The ego or self constructs all identities for us, and we realized that I am not what my ego says. I am not a fixed entity, but rather a structure of thought and identity formation. So, thoughts, with the help of the ego, create identity. Now, let's move on to the next part, which is emotions. If you pay attention, you'll see that our emotions seem much more real than our thoughts. This is because most people become one with their emotions. One might even doubt their thoughts, but we almost never doubt our emotions.
I want us to sit with this for a minute, everyone, and see if this is true or not. Can you and I question our thoughts, saying, "This is a thought, and this is not me"? But when an emotion arises, whether it's anger, sadness, or anything else, do we take them more seriously? Do we doubt them or not? And this is why suffering lives here. It lives precisely in emotion, not just in thought, but in an identity with emotion. Please, let's all write this down: when we give emotions identity, they become meaningful with the help of the mind and ego, and here we suffer. So, thought, in an identity with emotion, begins to cause our suffering. Let's not allow anything we feel to be named. We want to experience feelings without identity now.
So, if we want to experience feelings without identity, what should we do next? We must be mindful of the mind, which immediately wants to fill that empty space, question, assign meaning, and interpret. So, I want us to separate these from the meaning the mind wants to give to the feeling. We are only looking for raw feeling. Raw feeling without meaning. We can do this, everyone. Emotions that show themselves one by one, without translation and without meaning like "this is heavy," "this is sadness," "this is depression," without allowing anything to attach to it. I want us to practice looking at feelings as empty and without meaning. In every feeling you enter, that feeling itself is not empty again because the mind and ego have a story for this feeling, like "Yes, my mother has passed away now, I am grieving now, I am sad now, the situation here is like this now, this is it." See how a story always attaches to it and gives it meaning. Now, what do we want to do? We want to cut the story again and return to the feeling.
If you realize that sadness is being experienced, and then your mind tells you that this sadness is because of your mother's death, when you cut off the mother's death and return to the feeling, you will realize that the feeling, without translation, without meaning, without a story attached to it, cannot survive, cannot remain. It becomes free and liberated again. Now, bring up a stronger feeling. Don't suppress it. Don't bring it up yourself either. Let it come on its own. As soon as it comes, look at it without a label. See how quickly it moves. Right now, I feel anger. My anger now has a story: "Why aren't they getting it? Why are they slow? Why do I have to explain myself so much?" This has a story. As soon as I separate the story from it, because let's remember that in the story, people are also present. If I now realize that my spouse or boyfriend has cheated on me, that boyfriend or spouse is in it. So, when I cut off the story, the people or the character playing that role immediately falls away.
So, we want to move forward with any feeling without a label, and we realize that nothing is fixed unless the mind constantly explains it. And this process, every time it repeats, the feeling comes, the label attaches to it, and you keep separating the feeling, meaning, and story. You come into that void. Again, that same mind and ego that we are always struggling with, that same mind and ego, one of its tools is to say, "You haven't changed, you haven't become anything." Again, that self-harm. "Oh my, it should be much more now. Oh, you don't know, you've been with [name] for 10 years, and I still don't know this part." This needs to be cut off, as this is one of the tools of the mind and ego. So, if you start journaling, "Today I was like this, then my feeling became like this, I got stuck in thought so much, so much in feeling," and day after day, later you can measure how much progress you've made. So, how many times do we repeat this process? The feeling comes, you cut off the label, you remain in the raw feeling itself, you separate the story from it again.
Now, everyone, you clearly understand that this feeling, without translation, meaning, ownership, or giving it identity, has no energy. So, now you understand, everyone, that another one of our practices, please write this in the comments too, is that from this moment on, if you haven't done it until today, we will remove "I." That is, from this moment on, each of you, even when you want to speak, you will say, "If you remember, many of you who have been with me for years, I used to say consciousness means not saying 'hello.' We say 'greetings.' When someone started speaking, they would say 'hello,' and I would say, 'You were not present.'" Or, from this moment on, our practice is not to say "I." Why do I keep pushing? "Teacher, do you remember how much I used to argue with the children in previous webinars who said 'Teacher, how long did it take me to drop this word 'Teacher'?" So, from this moment on, each of you who speaks, be so aware that when you are speaking, you are hearing yourself.
