But before we dive into that, we are going to turn our attention to Dallas where the Mavericks fired general manager Nico Harrison on Tuesday.
Now, Harrison had been under intense scrutiny since he shockingly traded Luca Donuch to the Lakers in February, less than a year after the superstar led the Mavs to an NBA Finals appearance.
Now, as Blake alluded to, Dirk, you are a Mavs legend. I know that your phone has been blowing up. Why did this move have to happen?
Well, I think there's just too many distractions, uh, too much going on to keep going this way. Um, this probably, this move should have probably happened this summer, honestly. Uh, I didn't want this negative energy and this black cloud over, uh, the Cooper Flag era, but, uh, here we are now.
I just knew I figured this this fan base is a passionate and loyal fan base. I I was lucky enough to to, you know, experience it for for 21 years and I knew they weren't just get over it as as people say or forget about it. Uh they're they're extremely uh passionate and uh this trade just made no sense. It made no sense to to them and really there was no explanation uh for it either.
You know, you you go to the the finals the year before. um you gave up all these assets to to build really the team around Luca with with some 6ix9ine wings that all you know can switch in guard form. Uh you had two lob threats with with Gaffford and uh and Lively and the team was built around them. You added Clay which the shooting was a little bit of issue in the finals against Boston. So you did all this um they started the season the following season well uh going into Christmas game day game. Uh they were you know 14 and three out of the last 17 games. So, they're just starting to hit hit their stride and then Luca gets hurt and unfortunately that's uh that's the last game he's ever played in the Mavs uniform.
So, uh it was it was very sad. Uh it was very sad how that uh how that ended. And it feels like the the fans feel like they got robbed of actually seeing the end, seeing this through, seeing Luca develop uh you know into hopefully a champion one day and it feels like they they never got to see the end to this. So this was uh uh yeah very uh very heartbreaking and uh but now it's you know I think it's time to move on. It's time to move on now. Um focus on on this on this team on on this franchise. Um you know this definitely set the franchise back. Uh but you know now it's it's about building it back up and uh and obviously this team is is struggling a bit. It it needs to support all they uh all they can get. So, um, you know, hopefully, uh, we can have a good year here from now on and, uh, and and cheer the cheer the team up.
>> Absolutely. Well, Nico Harrison was the GM of the Maz for just over four seasons, and now we we usher in something
