The internet is already permeating everything, even on the International Space Station. A phone call from one module to the next goes via the internet.
But how do we keep it running? How do we guard it? Even if a very poor person today has more access to information than kings and emperors did in the past, what Hurricane Sandy cost here could happen on a worldwide scale, and much worse. No electricity, no internet, no drinking water, no flushing of toilets, no gas, and no shopping. If you disrupt those networks, I imagine, uh, what do they say, civilization is always about four square meals away from utter ruin.
Will we disappear as a species again? Verner, I can't tell you because, uh, I don't make predictions. It will be unimaginably bad, and I'd prefer to not think about it right now.
