I think I need to do a little reintroduction for people on here who I am. So, I'm Lucy Biggers. Right now, I'm the head of social media for the free press. But for 5 years of my 20s, I was a climate activist. I interviewed Greta Thunderberg. I've interviewed AOC. I pushed ideas like the Green New Deal, plastic straw bands, plastic bag bands, anything you could think of that is like the typical climate activist, I pushed those things for half my 20s.
In that time, I got a lot of value from being part of the group. I identified as a climate activist and I thought I was on the right side of history and that these ideas were so important to push. Um even during the time when I was really deep in the climate movement, I would have some questions like why we're protesting pipelines when you know the pipelines were already approved. Maybe we shouldn't have done that. Um or the fact that like you know oil pipelines are better for the environment and safer than transporting these materials on trains. or you know the idea that plastic has a lower carbon footprint than uh glass and wood like I would sometimes see these contradictory facts but my ideology and identification was so tied up in the group that when I would see those things I would push them away.
That all changed when I left my last job where I'd been in a visible role as a climate influencer and I lived through co and I had my first son and I think those two experiences of living through co and seeing the entire world shut down plastic proliferated everywhere but it was like not a big deal. And then our carbon emissions only dropping by maybe 5%, maybe it was like 20% at its peak, but barely making a dent in our climate emissions even though the world was shut down. And that's when I started to think, what is the climate movement not wanting from us?
Because >> let me stop here and just throw a little bit of shade in here. Um, this is why I say when people evolve and they grow up and they learn more, they realize that propaganda was being pushed on them for profitability. There are so many different groups and so many different agendas. Uh, even myself, you know, I used to watch the documentaries and then I realized that a lot of documentaries a lot of times are slanted for profitability reasons because it's all capitalistic. And I used to watch documentaries about climate change. And I'm not saying that we as humans don't affect what happens on this earth when it comes to climate. But I'm saying that we need to educate ourselves even more and further and look at opposing views.
Leftists a lot of times they have a really hard time with that because once they get caught up in the propaganda, you see it happening today where people calling Trump a fascist. Like where did they get that word? Where did they get oligarchy from? you know, they got that from propaganda that was being pushed to them. That's not an original thought. They didn't look up for that themselves. When you see the narrative against ICE when it comes to Trump versus how they treated Obama and Obama o uh you know he deported way more people you know that is propaganda that's being pushed.
