So, this data center is powered by waves in the ocean. A new startup called Panthalasa just raised $140 million to bring AI computing to the open sea.
Each node stands at 85 meters tall, almost the height of the Big Ben with most of the structure hidden underwater. Inside a sealed container sits an AI server cooled naturally by the seawater. And the bobbing motion of the waves forces water through an internal turbine generating the electricity needed to power the AI chips.
There's no engines, there's no hinges, and there's no gear boxes that could break down in harsh ocean conditions. And the vessels can even drive themselves to their destination using the shape of their hull to propel through waves without a motor. And once deployed, they connect users through Starlink satellites.
See, traditional data centers consume massive amounts of electricity and fresh water just to keep their servers cool, which is becoming a serious bottleneck as AI demand explodes. By moving offshore, this eliminates both problems at once since the ocean provides unlimited cooling and waves provide unlimited power.
