Dr. Laura: Is your name Kenyeta?
Kenyeta: Yes.
Dr. Laura: That's creative. All right. How can I help you?
Kenyeta: I am calling, because my 20 year old son, is on probation and in diversion.
Dr. Laura: I'm sorry, on probation for what?
Kenyeta: for. For some, charges that he got when he was a minor. and he's just.
Dr. Laura: What did he do to get the charges? No point in hiding. Come on, tell me what happened.
Kenyeta: he was accused of, He was accused of. Of robbery. After. He was, After he was in a. In a really bad car accident and sustained, a traumatic brain injury because of the car accident. And like a few hours later he was arrested. So that's like the.
Dr. Laura: And when was the robbery? When he got convicted of this. So when was the robbery? Obviously before, the accident, right?
Kenyeta: No, this was, this was after the accident, this was afterwards.
Dr. Laura: So he had the accident. He had a traumatic brain injury. And how many minutes after the accident did he rob somebody? I don't understand.
Kenyeta: This was maybe. I want to say it was maybe like a few hours after that.
Dr. Laura: So he had a car crash and robbed somebody immediately.
Kenyeta: Someone?
Dr. Laura: How does that work?
Kenyeta: yeah, a tractor trailer wound up hitting him and. Yeah, that's. That's how.
Dr. Laura: And he got out of the car and robbed somebody. How did he do that?
Kenyeta: This was hours. Yeah. Ah, a few hours later. It's a, It's a long story. It was another.
Dr. Laura: Oh, I'm dying to hear it. He got out of the mangled car and. And went where? And did what?
Kenyeta: Another, Another kid came and picked him up. A girl came and picked him up. That. It's. It's a, it's an awful story, but the, Oh, goodness, let me breathe for a second.
Dr. Laura: So, so a girl picked him up and took him. Where? And where did they do the robbery?
Kenyeta: The girl took him to my mother's sister. The girl took him to my mother's sister. And my mother's sister had been harboring my son for days before all of this occurred. And she knew that I was, you know, looking for him. My husband and I were looking for him. And, despite that, she kept it a secret that he was at her house. so that's how this, that's how this occurred.
Dr. Laura: When did the robbery occur? Who did he rob? You left that part out. Who did he rob?
Kenyeta: some. Some random person. Some random person. I have no idea who the person is, but just a random person. But it's a very long string of, of details and it's always tied. Like, not always, but like, and you said armed robbery.
Dr. Laura: So did he have a knife or a gun?
Kenyeta: they said that he had a, A gun. So they said. Yeah. okay. Right. That's what.
Dr. Laura: So he was convicted of armed robbery. And you said he has traumatic brain injury. So can he walk and talk and feed himself and stuff like that?
Kenyeta: Yes, yes.
Dr. Laura: Not too traumatic. All right, so how can I help you today?
Kenyeta: so my question is, like, how do I, How do I continue to help him stay stable and compliant and away from
Dr. Laura: Can't. That's up to him. That's up to him. Folks. When you turn on the news these days, how do you feel about your retirement?
Dr. Laura: Unsure.
Dr. Laura: unsteady. Worried. Experts say gold could reach $6,300 an ounce. And smart money is already moving. Here's the problem. Most gold companies treat women like an easy mark. That's why I recommend Golden Crest Medals. Founder Rich Jacoby was tired of watching honest Americans get ripped off. And when you place an order, he personally calls you to make sure everything went smoothly. Golden Crest is the only precious metals company recommended by Bloomberg, and they earned an A rating from the Better Business Bureau. So right now, my listeners, that's you get a free portfolio review to see if gold and silver belongs in your retirement. You may even qualify for up to $25,000 in free silver and up to 10 years of free IRA storage. Make smart decisions with your retirement. Call 888-817-7172 or go to goldencrestmetals.com / DrLaura and be sure to tell them I sent you. Okay, good. And he's going to go to your mother, sister, because if they kiss his ass and take care of him and you're still in denial that your son is off the rails in his behavior, there's nothing you can do. He's found a place where he is safe from you. Hopefully holding him accountable. Nothing. I hate telling people that. Really? I'd much rather tell you. Here are the three things you could do that'll switch your boy around and the aunt will not interfere and he'll become irresponsible. Yeah, I can't do that. It's going to come from him. And if he does anything to breach, the rules, he'll be back in jail.
Kenyeta: M.
Dr. Laura: I hope you have other kids.
Kenyeta: I. I do have another child as well.
Dr. Laura: And how is that other child doing in life?
Kenyeta: She is having a rough go of it because she's very close to her brother.
Dr. Laura: Meaning what? Is she in school? Does she have good Friends.
Kenyeta: Yes, she is. She's, she's in school. she's in school. online though. Not, in person school, but she's in school.
Dr. Laura: And how old is she?
Kenyeta: she's 10. So they're not, they're a big distance apart as far as age.
Dr. Laura: Does she think he's innocent?
Kenyeta: I don't think she even grasped all,
Dr. Laura: of like, she's 10 years old. We girls are not stupid at 10, we understand certain things. She knows her brother was in jail. Does she think like you do, that he's incident, innocent?
Kenyeta: I won't say that she said any of that. She's more fearful of the situation with my mom's sister more than anything.
Dr. Laura: Fearful of what happening, fearful of what
Kenyeta: she fears because she, she's noticed the patterns that have occurred. Every time my, my mom's sister comes into the picture, of, you know, all the chaos and the, you know, the things that it's caused to happen, so that causes her to get really upset and she's like, oh, mommy, do something, do something to her. Keep her away from, keep her away from him.
Dr. Laura: You need to tell your daughter the truth. Your son, your brother, does bad things. He got caught and went to prison. And it's interesting that we have a family member helping him in the wrong way. Got to tell her the truth. But he's responsible for his bad behavior, and she is not responsible for his bad behavior. She just gives him a place to hide. This is your brother's fault. You need to make it really clear to your daughter at 10. Yes. That this is all about her brother and not about that woman who she's holding accountable for his bad behavior. She's not.
Kenyeta: I connected to my mom's sister because this dynamic has gone since I was a child. Like this is the same person that I.
Dr. Laura: Okay. All that notwithstanding, your daughter doesn't need to have all this fear and anxiety. And your moral obligation is to her well being. Now, because your son is making his own choices in life and they're not good ones and he has somebody who helps him do that. Whatever else the history is, your immediate moral obligation is to your daughter, not your own history, not your mother's sister and not your son, you have to help her understand that they're all doing the wrong thing and nobody is making him do anything bad. That way her anxiety will diminish. I urge you, please, to do that. My number. 1-800-375-2872. Perhaps you need to make some decisions today or soon. Let's talk about it before you do it.
