What's Taoism?

Philosophy Animal1:17

Transcription

Taoism originated in China by a man called Lao Tsu, and the book that contains its doctrines is called Tao Te Ching.

It emphasizes non-action, action, or effortless action. Not to be confused with laziness or lack of action, but effortless action. The word that describes Taoism is flow. A good example would be a flow that artists and athletes experience when they are in the zone. It focuses on spontaneity, flowing like a river.

The literal meaning is the way, or course of nature. Not resisting nature but going in the same direction as nature, or becoming as one with nature. We come from nature, and when we die, we return to nature. So it is a religion of flow.

It describes the flow when artists and athletes get in the zone, where effort or strain no longer feels like pushing. You become almost one with what you do. You and your artistic expression, in the case of artists. You and your body, in the case of athletes.

I can tell you that sometimes I experience this flow. When I write, mostly it is toiling and hard work, but occasionally things just flow. Words, characters, plot, settings, and ideas just come out. It is the most wonderful feeling.
