On today's show, Trump's a liar again. What is America's real plan in Iran? The UN is a joke. and some insight into why the girls school massacre happened which involves Pete Hegathth.
It's day 18 of America's illegal war in Iran and a source close to the White House is telling media Iran holds the cards now. They decide how long we're involved and they decide if we put boots on the ground. And it doesn't seem to me that there's a way around that if we want to save face. So, American lives may be lost for Trump to save face. Wow.
One of Trump's top counterterrorism officials has resigned because of the Iran war. Joe Kent said, "I cannot in good conscience support the ongoing war in Iran. Iran posed no imminent threat to our nation. And it is clear that we started this war due to pressure from Israel and its powerful American lobby." Which is what I've been saying the whole time.
This week, Trumpy said in a public forum, "I've spoken to a certain president who I like actually, a past president, former president. He said, 'I wish I did it. I wish I did, but they didn't do it. I'm doing it.'" Yeah. >> "Which president?" "I can't I can't tell you that." >> "I don't want to embarrass him. It would be very bad for his career even though he's got no career." >> "What?"
Trump recently talked to a former president who told him that he wished that he had attacked Iran. Really, Trumpy? Which one? Because I would highly doubt that any of the former presidents, D or R, are jumping on the phone with him to talk about anything, much less Iran. And you know what? This is so easily known because there is a noble number of presidents who are still alive. Reporters called the reps for all the living presidents and all of them said, "God, no. We have not talked to Trump." So, he lied. He was caught in a bald-faced lie. He loves to say things and be like, "So, that person said blah blah blah." And I'm always like, "Don't speak for them. Don't put words in other people's mouths. Speak for yourself. Don't lie on someone else's good name."
That reminds me that when Trumpy realized he could not open the straight of Hormuz by himself, that even that is beyond the capability of the US military, even though they supposedly destroyed Iran's military already. So Trumpy called the world to help him. And don't you know it, the entire world said, "No, we're good." It gives me joy to see them say no to him. I wish it was because they don't like him, but I think it's more about this specific conflict and how dangerous it is militarily and politically. They know Trump has done something incredibly stupid and they're not following him. Trump has wandered into a very serious conflict with a deadly foe and he does not know what he has started. Iran's position now is we will attack you until you agree to never attack us again. America's position is we don't know what to do.
Senator Chris Murphy has once again explained the game on Twitter. I want to give you Senator Murphy's tweets because he's talking about what America is actually doing and not doing in this conflict. We could quote Trump like mainstream news does, but it's just pointless bluster. Trump says we won, but we clearly haven't. So what are we talking about? Senator Murphy is explaining what's really going on. He said Trump believed Iran would not close the straight of Hormuz. He was wrong. And now oil prices are spiking. If the strait stays closed, a global recession will result. It actually may already be too late. Gas prices are the first to spike, but food prices are next.
What about naval escorts for tankers? This is a possibility, but it's harder than you think. First, it would require our entire navy. 100 tankers need escorting every day. Second, if we can't destroy the mines and drones, our ships are at risk, too. So, being the biggest and strongest doesn't answer every question the battlefield asks of you. Interesting. We can destroy Iran's missiles, but not all their drones. And war today is drone war. Iran can hit oil sites in the region indefinitely because they possess so many cheap weaponized drones. Guess we shouldn't have gone to war with them in the first place. If Trump paid any attention to the Ukraine war, he would have noticed how warfare has changed. But he didn't, and he blundered. Worse, the Gulf states are running out of interceptors to stop Iranian missiles and drones, meaning that soon more oil sites will be vulnerable.
We are hearing that there is some back channel conversating, yes, that's a word, between Iranian and American officials. Someone said, "The US has scoffed at the notion of paying reparations to Iran for the damage that they have caused in this illegal war, but Trump may be open to allowing Iran to sell their oil on the world market." That would be a massive change. Iran has been banned from selling their oil to most of the world for well over a decade. That would transform the Iranian economy almost immediately.
You know, a lot of us who are Palestinian are, you know, basically pleased that there is a regime in the Middle East um that is a counterbalance to is what would otherwise be Israeli pedrimony. And from our perspective, the only country that has ever been aggressive, that attacks its neighbors, that commits things like genocide is Israel. It's not Iran. I can't imagine what it's actually like to feel like Israel and the West is more threatening to your existence than Iran is. But that's the lived reality of most people in the Middle East. The war is being carried out against Iran not because Israel or the US cares about the is Iranian people and what they face from their own regime. It's being carried out to complete a job which started with Iraq which is to dismantle every single anti-western regime in the region.
Moving on, Trump's recent media strategy has been to talk to journalists one- on-one on the phone. Suddenly, you see all these mainstream interviews with the president where a reporter talks to the president for a few minutes and then the reporter tells us exactly what the president said. For example, here's Dana Bash. >> "I just got off the phone with President Trump who gave himself a 15 out of 10 on how the war is going so far. Number one, he said, quote, 'Iran is not the same country it was a week ago. A week ago, they were powerful and now they've been indeed neutered.' What about the rise in gas prices?" He said, "That's all right. It'll be a short-term time. It'll go way down very quickly." Um, I asked if that is going to depend on what's happening in the Straight of Hormuse. He insisted that's already figured out. We've knocked their navy."
Guys, this is not reporting. That's stenography. Are you reporting a story or taking dictation from a president who lies all the time? Notice how there's no context, just recitation of his words. There's no pointing out what's fantasy, just a faithful reciting of what he said. His comments must be accompanied by context and fact-checking or you're just manufacturing consent. You're just doing stenography. We need context.
Moving on. You want to know how feckless the United Nations really is? The UN Security Council passed a resolution condemning Iran's retaliatory strikes. It condemns in the strongest terms the egregious attacks by Iran on the other Gulf states, calling these attacks a breach of international law. Okay. But the text does not condemn the original illegal strikes by Israel and America. The UN as a whole has never condemned Israel and America's illegal attack. So Iran's response is illegal and unacceptable. But the original attack is what? Because America did it and if they tried to condemn America's actions, America would just veto the resolution. So at the UN, we can do no wrong even when we do wrong. Except that the UN Secretary General Antonio Gutderz publicly condemned the US-Israeli strikes as violations of international law and the UN charter because there's no case for self-defense here. So, the head of the UN knows it's an illegal attack, but the politics and the bureaucracy of the UN body prevent the group from getting to the truth. Wow. That's why the UN ain't Moving on.
The Minab school massacre, the girl school massacre remains one of the enduring stories of this illegal war. Mainstream media is not talking about it very much, but it should be a gigantic story. America committed a war crime. We know that American missiles landed on that school. We also know that it was a double tap. Some in Iran, including the mayor of Manab, has said it was a triple tap. A double tap is two separate strikes like a missile, a pause to let people run to help those who are injured or dead and then another missile to the same spot to get the helpers to make people afraid to go to the site of a bombing. Israel does it all the time. Triple Tap is doing that three times. America killed 175 people in that bombing, most of them young girls. And it's hard for mainstream media to talk about America committing a war atrocity. But that is what happened. It doesn't matter what fact-free thing Trump said in response. We don't have to follow every dispatch from reality with and here's the crazy thing Trump said in response. That is not helping us understand. Some have said that the attack was a mistake. But we have expensive precision weapons and the most technologically advanced military in the world and the best trained soldiers. A mistake is not enough. And I don't think it is. I think it's the impact of Pete Hegth on the military. This man is all about changing the rules of engagement, urging soldiers to move fast and be aggressive and to throw off the shackles of caution. What? Encouraging a warrior ethos is fine, but the military has war guidelines for a reason. When we blow up a school, that destroys our relationship with the people of that country. Did Hexth order the school to be bombed? Surely not. But he created a culture where soldiers were encouraged to do anything and fired people who helped make sure that we didn't kill civilians in war. We committed a war crime here, a war atrocity. And there's blood on Hexath's hands, just like there's blood on Trump's little hands and Netanyahu six-fingered hands, too.
One last thing I wanted you to see because I don't think media should amplify Trump's statements when he lies, but media should definitely repeat his comments when he tells the truth. At a recent forum, Trumpy admitted that we went to war because Israel wanted it. >> "We did it because we have some good allies there. We have some great Middle Eastern countries there. Israel there." >> He says the quiet part out loud like a little kid.
