Turn Up The Fire | Jentezen Franklin

I want to go for just a few moments to the book of First Kings. First Kings chapter 18. I'll begin reading with verse 30 of First Kings chapter 18. Then Elijah said to all of the people, "Come near to me." So all the people came near, and he repaired the altar of the Lord that was broken down. By the way, at at uh 5:00 this afternoon, we'll be building the same altar that Elijah did. This is the first Sunday of the month, and we always have a prayer and praise one-hour service that is powerful. If you've never been a part of it, it is it is essential to this church and it's part of everything that happens.

And Elijah took 12 Stones according to the number of the tribes, according to the the sons of Jacob, to whom the word of the Lord had come, saying, "Israel shall be your name." Then with the stones he built an altar in the name of the Lord, and he made a trench around the altar large enough to hold two seeds of seed. And he put the wood in order. Notice, said he, "Put the wood in order. Cut the bull in pieces, laid it on the wood, poured water, pots of water on the burnt sacrifice and on the wood." He said, "Do it a second time and do it a third time."

Verse 35: The water ran all over and filled the trench with the water. And it came to pass at the time of the evening sacrifice, Elijah the prophet came near and called on the name of the Lord, the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Ja-cob. And he said these words, "Let it be known this day that you are God in Israel." These are the words that got me. That I, your servant. I wonder if we have a strong enough walk with God that we could say that with assurance, that when we pray for people, when we pray for miracles, when we pray for our families, that we say, "Let it be known this day that you are God in Gainesville," or wherever you're watching this, "and that I am your servant." I love that. And I've done all these things at your word.

Verse 38: Then the fire of the Lord fell and consumed the burnt sacrifice, the wood, the stones, the dust, and licked up the water that was in the trench. And when all the people saw it, they fell on their faces and they said, "The Lord, he is God. The Lord, he is God."

I want to preach to you this morning on on the importance of this Holy Fire and what it means for us. How to build a fire in your life spiritually. Jack London, who is famous for writing short books, we used to read them when I was just a little kid, and he amazed me. I loved his books. He had books about grizzly bear attacks and and little things like boys like, you know, wolves and out in the Yukon and being out in the cold and the wilderness and making a way and fighting and shooting and killing and making making it through the wilderness experiences. And he had a had a book called "To Build a Fire." And in the book, he makes the point that how essential fire was to that first generation of pioneers that came to America and really to the whole continent. And he tells the story of a hiker in Canada and the Yukon and how that he had his dog with him, and he's about to go out into the extreme wilderness. And he meets an older man. And this old man, who knows that area and knows weather and knows the wilderness, he's been tried and been through everything you can imagine. And he says to him that you need to be very aware of the extreme cold. The hiker is competent, but he has no idea how cold it can get. And the way that they measured in that book, he said, the way that they measured is they would spit on the ground and they knew the temperature by how long it took the spit to freeze. And if they spit and it froze in mid-air, that meant you do not need to be out. You at least need to be near a fire. And these were little secrets that the old man shared with this young man. The biggest piece of advice that he gave him, that if it's 50 below or more, you never should go by yourself. You need another person with you if you're going to have any chance of surviving.

And so the young man and his dog, Brave, he listened, but he felt, "I can handle it." He goes out and tragically, at some point, an accident happens and he breaks through I and he goes under a river, freezing, and comes back up. And he manages to get out. He's freezing to death. Uh, but he knew instantly that he had to take his moccasins off, which were what they made their shoes out of and boots out of. And he gets them off and he gets under a a spruce tree and he begins to build a fire. But something happened to his fingers. They begin to literally freeze. It was so cold that he couldn't even he get he got the little moss and some sticks and got up under a sp-spruce tree and he's sitting there and he's got it all and he's got matches. And thankfully, they were in his pack so they didn't get wet. And he and he tries to strike the matches, but his fingers won't work. And so he tries with his teeth. And over and over and over he's trying. And finally, he gets a fire, a little fire lit. His hand was so cold that he that he put the moss and the sticks in his hand because he couldn't feel it anyhow. And that's how and he blew on the fire and got it going. And he's finally got a fire. So he's got a chance. But all of a sudden, he reached up and pulled one of the twigs that was right there to throw it on the fire because it had been protected, but the other limbs had snow on them. And when he did, one limb dumped its snow, and all of the limbs and all of the snow came came cascading down and completely smothered the fire and put it out. And most of Jack London's stories don't have happy endings. And I don't want to be a spoiler for the book if you're reading it, but the man died. He died and his dog died. And uh, ain't that a picture? Amen. But it tells you that the fire is essential. The fire is essential. He died by a dead fire that was once lit.

Fire is essential spiritually in our lives. You've got to have it in your home. You've got to have it to run your car, or your car won't go. And the same is true spiritually. If you don't have the fire, you won't go where God wants you to go and do what God wants you to do. I'm talking about a spiritual passion and fire for God. We must have a burning fire in this church. The burning fire of the Holy Ghost. In 2025, we must have the fire of the Holy Ghost on everything that we do in this building and with every building that God has given us. We need the fire of the Holy Ghost everywhere in our lives and in our families.

Jeremiah had it in his bones. He said, "It's like a fire shut up in my bones." I tell you, he was a he was a Pentecostal preacher with a fever. Amen. He had a he had a fever. And he said, "I feel like God is so real that I don't I don't I wasn't going to preach anymore, but I've got the fever. I've got the fire burning inside of me." And then Isaiah got hot lips. The Bible said that the angel came and brought a coal from off the altar of heaven and touched his lips. We got a lot of hot heads, but we don't have many hot lips that are ready to praise and say, "Lord, here am I, send me. I'll go wherever you want me to go." And then in Acts chapter 2, the Bible said the Holy Spirit filled the upper room on the day of Pentecost, and the flame was over their heads. Each one of them had the flame on their heads. We need the fire of the Holy Ghost. I want it in my bones. I want it on my mouth as I preach this morning. I want it over my head, controlling and purging my thoughts. I want it down in my soul. I don't want to dry up. I don't want to die because the fire has died. The fire of the Holy Ghost needs to be in this pulpit. The fire of the Holy Ghost needs to be on these singers. The fire of the Holy Ghost needs to be on every musician. We need the fire of the Holy Ghost in the seats. Amen. We need the fire. I don't want to be a polar bear in the pulpit and you icicles in the pews. We need the fire of God. We need it. And the Holy Ghost is the fire of God. He shall baptize you in the Holy Ghost and fire. Somebody say amen. We need the Holy Ghost on our musicians. We need the fire on our greeters. We need the fire on our ushers. We need the fire on our pastors and our altar workers and our bus drivers. We don't do this just to be doing it. When you have the fire, it'll shine. It'll warm. It'll help. It'll heal. People need somebody who's on fire just to make it through their wilderness experience. I want to say it like this: we need the fire on our hand claps. There's a difference between a hand clap and a holy fire hand clap. We need the fire on our shouts. We need the fire on our worship. We need the fire on our praise. We need the fire on our giving. Hallelujah. I want the fire on everything that we do. Take a praise break and say, "Lord, let the fire fall on me."

Fire is essential. We must be intense. We must be hot. We must be we must burn out sin and apathy. Thank God for the fire that we have in this church. We must never lose it. There's a process to the fire. You see, God's interested in the fire being in the place. God planned it. God desired it. He told Elijah, "Go up on Mount Carmel. Climb that mountain and build me a fire." Everybody say, "God wants a fire." God wants fire. You see, when you understand that God planned it, he wants the fire to burn. Elijah taught us fire building 101. Notice the process. Number one, he took 12 Stones and he built he to and stacked them on top of each other and built an altar. You see, we need we need to remember that there has to be a foundation if the fire is going to fall. We have to have the right foundation. The right foundation. They were found-found-foundational stones that were part of the fire falling on that altar. I believe today that the 12 Stones of a foundation are still important. The foundation that Jesus is Lord. That he was born of a virgin. That's one of the stones. We believe in the supernatural virgin birth of Jesus Christ. We believe that he was the way, the truth, and the life. And I don't mean to insult any other religions, but there's there's no other way. There is no other way to the Father but by Jesus. If you're following anything, if you're taking any other path, you're going to go to hell. You're going to go into eternity without God if you don't turn to Jesus and turn quick. I'm telling you, there's only two fires: the fire of His presence and the fires of hell. And Jesus said, "I am the way, the truth, and the life." Every other one is a robber and a thief. Hallelujah. You got to build the fire on that. We we can't have a little bit of this and a little bit of that. They weren't they weren't New Age stones. They weren't little glowing little stones, you know. They got these little man-made religions and they actually carry the rocks around with them. That's a demon that you're letting get in a rock. What what you throw that away and you get one rock, Jesus. And then you put another foundation: prayer and praise. All the stones, fasting and prayer and seeking God. The word of God is one of those stones. 12 Stones. And then he said, "Put on the 12 Stones." After you get the foundation laid, and it's Jesus, he said, "Get the wood in order." I never noticed that before. I knew he put wood, but I never saw those words: "in order." "In order." Get the wood and lay it out in order so that oxygen can flow through the wood. Let there be order to it. There's an order to the fire falling, and you got to find your place in that. You got to get in place. You can't you can't just let the fire burn on everybody else and you sit out there. You got to get yourself in order and get after it and say, "I'm I'm serious about serving the Lord." I can't just be lukewarm. God will spew me out of His mouth. I'm telling you, He warns the end-time church will be a bunch of lukewarm Christians. But I'm not going to be one. I'm not, I'm not, I'm not, I'm not. Whatever I have to do, oh God, let me be on fire for You. And I'm going to be get in order. In other words, get your priorities right. Priority is not making money. Priority is not this, that, and the other. All those M-material things will pass away. You better get your priority back to God. Get back to the altar. Get back to the Bible. Get back to tears flowing down your face. Get back to worship and praise and living and dwelling in Jesus Christ.

And then he put the bullock on the fire. In order to have a fire, notice that you can never get away from sacrifice. Oh, we got a lot of attenders, but we don't have a lot of people who sacrifice. We don't have a lot of people who participate. We don't have a lot of people who give of them-selves and their talents and their resources because people think that sacrifice doesn't matter. Jesus paid it all. And it means, but notice, you won't have the fire, and you'll only have the fire in proportion to the sacrifice you offer God. As a pastor, I don't even like to see people sacrifice financially when I know that they need the money. I don't want them to give. I don't want them, in the natural, you understand what I'm saying? I've actually seen people where I wouldn't even take their money. But then the Lord would check me and say, "But you don't understand what I'm doing. That seed is connected to so much." And there's no manipulation around here about that. But I'm going to tell you something: you better never forget what God has done for you, and you better always keep sacrifice on the alt-your success is not your brilliance. Your success is not even your hard work. God opened doors that no man can shut. God favored you. God blessed you. God brought your name up in the right circles. And you better keep bringing Him the sacrifice. Always, always, always. I give you everything. I give you everything, Lord. You can have my home. You can have my car. You can have whatever I have. I don't want it without You. I'd rather have You, view any day. It's not even close. It's not even close. Hallelujah. Hallelujah. If you're going to have the fire, what I'm trying to preach is, is there such a thing as a spirit of sacrifice? And the moment you lose the spirit of sacrifice, you you think you outgrow it. You think it it's not needed because of who you are and what you have. You have to sacrifice, or God's fire won't ever fall on you. So these people are not crazy standing up here. They come to rehearsal. They've been doing it for decades. And other people all week long handing out groceries, doing all kinds of stuff. Hundreds of ministries, I'm not exaggerating. People to get in their cars and go to the prisons and do and and facilitate all these services. We have a whole crew. That's what they do. And God sees it as wood that's in order for the sacrifice. God, I give you my everything because we're building a fire.

Elijah, after he got the altar built, he began to pray. And he he he didn't pray a little prayer to check it off his schedule. He didn't pray a little prayer. He prayed a fervent James said, "The effectual fervent prayer." The word fervent is hot, red-hot prayer of a righteous man avails much. I want to pray and I want to see the fire fall. Elijah prayed a fervent prayer, seething prayers, red-hot prayers, an intensity. I remember when I was an evangelist and my brother and I, Richie, would travel and we would do something at every church. We would hold a revival together. God really began to use us because we were so young. I was 20, and I think he was 23, and maybe 24. But but we were so young, we attracted a lot of young people, a lot of teenagers. And we would have in the Sunday School uh rooms, they had little Sunday School departments, they called it. And it was usually just down in the basement somewhere. But we would designate a room. We would ask the pastor, "Can we designate a room to have have a prayer meeting?" And it would start out with just me and Richie showing up. But by the time that revival hit, and sometimes it would go two and three and four weeks, and by the time we had the fire burning, there were teen, mostly teenagers, that were filling that room. And they were 15 and 16 and 14 year olds. And they'd come in. Those sounds in those rooms haunt me. They haunt me because I know that's what this generation needs. We need the fire of intercession and expectancy and intensity. He said, "When we when we ask, when we knock, when we when we seek, we will find. It'll be open." When we do it with the fire of fervency and expectancy. A prayer that says, "Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done in Atlanta, in Gainesville, in Spartanburg, wherever your campus is, in my house, at the Franklin residence, at your residence. Thy kingdom come. Make Atlanta like heaven in Jesus' name."

Build a fire. If you get a fire hot enough, now I'm I'm I'm going to preach the next few minutes. I got nine minutes and I'm going to preach all nine. Don't come up until 9:20. 81918. You've got fire. You get fire hot enough, it'll burn anywhere. It'll burn anything. In 1836, a fire in the U.S. Patent Office, where people submitted their inventions, broke out. And that fire burned all the patents and destroyed all the patents that were there. One of the inventions that had been patented was the original pat for the fire hydrant. It was burned up by a fire. You can get a big enough fire burning that the devil doesn't have a fire hydrant that can put it out. You can get such a fire burning that when the devil tries to put his water on what you know God told you he was going to do, that he can't dampen your faith and dampen your enthusiasm and dampen your fire for God. The devil can't come up with a fire hydrant to put the fire of the Holy Ghost out. You get the fire hot enough, and the fire will burn underwater. Do you know that fire burns underwater? That's how they build those bridges. They get up under there and and and they turn the heat up, and the fire will burn underwater. They work with it, and they have to have an oxygen line, and they have to have a fire line. And somehow, if they can keep the two going, it doesn't matter how deep and how big the water is that they're under, the fire will burn underwater. When the enemy comes in like a flood, what are you going to do? Let it put your fire out? No. You get that wind in the upper room to blowing, and you get that fire to burning, and you can have fire underwater. I'm not denying the enemy comes and it comes like a flood. But I'm telling you that that we can have fire even when the floods have overtaken us. It won't wipe us out because the fire keeps burning underwater. Somebody praise Him right now. You know, there's something called magnesium that is so active, it'll burn underwater. It gets so hot, it'll burn it. You know, the fire will burn if you'll fuel it. You have to have a fire underwater. The enemy will try to drown you with trouble and drown you with problems and drown you in a situation that is overwhelming, and it's coming in so fast you can't stop it. But the fire can burn in burnt-over fields. Do you know a burnt-over field is a phrase that's used to talk about a place where the fire used to burn, but it doesn't burn anymore? But you can get a fire hot enough, and you give it a little time, and that fire will burn again over a burnt-over field. There's a lot of burnt-over fields that I'm preaching to this morning. You had it at one time, but you don't have it now. But if you'll let God this morning, and that's kind of how you have to get about it. I'm not going to let wait until God. I'm I'm waiting on the Spirit. I'm waiting on the Spirit. That's like saying if a tornado is coming through your neighborhood, "I'm upstairs, but I'm waiting on the basement to come and get me." Instead of saying, "Why don't you get in the spirit instead of waiting on the spirit?" Why don't you? The Bible said, "Stir up the gift." Stir it up. You got to get in the spirit. When somebody's preaching like I'm preaching, you have to stir your you have to put wood on the fire. If the fire's going out, put some put a Hallelujah, put a hunger, put a desire. If you desire it, God's fire will find you.

I was looking, and I I was preached in California a couple weeks ago while our wonderful guests were here, and and I saw some of the damage of of the fires that went through. You know what I noticed about that fire? That fire spread, and uh, it just moved through neighborhoods, and it did not care where it went. It did not, it was not, uh, it was not just choosing a certain neighborhood. It would go. It was here's the words I wrote down: it was an out-of-control fire. And Lord, that's what we need. We need an out-of-control fire. Because you know where it burned the most? In ritzy areas, we'd call them ritzy areas, beautiful homes, mansions, and multi-million dollar homes. The fire doesn't care how ritzy. The fire doesn't care how much money. The fire of the Holy Ghost doesn't care who you are and what kind of education and that you're doctor so-and-so. There's going to come situations where your brilliance is not enough. There's going to come situations where your education is not enough, your money is not enough. And that's when you need one of those sparks from that little church that you made fun of. If you don't watch it, one of those sparks get your house, and it'll burn down everything, and you'll find what you've been looking for all your life. Hallelujah. There's life in that fire. There's joy in that fire. The Holy Ghost can burn there. It'll burn. I when I think about burnt-over fields, I think about denominations. The fire used to burn in the Methodists before they put their flags out. Amen. The fire used to burn in the Episcopalian churches. They used to fast and pray and shake, and they called them the Shakers and the Quakers because they'd get under the power of God. The fire used to burn. The fire used to burn in a lot of Pentecostal churches, but now the only fire that burns, the only thing they got is is fire in the kitchen, that's about it. This thing was borned in the fire, and smoke won't do. We've got to have the fire. Fire of the Holy Ghost. Somebody shout amen. Uh, you know, they used to, they used to come to P-I-I-I-I know, I know, I know. I'll remember the little, I'll remember the little church my daddy pastored. People would come to watch us on Sunday night. My mama, she'll be in the she'll be in the next uh service. She sits right down there and and and and and don't ever make fun of people with their standards. And back then, the women didn't cut their hair. And God bless them. Amen. I wish we had more standards like that. Oh, you're crazy. I'm not saying like that, but I'm saying I wish we had some. I I'm not, I'm not, I respect anybody. My mother used to do curls like big curls, and it was higher than the Eiffel Tower. I'm not, I'm not exaggerating. I'm telling you, my mama, I got pictures of her. I wish I'd have brought them, and her hair sitting up like that. And boy, when the Holy Ghost would hit, and there were people who would come, they knew, they knew. You know, people come to Pentecostal church now, they'll be bored. They'll be flipping through their phone. Nothing happening. No fire there. Nobody running, nobody shouting, nobody dancing, nobody in the spirit. See, we're so fleshly. Well, now, now, now, what is he proposing? I I don't know what I've stepped into. You have stepped into the fire. And in Jesus' name, we want the fire. I'm tired of dead religion. It won't heal anybody. I've never seen miracles in dead religion. But you get the church on fire, and watch miracles come. Watch healings come. They we might be a little wild. We might be a little fanatical. But I'd rather have it's a whole lot easier to cool down a fanatic than heat up a corpse. And we got too many corpses and not enough fanatics. I can always pull them over and say, "Now, calm down." But you get old dead head, and they'll sit through a mighty move of God and say, "Isn't that interesting?" Turn to somebody and say, "Which one are you?" I'd rather have a fool on fire than a scholar on ice. Now that you know Greek and Hebrew, so what if you don't ever feel God? If you don't ever have God? If you don't ever experience the presence of God, what good is it?

They used to, they used to come, and I, you know, I was just a little child. I remember, and I used to play the drums, and I could feel it when I was playing the drums. Uh-oh, this one's got it. I I knew when they hit the right song. Oh my, oh my, something's coming. And then you'd hear Sister Jones go. She so. Now, I'm not, I don't want to go back to all of that, but that was like the World War II sirens, incoming, something's coming. And then all of a sudden, Brother Metcalf, I remember Brother Metcalf, he was the he was the runner, and he would take off running. And then another one was the jerker, and they would just, and it was beautiful. And my mama would just start doing like that, and the tower would start coming down. Hallelujah. And getting wider and wider. I'm sorry, I know we look crazy to the world, but I am not ashamed of that Upper Room power. They accused them of being drunk. They were wild. They were they were spreading the sparks all over the city. Now, this is what I came to preach. All that was just get me there, and I found my my [Applause] vein. We need some burning in here. We need some sparks shooting out. And the reason everybody's dry on your road is 'cause you a dry hide. If if somebody gets the sparking, then the other sparks will spread. If if I can get one on every row to catch on fire, I got a I got a fresh new touch of fire. I don't know about you. I feel this thing. I'm tired of fear ruling. I'm tired of disease ruling. I'm tired of worry ruling. I'm tired of sin ruling. I want a fire, a Refiner's Fire and Fuller's soap. The soap cleans you on the outside. Malachi said, "He'll sit as a Refiner's Fire and Fuller's soap." The fire cleans you up on the outside, or the soap cleans you up on the outside. The fire burns you up on the inside. 1666, London was dying of bubonic plague. Was killing thousands and tens of thousands of people, dying families, whole families sick and dying. And in the largest barn in London, England, an old cow was prodded by an angel, I believe, and he kicked over the lantern and one straw. You know, they say fire can double itself. Think about this, every 30 seconds. So that means if it's one straw, but if it's a thousand or 10 million, it can double itself every 30 seconds if it's got the fuel. Wonder why we're not seeing more people get saved? Somebody's got to get on fire enough to touch somebody around you, and that fire burned completely through the city of London. And it looked like a a catastrophe. It looked like a disaster. Some of the things that you think are disasters is God working all things together for your good. And listen to this: the fire became so intense in London, every building, every home on fire, that the fire began to drip and to seek down into the sewer, and it caught one rat on fire and its fleas. And that's how the disease, they didn't know it, but that's how the bubonic plague was being spread through the rats and their fleas. But when that one rat caught on fire in the sewer, he took off running, and every one of his buddies called on three or four of them. And remember, it can double itself. It kept doubling, and the whole underground sewer of the beautiful city of London was on fire, and it was killing the plague because when the fire was over, the plague ceased. Wouldn't you like to see a fire get down in the sewer of your soul that every rat and every flea of sin would absolutely be purged and killed, and you would say, "Lord, here I am. Here I am. Use me. Send me. Set me on fire. I want an out-of-control fire." I don't believe it'll start until we do what Elijah did, and we build an altar, and we pray, and we get on fire, and chronic sin begins to be purged out of the sewer of our soul. It keeps coming up, but the fire can get down there and cleanse your soul. Everybody say, "Turn up the fire."

I didn't know this, but then I understood because this actually happened in the Los Angeles fires. But fire can create its own weather. It's the one thing firefighters fear is called a firestorm. When the fire gets so heated, so intense, it literally can create wind currents. It literally can create lightning, even fire tornadoes. But what really got my attention that I couldn't get my brain around is fire can become so intense it creates rain. You look that up. It's the truth. No wonder Elijah, when the fire fell, the next thing he said was, "We got to get off this mountain." And he outran the horses of Ahab because he said, "I hear the sound of an abundance of rain." Because if the fire, fire ever falls, the next thing that comes is, I mean, intense. I'm not talking about a little bless man. I'm going to come down here and I know you're going to have an altar call. I'm going to come and say, "Give me the fire, Lord." No, forget it. Stay where you are. You're actually a damper. It don't take a lot. It took 120 in the upper room. Every one of them caught on fire. Had a flame of fire over their head. They turned the world upside down. Sparks went out everywhere they went. Set whole cities on fire for God. Who wants to, who wants that? Have we become so carnal and so God-in-a-box people that we don't believe He can do it again? These things were written for our learning. And Jesus said, John the Baptist said, "I indeed baptize you in water, but there's one coming after me named Jesus. He shall baptize you in the Holy Ghost and fire." You're being robbed if you don't have that fire.

Stand to your feet all over this room, at every campus. I want everybody who's a candidate who would say, "I want the fire. I want it. I want it in this church. I want it in my home. I want it in my family. I want it in my my. I want my mind, my upper room, filled with the fire. Let it purge out all the rats and the fleas of of the plague of sin." Amen. We need that. We need such a revival that our young people learn how to pray again, learn how to travail, learn how to stand there and call on God. I I I want our youth pastors to know God like that. I want our campus pastors. I I want to see the fire back in our hearts. I didn't start out to lose the fire. Now stir it up. Stirred up deacons, stirred up leaders. I'm preaching, every leader in this church, stir it up. There's a generation that needs the sparks of your fire. So who am I preaching to? Who would say, "I want more than dead, dry religion. I want the fire of the Holy Ghost." If that's you, get out of your seat and come stand down here. I don't care who you are. There's some things that you need supernatural power to help you with. And the Bible said, "It's not by might, nor by power, it's by My Spirit." We got to get back to praying in the Holy Ghost, praying in the Spirit. So lift those hands up. Say, "God, here's my hands. Here's my heart. Give me a holy heart." Burn like those men on the road to Damascus. They said, "Did not our hearts burn within us as He spoke?" Oh, come on. Is there others?
