Reverse Grey Hair & Thinning By 50% (Do These 7 Things)

If you think your gray hair and thinning hair are just a part of you getting older, scientists just proved you wrong. Researchers recently documented something that most people thought could never happen. Gray hair turning dark again. Not because of a dye, not because of a new medication, because the environment inside the body changed. That completely changes how we think about hair loss. Because your follicles aren't simply aging. They're responding responding to inflammation, nutrient deficiencies, poor circulation, hormones, stress. And the good news is every one of those things is something you can influence.

So today, I'm going to walk you through a 14-day protocol built around these seven biggest factors that determine whether your follicles weaken or finally get the support they need to grow stronger, healthier hair. So, it's actually attacking your follicles. I call these the invisible villains because you can't see them, but they're sabotaging your hair every single day.

The first villain is inflammation. This is chronic low-grade inflammation that quietly disrupts the follicles and shortens its growth cycle. The second is oxidative stress. Think of it as rust. Free radicals damaging the cells that produce both your hair and its pigment. Third, nutrient deficiencies. Your follicles are a tiny factory, and if it doesn't have raw materials, production slows down. Fourth is poor circulation. If blood isn't reaching the scalp, oxygen and nutrients aren't reaching the follicle. Fifth, we have hormonal imbalance. Hormones like insulin and cortisol directly affect the hair cycle. Sixth is a big one. It's vitamin D deficiency. And we're going to come back to this one in a big way because it's the first thing I check with almost everyone. Seventh is insulin resistance. When your blood sugar is a mess, your whole hormonal environment shifts and your follicles feel it. And finally, we have mitochondrial dysfunction. Your follicle cells need energy to divide and to produce hair. When the mitochondria, the little batteries within your cells aren't firing, the whole operation slows down.

Okay, that's the problem. Now, let me give you the solution, and I'm going to build it for you day by day so you don't have to memorize some list. Now, don't try to remember everything. Just follow along two days at a time.

Days one and two, your job is to remove the damage. Before we add anything, we stop the bleeding. For the first two days, your job is to actively remove the things that are damaging your follicles. So, you're going to stop the rancid fats. They're called seed oils and vegetable oils. Here's a list of them. There's eight you want to avoid because they create inflammation. We have corn oil, called canola oil in the UK, cottonseed oil, canola oil, sunflower oil, safflower oil, soybean oil, rice bran oil, and grape seed oil. You're also going to reduce or remove processed junk food. Anything that comes packaged in a box or a bag. You're going to cut out excess sugar. And if you smoke, this is a good time to pull back. And if you drink alcohol, you want to cut it out or at least limit your alcohol intake.

Look, here's why all of this matters so much. Every one of those things I just listed drives inflammation and floods your body with these free radicals. That oxidative stress directly damages your hair follicles. And research suggests it actually accelerates the graying of your hair by burning out the pigment producing cells. Seed oils in particular are these fragile fats found in 80% of the food supply in the United States and they oxidize very easily inside of your body. You're basically pouring gasoline on the fire every time you eat them. Look, it's no coincidence that I have removed all of these inflammatory habits from my diet and I'm turning 42 in just a couple of months and I don't have a single gray hair on me and my hair I think is is pretty thick and healthy. So, for 48 hours, we're going to stop fueling that fire.

But removing the problem isn't enough. Now, we have to feed the follicle. Days 3 and four, this is how we do it. Your hair is almost entirely made of protein, a protein called keratin. So, if you're not eating enough quality protein, you are literally not giving your body the bricks it needs to build healthy hair. So, on days three and four, we load up on protein. Quality protein at every meal. Aim to get at least 30 grams of protein at each meal. Collagen being one of those proteins, are actually one of the key proteins because they provide specific amino acids that support the hair structure. Whole eggs, meaning eggs with the yolk, are also one of my favorites here. It's one of the most complete foods on the planet. It's God's multivitamin packed with biotin and protein, which are the building blocks that your follicles crave. And the healthy omega-3 fats in eggs calm inflammation around the follicle. Some other great sources of protein include small fatty fish like wild caught sardines and salmon, grass-fed beef, and even organic poultry like chicken and turkey.

And then we have the minerals because this is where so many people are silently deficient and they have no idea. Copper, for example, which your body needs to produce pigment. Zinc, which is critical for follicle repair. Iron when it's appropriate for you. And I'll tell you in a minute why iron is a massive deal, especially for women and the B vitamins that power the whole process. Here's a fact that most people have no idea about in women. Low iron stores, what is measured as ferritin on your blood test, are strongly linked to hair shedding. You could have completely normal blood counts, you're not even anemic, but still have low ferritin where your hair doesn't grow properly. I've seen women chase every shampoo and serum on earth, but the real problem was a number on the lab that the doctor never bothered to check. So, feed the follicle, give it the raw materials.

Now, let's get to how to deliver those materials properly. And that's day five and day six, restoring blood flow. You can eat all the right nutrients in the world, but if the blood isn't reaching your scalp, none of it gets to the follicle. The follicle is at the very end of the supply line. It's the last stop on the train. So on days five and six, we open up circulation. You do this by going for a walk, getting daily steps every single day, adding in resistance training because muscle drives circulation and metabolic health. You can also do a daily scalp massage. Just a few minutes with your fingertips, which research has shown to increase hair thickness over time by stimulating the follicles directly. You also want to eat foods that support nitric oxide. Nitric oxide helps to relax and open up your blood vessels. This is key for blood circulation. So, you want to include foods like green leafy vegetables, even beets, and getting some sunlight on your skin also helps with this. Some other ways to increase nitric oxide are humming, singing, breathing through your nose and not your mouth, and even sauna therapy and red light therapy. Look, when you improve circulation, you deliver more oxygen and nutrients straight to your follicle. And what you're doing is essentially waking up its metabolism. You are turning the lights back on in the factory.

Now, we have days 7 and 8, which is the hormone reset. Now, we go upstream to the hormones because hormones are the master switches. Your goal here is to lower the hormone insulin, also to improve sleep and reduce your stress. So you can do this by getting out and getting morning sunlight 5-10 minutes. But this helps to reset your hormonal rhythm for the entire day. And if it's appropriate for you, practice some time-restricted feeding and give your body a break from the constant insulin spikes. I'm a big fan of having all of your meals within a 6-hour window. So that could be between 12 and 6:00 p.m. or 8:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m.

Here's the connection that most people miss. When you're chronically stressed, your cortisol stays elevated. And there's a well-documented condition where significant stress literally pushes a large number of your hairs out of the growth phase and into the shedding phase all at once. People go through a divorce, a loss, a major illness, and two or three months later, their hair starts falling out in handfuls. That is not a coincidence. That's the stress hormone taking over the follicle. So, we reset the hormones. We calm the system down.

And this brings me to the one question I ask almost everyone who comes to me struggling with thinning hair. What's the very first nutrient that I check? Vitamin D. I need you to really understand why this is very important because this is the part that connects everything. Inside your hair follicles, there are actually vitamin D receptors, tiny docking stations specifically built to receive vitamin D. Think about that. Your follicles were designed with a dock that vitamin D is the key for. And in the research, low vitamin D has been associated with with several different forms of hair loss. You see, when those receptors don't get what they need, the follicles struggle to cycle properly. Vitamin D also helps to regulate your immune system and support overall health of the follicle environment. It's not a minor player here. This is foundational.

And here's where most people get tripped up. They say, "Well, Ben, I get sun. I'm good. I'm probably fine." But it's not that simple. Where you live, your skin tone, your age, how much time you actually spend outside, whether or not you use sunscreen and sunglasses, the season, all of this affects how much vitamin D you actually make. That's why so many people, even in sunny places, test low. I've seen clients that I've worked with that live in sunny Florida, like me, yet they're still deficient. Another problem is when you test your vitamin D, the reference range on that lab report is between 30 and 80 or 30 and 100. So if it comes back at 33 or 43, your doctor is not going to flag it as being low. But that's actually low when you look at it from a functional lens. You want your vitamin D over 60. That is 60.

So naturally, the question becomes, how do I raise my vitamin D? What do I eat? What do I take? Well, you can get some vitamin D from foods. It'll bump it up a little bit. And my favorite vitamin D rich foods include eggs with the yolk. We spoke about that earlier. Fatty fish like salmon. We also talked about that earlier. But also mushrooms as well. But look, your hair simply isn't aging. It's responding to what's happening inside your body. And if you're dealing with the thinning hair, more grays, even low energy and poor sleep, or you simply don't feel like yourself anymore, there's a good chance you're just not getting enough vitamin D. And the problem is people supplement with vitamin D, but they get the cheapest stuff found at the store. They take it for a few weeks, they feel nothing, and it doesn't change their labs a bit. And they assume vitamin D just doesn't work for me. It wasn't the vitamin D. It was the wrong supplement of vitamin D. See, that's why I personally use and tell all my students who are low in vitamin D to use Myoscience Vitamin D3 and K2. Why? Because it's high quality and highly absorbable. It's also third-party tested and it's designed to support the exact systems that we talked about today, including healthy hair follicles, energy, immune health, and healthy aging. And for this deal, it's less than a cup of coffee per day to support your hair and your body with the things it actually needs.

All right, let's keep building the protocol. Days 9 and 10. This is the cellular repair. This is where the magic happens, and it actually happens while you're asleep. Your goal on days 9 and 10 is to dial in your sleep. And when I say sleep, I mean quality sleep. Because when you sleep, your body shifts into repair mode. It ramps up a process called autophagy, which is your body's cellular cleanup crew. It goes through your cells and it cleans out damaged junk. These are junk materials found inside your cells. It's kind of like Pac-Man eating the junk. And your follicles get repaired during this window. Your antioxidant systems also get restored. And here's a beautiful detail. Melatonin, the hormone your body produces in darkness to help you sleep, isn't just a hormone. It's one of the most powerful antioxidants for your body. There are actually melatonin receptor sites in your hair and skin cells. And melatonin acts as a powerful antioxidant right there at the root of your hair. So, when people tell me they're running on 5 hours of sleep, but they're taking all the right supplements, I tell them, "Hey, you're trying to renovate a house while the construction crew is on permanent vacation." It's not going to work. You see, the repair happens at night. Protect your sleep like your hair depends on it, because it does. And some simple tips for you to get better sleep. No food at least 3 hours before bed. Make sure that bedroom is cold. Studies show 65 to 68° F. Wear a $5 sleep mask. and consider mouth taping to make sure you breathe through your nose, which also helps with the nitric oxide piece.

Now, we have days 11 and 12. Protect the pigment. Now, we focus specifically on those grays. Here's what's actually happening with gray hair. At the base of each follicle, you have pigment producing cells called melanocytes. Their job is to make melanin, the pigment that gives your hair its color. Gray hair shows up when those cells get damaged or burnt out, often from years of oxidative stress. So on days 11 and 12, we protect them. We bring in copper-rich foods because copper is a required mineral for producing pigment. My favorite copper-rich foods are beef liver, oysters, dark chocolate, like 80% dark or higher, cashews, and shiitake mushrooms. And the mushrooms also have that vitamin D component. We also load up on antioxidants and polyphenols. These are the colorful compounds that make up the foods like berries and green leafy vegetables and green tea. This helps fight the oxidative stress that's burning out those pigment cells. I would also add extra virgin olive oil and turmeric seasoning. But understand this, gray hair isn't only about color. It's a window into the health of those pigment producing cells. You protect the cell and you give your pigment a fighting chance. This is exactly what the Colombia study showed us. When the internal stress came down, some of those cells came back online.

Days 13 and 14, the maintenance routine. Now, we take everything you learn and we make it simple and repeatable. So, this becomes a lifestyle, not just a two-week experiment. Here is your daily rhythm from here on out. In the morning, get your protein. When you break your fast, make sure it has at least 30g of high-quality protein. Also, take two capsules or sometimes even four or higher depending on your vitamin D levels of a high-quality vitamin D like Myoscience Vitamin D. Have it with that first meal of the day. Then get some movement, some steps, maybe resistance training, but definitely get some sunlight even on an overcast day. That's beneficial. Eat healthy fats. Right? You're getting rid of the seed oils and you're replacing it with butter, ghee, beef tallow, avocado oil, olive oil, coconut oil. These are healthier fats. And build your meals around anti-inflammatory whole foods. Let's keep it simple, like single ingredient foods. Avoid foods that are in bags and boxes. And of course, protect your sleep at night and overall keep your stress in check. That's it. That's the whole game. You're not trying to be perfect. You're just making progress. Your follicles don't respond to just one good day. They respond to a new pattern in consistency.

Now, I'd be doing you a disservice if I didn't warn you about the mistakes because these are the things that are quietly sabotaging people even when they're trying so hard. Mistake number one, taking supplements while eating garbage. Supplements are to supplement a healthy diet. The pills don't work if the foundation is broken. Mistake number two, not eating enough protein. This is the single most common thing I see. So, aim to get 30 grams of protein at the bare minimum at all of your meals. Mistake number three, crash dieting. Look, when you slash your calories and do it too hard, too fast, and for too long, your body will be stressed. And guess what? Hair is a non-essential. It's not important. The body will release that hair because of the stress. It's not needed for survival. It's only needed really for vanity metrics. People who lose weight too fast, they shed hair. Mistake four is smoking. Chokes off circulation in the scalp and drives massive oxidative stress. Mistake number five, poor sleep. We already covered why. The repair happens at night. Mistake number six, pouring money into harsh hair products while completely ignoring what's happening inside your body. You see, you can't fix an internal problem from the outside. And mistake number seven, expecting results in just 3 days. Hair has a growth cycle. The shedding slows first, usually within the first couple of weeks, and the visible regrowth and pigment changes build over the following months. So, give it time. Stick and stay. As I say, it's bound to pay. The people who quit at day three never find out what 90 days could do for them. That's at seven moves, 14 days, one new internal environment.
