The final town that we'll explore today is a town that ticks all the boxes: incredible beauty, affordability, and a welcoming community. Now, let's get started. First up on our list is Zaragoza, or Zaragoza. Zaragoza is located between Madrid and Barcelona, and this city is often overlooked, but it's full of charm and historical beauty. One of the key highlights here is the Basilica del Pilar, an iconic landmark along the Ebro River. It's a must-see for anyone visiting or living in the area. The city is affordable, offering a fantastic mix of old-world charm and modern living with a relaxed pace of life.
When it comes to renting in Zaragoza, the average cost of a one-bedroom apartment will run you approximately 600 to 700 per month. While outside the city center, you can find options for approximately 500 to 600 per month. Now, if you're looking to buy real estate, prices are incredibly affordable when compared to Madrid, Barcelona, even Canada and the United States. In major cities, you can find incredible apartments starting at approximately 60 to 70,000. That's a tremendous savings when you think of the cost of an apartment or a condo in the US.
Now, let's take a quick look at some of the rentals in the Zaragoza area. These are the costs. As you can see, um, there are rentals that are starting at 500, 574. Is there anything that we can see in the $400 range? I don't think so. This is pretty much what you're going to get starting out at about $500, and there's one for 645. Very nice. But this is just to give you an idea of what's available and what you're going to pay per month living in Zaragoza.
Now, let's take a look at some of the real estate prices. This is in the central area of Zaragoza. You can see there are some options starting at 40,000, 355,000, 63,000, all the way up to we capped it off at about 150,000. So if you can, we click on a $63,000 apartment, and it looks like a nice building. You got it's fairly spacious, and this is a two-bedroom apartment for $63,000. If you want to go up to a more of a costly, let's see what this looks like. The the 120,000 apartment, it's charming, looks like a nice neighborhood, very pretty, spacious rooms, some nice charm with a deck. This is just to give you an idea of what it's going to cost to purchase real estate in Zaragoza.
When you're ready to eat, you can find a meal at a local tapas restaurant at approximately 10 to 15 per person. Getting around Zaragoza is simple with an efficient tram system, frequent buses, and affordable taxis. The city center is very walkable, making it easy to explore on foot. Ride-hailing services like Uber and Cabify are available, providing convenient and affordable options. Overall, Zaragoza is an affordable option for those looking to live in a historic yet lively city without breaking the bank.
Next up is Salamanca. Salamanca is known as the Golden City because of its stunning sandstone buildings that glow under the Spanish sun. This city is famous for its ancient university, the University of Salamanca. It's one of the oldest in Europe, giving it a youthful yet timeless feel. Salamanca offers a peaceful and affordable lifestyle while being rich in history and culture. It's also much less crowded than Spain's major tourist hubs.
In terms of rent in Salamanca, you can expect to pay approximately 500 to 700 per month in the city center, and outside the city center, you can find apartments ranging at approximately 400 to 600 per month. Buying a home here is also very affordable. You can find an apartment starting at approximately €70,000 and up.
Let's take a look at what the rental prices are going currently in Salamanca. Rentals do start at approximately, I'm seeing some at 4450, 490. This is in the city center of Salamanca, and it can go all the way up to, we capped it off at about $700. And give you an idea what an apartment looks like at 526 per month. This is a studio, looks nice and clean. Let's take a look at something that's a little bit more costlier. This is a one-bedroom, about 550 square feet, nice, and that runs at €650 per month.
Now, let's take a look at what the real estate costs are going for. When we look at the real estate cost in the city center, you're looking at approximately starting at about 70, 75,000. If you go a little bit further out, obviously they can drop. Boots on the ground, you could also find better deals. Let's take a look at what these look like. Okay, so here's an apartment for €75,000. That's a very small apartment, said 28, so that's about 300 square feet of living space. Okay. And then you can go, we capped it off at about 140,000. So this is one for, it's a one-bedroom, about 700 square feet at 130 approximately €130,000. And this is just to give you an understanding of what's available in Salamanca.
When it comes to dining out, you'll find plenty of delicious and affordable options. A meal at a local tapas bar can run you approximately 10 to 15, and you'll also find plenty of cafes where you can grab a coffee and a dessert for just a couple of Euros. Getting around Salamanca is easy as well. It's a very walkable city, but they do offer public transportation, which is excellent, and you can find transportation passes at approximately $25 to $30 per month. Salamanca's historic charm, beauty, and affordability makes it perfect for retirees looking for a relaxed and affordable lifestyle.
The next hidden gem on our list is A Coruña. A Coruña is a stunning coastal city in Galicia and Northern Spain. This city is a true hidden gem for retirees looking for a combination of relaxation and natural beauty. The Tower of Hercules, a Roman lighthouse and UNESCO World Heritage site, offers spectacular views of the rugged coastline. A Coruña also boasts beautiful beaches, an amazing food scene, and a mild temperate climate, perfect for those looking to escape the heat of Spain's southern coast.
Renting in A Coruña is affordable. A one-bedroom apartment in the city center will run you approximately 480 to 700 per month, and outside the city center, you'll find prices drop to approximately €400 to €600 per month. Real estate prices are similarly affordable, with apartments starting in the €70,000 Euro range, and they can go on up from there.
Looking at what's available for rentals currently in A Coruña, you can see that there are a variety of options, any ranging from €480 on up. There are some really amazing options right by the water. Let's check this one out. This is €600 per month, and it is a really spacious, beautiful apartment right near the water. Here's another one for 650. Okay, so there are plenty of wonderful options in A Coruña for rent, anywhere from the 480 to the 700 range.
Let's take a look at the real estate options. I can see that there are some starting at approximately €50,000 on up. We capped it off at about €140,000, and it looks like these options are all within walking distance to to the water, which is wonderful. Here's a, what is it? Okay, so we have a, a three-bedroom. This is about 900 square feet, and just to give you an idea, one an apartment looks for in A Coruña, a three-bedroom apartment, this one is €136,000, and you can walk to the to the beach. As you can see, that there are some incredibly affordable options in this seaside town.
The cost of living is incredibly affordable here. You can enjoy a fresh meal, a typical local seafood meal for 10 to 15 per person. Finding a seafood dish at this cost makes it one of the most affordable coastal towns in Spain. Getting around A Coruña is easy thanks to its compact, walkable layout and efficient public transportation. The city has a public bus system, plenty of taxis, and rideshare options as well. With scenic coastal promenades and pedestrian-friendly streets, walking is one of the best options for getting around and exploring this beautiful city.
Next, we head inland to Santiago de Compostela, a city with both historic significance and a warm, welcoming community. Santiago de Compostela is located in the lush green region of Galicia. It is one of Spain's most enchanting cities, famous for being the final destination of the Camino de Santiago pilgrimage. The city is a beautiful blend of medieval streets, incredible architecture, and peaceful living. The Santiago Cathedral is an absolute marvel, and the city's historic Old Town will make you feel like you're stepping back in time.
Rentals in Santiago de Compostela are affordable. You can expect to pay around 400 to 700 per month in the city center. If you step outside the city center, the price will drop to approximately 350 to €600 per month. Now, if you're interested in purchasing real estate, you can find fixer-uppers starting at around €70,000, and move-in ready apartment options can start at approximately €100,000 on up, which is really incredible when thinking about living in such a magnificent city.
So, let's see what's on the market currently for rentals. We can see they are ranging anywhere from 400 on up to 700, and this is right along the the city center area. If we click on, take a look at this one, is for 640 per month, and it is a one-bedroom, approximately 350 square feet, clean, nice, very convenient in the center of it all.
Let's take a look at what real estate costs go for here. Real estate options are showing that they start at approximately 7,000. That's a going to be a fixer-upper. This is a actually really nice. It's a four-bedroom, it's over 1,000 square feet, and a little outdoor patio, very clean, very spacious for 135,000. So that just gives you an idea what's available currently on the market.
A typical meal at a local tapas restaurant is going to run you about 10 to 15 per meal. Overall, the cost of living in Santiago is very affordable, especially when compared to cities like Madrid and Barcelona. It's also a very walkable city, making it perfect for those retirees who don't want to worry about heavy transportation costs.
And finally, the number one hidden gem in Spain is Ronda. Ronda is one of the most breathtaking towns in all of Spain, perched high above the dramatic gorge. The iconic Puente Nuevo Bridge offers stunning views that will take your breath away. This picturesque town has a combination of historical charm and natural beauty, with a slower pace of life and a welcoming community.
In terms of affordability, Ronda remains surprisingly budget-friendly. You can find a one-bedroom in the city center ranging from approximately 450 to 650 per month. In outside the city center, prices can drop from 400 to 600 per month. Real estate prices are equally affordable, starting at 70,000 for fixer-uppers, and move-in ready apartments will start at approximately €90,000 on up from there.
Here are some rental options currently on the market in Ronda. We're seeing them range from €375 per month on up to approximately, it looks like €650 per month. Let's check out one of these rentals and see what you get. This is a three-bed, very large, about 800 square foot apartment for €650 per month. This one is €450 per month. This is a one-bedroom at about 600 square feet, clean, spacious, very nice option for €450 per month.
And here's what's currently on the market for real estate options. As you can see, there's one for $69,500, another for 90,000. Let's take a look at that. You got a 40 m squared, that's about 4 to 500 square feet, and clean, nice, spacious in the beautiful city of Ronda for 90. €90,000 is a is a bargain. This is a four-bedroom, and this is about a 13,400 square foot apartment, which is very spacious, very nice. So if you want to spend 115,000 for a four-bedroom, approximately 1400, 1500 square foot apartment, it's going to run you about 150,000 in Ronda.
A meal at a local restaurant will cost approximately 10 to 15. Getting around Ronda is simple. The town is compact and highly walkable, especially in the historic center. While there is a local bus system, most attractions, including the famous Old Town, are best explored on foot. Taxis are available as well. So, with its unmatched beauty and low cost of living, Ronda offers the perfect balance of stunning scenery and affordable living.
So, as you've seen, Spain offers some truly amazing and affordable places to retire, each with its own charm, rich history, and welcoming atmosphere.
