foreign. [Music] [Music] 's boyfriend and we got each boyfriend. So, just to bring our listeners up to speed, why don't you all give a little bit of an intro about yourselves? What do you do for work, briefly, and where are you from? So, we can start with you. What? Oh, okay. Hey everyone, my name is Philip. Um, I'm Helen's husband, and I make videos online and I sell Boba. Hi everyone, I'm Ray. I am Mel's boyfriend. For work, I'm a producer for Morning Brew's media company. Where are you from? I'm from, I'm from the Bay Area. Oh, wait, I'm from the Bay Area. Bay Area. And I'm Eugene. I'm originally from Chicago, and I'm a software engineer.
All right, so we're gonna kick things off with a little icebreaker. Um, it's gonna be a game of him or her. Alexander, rules or read out a prompt, and each couple points at a person who best relates to the prompt. Okay, so all point at the same time. All right, the first one is, who made the first move? On the count of three, one, two, three. Okay, let's go down and say, good. Oh, we got, we got all our stories. Yeah, Phillip, it was in two. We met in 2008, and actually, if you go back on our Facebook wall, it's a very public interaction between us. You can actually see how much you tried. That was more just like, that was more just like the friendship seed. But then when she did move to LA, I was the first one to also say, hey, you just moved into town, like, we should hang out. I think Phil is waiting in the wings. That's always my theory. Yeah, he played the long game. No, but for us, there's no maniacal, like, you know, strategy or, yeah, life happened the way it happened. Yeah, now you have a baby. We help it for you too. I DM'd him. Oh, yeah, you did. But we're supposed to meet at an event, and he's supposed to say hi to me, and he never did. And I didn't. And then I was like, okay, I don't want to wait months. Why didn't you say hi to her? Yeah, say hi to me. Oh, I love how we can like get deep because every time we're able to ask you, yeah, see, yeah, for the first time, we can defend ourselves. Yeah, all the things that they say about us. I, so we have a mutual friend, and I was in LA, we were going to the same event, Play by Play. Yeah, and my, our mutual friend told me about her and said, she's gonna Mel for maybe he's gonna be there, you should say hi. I saw you. I saw all you guys, actually. Yeah, truth be told, I was a little nervous. It's intimidating. Yeah, I mean, you had all your friends, and you guys were drinking, having a good time. I didn't want to like go up to you and pull you away and be like, hi, I'm Ray, come with me. If you do it like that, but definitely I thought about it. It was one of those, like, should I? And it ended up not going to. But then, and then after the event, I, I told our friend, and I was like, maybe next time I'm in LA, we could set up something a little bit more intimate where I could. It would have been too late. He was in the Bay Area at the time, and then when you DM me, and then it's, that's when things went from there. Yeah, go Mel. Yeah, it's a good initiative. I made a move. Yeah, you also made the first move. I also made the first move. Wow. We met on, come on guys. Uh, we met on Hinge. I think you had just reactivated, and I was your first connection. Oh, really? Um, yeah, it's very common on dating apps. You'll like go through cycles when you like download and you get angry and then you like cycle itself. Yeah, and then so he had just redownloaded the app, and then I commented on one of his like little lines on Hinge, which was, what is it? Really the dad? It's super nerdy. How many tentacles does it take to make an octopus laugh? Ten. Two tentacles. [Applause] When you say this nerdy, or is that cringy nerdy? Because of biology. He's a big dad joke person. So I, I message based on that, and then the combo. But he was the first to ask for the date. That's good. Did you miss it? Did you miss it back? I don't get it. No, I, what did I? I was like, oh, do you like dad jokes? And you're like, not really. Okay, good start. Good start.
Okay, the next one is, who farts more? Ready? On the count of three, one, two, three. What? Oh, oh, wait. Oh, wow. I think it's like pretty even. Go right now. You're not afraid of farting in front of Eugene? No, that. Oh, that felt broke. Like, that's super. When was the first time? Yeah, when was the first time you were both okay with it? That was a big deal. Last time. Was it intentional? Was it accidental? The first time was. Do you remember? Mine was accidental. Yeah, she eats a lot of vegetables. That's pretty funny. Um, wait, who smells the worst? I don't know where we're, why we're diving deeper into it. That's a weird thing. I think mine more often. His? Yeah, I feel like the, oh, yeah, actually. One, how did it happen? You said accidentally. Well, he farts more though. I fart more. Way more. Yeah, yeah. Hers are like noticeable and memorable. We're not talking about that. Yes, we are. We're talking about farts because, oh, I got hit with it. It was like a wall. I was just like, Mel, what the heck? Yeah, so I, yeah, I, I make it known. Yeah, but it's like silent and deadly. It's very silent. Most of the time. It's silent most of the time. It's okay. But there's been a couple of times where I'm like, whoa. Okay, moving on. Um, I don't remember our first time. I, I do feel like it was probably, um, something that we've prepared each other for. Like, are we doing this? Are we really gonna do? I don't know. I don't think. [Laughter] All right, it's cool. All right. But you fart more. I'm surprised. Uh, yeah, she can do like on command sometimes. Like, she'll like, she's making a joke and then she'll put, she'll do it like as a period to her joke or exclamation mark. That's a challenge. Wow. Sometimes she'll do like, like a move with it. Accentuate. [Music] All the way down. Oh my goodness. This is weird to have other people talk about my life instead of just me. Okay, yo, you asked us to come on. It's like Mario. Yeah. All right. If you do have more.
The next one is, who's always right? Um, pretty strong. One, two, three. I was gonna. Oh, oh, okay. I saw it. That was like a little bit of like rock, paper, scissors. I saw your hand move towards you. My phone. But you wouldn't have choked me if you didn't see that. Is what you're saying? I think if I saw you come my way, I would have been, it would have been a mutual thing. Oh, yeah, she's right. But you chose yourself. I am usually more right. You just have more of that male confidence that, yeah, you, you portray that you're right, and then we usually look it up, and I'm usually right. So you guys are usually right about facts? No. So actually, yeah, what is it? Okay, yeah, that makes a difference. Like a, like a thing that we're not sure about. Like, like you're talking about the trivia or like, yeah, trivia or what about like directions? Okay, for sure. Him. So that's the thing. That's why, yeah, that's what I was going to point at you. You were informed me because it depends on some things. I think you are more, more right. It's not black and white. A lot of things. I'll start. What? No, this girl has terrible directions. She relies on. I agree. I agree. But I'm usually more right. Okay, I think I'm more. I don't know. I don't know. Like me. Why do you think? What did you say? Email. So I think because he's still in boyfriend mode. The right answer was her. Yeah, yeah. So I, I think in terms of our relationship, in terms of like the development of it, and like when we have very serious conversations or gorgeous personal stuff, you're often right because, wow, there's a compromise. But you know, navigational things are just random factual things. Sometimes I'm, you're right. I don't, I don't know. That is, that's very sweet. Sometimes I would say, celebrity sightings is where you're often wrong. They random things. Yo, I think that's Jennifer Lawrence. And I was like, I don't think so. I don't think that was Jennifer Lawrence. I'm like, I don't think that was wrong. It's okay. Anyways, Eugene, both. I think it also depends. Yeah, yeah, it depends. I've watched a lot of documentaries, right? So I just like know a lot of random noise. That voice just sounds like you're right. But I will today. But with directions, I'm pretty bad at directions. But when we were in Japan, I was right all the times. I was right like 40% of the time. I was right a couple of times. Also because we realize we tell directions differently. Like I follow the GPS pointer thing. So it's like, should we go this way? This way? I'm like, well, let me follow like it's a compass. And he's like, well, from what I know of the streets, this street. And then so we often. So sometimes he was right, sometimes. Ah, there's something to be said there where the rightness, it can be weighted, right? Cool. Are you right about celebrity sightings? Good job. Are you right about our tax forms? Okay, that's true. I would rather take the being right on directions and like, you know, lifestyle, tactical things. You can have tax. Very practical. Tax is not a good example. All right, so I thought we had a debate on who's right, and that could, you know, go on for. It could go on. Yeah.
Okay, the last one for this segment is, who's better at planning? Like, they think of the travel time, what, what you need to bring, potential traffic, costs, just planning in general. This one's hard. Okay, one, two, three. I think lately, with it, with what we've been doing, I've been planning more. Yes. Yeah. So I've been, that's why I'm like, okay, I think I've been planning more of the things. But I think you're more detail-oriented than I am. Yeah, you're more logistical, logical. I, I, I'm pretty good at, uh, adjusting for travel time and timing. Pretty, pretty good. Yeah. Also, Mel, I feel like for you, your traveling stuff, like the bar is very low to be better. What? [Laughter] You take the initiative. You're more detailed. Yeah, yeah. I would say both of us are pretty good at planning, just like in general. So I think that's why it works. So yeah, so we had to, we have many more evidence. Okay, but yes, better at the law, the law term. Like, if we're going on a trip, I'm the one that's going to plan most of it because you're more of a spontaneous person. You like to go with the flow. You like to have things planned for you. This girl talking for me. I'm sitting right here. This is why the podcast is so problematic because she speaks for me. Yeah, and then you listen to all of it and you love it. Um, well, we just said planning in general. Yeah, and okay, so I will say, I think when it comes to like, for example, if it's a short-term, like trip, and we're going to a beach that requires more planning, someone who's gonna get the tent and the picnic and all that set up, that's for sure me. For random spontaneous weekends, Philip is a much better planner. And he has a better sense of maps, directions, timing, schedule. He has like, still talking for a minute. Photography, like he'll look at a map and be like, this is a good hiking spot. It's not. So he does a really good job of planning for short-term weekend trips. I'm giving you a positive right now. Oh, thank you. Would you like to respond? No, it's fine. A lot of times, like for big trips, like traveling trips, yes. Um, it's more so like, I don't want to have too many cooks in the kitchen. And sure, sometimes like my, my bandwidth is low, so I'd rather her go, and she does it well. So sometimes I'll have like, like as we're going through it, I'll have like, oh, like why don't we do this? And say, like, I'll, I'll give notes, like, like on execution. But in terms of like overall planning, sure. But on like day-to-day weekend stuff, we're like, just like doing things like around the city, like she'll literally like on Friday say, I want to do something this weekend. And she won't sit. And then I'll say, well, what do you want to do? Maybe like go somewhere. And then I have to say, all right, let's just get in the car. And I just start driving. And she doesn't even know where we're going. And then she'll get to the place where be like, oh, this is nice. I do all of that. This is actually very accurate. There's no, I don't defend myself there at all. That's a compliment. Long-term planning and then like, yeah, spontaneous planning. Yeah, and I really appreciate and love you for that because that's something I really value. Family time. And it takes to take someone who's like very good at spontaneous planning. Do you, do you like spontaneous spontaneity like that? Or is it spontaneous? Well, for you, it is because you just arrive there. For me, it's like, all murder. Should we go? Yeah, it depends on. I think you'd like to, again, an idea of what we're gonna do. Completely surprised. But I also feel like if I had to be very particular and make sure you would have a good time, I would be very conscious of what I'm planning so that way you're not, especially with food. She likes to make sure we're eating good food. Anyways, you too. I would say I'm a bit more of a bit better, but it's because you're, I think you're just like overly optimistic. And you're like, [Applause] and so it's like, as soon as like one thing goes wrong, it's like, okay, now I'm gonna be like, half an hour late. Or like, that's true. I'm really bad with timing, like time estimates. So yes, the melee thing. I'm also late a lot. Yeah. Um, I do think, I mean, for the Japan trip, he did a lot of the planning. So I think more like trip, like long term. You love to research. When we were there, you knew random facts about things and stuff. So and I'm very like, I'll go and then it's like, we have like, kind of three things and I'll kind of like figure it out while I'm there. So you're better with that. But I initiate like, like certain things like the, uh, New Year's. Oh, yeah, like Joshua Tree. And then like, I booked it. Definitely. So it kind of, but generally, I would say more him. But once in a while, I'll like contribute. Nice. We've got a couple more him or hers.
The next one is, who is most likely to say "I'm sorry" first? Ready? One, two, three. [Music] Okay, look at all the different couples. Yeah, look at all the different couples. Oh, it's all different. Wow. Let's start listening. Let's start over there. We'll unpack this one. I want to hear your explanation. Actually, I feel like you're way better about if like something feels uncomfortable or we have an interaction which feels like you leave you feeling uncomfortable or like unpleasant. You're way better about like bringing, like making us talk about it. Yeah, I think I'm learning from you, actually. It's actually really good. And so like, oh, the Yamazaki day, right? In Japan, I was like, oh, I, I totally [ __ ] up. I didn't, I shouldn't have like made a big deal about something that wasn't. And like trying to be better like that. Do tell. Putting stuff in bags in the storage lot, the coin lockers. Oh, yeah, yeah. We got into a little bit of a. It was a very, you know, when you travel with your person, it's very, oh my God. And there was, it was like a long day, lots of luggage. We were trying to figure out where to store things. And there was a little bit of, I don't even remember what it was about. I think I like, I wanted to rearrange something a little bit differently so we could use two lockers instead of three. But it cost like three dollars to rent the locker. Right. I'm like, yo, I just want to go. We've been like trying to get to the stupid distillery for the last like hour and a half and we haven't made it for like literally where we started. Yeah, what do we prioritize? What are we prioritizing here? Yeah, but then I guess, yeah, so then I'll like make sure we talk about it and make sure that we come to somewhere to the conclusion. Yeah, like relatively quickly. Or yeah, I give him time because I realize that I'm the kind of person that generally does like to resolve something on the spot. But like, I can't. I think sometimes you need some time to cool down. Um, and then so I kind of just give you, give you a little space. And then when you're ready to talk about it, then we talk about. But usually, I will, I'll lead it a little bit. Yeah. Okay, you guys. You guys. I said you. I said, wait. I think you have a, have a saying sorry. Just like, oh, I do. I do. I do. Yeah, I do. I was going off. But technically, okay, I'm sorry. Because sometimes you're like, sorry. I never. A lot. And even though you don't need to, I'm like, you don't have to say sorry. Oh, so, so okay. Then we were talking about like the stories that matter. I definitely admit to it and, uh, take accountability. But unlike Eugene, I need time to like, yeah. So you, so you do agree. You say sorry more than I do? Or do you think I say frequently? No, I meant like, when he said, when it matters in the arguments, the big arguments, who says sorry first? Part of me. Are you? Yeah. Oh, would you agree? Yeah. It depends on. Sometimes I like, yeah. Right. Okay. Really? No, I'm just kidding. We're gonna package some things later. Okay, so you both pointed out. So we both closed our eyes and pointed at ourselves. I like how you both did this too. Well, actually, I will say that I think we're both very, um, strong-minded, strong-willed when we're opinionated about something. Okay. So when we feel strongly about something, we're not ones to just say sorry like off the cuff, just to, to allow for like positive energy between us. I think we're the type of people that will really want to talk it through so that the other person like really understands at the core of us like what is the source of all of this. And we also want to understand from each other too. So we can talk for a while. Something it has an argument. I think there are times also when we both don't say sorry. Like we are two different people, right? Yeah. Oh, actually, there's been there's been a. I think maybe this, this has been more in our married, like, um, mother-daughter. Sorry, who's the mother? Like husband and wife and parents. Like, there's been a couple times where I think like a few years ago, it would have been an argument. But because we just have so much to do, we just kind of plow through it. And then, and then by the time, like it's, by then, it's like hours later, and it's not even worth talking. Right. Like those are like small things sometimes. Yeah, that have definitely like, like even just the other day, like I think I've maybe gave you some attitude in the way I was talking about dinner or something. And while I was feeding him and blah, blah, and we just kind of just kept going because we're like, we gotta get this kid to bed. Yeah. I think it's like, it's one of those things where, yeah, in the past, I think I would have been very much like, that is an argument we have to fix before we move forward. But now it's kind of like, okay, well, we're two different people with two different perspectives. And we are this thing, we probably just won't agree on. So we agree to disagree and just kind of like move on with life. It was a small thing. It was a small thing. Yeah. And if it comes up again, I think then we, like, it's a little bit of a softer blow each time. And then we learn to like compromise and work with each other until it doesn't become a thing. Yeah. So that's, that's one thing. And I think if it, it's a scenario where we know we're wrong, we're both not prideful to the point where we just don't want to say sorry. We very easily, like, you'll be like, sorry. Okay, I see that. That was my fault. It takes, it takes a little bit of time sometimes. Like, yeah, I definitely, I, it is a, it's a PR, like, it's an exercise on pride, right? Yeah, for anyone, right? So you just have to be like, I wanna, I want to make them feel bad. But like, is it worth it? It's probably pretty equal. I think we both point at ourselves because I think what we should have done is point at each other because we both. It actually is pretty equal. Like on the big ones where I'll go to you like after like 30 minutes or an hour and be like, hey, sorry, like, let's figure this out. Or you've come, you come to me too. Yeah, it's pretty equal. Okay, okay.
Next question, who is more likely to want to stay in versus go out? Ready? Which one? Stay in. Stay in. Okay. Yeah. One, two, three. Yeah, yeah. Oh, oh, Janet. Party animals. Should we start? Or you go? Before we start. Okay. Uh, you wanna start? Like, I'm a homebody. That's not true. You're a raving boy. This guy, this guy. That's crazy. That's like my, my old life. I've like hung up my wreath. You know, your totem is hung up. Oh, yeah. We're supposed to go to a rave. Right. Right. Man, lead the way. But generally speaking, I mean, I'm very happy just being at home. Like, I like cooking. So, and like, we hang out with the dog, watching documentaries. Yeah. Curiosity, curiosity. This episode brought to you by curiosity. Yeah. You want to go out more? I mean, or it's not more. It's just like, if we're going to be given the option, I will more likely opt to go out. And that's not even just at night. Sometimes during the day, I'm like, hey, let's go out for a walk. Let's just, I kind of want to just, like, get out of the house. I will initiate that a little bit more. He's very, very happy being at home. Gotcha. Yeah. How about you guys? I mean, he chose me, which I feel like makes sense. Yeah. But I feel like it's a very thin margin in terms of like, we're pretty much in sync of, yeah, we want to go out and of course, and stay in. But I think you are more very definitive. Like, I'm not trying to go out. When I'm open to it, if I think sometimes, like, what was the Halloween night where your roommates was like, oh, we're having to have a table at his place. And I was like, sure, I'm down. And then you're like, ah, okay, I'm down. Yeah. Ultimately, I think if you want to go out, it makes me want to go out a little bit more. Like, even the other way. I'm going to inner chrome. I was like, I literally just took off my makeup and washed my face. And he's like, I'm gonna go to dinner. I was like, and Helen's like, I'm going to new girl. I was like, oh, damn it. I think we don't go out a lot. Plus, like, if you're willing to go out, I was like, but generally speaking, we don't go out. We don't go out. I said Philip because I think you are actually maybe like 30% more extroverted than I am. Like you actually, you actually refuel your energy by people and connecting with people. So you do for sure want to go out more than I do. Like with, like small groups. I don't, I don't like that's true. Feed off of like big stuff where like I have to, I can only have like 30-second conversations with people. But I would say during the daytime, you're, it's the opposite split. Oh, yeah. You want to go out during the daytime. Yeah, yeah. For me, like I'm down to like go out at night. Yeah, for a spontaneous weekend trips, right? But I feel like these days, like I don't know what it is, whether it's age or responsibility, but like, I feel like my expectations of me going out are very different from like when I'm actually out. Like when I'm like having a rough week, I'm like, I can't wait for the weekend. I want to get, like, I want to drink. I want to like relax. And then like, I feel like once I actually get out there, I'm like, this is tiring. Or, or like, I can't get drunk. Like, what's why can't I get drunk right now? I don't want to drink this much. And then I'm like, oh, let's just go home. I'm done. [Music]
And the next question is a little spicy. Oh, who initiates sex more? Ready? You gotta think about it. Think about your answer more often. Yeah. Okay. Three, two, one. Um, there's a little bit of logo. First, we are unanimous. Unanimous. Yeah. You answer. I'll just sit here and look at the camera. If the question is more than her, I think because, because my mom, because I honestly, like my day sometimes is so packed and like, I, I'm like a morning person. Tired. And actually super early. And early on, especially you was definitely you. And then you kind of got an understanding of like, my schedule. Yeah. But we've had discussions of like, you know, we're always on your schedule. Tell us more. You're more awake in the morning. I'm like, in bed, like dead asleep. I'm just like, I'm not trying to get it on when, like, 7 AM in the morning. You know, not 7 AM in the morning. 7:30. Yeah. You know, anyways, moving on now. Um, would you, would you point at Phil? Uh, well, what did you point at? I didn't have an answer. Like, even I think it was very much even pre-baby. Yeah. I mean, we had, we had an episode. Is it out yet? Wait, no, not yet. Still the baby tea. But by the time, by the time, yes. So, so in the episode, we actually talk about how, um, we had to like work through like our, um, you know, just our own desires and how we, our own self-confidence, our own scheduling, our own libidos and everything through this time. And it's actually been was off for a little bit. Yeah. I'm sure baby disrupts a lot. Oh, yeah, it does. Ironically, it's because, yeah, there you go. Yeah. I don't know if you want to have a different answer for it. No, I mean, I think I, I agree. I think post-baby, whether it's, yeah, the your body goes through a lot of changes, libido and everything goes through a lot of changes. So I think that's, that's one area where we felt comfortable talking to each other about it. And since then, it's like, kind of like, um, [Music] I think like you guys can all understand, like when you, when you have sex, you want to feel sexy too, right? Yeah. That's right. There's nothing about to the end of the day. Yeah, yeah. So it takes like a lot to like get yourself to feel that way. Yeah, yeah. And also for like months, you're just basically like not supposed to, or, you know, it's like, it's stopped. So the momentum stops. And then all of a sudden, it's like, it's over. Touching and everything too. Oh, yeah. Um, over. Yeah, when you're over-touched, or you're breastfeeding, and it's just like, you don't want anyone touching you. Yeah. So it's, it's a lot. It's a journey. I'm excited for this episode. Very different. Yeah. All experiences. Yeah. How about you? Would you point to over there? [Laughter] I think also to be fair, like, we've been dating what, six, seven, eight months, somewhere around there. But it's been really busy with work stuff. So I, similar, like I just get tired and then I sleep a lot. So that's affected. When I get stressed out, so and sleep. So that's it. Yeah. A little furry friend. That is. Whatever it takes, you know. Curiosity. [Music] Walking into the grocery store and seeing the crazy high price of eggs nowadays has been kind of stressful. So for this next session, we're going to dive a little bit deeper to explore our relationship dynamics with our partners and also within our friend group. So I'm going to put Eugene and Ray in the hot seat right now. Oh boy. And actually ask them, what was it like to meet us for the first time? Okay, it was like terrifying for me. I think it's just, just for a little bit of context, it was in our backyard, mine, Philip's backyard. And it was like a fireside, literally like a fireside campfire chat where small group, you're sort of forced to be there for like three hours and talk to us. Okay, I got like zero notice. It was like, oh yeah, uh, we were, you guys were doing like the book signing thing, I think that day or something. And she's like, oh yeah, you know, some of us are getting together over at Phil and, uh, Helen's place. And she's like, you want to come by? I'm like, uh, all right. My hair was all crazy. And so I was like, trying to cut my hair so I look like somewhat decent. You got your haircut for us. Who cuts it himself? But, but it's an effort to. And then I get there. And then I think it was like the second question that you asked me, what is your favorite thing about Janet? I'm like, I was ill-prepared for this. I also do it because we do a lot of just hangouts in the back. Yeah, you know. And so I was just kind of inviting him into that, I guess. I did not process that it would be very intimate and, and the first time of really getting to sit down with everyone. So, but I mean, everyone did make me, after minus that one like question, it's totally cool because I was actually talking to my friend about this, like, what is my favorite, like, what do I like best about Janet? So it's like, all right, I'm actually ready for this question. Yeah, I'm just talking, yeah, to my friend about this. Was it, was it just Phil and Helen's place? Or was it like, I don't know, like a few other people? Like Dan? Yeah, yeah, the council. It was like Survivor out there. Yeah, at the very end with the teeth. They don't like you. They throw you in the fire. Sure. But we did talk about, I remember we talked about like, what was like high school like? Like, where did you grow up? What did you do growing up? So we did go like way back. In very end. Yeah, actually think it's actually very, it's a nice casual setting because if it's at dinner, you're like talking about activities, it's very not like, you don't really get to know the person. This is like, we're all close and we can hear each other. We have drinks ready and snacks readily available. Yeah, it is intimidating though because you can't leave, you know? Can you use the restroom? Well, if your intentions are not to leave, then you wouldn't leave. I do remember we're actually when, uh, because Amber was actually very spontaneous that Eugene was coming to Helen, Phil's, because it was the day of. You decided, I think, "Mass Eugene to come over today." And we're like, "Oh, [ __ ] it's today. It's happening today." Versus I think with Ray, oh, yeah, it was like a week planned. Like, this is the weekend. It's time to get your haircut. Sorry, it's weird that you guys. Like, for me, I would have thought like, if they can't accept me at my most unshaded. No, but you always want to make a good first impression. Oh, yeah. Wondering what would have been like if both of us were there at the same time. Sorry for the question too. I thought it was a good icebreaker. No, he, he was prepared with it. Yeah, yeah. It was my first time, um, like, it was, it was fine. I wasn't super nervous. I think just naturally nervous of just wanting to be liked and accepted because you never know. Sometimes you're yourself and they're like, just doesn't click. But it was comforting to know that like, you had prepped me and gave me a good kind of idea of everyone, like how chill everyone is. And so when I got there, I felt really normal, kind of similar to my friends at the Bay Area, actually, just the dynamic. It wasn't, it wasn't bad at all. I, I think I was very intentional how I answered things. Helen also asked me the question. Geez, babe, what are you doing? You gotta get to the point, you know. Oh my gosh, yeah. I thought you were funny. Different type of humor. The stuff that you laugh at, I find, uh, adorable and amusing. She didn't say funny. You said adorable and amusing. I'm funny to look at. So does he try to tell me a joke without thinking the joke all the way through and you forget? And at some point, I'm like, just let go. Let it go. Would you recommend this sort of scenario for other people who are introducing their SOs to friends? Like a more intimate group? I prefer it that way. Like what Phil said, it's like, sometimes when you're at an event, there's just like so much noise and there's like a lot going on. This one, you get a chance to like get to know people and talk to them. Yeah, yeah. I mean, I think it worked out really well. Like, yeah, it was like a little nerve-wracking, but when is it not gonna be? It's gonna get. Yeah, if anything, like you guys should approach like, you're interviewing us because like, like we have to be, we're going to be your friends too, you know? Like, I feel like if I was going to this situation, I'm like, I hope your friends are cool because I'd be friends with them. It's kind of a two-way street, right? So it's like, oh, I hope they, yeah, like accept me. And well, I want to, I want to accept them too.
I think this next question is more directed towards, like, I guess your own relationship. Like, for example, I'll go first. Like, when I shared with, like, maybe with Janet and then you two that I was dating Ray, what was your first impression? And when I shared, I thought Ray has a very calm energy about him, which is the opposite. She's a little more excitable and a little more frantic at times. But I feel like that is a personality truth that I actually didn't expect for you. Like, we've always seen you with an archetype of a person who's a, a Christian [ __ ] boy. My dear, I don't like the way that you describe it, right? Yeah. And then, like, I have to remind myself, I have to remind myself that you guys have talked about this stuff on the podcast before because, I mean, like, much more heavily leaning towards the, the bro or the [ __ ] boy. Yeah, yeah. And we knew that that was just like, not Ray. A bro. Look at this guy. This guy's built like a bro. Well, I think that's what works because Ray is someone who has like a, like you're a very peaceful person. And you're also very kind and caring. And that's something that I see you give to Mel. Like, you make her feel valuable and beautiful as you are, right? And I think you really emphasize that for her. And I think that's something that, you know, sometimes maybe you can't, you don't tell yourself, but it tells for you. Yeah, yeah. So when I saw in Ray, I was like, he's, he's a keeper. He's a good one. Wow. I appreciate that. Yeah. I feel like he's definitely grounded in a way from all that works well. Grounded because you are. I think you have a lot of enthusiasm. And I feel like there's like a nice balance. But also, like, L is like a planner. And I think sometimes you can be very particular about certain things. And I feel like Ray has the nice amount of like laid-backness to be able to kind of like, for it for you guys to be able to, you know, find one way together. I agree. Um, I think like Helen said, we also, because of the type that you described in the people that you were kind of like more crushing on and stuff, it's like, oh, you kind of more dated like extroverted, kind of like fuckboy personalities. Ray has the image, right? Like he looks like. But the personality. Yeah, I mean, and we always said, like, no, I wonder what it would be like if you dated someone a little bit more introverted, right? And I felt like, oh, here is our person. What strikes that balance? Um, yeah, and from the Bay Area, I knew that that was like a close relation and like same value of like your heritage and celebrating culture. So I'm like, there's a, there's like a nice connection there. Oh, this is great. Can we stay around this section? I actually, I remember Phil saying to me, he's like, you would date someone from the Bay. That's what he told me. And I was like, oh, I didn't think that was something for a long time that I would date someone from LA. But yeah, yeah. I don't truly remember like when we first like met, yeah, like that night. But I do remember it's like when I first saw him, like, oh, that guy's really good looking. Yeah, big smile, like a lot of teeth, this great, great smile. But I think for me, like when, like, you know, sitting down and whenever, when I met both of them, I was like, as long as they have like, like chill vibes and also like a good sense of humor, like I think that's like the, like the most important. Um, obviously, I'm not dating them, so. But so I'm feeling fun. Yeah, yeah. You like someone who's down. Yeah, yeah. So it's too seriously. Yeah.
How about for you, Jen and Eugene? What was your first impression? Mel, I was really excited for Janet. I was like, oh, yeah, he looks good. Because she showed us photos, like he's shirtless. It's like, yeah, you have. Well, you have one where you're on the business. Hey, if you put it out there, you have to expect it to be shared by itself. I remember being like, oh, yeah, go Jay. You know. And then I think she just was so excited after your first date. And I also loved how I, I think for me, it was like a good sign when you were very upfront in how you felt about the relation with her. Because I think in the past, she's shared, I don't know if it's you, probably, but with everyone else, like how some guys can be a little wishy-washy. And we needed someone who was like mature and like really aware of his feelings. And I was like, this is great. This is so random. I don't know. I always remember this, but when we did Janet's psychic reading, the psychic said, you're going to be someone who's very adventurous and likes to explore and will bring that explore, like that wanting to explore desire out of you. And when Eugene, it's like, oh, yeah, I did. Like, you taught scuba diving in Thailand. You like, do all these things. I was never a teacher, but I, I did dive a lot. Yeah, like it just sounds like you're like into extreme sports. And I was like, oh, [ __ ] like all these students like, oh, sounds like what the psychic says. Sorry, I was a fan for sure. I think same for me. Like, I actually didn't, because like, when's the last time you had a boyfriend, Jay? Like, over a decade? Yeah. So I've never known you in a relationship. So I didn't know what to expect. Yeah. But I think when I met Eugene, I remember the first, one of the first things you said to us, Janet, was, he makes me feel cared for and he makes me feel loved. And I was like, oh, yeah, that's something that I feel like you didn't really get also out of like the past flings that you had. It was always like, okay, let's just support Janet, but we don't know, you know, we're not sure about this one. Nice. Yeah. But I think with Eugene, like, there, there's something here. Also, another thing is, um, I think Jenny will always say, like, because you y'all are pretty similar, you're like, yeah, they're like the same people almost. And in the past, we've always said, is it good for Jen to have someone that is on the same side of the battery? And we were always like, unsure. But I feel like with Eugene, there's something here that works. Like, it's, he's proving, or this relationship is proving to me that I think you need someone who is a little bit more like, similar-paced in life and on the same wavelength with like jokes and dialogue and all of that. And I think Eugene provides that, provides that for you. Also, Eugene's a really good cook. And that's right. You're a girl who loves microwave soup. Right. Valid point. Same thing. I was like, oh, this is a good guy. Like, yeah, I saw the shirtless photo too. I'm like, yeah, yeah. It's like, this guy's in his 40s. What the heck?
Okay, this next question is going to require us to reflect a bit. What is one way that your partner has had a positive impact on your life? You gotta find one thing. So I get like five seconds. Uh, she's made me a better person in general, overall. I'm more patient. I'm more loving. I'm more centered. I feel, I feel more content in life. I think before Helen, I was, I felt like I had to be on this constant search for love and satisfaction because it was like, never attainable. And you just have to, you're just forward destined or doomed to just always be searching for happiness. And I didn't know that you could actually just get to a place of happiness and sustain. So Helen has helped me sustain happiness. That's beautiful. What about you? [Laughter] Um, Philip has helped me to see my potential. I think that's something I didn't expect out of a significant other, boyfriend. Like, I always saw my own path and journey ahead. And I thought to myself, especially back then, like, okay, my goal is to reach the top rung of the corporate ladder. And that's where I'm supposed to be. But then when I met Philip, he challenged that. And sure, you didn't challenge it in the best way. Sometimes you just be like, "What the [ __ ] are you behind a cute girl?" Just like, nothing wrong with being behind you. But I think he just saw that I was like, killing myself at this job. And that was like, yeah, unhappy a lot of times. And he was just like, "What are you doing?" You know? And so he encouraged me to sort of like, step outside of my own, my own boundaries that I had created in my own mind of, you know, these are my limits and this is where I can get to. Um, and so you've always seen my potential. And not just like with me, but also with ABG, you know, when
We first started, like, I don't know if a lot of people know now, but like, Philip was one of the first people that helped to teach us how to edit on Adobe Premiere Pro. And he edited, like, almost our entire first season. Yeah, which is pretty insane. That's like eight hours per episode of editing for free because he saw the potential in us and he was just like, "Y'all gotta pick up some momentum here, just get going." It's not, I, I still have that tab. I'm just waiting to collect it. Your baby, your babies, my invoice is, is dated, right? Less interest. But yeah, I would say the, the fact that you saw so much potential in me is for sure, like, a very positive impact in my, in my life. Oh, so thank you. I don't want to go nuts. All right, next couple. That's it. On, I'll keep mine simple, I guess. I think for me, like, I have the tendency, and you all know this, like, I'm always looking ahead, looking at my calendar, what's next. And I feel that's what feeds into my anxiety sometimes. I think Ray's always like, "All right, let's just be present in the moment." And I feel like I'm able to have fun more, like, when I'm with him. Like, we get to be watching a movie and have a good time. You could be walking to Farmer's or go to Trader Joe's. I just have so much fun. I'm going to Trader Joe's. Yeah. But I don't know, I just feel like I'm learning to be more present in what I'm doing. And I think he's always like, I think because he's also busy, he's like, "I'm stressed too. Let's just be present and let's just focus on now." He always says that to me. He's like, "Don't think about that. It's fine." And so I think I really appreciate that. Oh, that's a great answer. Yeah, that's her. Yeah, she's cool.
[Laughter]
I, I feel like in all the relationships that I've had before, I've never felt more supported than being with this one right here. Um, one quick story is because like I was kind of in between jobs. I was kind of at a pivotal moment in my career. And I remember, uh, we spoke on the phone and I felt really low. And she was like, "I had 100% confidence in me." And wasn't, and this is like early on when we were dating too. So definitely had a moment of feeling like, "Oh man, she's definitely gonna leave me after this." Like, I just didn't feel, I didn't have the confidence. I wasn't sure how you were going to react. But you were so supportive. You're like, "It's okay. Everything's gonna be okay. You're, you know, it's, I'd rather have you be happy in what you do versus just chasing money." And I think from that, I realized like, this is something I want in a partnership, is like a companion, a soundboard, a partner, supporter, and all that stuff. And she's off to that. That was a great, um, like cheerleader. Yeah, of her friends. I also like it when you do get into work mode, you just get into like laser-focused event production mode. Well, I mean, it's fine. I appreciate those things. You get [ __ ] done. Yeah. Thank you.
I will say, so I think I had to share with the ladies that I feel very like loved and supported. But, um, I think something different that I didn't necessarily expect is, um, that I also feel challenged in like a positive way. One of the bigger components, which we've talked about, is having Toby. Um, I think learning to have a dependent in your life, even if it is a pet, because it forces you to have to think about someone outside of yourself. And I am so used to being single for like over a decade, right? Like, even thinking about planning with anyone, I'm so used to just picking up and getting to do whatever I want to do whenever I want. And everything is like, "Well, we have to think about Toby. We have to plan this." And you have, you know, daily responsibilities. So I think that's challenged me in certain ways. And I feel like when it doesn't always go so smoothly, you also, you don't just kind of let it slide. You do push it enough so that it's like, "I need to address it." Hopefully, there's something coming off in like a bad way. Uh, yeah. But I think that that is a good way to like, I feel challenged in a positive way. But you were saying centered? Like, it's actually funny because I actually use the same word. Like when I was like, kind of thinking about this, I was like, "Yeah, you actually make me feel really centered and like balanced." But beyond even that, like, you bring out the best of me. Like, you make me more patient. You make me more kind. Like, I can kind of be an [ __ ] especially like at work stuff, like with work stuff. I'm just like, "Let's get this done. I'm not trying to coddle your feelings or anything like that." Like, right, just like, you know, like we're just here to do work and I'm, that's just kind of how I operate usually. And with you, I'm like, "All right, I gotta be a little bit more sensitive. I have to kind of choose my words a little bit more carefully." Um, just because I don't, I don't want to hurt you. Like, I want to make you feel loved. And I know, yeah, it's not like vows. She's taught you empathy. Yeah. Oh, yeah. Yeah, that's right. Beautiful. Wow. And I like listening in all these. Yeah, I'm just like, "Oh, I didn't know."
Okay, so my question for everyone here is like, what's something you see really love about your partner? It could be funny, it could be serious. So what you secretly love? Secretly love. You do your, like, little happy food dance. Oh, yeah. She's kind of goofy and like quirky and weird, and I just, I don't know, it makes me so happy seeing that. Let's see. Something I secretly like about him. I, I do like that he knows a lot of random stuff. Just like curiosity. Yeah. Like something about this bacteria or like something about this tree. And I'm like, "What?" So you're not annoyed when people like have just random facts? Random facts. I mean, place and time, but yeah. I do. I think because we share, we identify, like, we have, we both share kind of like a curiosity about different things. So, um, yeah, that's something that I really like that's unique about him. I really do enjoy when you laugh at me when I'm doing something silly. I do that, the like the XG dance. I mean, I was trying to imitate this K-pop dance and she was cracking up because I was doing it horribly. But I loved it because the way you laugh is so, like, with your full body. That's true. Yeah.
Bell's also doing a dance. I secretly love that. Even though, like, sometimes you are laughing at me, yeah, it brings me joy that I'm bringing you joy at the expense of my own shame ego. But it's, it's secretly fighting. Unless it's like something I'm really passionate about, like the German Shepherd. But anyways, oh my God, forever. Anyways. But, uh, yeah, that, that is that's something that I really look forward to. Uh, also, I think sometimes when you say a joke and you think it's funny, and I'm like, "It's okay funny." But you laugh at yourself. Oh my God, great joke. I'm like, "Sure it was." Yeah, that happens a lot. I have like, I have three. There are some might be inappropriate. The first one's like sweet. I think I love it because I hate, and I don't hate it, but you wake up really early. And I'm like, "Not a morning bird." But you make it better because you always roll over and give me a cuddle and kiss. And I really like, it's like a nice intimate moment for you to leave for the gym. So I like that. That's actually him trying to initiate, but you know, early. Yeah. I love when you come out of the shower, you look so good. Hey, I'm just, I literally was like, "This is the thing that comes." Like, you look so good and clean. Not, not a great sight for the eyes. Um, I also like, I love when we watch movies together, we laugh at the same scene and we just keep laughing. Like, you know, we're watching a murder mystery. Tube. Yeah. I don't want to ruin this, the movie, but like, there's a student Adam's done. I mean, you just kept cracking up. Yeah. So I think there's moments we just get laughing fits watching movies. And I feel like it's nice. But oh, like, it's kind of like when you said about the XG, like when you're laughing, it makes me laugh. It's just kind of like knowing that you're happy by what we're laughing together. We also do this thing where we're watching movies or TV shows, we go on IMDb and we both look at the actors, the productions. I appreciate that. Yeah. No, he's so cute. What do we, gosh, we've been together for a long time.
Okay, so a random one, a random one that I, we know but no one else knows that I'm gonna say. All theirs. I like, I like when you wear tanks at the gym. I like when I see your nipple, your nipples. I just, I just like when he's wearing a tank at the gym. That is something that I'm always like, "We love going to the gym together." And I was like, "Why you got a t-shirt on? Tank top, you know what I mean?" It is, it is unfair because usually girls at gyms are a little like showing a little bit more skin. Yeah, it makes sense that it should be reciprocated for you. Yeah, your eye candy. Yeah. So I like, I literally want to cut up all his t-shirts, but he's like, "No."
[Laughter]
Um, I already mentioned this. I love that you plan our weekend trips. That is something I just value a lot. Family time. So I really appreciate that about you. Um, I also love that you allow me to put my cold feet on you in the middle of the night because you're warm and I'm so cold. So that's a random one. Um, I also love that you care about the community. That's a good, that's a much bigger one, but yeah, you're very, very passionate about the things that you do. And it's, it's inspiring to be your wife and to, to just see that in proximity. Oh, cool. Okay. Thanks.
I don't know if it's that much of a secret, but I guess like sometimes I think it's silly, but, um, Helen makes these very, um, random but very sweet songs that she sings to our son. Um, and they're not like these like, like, um, like fairy, like, you know, lullabies. Like, like probably what Kina Grannis is singing to, like, she's like singing like, "Oh, I wish I had my voice like Barney on like acid." Like, "We're going here, we're going there." Like, just like random melodies that don't really have like any kind of harmony. They sound great, but they're very memorable. Like, they're like little jingles. And he, it's like totally, like, you know, resonates with them. He like always recognized them. And now, like, even I, like, there, there it's as if like, they're, yeah, they're catching. Exactly. Um, these random like compilations of notes are like catchy. And like, I, I feel like it's gonna like at some point be like a, a soundtrack to this time. I, I don't do that. And and I appreciate that. That she, she makes up those really weird songs. Thank you. Yeah. Release an album. Yeah. Put it on a track. Yeah. Like, "Squirmy baby, squirmy baby, why are you so squirmy?" That sounds like you made it up. Yeah. Like, "No, that's that's like a top three hit right now." That's a top three hit. Very nice. You know, and then sometimes we adjust it to "naked babes." Oh, that's cute. They're good songs. They're good. Thank you. She does the same thing for Toby. Not the same. Not the same. Okay. Similar thing. Really. Will make up random songs that doesn't sound good.
[Applause]
Okay, our last question because we are very fair people. This podcast is very fair. Uh, we, we recorded an episode recently where we shared about fights that we have with our significant others. And you all got the perspective of, of us. It's a very rare moment when you get to come onto a Vlad and have a rebuttal. So guys, you listen to the episode. I hope, or maybe we talked to you about it. But is there any, what is your response? You have the floor if there's anything you want to like rebuttal, share a reaction. And we won't say anything. I feel like Ray's like chopping at the beer. Yeah, literally. You guys can't say. Actually, no, you guys can't say anything. Just like the podcast, we couldn't say. Yeah. And we'll save it. You already got your side out. Well, let me just make sure it was, yeah, it was a German Shepherd. And also chewing loudly. Was there another one? Oh my God. Okay, so I'll start with the, the easy one, the German Shepherd one. I, a concurrence of the day after. I remember thinking to myself, "Why was I so upset about an imaginary dog that we didn't even have?" Some dogs, yes, but I still want a German Shepherd. That doesn't change. But I don't know why I was so upset. But we talked about it and we had the opportunity to kind of air it out. And then the, the morning shower was after that argument. That's why that. So that was in the same like 24 hours. Oh, stacked. Okay. So I remember when you mentioned that you didn't like to be bothered, I was a little upset because of still like last night, the German Shepherd thing. But then as I was cooking, I was like, "Let it go, let it go, let it go, let it go." So that one, I, I get. I do think you had to be so upset. She's trying to [ __ ] keep going. But I get it now. I get now her morning routine is like secret. That's like her time. I kind of knew that. I didn't know the extent of it, how bad it was to be interrupting. Uh, to interrupt that. And then chewing loudly. I don't think I chew that loudly. That's one where I have to disagree. I do admit sometimes I do chew with my mouth open by chance, but I don't think it's as often as she made it seem to be. She may seems like I'm like, um, I think if you're, you're paying attention to what I'm chewing, then of course you notice that I'm chewing loudly. But I'm not, I don't chew that loudly. I don't think. I don't. Okay. The only reason why it's not outside is because something got lifted off her patio. And so that's the only reason I'm like, "Okay, I kind of don't want to have the cooler outside because I just don't want to get stolen." Right. It's a nice cooler. Way. Yeah. Yeah. So where's the cooler now? Is this still outside or is it inside? It's actually in the living room because I haven't put it away yet from our last thing that we were doing. I think the last thing that we hosted. Yeah, for dinner. That's fair. If things are getting taken from outside, you want to, why would you want to leave things out there? Yeah, that's very irresponsible. Yeah, right. And sure, it makes it makes the living space inconvenient at the time, but you're just protecting your goods. Until you move to new space, then of course you'll be more practical about that decision, right? Yeah, exactly. I got you. I got you. Is there anything else? There's another one, right? Oh, yeah. And then like Toby getting locked out. I mean, whatever. It's, it's very understandable. Yeah. But the first time it happened, it was, it was pretty bad. Like, uh, I think it was in the middle of the day and I was like, I had like a bunch of meetings and like the fire alarms going off. And that's the reason why I wasn't like helping out and like sticking the bot, like the bigger box in the door. Um, and then I was like in meetings or like calls or something. And then, you know, you kind of like hear him running around, right? And so like, it's like, it's weirdly quiet. Like, why is it so quiet? Yeah. And then when I found him, it was, he was like, he looks super shell-shocked. I was like, "Holy [ __ ]!" But I found it. [Laughter] That's totally understandable because like, sometimes you just don't know. Running behind you. And then he's so lip. Yeah. I, I will say that if you've never lived with like a pet before, which is like the same with me too, yeah, it is probably very a weird lifestyle or even just like, like a, a sense that you don't have that you don't, it's a muscle that you haven't like exercised. Yeah, it's like a furry kid who can't talk. What were the ones did you listen to the episode? I remember probably did. So there was the dancing one. [Laughter] Which one? The dumb thing. Did you say that one? No, no. Dumpling. I know. Oh, yeah. Oh, the dump, the dumpling one. The dancing one. So those two. Resist. Those two. The dumpling ones. Yes, I did. So that one and the dancing one, right? Sure. Okay. So the dumpling one, guys, there's just right ways to do this. I, I agree. Right? When you, when you go to a restaurant, how are they fried? All around? No, they're fried a proper way. Yeah. Right? So I'm just saying that if you're going to make them, why not just do them the proper way? I have restaurants too. There's operations. You know, like if, if you know our staff was doing things just the way that they liked, right? We would, we would go out of business. Right? So I just bring those same principles back home. And here's the thing, here's the thing. You like it when I have that type of like standard for other things. So why are you, why are you blurring the lines when it's convenient for you, right? I will acknowledge that yes, you were trying to do me a favor and cooking for me because I had a stressful day. So you made me some frozen dumplings. But no shame to the frozen. Yeah, it is an easy meal. Um, so I acknowledge that. And that's where I think that's why I did say sorry. I did say sorry. I did say sorry. Um, but I think just when I was being stressed out as I was, and when you hear just, I don't know, just like ice cubes going into a frying pan and just flash all this splattering. And then I'm thinking about all the oil that's getting all over the counter and over the, the stove. I'm like, "Someone's gonna have to clean that." I'm stressing out when you could have just been like, "Foreign."
[Laughter]
[Music]
That like blindsided me. I was like, "Why is she so mad at this?" And I didn't like that one was, I think was handled relatively well, like where I tried to squash it right there and try to make her feel better because I think you did explain yourself pretty quickly. Or I'm in that moment. So I see where she was coming from. Um, but yeah, it was very late. I wasn't as drunk. It's one of those things too, you know, when you're like, when everyone else is like at a certain spot and you're like, "All right, I'm not feeling this." Yeah. Yeah. And I, and I thought everyone else was down to go home. And she was like, "Let's go." I'm like, "Hey, babe, chill. Like, whatever. I apologize. I apologize for that one." Yeah.
[Laughter]
