Marion, how much of a fan were you of the previous two films in this series, and what was your reaction on being invited to be part of this finale?
Once the schedule's matched, obviously. Well, first of all, I was a big, um, fan of Batman since the first, uh, Tim Burton's movie. And then, and then I think somehow Batman got lost. And when I saw Batman Begins, I thought that he was back. And, uh, and I start, um, that Chris Nolan totally reinvented the character, this amazing character, absolutely. Um.
And it's your second film with Christopher Nolan, isn't it? Why, to your mind, has he consistently delivered some of modern cinema's sort of finest work, I think? And what has he achieved, would you say, with The Dark Knight Rises?
Well, because he's a true artist. And, um, he's, he's one of the smartest people I've ever met. And, uh, he's, he's an amazing technician. And at the same time, he's an amazing director for actors, um, which is rare, actually. And that's why he, um, he directs those huge, big movies, but he makes them totally human and hard-hearted. So it's a hard balancing act to pull off, isn't it? So impressive. I'm so intelligent, such a spectacle, and yet kind of accessible, but, um, extraordinary, really.
And Miranda Tate isn't from, um, the DC Comics or the graphic novels, but an entirely new character. What kind of scope or freedom did that give you in creating her?
Well, you know, with each character, if even if this character, uh, already exists or if it's like totally new, you have to make it yours. And, uh, you have to find, um, the truth and the authenticity of of this, uh, person's soul and heart. So, um, yeah, it's, I, I really like her. I can relate to her because she, she wants to do good things and she wants to, you know, she wants to be, um, connected to her world.
And what's Miranda sort of standing within Gotham society when we first meet her in the film? And why do you think she makes such an attractive ally, really, to, uh, to Bruce Wayne?
Well, because they understand each other. Um, they want the same thing. They want, um, yeah, they want to be true to their world and what they have to achieve.
And Batman's been absent from Gotham for around eight years, and he's withheld from us in the film as well for for some time. So we're thrilled when we finally see him again. What was it like for you, though, coming, um, personally coming face to face with, um, with him as the Bat for the first time, with Christian Bale as the Bat for the first time in a costume, in his costume?
Well, it was actually very impressive. I was, I have to say, that day I felt like an 8-year-old. I, um, I couldn't even, I was so impressed, I couldn't even go and say hello, like normally to him, like I had done the the days before. It was, you know, you just him in the costume. Yeah, yeah, yeah. I was totally impressed. I was, I was speechless. I was like, I remember being with my assistant and she was like, "Are you so dumb? Just go and say hello." I was like, "I can't. He's not, I mean, he's not Christian Bale anymore. He's Batman." You know, it was kind of funny. She made fun of me. But, um.
And you've got several scenes with, um, Tom Hardy as well, one of the UK's finest, um, acting talents. How did he impress you as Batman's nemesis, especially acting as he has to through that mask as well?
Well, he's so charismatic. Uh, he really is, uh, an amazing actor. And, uh, and it was, you know, you have to to make this character exist, exists when you only see this part of, uh, of a human being. And, um, and he's like, he really, he really is like Christian Bale. He's so, he goes so deep into a character. It's not just what you see, it's all that he creates to give, um, depth, uh, to a character. He, he's, he's an amazing actor, very much so.
