And according to recent surveys, it is the most used AI coding tool among small business owners and solo operators by a massive margin.
Now, here is the problem. Most people look at Claude Code and immediately think it is only for developers, or they see the price tag. The subscription can run you $100 to $200 a month for heavy use, and they close the tab. That is the mistake because what Claude Code actually does has way more to do with making money and building businesses than most people realize. And today, I am going to show you how to get the whole thing running for free.

You can also choose a model called `OpenRouter/free`, which auto-selects the best available free model at any given moment. That is the option I would recommend starting with if you just want to get up and running fast.
Here is a tip most people miss. You can set different models for different types of tasks inside Claude Code. For simple background tasks, you use a fast, free model. For something that needs more reasoning power, you bump up slightly, maybe spending a fraction of a cent. Smart model routing means you're almost never paying full price for anything.
