US President Donald Trump announced on Saturday that he had withdrawn the nomination of Eric Seabird to serve as a US attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia after learning Seabird has received what Trump described as unusually strong support from two Democratic senators.
Seabird, who has been overseeing a fraud investigation into New York Attorney General Letia James, resigned a day earlier following Trump's public call for his removal, Reuters reported citing an internal email and source familiar with the matter on his truth social platform.
However, Trump insisted Seabird did not quit but was fired.
Seabird, who has not yet been confirmed by the Senate, has reportedly expressed doubts about the merits of the case against James and has so far declined to bring charges.
