The SECRET to better Transitions in LumaFusion 2022 | Beginner to Pro

[Music] In today's tutorial, we're gonna make two quick whip transitions in LumaFusion. One which is a basic one, so extremely beginner-friendly, so anyone can make this. And the other one is a little bit more advanced, but I'm also going to teach you exactly how I make easy keyframes in LumaFusion. And this is the same method I've been using for a couple of years now, since we don't have any ease-in/ease-out system in LumaFusion yet. This is the way to go if you want to smoothen out your animation.

Now, also put together all the advanced quick whip transitions in a small bundle. This contains the quick whip in all directions. Now with that said, let's head over to the iPad and let's make some quick whip transitions. So moving over to the iPad and over to LumaFusion, we're to start with the basic whip transition first. This is extremely easy and only requires a few cuts and four keyframes. The first thing we need to do to pull this off is to change the scale of our clips. This is to make it so much easier so you don't have to use duplicate clips and create that mirror effect.

The first thing we're going to do is to go into one of the clips here and over to Frame and Fit and go over to Size. Here we're going to change the size to 120. You can also change this to 110, 130, 50, 200, depending on how you want this to be. So the bigger the size is, the more freedom you will have to move around the image. Now the reason why we do this is because we don't want to add duplicates and we want this to be applied to a single layer. Now the higher the resolution of your clip is, the better this will look. So I suggest doing this with 4K clips, but these clips are 1080p, so you can see for yourself at the end how these look in terms of quality loss as we're zooming this into 120.

So now that we change the scale to 120, we can go back out to the timeline, select the clip which has the change of size, and then copy the size change from the clipboard, which is the first icon, and then multi-select the remaining clips and choose the clipboard and make sure that you only have the left icon selected. Just in case you have color correction, color grading, and other effects applied to the first clip, you don't want to copy those over to the remaining clips because you might have to remove them anyway later on. So make sure that you only have the first icon enabled once you copy and paste the size change.

So now that we have the change of size to all the different clips here, we're gonna move our playhead in between the two clips as shown here on the iPad. Now we only gonna do three frames for this first transition, so we're gonna use the previous screen here and just swipe to the left or right depending on which direction we wanna go first. Now we're gonna move our playhead to the center between the two clips and go the other way. Here we're also gonna make a cut, and we now have two clips which is three frames each.

The next step is to go into the first one and then take our playhead to the beginning of the clip. Here we're gonna make a keyframe. We're not gonna do any changes to this keyframe, so once we created the keyframe, we're gonna move to the end of the clip. Here we're also gonna make a new keyframe, and we're gonna adjust the position of the clip. And for this, we're gonna do the top right corner. And if we take a look at the position x and position y here, we want these to have the equal number, so we're going to change both of these numbers to minus 19.5 on the position x and plus 19.5 on position y. This will keep the video going in a straight line from the first keyframe to the last keyframe. And now we're gonna do the same thing to the second clip, so we're gonna go into Frame and Fit and make a keyframe at the beginning. On the beginning keyframe, we're gonna change the placement of the clip because here is where the movement is going on, and then it will stop on the last keyframe going back to its normal position. So on the first keyframe, we're going to change the position x and position y to plus and minus 19.5, but here you can also see that we need to do this the opposite way, so the top one is now the plus side and the bottom one is the negative side, so minus on the position y and plus on the position x.

Now going back out to the timeline, our transition is now complete. We now created a super simple and easy transition in LumaFusion, but there's also something which is missing, so we need to add some motion blur just to make the rocket a little bit more seamless. So we're going to go into the first clip and then over to the water droplet and add a Motion 20. At the beginning, we're going to create a keyframe, and we can use the handle in the previous screen to align the direction of the motion blur. Here at the beginning, we're also gonna have the radius on zero, and we can also use the handle inside the previous screen to adjust that. Now moving over to the end of the clip, we're gonna adjust the radius a tiny bit to our desired blur. Now we're gonna repeat this process at the last clip, but here we're gonna start by having the motion blur applied, then we're gonna move to the end, and we're gonna change the radius to zero. So our transition is now complete, and we have a fast quick whip transition in LumaFusion with motion blur applied.

Now this is the easy, straightforward, and a beginner-friendly way of creating a quick whip transition in LumaFusion. If we're going to take it a step up and create a more advanced seamless quick whip transition, we need to move over to a few different clips here. So what we're gonna do here now is to add five frames instead of three. We're gonna do the same process by skipping on the previous screen to move five frames and then make a cut. So now we have two clips which has five frames each. We're gonna start with the first one, so we're gonna go over to Frame and Fit, and inside of Frame and Fit, we're gonna pay attention to the position x and y throughout the entire process of creating keyframes because these are gonna be equal on every single keyframe that we make. Now we only have to make five keyframes because this clip here, this part of the clip is five frames, which is five keyframes. So the process is a little bit more time-consuming, but the more you practice, the faster you will end up making these transitions in the future. Now you can also, if I didn't mention it already, create this in any direction you want, so it doesn't have to be to the top right. You can do top left, bottom left, bottom right, or to the right, left, top, or bottom. So it's the same process for all of the different directions.

The first thing we're going to start with is to take our playhead to the beginning, and here we're going to start with the movement right away. We're also going to do the same direction so you can see the difference between the two transitions at the end. Now for the transition, we can also use the number pad within LumaFusion to make it a lot easier for ourselves to put in the correct numbers. So that's what we're gonna do for this part of the transition, and we're gonna move over to the number pad by tapping on the pencil to the right of the number. And on the first one, since we can see that this top section now the position x is minus and the position y is plus, that means all the numbers that we change on the position x has to be on the minus side, and all the numbers that we change on the position y has to be on the plus side. So for the first keyframe, we're going to change the number to something like minus 0.5, so that means for the position y we're gonna change this to 0.5. So there we have our first keyframe. Now we can go one frame forward in time and create our new keyframe. So here we're going to change the position x to minus 1.3. Now since this is already on the negative side, we want to reset this first before we add the next number, so we do that by tapping on the 0.0 which is on top here. And if you don't have 0.0, then you can simply just tap hold on any of those squares. Once you have the position x set to 0.0, that will add that 0.0 to that square box under the number pad. So by tapping on zero first, that will reset everything, and now we can tap on the minus and then choose 1.3. Now for the plus side, we don't have to do this, so we can tap on 1.3 and then enter. Now moving one keyframe forward in time, here we're going to change this to minus and plus 2.5. [Music] For the next keyframe, we're going to change this to a minus 9.5 and a 9.5. And for the last keyframe, we're going to change the position x and position y to minus 19.5 and plus 19.5.

Now let's move back to the beginning of creating these keyframes again. If we take a look at the beginning here, we can see the small changes of 0.5 to 1.3 and then up to 2.5 and then up to 9.5. So at the beginning here, we have such small changes that you might not even notice when you play back the video. And this is because we want to create the keyframes in a way of a curve. And if you take a look at this curve right here, you can see that at the bottom of the curve there is small changes, there the curve is quite even, and then it gets close to the curvature you can see the bigger change of the line here. So the line curves upwards, and that's what we want to illustrate with the keyframes that we make as well. But this is the way that you create super seamless transitions and effects and the animation inside of LumaFusion right now because we don't have that easy keyframe system, which hopefully is coming soon. So if we go back to the first one here, so I can run through the process here, we have the first keyframe starting at 0.5, and that's because the clip before this keyframe is already at 0.0, so we don't have to start with 0.0 because the clip in front of this already has the position of 0.0, right. So for the next one, which is 1.3, we increase it a tiny bit with a change of plus 0.8, so 0.8 0.5 is 1.3. And for the next one, which is 2.5, we increase the amount with 1.2, so 1.2 1.3 is 2.5. And that means we now have the change of 0.8 and then we have the change of 1.2. And for the next one, we want to take it a little bit higher because it's getting close to the duration of the clip, so here we go all the way up to 9.5. And for the last keyframe, we just take it to the maximum amount of change that we can do before the image gets out of the previous screen and we get those black bars on the sides and on the top. So that's basically a rundown of how I create the easy keyframes in LumaFusion to create the transitions that I create.

Now that you understand, let's move over, or hopefully you understand, but let's move over to the last part of the transition here. So we're gonna do the exact same thing. We're going to go into the last clip here, but here we're going to do it the opposite way like we did with the first transition. So here we're going to start with a keyframe, and we're going to start with the changes of minus and plus 19.5, and we're going to drag it down to the bottom left corner, so it goes the opposite of the first one creating that seamless transition going in the same way. Now moving over to the next keyframe here, and if we remember the first part of the transition that was minus and plus 9.5, so for this we can change it to the exact same thing. But if you take a look at the position y and position x now, we have to do it the opposite way. So instead of the position x being on the minus side, we're gonna have the position y being minus 9.5 and then position x being plus 9.5. So we're going to change this to be the opposite of what we had in the first transition.

Now moving over to the remaining keyframes here and changing the different numbers, we can change them to something different; they don't have to be the exact same as the first one. And for the last one here, we're going to go with 0.8. The reason why we don't have to have this at 0.0 is because the clip coming after this transition already has that keyframe which is 0.0. That leaves us with the option to have the last keyframe here on 0.8 or 0.5, whatever number that you want to have on this last keyframe. So now that we have our transition complete, let's go back out to the timeline here and do a preview. Let's take a look at both of the transitions here, and we have the first one coming in which is a really beginner-friendly and fast way of creating a very quick whip transition, and we also have the other one which is a more seamless way of creating a whip transition in LumaFusion. Now we want to add some motion blur to this as well, so we're gonna do the same thing as we did with the first transition we created. And after applying the motion blur, both of our transitions are now complete. [Music]

So there you have the way that I create my ease-in/ease-out system in LumaFusion. Pretty straightforward once you get the hang of it, and once you start to practice and learning the different numbers of each keyframe, you can really create anything that you want.
