[Music] The eighth house is the house of merging, sex, deep intimacy, shared finances, inheritances, and legacies. Taxes, loans, assets, joint ventures in property, mystery, the occult, police, and the partners' resources are also part of its domain. The natural sign that rules this house is Scorpio. The natural planetary ruler is Pluto. It is a yin house. Its element is water. Its modality is fixed, and the perspective is social.
The eighth house is our personal hell in the natal chart. It contains what we fear, what we suppress, and what we hide from ourselves. Pain and the false power we gain from it are also in this house. The parts of our psyche that are in pain are symbolized by planets in the eighth house and show our attitude toward death and regeneration, and also what we must allow to die and regenerate within us. Wounds are the anchor that hold us back from future growth that we see the possibility of in the following ninth house.
This is the house of deep attachments, but also points to what we need to let go of, how we can transform out of those attachments. All deeply intimate relationships are the property of the eighth house, not just sexual relationships. Relationships with a therapist, a counselor, with those who work in crisis intervention, taxes, and with death – all of these types of relationships are found in the eighth house.
How we respond to and push through crisis and fear is of the eighth house. Reconciling ourselves with what is repressed and wounded, healing through acknowledging what needs to be brought to light, our attitude about how we make changes, our approach to transformation is also shown by planets in the eighth house. The placement of the ruler of the eighth house shows what personal area of life will be the main outlet for the action of the eighth.
What is taboo, forbidden, or prohibited is also described by the eighth house. What we hide but are secretly attracted to, addicted to, or obsessed with. Our experiences related to intensity, jealousy, greed, revenge, and hatred are also eighth house contents. Resentment is the crowning experience represented by this house, as resentment is anger that has been nurtured, cultivated, and fermented.
We find what we get after partnership or marriage in the eighth house. It is the natural progression of how merging with another in the seventh house goes, the deepening of the marriage relationship of the seventh house. It is the story of how we deal with intimacy and the threat of another possibly taking us over. The seventh house relationships we attract require merging in the eighth house of one's assets, be they financial, sexual, emotional, or material.
Pluto, the planet itself, in one's birth chart, unless it is the eighth house ruler, does not describe our personal hell because planets are archetypal actors, not realms of personal experience as houses are. Projective identification of our wounds onto our intimate partners happens when we have eighth house hurts yet to be healed. We see in our sexual partners the psychological problems we harbor in ourselves. Trust issues, jealousy, money issues, paranoia – all of these complexes can be cast upon our sexual partners.
We find a big piece of the shadow self in the eighth house. Scary, threatening traits we cast upon those we are intimate with provide the clues to what we fear and loathe in our own selves. We can gain real power when and if we let go of our eighth house pain. We can become powerfully constructive by transforming our tendencies towards self-destruction.
Marinating in our pain and nurturing our wounds is our human way of protecting the false power that comes from using those wounds as currency, throwing our pain around to get others to do our bidding, limiting our lives in accordance to what our pain will allow. Our eighth house experiences, letting go of these manipulative behaviors meant to control others and our environments, is also an eighth house experience. Letting go of this type of currency takes insight into one's pain and the willingness to let it go so we can achieve freedom from requiring the resources of others to support us and make us feel secure. The disease to feed on other people's power and resources is no longer attractive to us when we are transforming out of our eighth house pain.
