, yarn over and pull through all of those loops.
And now we're going to work a side, as it were. We're going to start the side and we're going to do a chain two this time, okay? So, we've got two puff stitches separated by a chain three, and then we've got a chain two. And now we're going to do a new corner set of puff stitches. So, you'll do a puff stitch, chain three, puff stitch. So, just make sure you keep it nice and loose and pull up nice and tall each time. So, you do it four times for each puff stitch. We'll yarn over, pull through them all. We're doing a corner space, so we're chaining three, and then another puff stitch. And always make sure you don't drop any of those loops that are on your hook, okay?
So, we're doing a side space again now, so a chain two. So, we've now got two of our corners worked. So, now you want to do two more corners as well. So, you'll do puff stitch, chain three, puff stitch. Something to do my chain three, and then another. And then again, it's a side space, so I'm only chaining two. And then I need to do one final corner. So, puff stitch, chain three, puff stitch. That's my first one. Chain three, and then one final puff stitch. And then you want to do your final chain two, which will create the space for your side stitches.
And then we're going to slip stitch into this chain space after the very first puff stitch from the beginning of the round. So, you'll slip stitch into that chain space to close off this round. So, at this point, you should have four chain three corner spaces. Let me just take my hook out for one second. So, you'll have four chain three corner spaces, and then you'll have four chain two sides, and you'll have eight puff stitches.
So, we've slip stitched into that corner already. So, now we want to start our next round by chaining two. And then we're going to start with a new corner space. So, we'll do puff stitch into that chain three space, chain three to create your new corner, and then back into that same space, you'll do your next puff stitch. Chain one. And then into that chain two space below, after your next puff stitch, you'll do four treble crochets. So, please remember they are UK trebles. In the US, these are your double crochets. So, into that next chain two space, so you'll do four trebles. So, yarn over, insert into that space, yarn over and pull up, yarn over, pull through two, yarn over, pull through two. That's one, two, three, and four.
So, you've got puff stitch, chain three, puff stitch, chain one, and then four treble crochets. Chain one. And then you're at your corner chain three space. So, you're going to do your new corner into there. So, you'll do your puff stitch. Somebody's beeping. Someone's not happy. First puff stitch for your corner. You'll chain three for your new corner space, and then back into that same space, you'll do your next puff.
And then again, we're going to be working one of our straight sides. So, you want to chain one. And then into that next chain space, you will do your four trebles. The one, two, three, and four. Again, chain one. And you're at your next corner space. So, you should be able to continue that all the way around now, all being well. Pause or rewind if you're still not sure. You're at your next corner space now. So, you'll do your puff stitch, chain three, puff stitch, chain one, work your four trebles, chain one, and your next corner.
So, I've continued that now. I've done my final set of four trebles. Make sure you do your final chain one. And then again, we're going to slip stitch into that corner chain three space after this puff stitch to close off this round. So, that is how you should be looking at this point. It, it's a kind of pattern that gets much more noticeable the bigger it gets, if that makes sense.
So, again, now you'll chain two. And then you'll start with a new corner. So, you'll do puff stitch, chain three, puff stitch. Thank you. Chain one. And then we're ready to work our straight side. So, what we're going to do now, we're going to increase each side by four each time by working two trebles into the chain spaces either side of our sets of trebles. So, into this first space here, you will put two trebles. So, one and two. And then you will do one treble into the top of each stitch. So, that first one can sometimes get a little bit hidden, but make sure you go through the whole of the stitch. And so, you'll do one, two, three, and four. And then two trebles into that chain space just before your corner puff stitch. Chain one. And then you're ready to do your corner space. Chain one. And then again, you'll work your straight side. So, two trebles in that first space, and then one treble into the top of each stitch. So, as I say, your straight sides will increase by four each time. And then two into that final space. And then again, you're at your corner puff stitches. So, again, if you continue that all the way around. Okay, again, make sure you do your final chain one after your two trebles into that space. And then you're ready to slip stitch into that corner chain three space.
Okay, so your square should be growing now and looking like this. So, that's basically the the pattern, if that makes sense. You will just repeat that last round, but obviously increase by your four stitches each time. And then you can continue it to be whatever size you want. You can keep them small, you can make them really, really big. It's completely up to you. But you will follow that same principle of that last round each time. You'll do your puff stitch corners, and then you chain one, and then you'll do your two trebles, and then a treble into every treble, two trebles in your final space, chain one, corner puff stitch, and you'll just repeat that all the way around.
And then obviously, once you've got your squares to the size you want to be, if you're planning to join them, then you can use pretty much any joining method that you like. And then it would be up to you whether you join them straight as they are with like a slip stitch join or a double crochet seam join, or you can border them just with a round of normal treble crochets. And in which case, you will then be able to also do a join as you go method. So, when it comes to joining, it's totally up to you.
And if you were going to add, um, a round of trebles before you finished off, I'll just show you very quickly how I would do that. So, that chain two would count as my first one. And then I would do another treble into the corner space. I would chain three to create a new corner, and then do two trebles back in that space. And then I would start my straight side with two trebles in that chain one space. And then again, you would just work one into the top of each stitch all the way along. And that will just give you a border just to then join. But like I say, if you're planning to just do a seam join or a slip stitch join, you could literally do them straight off on one of the puff stitch rounds, it wouldn't matter at all. But if you did want to border them separately, you absolutely can. Again, two trebles in the last space, and then your corner space would be two trebles, chain three, two trebles. And then again, you're ready to start down the side. So, I just wanted to show you very quickly how I would continue that if I were adding as a plain border before I joined my smaller squares. But as I say, it's totally up to you.
