AI is taking over video games

Eve Online is one of the oldest online games where real players can wage war that takes months in real time to complete and potentially cost hundreds of thousands of real-world dollars in destruction. That's exactly what Google is interested in.

How players behave and act in these high-stakes scenarios, which is perfect simulation data to help train artificial intelligence. Eve Online currently has 250,000 monthly active users running a fully player-driven economy, complete with wars, political alliances, market manipulation, and long-term scams that play out over months and years.

And that is exactly what AI can't do yet. And now that I'm saying this out loud, maybe it's actually not a good thing. AI is still not great at long-term planning and tasks. So, they're building a simulation environment out of this video game. And if Google's AI can learn to win in a game like Eve Online with real players, they've solved something that most AI companies won't be able.
