Why is this strange object with winding channels one of Nikola Tesla's most ingenious inventions?
Most valves use springs, balls, or flaps to let flow pass in only one direction, but all these mechanisms have a weak point. They wear out, jam, and break, especially under vibration and high pressure.
And then Tesla found a brilliant move. He made the flow block itself. That's how the Tesla valve was born, a channel full of asymmetric branches, like a labyrinth designed by pure mathematics.
When flow moves the right way, it passes almost in a straight line, like an open highway with no traffic. But the moment it tries to reverse, it's forced into the turns, colliding with parts of its own flow, creating vortices and turbulence. The flow rapidly loses energy and nearly stops.
All this without a single moving part that could wear out or break.
